Kansas University’s men’s basketball team has scheduled a home-and-home nonconference series against a familiar foe.

Former KU guard Tad Boyle’s Colorado Buffaloes, who have been dominated by the Jayhawks, 122-39, in games played in the Big Seven, Big Eight and Big 12 Conferences, will visit Allen Fieldhouse on Dec. 8.

The Jayhawks will return the trip to Coors Events Center in Boulder, Colo., in December 2013.

“One of the big things (in agreeing to a series) is we’ve got so many people in western Kansas and Colorado who support our team,” said schedule-maker Larry Keating, KU’s special assistant to the athletic director.

“It’s a good game for us. It takes us to a loyal group of alumni and supporters. We’ve always had good crowds when we play there. They’re a good, quality team and Tad is an alum. As soon as they left (Big 12 for Pac-12 this past season) we talked about how it would be good for us to play them again.”

KU coach Bill Self is 17-0 versus the Buffs, including an 8-0 mark at Coors Center, where the Jayhawks are 25-7 all-time. Half of the building is routinely filled with KU fans when the Jayhawks play in Boulder. CU coach Boyle is 0-3 versus KU.

His Buffs — who have gone 32-4 at home the past two seasons — return two starters from last year’s 24-12 NCAA Tournament team. Red-shirt sophomore Shannon Sharpe recently announced plans to transfer a yet-to-be determined school in Southern California for family reasons.

KU in 2012-13 will play Temple and Colorado at home, travel to Ohio State and play Michigan State in the Champions Classic in Atlanta. KU will play two games in the CBE Tournament in Kansas City’s Sprint Center with Washington State, Saint Louis and Texas A&M the possible foes. The complete nonconference schedule should be released within the next two weeks.

Kaun to remain in Russia: Former KU center Sasha Kaun has decided to re-sign with CSKA Moscow through the 2014-15 season.

“In his four years with CSKA, Kaun has become the key player on the court,” CSKA president Andrey Vatutin told euroleague.net. “He showed the desire to improve and he polished his skills even when he was not playing much. Sasha is a well-educated, intelligent, friendly person. It is always a pleasure to work with him.”

Kaun averaged 4.3 points and 2 rebounds in 21 Euroleague games while making 71.2 percent of his shots last season.

“I am glad that we agreed to continue our cooperation. It will be a pleasure to play three more years in a CSKA uniform,” Kaun, a 6-10 native of Tomsk, Russia, said. “I am sure we will win a lot. But especially I’d like to get another chance to win the Euroleague title, because I still don’t have one. And, surely, we should continue our winning series in Russia. Hopefully, the fans will be glad to see me on the court again.”

Sherron to visit: Former KU guard Sherron Collins, who played pro ball in Turkey last season, is planning on working out in Lawrence this summer, he reported on Twitter.

Man, I'd like to see Sasha in the League. I feel like he could be a Collison type player. It doesn't look like we'll ever see it though, I can't blame him if he's got a good fit in Russia.

And the Buffs, eh? The Pac-12 champions. Hehe, that sentence makes me chuckle. It'll be great for the western Kansas people. We own that place.

I agree, but when you win the regular season but aren't good enough to make it into the NCAA tourney it hardly seems like a "championship."

0

Saguaro_Jayhawk 12 months ago

True. At best CU was the Pac 12 Tournament Champions.

However, their conference still considers Washington the conference champion which is what ukanjhox referenced above.

go Sasha! Cool re Buffalos and Tad.

When do we play Maryland?

0

honeyiscool 12 months ago

Sasha is making bank and getting real playing time in his native country, playing a game he loves, and probably sipping some of that quality Russian water. I hear they know how to party out there. He's the man.

As for the Buffs, I hope the Jayhawks go out and schedule a series with Nebraska and TAMU. Anything to piss off the team that shall not be named. Get to it already!

