Always looking to improve and add depth to its offensive and defensive lines, the Kansas University football team picked up a huge victory in the recruiting game late Monday night, when Andrew Bolton, a 6-foot-3, 280-pound defensive end from Hinds Community College in Raymond, Miss., orally committed to join the Jayhawks.
During his first season at Hinds CC, Bolton recorded 65 tackles, including 18 for loss and nine sacks. That monster performance attracted attention from some of college football’s biggest names, as Alabama, LSU and Ohio State were among the several schools showing serious interest in Bolton.
In an interview with JayhawkSlant.com, Bolton said the fact that KU coach Charlie Weis and the Jayhawks offered the total package played a big role in his decision.
“They talked about football but I liked how they were serious about school work,” Bolton told Jon Kirby. “I liked meeting all of the coaches and getting to know them. I liked being around the players. They took good care of us.”
Linebackers coach DeMontie Cross was the lead recruiter for Bolton, who made his official visit to campus last weekend for the TCU game and became the eighth member in the Class of 2013 to pledge his services to the Jayhawks.
In other recruiting news, KU commitment Colin Spencer, a 5-10, 179-pound defensive back, recently began playing quarterback for his high school team in Dallas.

Very nice, I was actually on a plane from Dallas to KC with all three of these guys last Friday.
I didn't talk to them much, as I only met them when Southwest lost all or our checked luggage, but when they said they needed to get their luggage the Oread Hotel I put two and two together. I'm glad their luggage mishap didn't ruin their whole weekend.

My seats are right behind the KU bench. I saw those dudes come in together. I don't know how good they are, but they are some big boys!

Me too. Talked to them at length. All seemed like good kids, interested in WHOLE package, not just football program. All said our facilities were the best they had seen.

Sweet. Good news. This latest experience for Spencer will also help him in the future for us. I loved the highlights of that guy. He is a very, very fast closer. A real nose for the ball. Read somewhere that he was a real standout at one of the major camps.

Yeah that was on ESPN.com. And I'm 85 percent sure it was at the Nike camp that Spencer set an agility and 40 record. Video interview:http://espn.go.com/college-sports/football/recruiting/player/videos/_/id/138398/colin-spencer

Thanks. Looking forward to seeing him on the field. Maybe he can play both ways.

Any idea if KU will be able to bring Bolton on in January? With Jon Shelby having left, can his scholarship be given to Bolton and still keep KU at no more than 25 "new starts" for AY2012-13? It would be great to have him and Ty McKinney starting early with Holsopple in preparation for next fall.

To get a guy out of Mississippi is pretty impressive. Let's hope that this has a positive influence on other potential recruits. Who knew that the Charlie Weis regime would be defined by Defense?

Highly effective people managing others recognize what they are not good at, and find people whose strengths are their weakness. Charlie said that he learned from his mistakes at ND. Hiring Campo is proof of that
ralster 8 months ago
Chris1955, PERFECTLY said. People thinking Weis@KU would just be a NDame rehash simply forgot to consider that when Weis went to NDame, the Irish did not need a total rebuild. Thus he didnt have to do as much as is required at KU this year with the total ground-up rebuild-->thus Weis' impact at NDame was less than what it already has been and will show to be at KU. Plus he clearly was embarrased by his defense at NDame, and Gill's D here at KU was even worse. So Weis went out & got Campo. People also do not seem to know that Campo personally is well-known to be a hands-on, teaching-type of coach. I've seen clueless posters on this site assume that since Campo a 20yr NFL coach, that he cant teach college kids. Wrong. I dont get some ku "fans": instead of breathing fresh air knowing Gill is gone, and slowly watching the rebuilding take place, they'd rather whine like impatient toddlers, which they do too often.

He sounds like the real deal. Stealing one away from Alabama and LSU?

A few more like this guy for this upcoming recruiting class with the QB we know we will have starting next season and with McKay(if his attitude is in the right place) and Turzelli and probably Shepherd being threats any where on the field next season, the pieces might be coming together.

Maybe Charlie will get this mess of Gill's cleaned up.
ralster 8 months ago
Yes, Mr.Purple...maybe Charlie knows something about football, unlike the previous KU coach? (See sun sparkle off 4 super bowl rings...). At least thanks are in order for you pointing out to the ku "fans" that this was indeed Gill's mess. Charlie+Campo+Grunhard are here to help us. This will take time. But already the kids look better. It has begun...

Keep getting them D-linemen !!! Hopefully some talented young bucks in this next class so we can develop them for the future.
KGphoto 8 months ago
Who were the other two guys?
ralster 8 months ago
This is really good! The program and staff almost sells itself: Play for Weis (known name). Play for Campo (NFL cred). Rotate 8+ D-linemen, thus many mpg to spread around. Rotate 8+ D-linemen also means you are fresher when you come in, thus more likely to make that "big" play. Also, you are learning from coaches who know what it takes at the next level, and if you play to your potential, they may even have contacts to assist you get to the next level (sometimes it is "who ya know"). And academics are important also, and Weis holds everyone accountable. If you suffer in the classroom, you wont see the field. Oh, did we mention the facilities? Ooops, I see you've already seen them as you are speechless...and looking for a pen...
