Kansas coach Charlie Weis talks to reporters following the Jayhawks' 56-16 loss to Kansas State on Oct. 6, 2012.
Manhattan Even a 40-point victory over his team’s biggest rival wasn’t enough to make Kansas State receiver Chris Harper happy.
Following KSU’s 56-16 rout of Kansas University on Saturday, Harper said he regretted that the Wildcats hadn’t put on an even better showing against their cross-state foes.
“We just don’t want to beat them. We want to beat them bad,” the Wichita native said. “I still wasn’t happy with how much we beat them by. I wish we’d have beat them by more.”
Perfect or not, KSU still was able to clearly illustrate it was the best team in the Sunflower State.
The seventh-ranked Wildcats forced a season-high five turnovers, outscoring the Jayhawks, 35-2, in the second half to take control.
“I don’t want it to be close. I want to show that we’re a better team,” Harper said. “We played OK, but we made a lot of mistakes. We could have played a lot better.”
KSU coach Bill Snyder admitted to having mixed feelings afterward, saying he was just as happy with his team’s second half as he was frustrated with his squad’s first half. KSU led just 21-14 at the break.
Still, the coach scoffed when asked if he was pleased to dominate KU for another year.
“I don’t think we dominated anybody,” Snyder said. “I think we had a lot more points, but we certainly didn’t dominate the ballgame. The first half was evidence of that.
“They’ve got — I don’t know what it says on here — 400-some-odd yards of total offense. That’s not domination.”
KU actually finished with 388 total yards, which was the second-most allowed by the Wildcats this season.
The Jayhawks were especially efficient in the first half, gaining 263 yards on 49 plays with a pair of touchdown drives.
“Kansas always throws a little wrinkle in things,” KSU linebacker Justin Tuggle said. “You look back at the last couple games, how they start the game ... they put Kale Pick at quarterback to start this game off, so that was a little bit different. But you never know what you’re going to expect. You’ve just got to be ready and play your assignments well.”
KSU’s defense looked much more comfortable against KU in the second half, especially with running back Tony Pierson sitting out because of an undisclosed injury.
“Kansas came out ... they had a great scheme,” KSU linebacker Arthur Brown said. “They’ve got some great players as well. Really, what we did to adjust to their approach, it really helped us be successful in the second half.”
KSU safety Ty Zimmerman — a Junction City native — said the win was significant because of the high percentage of Kansans on the Wildcats’ roster.
“(The Jayhawks) have the new coach and a lot of different things this year. I know they’ll win some games,” ZImmerman said. “But (the win) is big for us, and we’re going to enjoy it.”
The victory also improved the Wildcats to 5-0 and helped keep their Big 12 and national-title hopes alive.
“You know everybody’s trying to end your season. That’s KU,” Harper said. “If they’d have won this game, that would have made their season. Who cares about a bowl game or anything for them? If they’d have won this game, they would have partied like they won the national championship or something.
“Every game we’ve got to come out ready, because the other teams are circling our game now on the calendar.”

It's a little different for a fan to make a comment on a message board in reaction to the other team's gloating fan than for a player to make a statement like that unprovoked. Everyone else interviewed showed a lot of class, Harper was an outcast in that department.

Hey kal — You asked about the question Harper received, so I'll provide that. It was asked by Bruce Haertl of KWCH: "How important was this game, just to keep Kansas kind of under thumb. I mean, that's of a goal, isn't it ... to win a game, but to let them know the difference between the two programs?"
Harper: "Yeah. Definitely. We just don't want to beat them ... "
Jesse Newell 8 months, 1 week ago
I was surprised he said it, but I will never fault any athlete for being honest and giving a truthful answer rather than cliches, which is what we hear quite a bit. It still was the most noteworthy thing I heard, which is why I started the story with it.
It's interesting, because just a few seconds earlier, he had actually just told a reporter that he wasn't one of the guys that hated Kansas, but he answered Haertl's question in a different way. Sometimes that happens when a question comes from a more familiar face.
And to answer your question below this ... the first two quotes in the story above were actually one continuous quote without a break. There was no combining to make a complete thought.
phogphan2000 8 months, 1 week ago
I'd agree with you if it was a one-liner, but those are entire paragraphs worth of comments and I don't really see what question could goad you into statements like those unless you just really wanted to talk sh!t. Don't get me wrong, some of the folks on here that have shown jealousy towards KSU's successes just make KU look bad in general.