0

Looks like we get TAM in the CBE. I say schedule NU for an annual noncon football game at arrowhead. Wouldn't that be something. :-)

0

phogphan2000 12 months ago

and give them a basketball game in either Sprint or CenturyLink each year to make it worth their while if need be I don't think it's a bad idea with conference realignment still underway for KU to keep strong ties to UNL and CU Starting in 2013 would give Charlie a year to get his house in order but still use it as a recruiting tool

0

texashawk10 12 months ago

I have a feeling scheduling Colorado is more to help out a former Jayhawk than spiting anybody. I wouldn't be shocked to see Tulsa show up fairly soon to help out Danny. KU isn't likely to face A&M in the first game of the CBE. KU is likely to face Washington St. and A&M is likely to face St. Louis first.

0

"I have a feeling scheduling Colorado is more to help out a former Jayhawk than spiting anybody."

But spiting Mizzou is a nice benefit. Kind of like slapping someone with the hand you've just reached out to help someone else.

This a big FU to Missery, as much as it is a game that makes sense for us. However, I will say that I've always viewed CU a little different than the other Benedict Arnolds. First, unlike the other 3 schools, CU was actually a pretty good cultural fit in the Pac 12. They never initiated this mess, MU and NU initiated things, then aTm initiated the second round of defections. CU, I'm fairly certain, was forced to decide before UT and OU whether they were going to make the move. At the time and under the circumstances they would have been foolish to turn down the opportunity. I could say the same about NU, they would have been crazy to turn down the Big 10, but they are more guilty in terms of starting this mess. MU and aTm were simply two schools feeling disrespected and they decided to take their balls and leave. There moves were much less justifiable. I have no problem with playing CU, and I'd have little problem playing NU in any sport other than football. The only way I'd ever play the other two is if it was in a tournament and we had absolutely no choice.

Local KC radio station was pushing a bad rant: Colorado left the Big 12 1st, so if we play CU it makes no sense for us to not play MU. That we won't is just us giving MU a one finger salute and it is making KU look bad. My response is: 1) Playing CU gives us a recruiting presence in Colorado. We already have a recruiting presence in Missouri. 2) Playing CU lets us help one of our own. Playing MU wouldn't help anyone I care about. 3) Bill Self doesn't care to play MU (he doesn't like their fans) and keeping Coach Self happy is something I care a lot about about. 4) We didn't put a tremendous amount of work into setting up an annual game in Arrowhead with CU only to see them leave us hanging. 5) CU knows how to advance beyond the 1st round of the NCAA Tournament. 6) Boulder/Denver Colorado versus Columbia Missouri? You're kidding right? 7) I don't like meth.
And the best reason of all - 5) MU sucks

I am assuming its a cut/paste editing error. He/she had "MU Sucks" in the middle of the list and decided it was better as the crescendo to the list and then in haste forgot to renumber. Obviously you just wanted to rag on a jayhawk and was not able to process anything else.

Personally I don't like playing the former Big XII teams. At the very least I think there should be a certain "cooling" off period before games are scheduled. Now if we play them in pre- or post-season tournaments, well we wouldn't have much controll over that, but I personally wouldn't go out of my way to schedule them.

If you are going to play one of the former schools, why not all? I think it does make KU look bad, especially for all the stink our AD made about not playing MU because they left us and the Big XII. I guess MU was the first school to make noises about leaving the Big XII when they wanted to pack their bags for Big 10 and got jilted.

0

oldalum 12 months ago

CU and NU both made no secret of the fact that they were trying to leave. MU stayed behind claiming their loyalty to the Big12 (while negotiating behind our backs) right up to the minute they switched to the SEC (although they would still like to make a buck playing KU at Arrowhead). The rest of the conference took their word and made a lot of plans they otherwise might not have made, including a new TV contract. MU left knowing they might well have caused the Big12 to lose that contract. I hope no Big12 team ever plays MU again unless forced to by NCAA/BCS games.

0

nuleafjhawk 12 months ago

I personally am not wild about playing former Big 12 teams. They left, so "forget" them. I cannot believe that Coach Self and the rest of the staff did not consult me about this....

I understand the whole Western Kansas Fan thing, but we could also play Colorado State. We'd have more fans than them present also. Tad Boyle? Mmmmm - if he wants to play us, play us in the NCAA Tournament.

As far as making the "m" team look bad, they don't need any help from us. They can look bad all by themselves.

