— Sophomore outside hitter Sara McClinton led Kansas University with 16 kills to power the 23rd-ranked KU volleyball team to a season series sweep of No. 17 Kansas State on Wednesday night at Ahearn Fieldhouse.

KU won, 13-25, 28-26, 26-24, 27-25.

Kansas (21-5 overall, 9-3 Big 12) moved into sole possession of second place in the Big 12, upending Kansas State (20-5, 7-5) at home for the first time since 2009.

After starting the evening with a lopsided first-set loss, the Jayhawks stormed back to win the next three sets, all by two points.

“We fought really hard,” KU coach Ray Bechard said. “You have to fight hard to beat a good team on the road by two points, three sets in a row.”

McClinton used a .364 attack percentage to lead a balanced offensive attack. For the sixth time this season, four Jayhawks posted double-digit kills. A Manhattan native, fourth-year junior outside hitter Catherine Carmichael, had a big night in front of her home crowd with 14 kills, while sophomore outside hitter Chelsea Albers and fourth-year junior middle blocker Caroline Jarmoc each contributed 11 kills.

Junior setter Erin McNorton had 49 assists and 11 digs for her ninth double-double of the year and added a career-high four blocks.

An undisclosed injury sidelined KU junior libero Brianne Riley from the starting lineup for the first time since Oct. 23, 2010 — snapping a 63-match streak.

KU will host No. 3 Texas, the Big 12 leader, at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at Horejsi Center.

I watched the match on TV. It was exciting and KSU had a huge crowd including their band. The story also doesn't mention that the Jayhawks survived 3 Wildcat set points in the second that would have put them down 2-zip. Bechard had them working!

This team has some real heart. To win in these circumstances without their #1 libero should give them some realconfidence against any BigXII team.

They are receiving far too little coverage from LJW - at least we should get a link to UofKsAthletics articles. It may be asking too much for the coverage to more than recap stats, but LJW should have at minimum a stringer who knows volleyball well enough to analyze real gut-check moments like the end of Set 2 and closing out three sets in a row which went beyond the 25-pt mark.

A great win ladies especially on the road against K-State, unlike other years where we have started out well only to fail in conference this team seems like the real deal.

Nice win! I watched it on TV too. It was an exciting match. Glad to see that a lot of the players will be returning next year too. This should be the foundation for having a consistenlty good volleyball team at KU for decades to come.

Great win! Got home in time to watch the 4th set. Didn't know I could get that excited about volleyball, but it happened.

Was it on TV in the KC area? Are all of our matches televised?