Harper is a comedian, a clown. The guy has been around manure far too long at KSU; the smelly, brown stuff is effecting his judgement. The other KSU players quoted or mentioned here seem to be competitive, gracious guys. Grandpa Bill continues his grumpy ways - so no surprise there: he is mad that they just raised his rent at his assisted living apartment in cow town.

So how do you feel knowing that our team got obliterated by a manure scented team from a Cowtown? Some of our fans are just plain stupid.

KSU is good but they are not a top 10 nationally ranked team. They are 5-0 and have beaten a very over rated OU and a weak Miami team. I hope they enjoy this season. It will be very different next year.

Agree about Harper, it is one thing for fans because that is what they do but not players (at least collge) and not so over the top. I would bet some coin that Snyder, who I have a TON of respect for, was not happy at all about the comments. The comments just come off as bitter and cheap.

championhawks 8 months, 1 week ago
Kal... The problem I have with his comment is that they did win big. If the game was close, then I wouldn't have a problem with the comment. When his team won by 40, then you don't pile on with comments like his. And it has nothing to do with a "Turner mentality," it's called sportsmanship.
championhawks 8 months, 1 week ago
“We just don’t want to beat them. We want to beat them bad,” the Wichita native said. “I still wasn’t happy with how much we beat them by. I wish we’d have beat them by more.”
This is the quote that bothers me when you win by 40. I personally don't see anything wrong with anything I have seen that was said by Snyder or another player. However, what the others said were nothing like what was said by Harper.
championhawks 8 months, 1 week ago
Just to clarify, it is the last part of the quote that I don't like, not the first part.
championhawks 8 months, 1 week ago
You want to beat everyone by 1000 if possible, but there is a certain way of handling yourself after, and I don't think Harper handled himself well.
We will have to agree to disagree on that I guess.

Hey kal110386...... if you're so but hurt about what everyone is saying on here then don't come on a KU site. You don't see me trolling on a KSU website. Yeah, you want to beat everyone you play handily and dominate. However, there is a way to conduct yourself when being interviewed and this guy let his emotions get the best of him. KU is not even in teh same realm as KSU in football, but our players go out and play just as hard as KSU. So for this guy to talk about how if we won the game it would be our "Super Bowl" and make it seem like we're just a bunch of worthless nobodys with no talent or fight is a little bit ridiculous.

kal110386, I got no problem with your chest thumping, as your team is solid and got a good win. Every fan is supposed to feel proud for their own team, whatever school that is...But the issue here, and I saw you defending your right to post here since you have a subscription to LJW-->but let me point out that you know full well that it is mostly ku fans that post here. Just like we get troll visitors from Kentucky or Mizzou or wherever. They WANT the banter, so they get what they came for. You want to defend your team, so that is what all your replies proves you are doing, doesnt it?-->Why else would you respond to almost every single comment that you even slightly think is disparaging your beloved team or one of its players. You dont understand that most of us Kansans actually do respect the job Snyder has done, and that there is a reason that stadium is named for him? I have NEVER visited a KState or UNC or Duke or Kentucky site to post comments-->why would I? Funny thing, we never see UNC or Duke people trolling our site (win or loss either way). For the record, (yes I get my opinion too, just like you): I think Harper comments were simply echoing alot of Purple people's sentiments who frankly HATE, hate, hate anything to do with KU. Always have, always will. I have met too, too many Kstaters that think like Mizzoo people for you to tell me any different. Harper said what he knows KSU fans want to hear, and he has been coached very well in that regard. See y'all next year in Lawrence.