0

memhawk 12 months ago

My feelings as well, CeLo.

0

plasticJHawk 12 months ago

I agree.

This scheduling move was not really about the fans. The fans are just a convenient side benefit.

This schedule addition was made because of Tad Boyle and Mike Bohn and their relationship to KU.

While I respect the desire to be loyal to alumni, I still disagree with scheduling Colorado on the basis of the damage they caused the Big 12 by their premature evacuation.

Thankfully the Big 12 appears to be on stable footing now, but if it had crumbled, and KU ended up in the Big East or worse, it would have been partially Colorado's fault.

0

yates33333 12 months ago

"While I respect the desire to be loyal to alumni." I hope so. All grads not just BB players.

0

Actually half those KU fans live in Boulder or the Denver Metro. I doubt a CSU matchup would be half as big of a turnout. Also, Boulder is a cool place to hang out before and after the game, whereas Ft. Collins? Meh.

0

carterpatterson 12 months ago

This is a good move. We'll be 3 years removed from Colorado leaving. Big 12 money is going to be rolling in. MU will be rescheduled once Texas and aTm are in 3-5 years. We should have our football shop in order then.

0

LTCUSARet 12 months ago

You keep hoping. Texas won't be rescheduling A&M (I'm a Jayhawk first, Aggie second), just as KU won't be rescheduling mOO. CU is a totally different situation than A&M, NU and especially mOO.

Do I wish CU had stayed? Absolutely. But I totally understand why CU did what they did, and in their shoes would have done the same given the opportunity. CU had been looking at the Pac-10 and the west coast (alumni base, recruiting) for years. CU had no significant athletic weight to use in negotiations with their programs being down, and with the Texas schools trying to move en masse to the Pac10, it looked as if the Big 12 ship was sinking, leaving CU stranded. But the Pac10 was averse to having a religious school (Baylor) in their secular mix, so to thwart the Texas bloc's efforts re: Baylor they offered a straw to CU (a better option in every way except football) and CU took it. Totally different situation from the other three schools that chose to leave instead of using their significant clout to work together to help keep the conference on solid footing and pave the way for the future.

For me, the single best thing coming out of this mess is that I can throw mOO fans out with the trash and no longer have to deal with them. KU v mOO has become a toxic relationship, best darn divorce ever. And I'll gladly watch KU play CU while refusing to play mOO. Thumb noses, give 'em the finger, revenge is a dish best served cold, made your bed sleep in it, any and all of the preceding.

0

You left out, "karma is a beaitch!"

Fans need to realize how much this move will snub Meth U. Just remember back and how Meth U assumed the border war would continue because they felt like we would kiss up to their crack pipes. Well... the only acceptable crack in Kansas is the crack of dawn. They might as well change their school motto to the Cheech & Chong movie... "Up in smoke!"

Because smoke is the only thing rising out of Columbia.

Sherron may want to go to the Holidome when he gets back to Lawrence. They still have his meal from the banquet that he missed after his last season. I think it consists of a plate of crow.

Serously though, he could be a big help to some of the current and new guards. If Hudy could work with Tharpe on the physical side and SC on the skills side, he could be a big help off the bench. EJ could also benefit from some of SC's toughness and penetration prowess. I think SC should be very inspirational to the entire team.

0

memhawk 12 months ago

Here's an idea. Let's schedule games against any team whose coach has a connection to KU. We could make a whole non-conf. schedule against those teams now. Too early for me to tap into the old memory banks. I bet I'll see a list of the potential matchups here today.

0

DCLawHawk 12 months ago

I don't mind making an exception for Tad. Nor would I mind making one for Turg if he were still at aTm. But wait, we don't even have to make an exception for Turg. We can schedule a home and home with Maryland right now. They are also a good, quality team, and Turg is also an alum. Not only do we need a recruiting presence in the DC area, but there is a sizable fan base here. I can't believe KU never gave T-Rob a chance to play in his hometown. What happened to that tradition? There are only about 6 D-1 programs in the immediate vicinity. Mr. Keating, please rectify this situation ASAP by scheduling Maryland. We will put enough people in the Comcast Center to get a good Rock Chalk chant going. Meanwhile, I'm praying KU plays WVU in Morgantown on a weekend so I can drive out there for the game.

