Kansas University senior forward Kevin Young, who suffered a broken bone in his right hand on Oct. 25, took part in shooting drills on Monday.

“We hope to get him back at practice on Saturday,” coach Bill Self said after KU’s 62-50 victory over Washburn in Allen Fieldhouse.

Wesley starts: KU junior Justin Wesley started. He had one point and four boards in 10 minutes.

Ben McLemore on his 10 rebounds: “Being a guard, coach stresses a lot for me to crash the boards and just box my man out. It helps the team out, so I crash the boards.”

KU freshman Jamari Traylor on the win: “It was definitely ugly, but we were able to win the game. I hope we don’t have to win as many ugly games this year as we did last year, but if we need to do it, we’ll have to do it.”

Recruiting: Dakari Johnson, a 6-10, 265-pound center from Montverde (Fla.) Academy, has announced plans to reclassify to the class of 2013, instead of 2014. He has a recruiting list of KU, Florida, Kentucky, Louisville, Ohio State, Syracuse, Villanova and others. He was the No. 5-rated player nationally in the Class of ‘14 by Rivals.com.

Stats, facts: KU is now 32-3 against Washburn all-time, including 5-0 in exhibition games. ... Washburn's 50 points were the fewest scored by a KU opponent in an exhibition game since it held Pittsburg State to 45 points on Nov. 10, 2009. ... The Jayhawks held the Ichabods to 25.8 percent from the field, the lowest percentage by a KU opponent in an exhibition since Pittsburg State shot 25.3 percent last season. ... KU had 13 blocked shots, most in an exhibition since tallying 15 against Pittsburg State last season. ... After falling behind 10-5, KU went on a 16-3 run midway through the first half. During the run, the Jayhawks went 7-for-10 from the floor. ... Jeff Withey's seven blocks were the most by a Jayhawk in an exhibition since he recorded 10 against Pittsburg State last season. ... During the six-game exhibition season, freshman Perry Ellis shot 68.4 percent from the field (26-for-38).

"The Jayhawks held the Ichabods to 25.8 percent from the field, the lowest percentage by a KU opponent in an exhibition since Pittsburg State shot 25.3 percent last season." and "Jeff Withey's seven blocks were the most by a Jayhawk in an exhibition since he recorded 10 against Pittsburg State last season."

When you read the first half of those sentences, you think it's going to go back at least a few years... Strange wording.

I agree. That drives me nuts. There should be at least a decades cap to use the word "since", unless your talking about a player.

This is the first time the LJW has called the University of Kansas by the incorrect name of Kansas University in an online sports article since it appeared yesterday in the pre-game article.

SORRY!!! I'm not trying to take us there (yet again)! Just having some fun and agreeing with you in my own twisted way.

cut them some slack. Due to budget cuts they don't have an editor for the stats, facts section. They use a database computer program that as soon as the box score is released it compares it to all of the previous box scores in the database and spits out random statistics such as "KU had 13 blocked shots, most in an exhibition since tallying 15 against Pittsburg State last season"

Great to hear Young is back to shooting. I'm in no hurry to see him back on the floor, play it safe, but can't help wondering if he'll play in Atlanta.

Another reclassification I think is only good news for KU. Eventually one of these guys is going to see the whole left by Withey and pick KU.

...and probably see the whole right side as well. :)

Good catch Oak, and no edit button, dang.

It actually let me edit this comment but not he one above.

If Perry Ellis is shooting 68% from the floor - he needs to be shooting A LOT more!

Agreed, but he doesn't mind trading shots for assists.

A little disturbing Traylor seems proud of the win.

Dude, you're supposed to win that one.

If they play like that against MSU we'll lose by 30. Maybe that's what it will take?

I think kevin young is really important to this team , he plays with a swagger and has a toughness about him that teams just seem to overlook . He is one of those players you cant really say what his apparent strength is and what posistion he should play, but he always finds a way to impact a game . Ive noticed he does a good job of really getting under the skin of the player hes defending , kind of like morningstar did .