Here is more proof that these wins by KSU are more like YOUR superbowl than ours: I bet KState Athletic Dept. will be making DVDs of this game so all the KStaters who think exactly like this can watch this 1 conference game over and over and over. Hey, have some buddies over, crack a beer, and watch the win over, and over, and over. SO, for a KState player to take the 1 victory thing and try to reverse-exaggerate it, is really quite laughable, given KStateAthletic Dept.'s prior and repeated history of making and selling DVD's of 1-game victories over KU. You are the stepchild and prove it by such marketing, dont you? The only DVD's we can get of KU wins over anybody are of the 08Championship, and of the 07-08 OrangeBowl. But I guarantee you KSUAthletics makes a DVD of this lone conference win. Probably make one of the OU win also. How about you guys play for a national championship in football or basketball, and maybe I will be impressed. Bill Self doesnt set his damn target on Kstate...he wants to be competetive with the top10 programs in the nation, year after year. Newsflash: KU Athletic Director+KU alumni (esp WilliamsFund members, just like the AhearnDonor crowd at KSU) knew that Turner Gill Embarrassment had to end, and Weis & his NFL-level staff were brought in for a TOTAL rebuilding job. This is no 1-season turnaround story brewing...this is a 2-3yrs of solid recruiting and teaching a new system+mindset. I am thrilled by having this new staff, but not surprised at all by the KSU/KU score. That was expected, and simply a sign of where Gill+Lew Perkins took the football program. We arent worried for the future, now that Gillidiot is gone. You should be worried you do not get another Ron Prince once the respected Bill Snyder retires...
ralster 8 months, 1 week ago
kal, Stand back and look at the big pix: college B (ku) gets beat big by college A (ksu), and one of the WINNING team's players basically "piles on" with his loose mouth in the press conference. Now be honest: the gracious Bill Snyder would never ever say such a thing in public ("duh, I wish the score was even more lopsided"). Basically Harper was wishing ksu had run up the score even more, wasnt he? Tell me how classy that is, since you love to defend your "guys"? Defend the exact words and intent of Harper's statement! You watch other sports, bball, NFL, etc. Running up the score makes it personally insulting (you gotta know that). Listen joker, if you are here literally defending someone who is saying ksu should have actually insulted ku by running up the score, then its on brother, since you obviously support such unsportsmanlike crap. We will see what purplegasm y'all can generate in Lawrence next year. Right back at you. Snyder retires, and y'all be cryin' at the moon...

KAL, 1 final question: Are you a KState Alumni? Did you graduate from KState?
ralster 8 months, 1 week ago
The overall above exchange is a beautiful illustration of what is the problem with this supposed KSU vs. KU "rivalry". For KU people, there is literally a reciprocal level of hate for our longtime Mizzoo rival, especially its fanbase. Now they are gone. We have never really felt that level of hate towards the "little brother" wearing purple. Some might, but not most. BUT, for the vast majority of KStutter people, they hate KU as bad as Mizzoo people did. So, if you really want a rivalry, you just might get one, as I personally had nothing against Frank Martin, his players, or Bill Snyder or his players-->but SERIOUSLY, if anyone thinks Bruce Weber + Snyder's replacement football coach can cash the checks in a serious, knock-down, drag-out fist-flying rivalry with KU, you are sorely mistaken. The last guy to try in Snyder's place sorely failed. And Bruce Weber wasnt capable of holding Self's jock strap. Proved that at Illinois. Couldnt recruit. And lost control of a promising, non-conf undefeated team in 2011-2012. So, KStaters better be braggin' full force, as all that Purplegasm may be soon to expire. Could be bleak times for years...

No kal, some of us like to "name call" as people visit this site to troll-comment or outright snipe at us or our team. Ha, and you are wrong yet again about "exclusive right of passage"--hey for some of us it is very ingrained in a major way: I have a ku professional school diploma I spent 6figures+4yrs of sweat to get. I personally play and coach basketball. I have attended Self's camps. I have talked with the man about basketball & ku. His philosophies encompass the entire game, both ends of the floor. He is most correct. Proof: more wins last 6yrs than any other Div1 program. We are lucky to have him. I have donated significant funds to the Athletic Dept. When Zenger made his move on Gillidiot, it was time. The WilliamsFund people (just like your Ahearn donor crowd) would not stand such embarrasment on the gridiron. We are now beginning a total rebuilding job. I personally am a BIG NFL fan, liking most teams out there. Really like Weis, and very exciting to see a "non-spread offense" (ksu also refreshing in that regard) and watching it become proficient in a year or so. But we need 2+years of recruiting size, speed, talent. This year will be very rough on the casual ku fan. You mention rooting for the team. Most ku fans are NOT football savvy. I joke against them that just go away, and us diehards will tell you when its "safe" to come watch ku football (about 2yrs). Some of us have supported ku athletics with thou$ands of dollars. So dont tell me how much of a ku fan/bragger/defender I should/shouldnt be!! Go root for purple. God, I just know there is a kstate football or athletics website YOU can log onto, just as easy as logging on here, right? You know there is, but you come here because you want the nasty exchange. You cannot break this diehard, but keep trying. Stage is set. You know all you need to know. Your play, bro.