0

KansasRedLegger 12 months ago

Agree with the posters above who don't like this move. CU left the conference and should not be willingly scheduled by KU, even if Boyle is a KU alum. Conference pride and unity is more important than "rewarding" a former Jayhawk with a home-and-home. As far as I know, this is the first defector scheduled by a current Big 12 school in one of the two major sports (NU and OU had talked about a football home-and-home in 2020-21 but never inked as far as I know). I think this sends a bad signal to the rest of the Big 12.

I don't care if we play Colorado, Nebraska, and A&M (although the Aggies are worth boycotting). I hate Mizzou, and playing them would be good for their program. Them leaving freed Kansas from the obligation.

Yes, KU would look better if they had just said this rather than linking it to Mizzou's exit, but we all know why they did. Sure, Mizzou leaving put the Big 12 at risk, and it angered both Zenger and Gray-Little. But it just added to the feelings already in place.

I live in St. Louis, and when Mizzou fans whine to me and try to play the hypocrite card, I tell them it IS personal. We don't like Mizzou and never did. The Antlers make them a special class of disgusting, and the manner in which they have been allowed to exist for decades says a lot about the Mizzou administration.

But Mizzou should be used to it. Because all I hear is their whining. "Kansas hates us. The Big 12 hates us. The NCAA hates us. Th KC Star and StL Post-Dispatch hates us. ESPN hates us." It goes on and on, all year long. But they are too arrogant to see the common denominator.

And as far as I am concerned, Colorado and Nebraska acted in their own best intrest, right or wrong. After they left, the Big 12 made changes and asked for each team to commit to staying. A&M and Mizzou lied. Thy worked back channels to not just leave, but hoped it would topple the Big 12 to make their exit easier. So for leaving, I put Mizzou and A&M on a different category.

It is too bad the media is too simple minded to put all of this together are deal with the big picture. The hypocrite story is just easier to write, and it sells more papers and draws more eyeballs.

0

MoonwalkMafia66 12 months ago

I agree for the most part, but I don't think that anything really excuses leaving the Big 12. That being said, the Mizery thing still really bothers me, for no other reason than we keep hearing this whole "KU is scared to play us" thing. What annoys me to no end about Mizery is that they were told if they left KU would not play them in any sport. They would put KU's future in serious jeopardy and we weren't going to take that lying down. Mizery called KU's bluff and the administration stuck by what they said; Texas told A&M the same thing. I don't want to hear this crap anymore. Good riddance to all of them and I enjoy seeing them all lose in their new and "better" conferences.

0

jahawkdave 12 months ago

CU game has no appeal to me at all, just gives CU a chance to make KU fans by a 3 game pack to watch the hawks in Boulder. I would rather see us play Whichita State, sure it's a "nothing to gain everything to lose" game but so is CU. It would be a fun atmosphere in the roundhouse.

0

dylans 12 months ago

I live in western Kansas. There will be a bus load of my neighbors going to Boulder for that game and staying in the same hotel as the players. It's been a yearly trip for most. It's about an hour further to AFH and it costs significantly more for tickets in Larryville, but that is the annual Trip I make. However, the renewing of this game is exciting in the opportunity that it creates for my friends and neighbors.

This is great for so many reasons:

  1. Our vast Western Kansas and Colorado Fans again get to DOMINATE the Coors Center and watch our Jayhawks live.

  2. Keep viable/strengthen our Western US presence which can only help recruiting and expand the KU national exposure

  3. Slap Mizzery and remind them that we OWN Kansas City, no need to help you out in KC... And oh yeah, we are strong in Denver and want to further strengthen our position there.

  4. Our record... We dominate out there!

Rock Chalk!

Because of Boyle and our West KS fanbase, I am okay with the Colorado scheduling. However, as a MO resident, I am still bitter that my tax dollars have to support the Turncoat Tigers. Never in my lifetime will I opt for another regular season game with that scurvy bunch. Even if Mizzou were savvy enough to hire Danny Manning (who probably would never consider such a possibility), I would voice negatives against such scheduling. Can't decipher the incredible recent posting of Sporting News (or whoever) offering the Tigers a preseason ranking higher than Bill Self's Jayhawks. That prognostication calls for a DIck Vitale type drubbing! I still chuckle over that fool's ranking the Jayhawks as a 5th place conference contender. He took a ten-story headlong fall on that prediction...and seems to have come out of it with his head on straighter.

0

jhawkrulz 12 months ago

Danny Manning would never go to Missouri for various reasons 1) He is a Jayhawk (therefore not a traitor) 2) He actually wants to win 3) He wants to go to a final four 4) He wants to win a national champtionship

Your premise is in error with DM ever considering that thought.

Other than that, I agree, I wish that we could change the border, so KC fully resides in Kansas.

0

HouTexHawk 12 months ago

In general, I am not in favor of scheduling games with defectors. Colorado may be a little different in that there is a huge alumni base in the Denver/ Boulder area and historically, the KU fans have turned the Coors Center into Allen Field House West. My understanding is that this is only a two year contract.

Of all of the four schools that left the Big 12, CU's leaving is probably the one that was most accepted and understood and as a result there is probably the least amount of bad blood between CU and the rest of the Big 12. I don't want to have anything to do with the other schools that left.

MU fans need to realize that (in basketball) they need KU more than KU needs them. Think about it. KU is part of the national conversation throughout the entire season. In general, MU is part of the national conversation on when it plays KU during ESPN rivalry week or as part of CBS doubleheader late in the season. Other than that, when is anyone nationally talking about MU basketball. I think this past year was an exception because of the success of their team.

0

oxcaljayhawk 12 months ago

No problem with playing CU. I'm glad they jumped Baylor's invite. The thought of schools like TT, Baylor, and OK state being in the P16 with CU and KU out is absurd on its face.

I also like the giving the finger to Mizery.

As for playing MIzery again, I wish we would publicly say that we will play MU again in FB when their team goes to a BCS game and their BB team after they make it to the FF. That ought to put the rivalry on hold for the next 100 years or so.

0

MoonwalkMafia66 12 months ago

I don't know how I feel about this. I agree with a lot of the comments about not being in favor of playing defectors, and I don't buy the whole alumni/west coast excuse. Little kid ethics here: When you commit to something, you should remain committed. So what their programs were struggling, I don't care. If they were winning, they would've had no problem staying in the Big 12, but they simply were not. Same thing can be said about Nebraska. They weren't given the exposure they were used to in the past, leaving them to a back seat to Texas, OU, and K-State. I don't know how much KU has to gain from this, and I think the whole recruiting thing is over-exaggerated. Whatever, we will see.

0

It is more important to schedule CU in football than basketball.

KU football needs teams from BCS conferences they can beat, and it still doesn't look like there are going to be many of those for a few seasons yet.

Sherron twitters that he plans to come home to Lawrence. Splendid. To hell with memories of the banquet, we need Sherron back on the premises, back in the family fold. The innercity Chicago Kid, flying back to the Jayhawk Roost. I retain fond visions of Sherron and his buddy Minnesota Cole standing arm in arm after memorable Jayhawk outings. In my 70+ years I have witnessed much of what author Robert B. Parker calls "the sour stench of racism," ..."the squalor and sadness and desperation" of a populace caught up in the boundaries of ethnicity.
From the recruitment and overwhelming presence of Wilt right down to 2012 Jayhawk Hoops, the sport of basketball at the University of Kansas (did I word that proberly?) has done much to bury and supercede traditional lines of racism in this otherwise magnificent nation. Even the Morningstar family pet did much to break down barriers for the likes of a Sherron Collins, who must have thought he had, indeed, entered something of a Wonderland when he first set foot in Lawrence, KS. For hundreds upon hundreds of fans and followers, Jayhawk Basketball represents the pinnacle of social inneraction among the races in the Heartland. We need Sherron Collins back in our midst during this 10th summer of Bill Self Kansas Hoops. A player who represents a 21st century Jayhawk legend settles in, comes to peace with his frantic dreams for professional acumen, and plans to return to the site where he rose to national fame and prominence. Splendid.