And just to be clear: I AM one of the ones who hates alot of the KSU fanbase, because of their behavior personally. Didnt used to be that way. I always say to OSU, KSU, OU, TX people "fellow Big12 fan", and usually say something nice about their program. But Ive had a few, including teenagers in front of their parents who couldnt stop sniping at "jayhawks" even in a professional setting when no one was talking sports. For those purple pussies (cats), I got an endless supply of taunts. And buddy, this isnt just internet banter...had a guy in KState basketball shorts try to play the "physical game" w/me in a basketball game this summer (we'd never seen each other before). Well after some of my in-game adjustments&speed changes, he was blabbering about his surgically repaired knee...and I did nothing that would draw a refs whistle. All I will say, is there is a way to adjust to what your opponent is trying to do--Bill Self's philosophies are 1000% correct. Rock 'em...Chalk outline 'em! (If you want to feel insulted more than Harper tried to insult us, then pull up my past posting history, and see the more vicious stuff reserved for troll visitors, mostly purple pussies...not pretty, not meant to be. Offense intended. In writing or in person, no problem. Why? Because it is sporting fun, and evolved as a response to ksu (&mizzoo) haters.)
ralster 8 months, 1 week ago
Kal, let's try this a 2nd time: Are you a KState alumni? Do you have a KState diploma? Or are ya just another 'coattail fan'? We got alot of those types that root for ku basketball too. But when that team loses a game, they bitch the loudest (worse than a woman), and show very poor analytical skill, or jump to ridiculous conclusions/explanations. What will you do if KState has a down year or two under its next coach after Snyder? Since your reason to brag dried up, will you gripe and moan, OR are you KState alumni and will stand by your "down" team in a patient manner? Sorry if you disagree, but having that ku or ksu diploma makes you a MORE invested fan. Period. And those people may respect the fact that opposing alumni simply arent gonna change their stripes, so to speak...there is actually more respect there, unless someone really wants to talk trash perhaps
jayhawkintx1973 8 months, 1 week ago
Even with the loss, There was certainly a lot of progress noticeable in the game. It didn't turn out well for those wanting Cummings in the game, he came in late and did absolutely nothing impressive.
I would say in a couple of years, there won't be so much crowing going on in Manhattan, and here's why. Todd Heaps will know the entire offense as will Turzilli, Pierson, Sims, Omigie, and Justin by this time next season and it won't be as limited. If you can call more than 3 timeouts a half then it wouldn't be an issue but you can't.
Same thing on the Defense, the returners will know the defense and can focus on getting to the ball after reading the offense.
But THIRD! NO COLLIN KLEIN, who is outperforming K-State's wildest expectations.
I would then suspect that after Heaps is Baty, and that Weis will steal a few recruits, by our standards any way, and put together a team that we would be proud to put up against anyone in the country.
This is a project, and it wasn't such a big project until Turner Gill pretty much took the program backwards. He's a nice guy, but he wasn't ready for the big time. He may be one day though, but I look at it playing out this way. It will either be Dave Campo or Clint Bowen as Head Coach in 7 or 8 years.

Sams should watch more tape of Klein. Klein showed uncanny patience waiting for his blocks. But he's got to develop better passing to avoid being another TimTebow (NOT an NFL QB, as cannot make all the passes: exactly why John Elway got rid of him). Would be really nice to see Klein make it in the NFL.
ralster 8 months, 1 week ago
kal, thanks for your interest in ku football, go log on to KSU sports site somewhere, where you belong. Lots of changes in ku football. Weis doing alot of sifting. He dismissed several players when he arrived. Gill's players had over 50 F's. Some of those kumbaya-type of players werent tough enough for Weis, Campo, or the bigXII. So last year's dismal team got even thinner. Jake Heaps was a former 5star top3 (maybe #1) rated highschool recruit his senior year. He, like Crist, suffered an injury, then had a coaching change, and didnt get to play much. Weis is a pro-style QB developer. Im least worried about the QB position. More interested in offensive execution. Im just flat curious if Weis can pull off a pro-style offense at the college level. If he gets pre-NFL-type talent, I think he can. So it all remains to be seen. No rush. Some of us are in it for the long haul. The emotional investment in solidly supporting a legit coach and a team struggling at ground zero may also mean very little tolerance for those that come on here to try to snipe at our coach or team. Will continue to defend Self & his players too...