Spot on, REHawk!

A huge part of the magic of KU basketball is summed up perfectly with your words:

"For hundreds upon hundreds of fans and followers, Jayhawk Basketball represents the pinnacle of social interaction among the races in the Heartland."

I was raised in Kansas and faced racial issues most of my life. KU basketball has been a huge help with me "bridging the gap" and discovering that all people can come together for a great celebration.

I never thought Sherron should leave Lawrence. Few understand his situation... but he is, without doubt, a walking inspiration for those who really know Sherron. I am hopeful he will find a permanent position within the basketball program in the not-so-distant future.

The magic Sherron brought to the final moments of our last National Championship is the same magic that surrounds him today and forever by coming home to Lawrence! Some things were just meant to be... and Sherron's magic exists through the synergy he has with KU. He knows that now... and he has struggled trying to develop his magic away from Lawrence.

Bring it on home, Sherron!

It isn't about who left it is about how they left. CU gave notice to the contract, they would pay the exit fees and wait one more year to the contract if asked. It was a mutual separation, sure a divorce but as amicable as it could be.

When Meth heads left, they cried chicken little held press conference they were headed to the Big 10 as if Mighty Mo river flowed north into the great lakes. Said it was a match made in heaven, where we fit best. When snubbed by the B10 they courted the SEC saying the B12 was unstable. Heck yeah it was, as they were buring down the house. Meth U. was told by B12 Neinas and SEC chiefs, fine go, but wait one more year to let dust settle and to work out the schedules so WVG and others could avoid nasty law suits. It makes sense to just hold tight for one more year to let things shake out. Even behind scenses SEC was good with plan, then No way, Meth U told SEC take us now, or drop it. It wasn't the departure it was the manner of the departure that has soured the grapes of wrath.

Colorado left us and we are already scheduling to play them at the end of the year? R u for real? Sorry but I am still miffed that they left us. Maybe in a decade
I will be ok with playing them again but not now when it's still so early. What r u people doing????

Colorado would have left for the Pac 12 even if NE, MO and A&M had stayed, They did 2% of the harm NE, MO and A&M did. So I have no animosity to them.

And Tad is an alum, and we help our own.

And we have huge #s of Jayhawk fans out West and in CO-- we should be playing out there every year - I say in our off years with CO (where they play here) we sched Air Force or Colorado State.

KUbsee69 12 months ago

Ah ... we get to play in AFH West again. Home and home in this case refers to the KU crowd at both sites.

0

PikesPeakSmitty 12 months ago

I think AFW is Bramlidge. Lawrence West is Boulder. I could be wrong.

Nice for our thousands of KU fans that dominate the attendance at CU games, but I don't like CU getting all of that money for their only sellout of the year. I'd rather play CSU or Air Force and let our fans go to those games.

0

BoulderHawk 12 months ago

Air Force and CSU would not get the same attendance.

AFH West is in Vegas.

0

memhawk 12 months ago

Yeah! That's a perfect neutral site where there would always be a majority of KU fans no matter who we play. I went to the games there when we played Ohio U. and Arizona. You would have thought Arizona, being so close to Nevada, would have had the dominate attendance. But, KU represented at least 75% of the crowd. My vote is for games in Vegas as often as possible.

Can't say I'm too excited. NCAA made a big statement about strength of schedule by slamming Mizzou with the last 2 seed last season. In my opinion this helps the buffs more than us. Though it's close to Western Kansas, I'd wager most of the KU fans that show up are from Denver and Boulder.

0

hawkinator 12 months ago

KU needs to keep playing the big dogs and not the small frys. Our toughest schedule in years with an "undermanned" team and we make it to the NC. I don't care what conference the buffs left or are currently in, or how favorable the venue is. Jayhawk fans travel well regardless.

The last game we played in Boulder, CU was well represented. I'd say for the first time they weren't outnumbered by KU fans. Maybe the days for CU playing away games at home are over.

0

phogphan2000 12 months ago

That was a special occasion, last time getting KU in Boulder as a conference opponent. It was a rare occasion at a CU sporting event where I could have sold my ticket for well above face value. Could be a big deal again when KU returns I suppose, but probably will depend on how good CU fans think their chances are. In general CU's woes on the fb field and Boyle's improvements of the bball program could result in higher ticket prices and better attendance I suppose.

Hip, Hip Hurray from Colorado! Looking forward to December '13 already! I just hope the game isn't on a Wednesday like the last couple of times.

I am glad to see us play CU again. My wife and I made it a yearly pilgrimage (to Boulder) to see our Hawks at the CEC -- and the drive from Lawrence is no joke! CU leaving the Big12 for the PAC12 is fine, they fit better with those schools, imo. Personally, I like CU and almost went to college there instead of KU. I have no problem playing the Buffs these next two years, whatwith the KU athletic department connections in Boulder. As for MU, I don't give a freak about them.

As a graduate of both schools (but loyalties strongly favoring all things Kansas), I am delighted to see friendly ties remain between KU and CU. I loved wearing blue to the KU games at the Coors Events Center, helping turn it into a home-away-from-home for the Jayhawks.

One not-so-friendly memory I have of the series is witnessing Danny Manning get ejected for participating in a brawl on the court there in '88. It wasn't much of a fight, but the refs had to throw out somebody from Kansas, and Danny seemed to be the easy choice. As I recall, he did throw a punch, but a comically weak one. Could be a useful experience for him as he takes over at Tulsa.

I love seeing KU take care of it's own, in this case Tad Boyle and the KU fans of western Kansas and eastern Colorado. Jayhawk Nation is big enough to be friendly to worthy opposition. Bring on the Golden Hurricanes. And if the KU-CU series is a slap at unworthy Misery, so much the better.

So Self is 17-0 against Colorado. Pretty impressive considering how tough some of those Colorado teams have been with Cory Higgins and Alec Burcs.

We won't play MU but we'll play CU? I don't think we should play MU, NU, CU, or ATM.

0

PikesPeakSmitty 12 months ago

CU is coached by a Jayhawk. CU is in awesome Boulder. CU left because the ship was sinking for a pretty sure thing in the Pac 12. CU has decent class. Methsewery and Columbia have none of those things. Who cares about AM and NU. Lincoln and College Station? Yawn.

agree, even though I like Tad Boyle.

This will make some Denver alum very happy, and Western Kansas people, but we shouldn't be playing ANY of the Big 12 deserters. Someday, maybe, but not one year after they've left.

0

JHWKDW 12 months ago

Ah Colorado should be happy to play us!We helped them get out of the Texas Longhorn Conference(Formerly known as the big 12 Conference)!LOL!They should fall to the ground and hug us for helping them get out!

Nah when we turned down the Pac-12 they jumped on it!I do not have hard feelings for them! They get even revenue sharing, and no Longhorn Ring they have to kiss!

The only thing would make it better if we got to play them in Football!

Look forward to playing them and maybe more Pac-12 teams!

I think it's going to be funny when MU fans have zero decent home games next year as Calipari and UK will most likely pull some strings to get them at home and same for BillyD and UF. Since those are the only quality opponents in the SEC next year (UT could be good) MU fans will complain twice as much now about no game with KU.

I'd guess half of CU's student body is from California, so their move to the Pac12 while a little upsetting on general principle made a lot of sense for them. Also it should have set up a great skiing rivalry with Utah. Throw in the fact their "rival" Nebraska was leaving for the B1G and it's hard to blame them.

Probably good to play a game at altitude every so often, so players know what it's like in case of tourney locations in places like SLC or ABQ. Always good to play an alum like Boyle. Definitely a good hook up for KU fans west of Hays.

The bad side of it is CU fans don't have a lot of class (whole bundle of spoiled, trust-fund babies out there) and I don't see CO as that fertile of a recruiting ground. As far as Pac12 opponents go Washington, USC, UCLA give better exposure to recruits. UNLV wouldn't be a terrible school to play OOC either as far as the Western US is concerned.

0

hawkinator 12 months ago

If I'm not mistaken, KU fans are also called "spoiled, trust-fund babies". I mean, like 75% of the student body is from KC/Overland Park. Just a thought before we start hurling stones.

I can't help but feel that shooting 71.2% should warrant more minutes for Kaun, were they holding him back this year to make sure they could keep him signed or something? Sasha Kaun is a beast and should be "the key player on the court"

Don't know where Sherron is at with his basketball career, I'm glad he did play this past year. Would love to see him take the initiative to get in shape in Lawrence and make another push for the NBA. He has NBA range, quickness and fire. Bulls obviously needed a different backup PG for Rose right?

I see no reason to boost the economy of Boulder or to give the Buffs an opportunity to ruin CBS's perfect record against them. I have enjoyed going to all of the CU games in Boulder for the past 20 or so years with my family. CU deserted the Big 12, end of story. If Texas and Oklahoma wouldn't have stood up when they did we would have been hoping for the Big East, ACC or maybe even worse. If we are going to coddle deserters we should coddle the ones from which we benefit. Unfortunately Missouri is the only school from which we would profit playing in basketball. The reference to all of the fans in Western Kansas and Colorado appears to be a red herring, we have many more in St.Louis and Kansas City. It is difficult for us old fans to accept that this has become a money game, but since it clearly is, why have we again failed to play it smart?

0

BoulderHawk 12 months ago

I'm pretty sure the economy of Boulder does not benefit much by KU playing here. Other than the team possibly staying a night in Colorado most of the fans don't because they already live here. There may be a small percentage of visitors that stay over night but even the folks from western Kansas are not that far away. I am not sure where your vitriol stems from . Missery , NU and Texas AM were much more disingenuous in their attempts to leave the conference and when they did leave the conference were much more contentious on the date they were leaving and the penalties they payed. If you lived in Missouri you would still have reasonable options to watch Kansas BBall outside of Columbia. We here do not have such options. Let go of your anger . Get over it. CU is not misery . Their fans are much more well behaved and they and the local Kansas fans are deserving of this series.

umcnotmizzou 12 months ago

Let's please stop calling "them" MIZZOU as they like to be called, when in fact they are just UM-C / University of Missouri - Columbia.

AND The SEC is incorrect too, it should be "SC".

Southeastern is ONE word, not TWO.

Missouri, apparently will fit in great down south...

Does anybody find this home-and-home series also a not-so-subtle crotch shot at Missouri?

Look, you have to give props to Zenger for this one. We basically get 1.5 homes games out of this, and we give a bird finger to MU? That's brisk baby!

I have mixed feelings. I live in Boulder and was bummed the annual KU basketball games and every other year football games were going away when CU bolted. All in all it was a decent move for CU to switch conferences. I don't think KU should reward CU, it appears it is being done as a nice gesture to Boyle & Bohn. (btw, Bohn hit a golf ball into my in-laws back yard yesterday while we were back there having a nice post-Bolder Boulder lunch... pleasant exchange when his Titleist with a Buffalo on it was returned to him, we're CU season ticket holders in football) I don't think KU has anything to gain by adding the Denver market to it's travel schedule. The series may truly be for the alums that buy the tix to the game. I will probably pony up the $ for the three-game package they make us buy as part of the KU game. I am not sure we should offer to play any ex-Big12 teams voluntarily, but I am perfectly happy with not playing Mizzou.

Isn't it great? I too think that this is a direct jab at the idiots to the east. I am completely okay to have KU playing Colorado...even on a long-term, yearly non-conference basis. It can't hurt in the fact that they are a Pac-12 team which looks much better than some school from a lower mid-major conference. Is Colorado getting better? Absolutely. Even better for our and their SOS...plus they'll get a home sellout every two years...

As for the other three who left...this is my feelings:

Texas A&M = It'd only benefit them to play KU. Not much history and even that, it was one-sided and dull.

Nebraska = I understand why they left but perhaps in a few years (5-10 years) we can potentially start to reschedule them...but even then, I wouldn't do a home-and-home with them. They can come here or play a neutral site game at the Sprint Center...

Missouri = N E V E R. Matter of fact, I'd schedule every other D-I school in their own state within the next few years...schedule Missouri State, SE Missouri, UMKC, and Saint Louis. Those four probably would be up for it and it'd probably take the locals in Jefferson City a few years to figure out what is going on... :)
