Missouri’s Frank Haith is AP Coach of the Year

— Frank Haith has capped his first season at Missouri by being selected The Associated Press' Coach of the Year.

Haith took over the Tigers after seven years at Miami. He was presented the award Friday after receiving 21 votes from the 65-member national media panel that selects the weekly Top 25.

Missouri won 30 games and the Big 12 tournament and was ranked in the AP poll the entire season, reaching second for one week and third in the final poll. The Tigers were a No. 2 seed in the NCAA tournament but were knocked out in the first round by Norfolk State. The voting was done before the NCAA tournament.

Haith is still dealing with aftermath of an NCAA investigation into the program at Miami.

John Calipari of Kentucky and Tom Izzo of Michigan State tied for second with 10 votes each.

The only other Missouri coach to win the award was Norm Stewart in 1994.

The selection of Haith is a great example of the stupidity of journalists. To paraphrase Woody Allen, that anyone takes seriously anything these fools write is totally amazing.

Bville Hawk 7 years, 7 months ago

Hey, he took MU from the mid-heap level of the dumpster to the top of the dumpster. You suppose he's having a 'team unity building watch party' at his house this weekend?

JayHawkFanToo 7 years, 7 months ago

There should be a rule that prevents, a coach from a #2 or higher seed that loses in its first game in the tournament, from winning the award.

Even in the SEC, it's all downhill for MU from here on. The only change is that instead of being routinely spanked by KU, it will be routinely spanked by UK.

ahpersecoachingexperience 7 years, 7 months ago

Sooooooooooooooo, what does that make the Norfolk State coach?

Sae Thirtysix 7 years, 7 months ago

Not sure, but is that NSU in ur F4?

Dude????

Sae Thirtysix 7 years, 7 months ago

Is that NSU in your F4

Nice choice of MethU. Haith appreciates your support chump

HawksWin 7 years, 7 months ago

I woke up my neighbor from laughing so hard!!! Good one ahper.

Bridgett Walthall 7 years, 7 months ago

Um, ok? Maybe voting should happen AFTER the tourney from now on, because this is just silly. This makes the AP look really dumb.

dustfan 7 years, 7 months ago

I'm not saying he deserves it but these awards have nothing to do with the NCAA tourney, therefore, their 1st round (2nd round technically) exit should not factor in at all.

johninkc1 7 years, 7 months ago

Haith did a good job but shouldn't the coach of the year at least be in the Elite 8 or Final 4. Seems like they vote too early. Clearly the BIG 12 coaches thought Bill and Fred did a better job than Frank and since Bill made it to the Final 4, I can only draw one conclusion- Bill is the Coach of the Year! Rock Chalk!

FMTXJayhawk 7 years, 7 months ago

I am getting use to the press not making any sense....

Danny Hernandez 7 years, 7 months ago

WOW......not sure I'd have voted for Frank but hey, what do I know?

Justin Kruse 7 years, 7 months ago

He did a good job coaching a very talented team that he had handed to him that lost in the first round. Congratulations.

By MI$$OU standards, they have two national championships this year, the Big 12 tourney and Coach of the Year. Enjoy that while you're watching us this weekend.

Rock Chalk

nuleafjhawk 7 years, 7 months ago

not to be nit-picky, but they had 3 championships. They beat KU once.

dustfan 7 years, 7 months ago

lol, right? The players had to stop the fans from rushing the court.

Justin Kruse 7 years, 7 months ago

Totally forgot that one. 3 new banners for them to hang this year.

bradynsdad 7 years, 7 months ago

Did anyone else see the 3poibt contest last night? They interviewed haith, he looked stoned. He seriously looked like he just finished a fatty. It was classic.

nuleafjhawk 7 years, 7 months ago

yeah, but Denmon did awesome. I think he actually got a higher score than a couple of the women.

dustfan 7 years, 7 months ago

hmm? What do you mean by higher? maybe iswydt

JayDocMD 7 years, 7 months ago

Anthony Davis voted AP POY. Guess AP voters love blocked shots.

shelleysue 7 years, 7 months ago

Stupid. What Bill did with this team ... and is STILL doing, is far more worthy of coach of the year. Gawd I hate Missouri.

NorthStarHawk 7 years, 7 months ago

Enjoy it while you've got it.....this will likely be the only award on the wall for a while.

FLJHK 7 years, 7 months ago

Well, they certainly have space in that vacuous Mizzou trophy case.

Vernon Riggs 7 years, 7 months ago

That banner will look nice between the '2nd Place Big 12-2012' Banner and the '2012 NCAA Tournament Participant' Banner that they will hang in MethZoo Arena. Should be a 'wild' night in Columbia. Congrats!

Dan Harris 7 years, 7 months ago

and the 17 straight meth cooking championships!

Stan Unruh 7 years, 7 months ago

Nice to know Haith will share the award with North Fork State's coach Evans!! At least he should.

nuleafjhawk 7 years, 7 months ago

Just as long as Bill Self didn't win it. That guy has no clue how to coach. ;-)

RockCaCO3 7 years, 7 months ago

So I now know to disregard any AP award. Whatever.

DoctorTK 7 years, 7 months ago

Frank Haith did a marvelous job at MU.

Bill Self is simply better.

I read a comment about KU winning the academic bracket. I finally found the original source from Inside Higher Ed. For anyone interested, the link is posted below.

http://www.insidehighered.com/news/2012/03/12/2012-ncaa-march-madness-academic-performance-tournament

http://www.insidehighered.com/sites/default/server_files/files/NCAA-Tournament-Printable-Bracket-2012.jpg shows the complete bracket.

The winner of last year's academic bracket was Butler, but Kansas was the champion in 2010. See http://www.usatoday.com/news/education/2010-03-15-march-madness-academics_N.htm for an old USA Today article.

That's two out of three years.

Bill Self is not simply better than the AP Coach of the Year.

Bill Self for President!

  • Think about his qualities - Is there a better candidate to "rebuild" our country?

Wow... Curiously, Haith has been able to enjoy his award much longer than any other AP COY selection!

jgkojak 7 years, 7 months ago

Its great that he is able to enjoy it without the burden of competing in the Final Four and he's not worn out by a long journey through the tournament.

Dan Harris 7 years, 7 months ago

Hopefully Davis winning AP POY will give T-Rob extra motivation IF we're fortunate enough to play Ksucky in the championship game.

dylans 7 years, 7 months ago

How can the only unanimous All America selection not be the POY?

justinryman 7 years, 7 months ago

It was like the NFL this year. Aaron Rodgers gets the League MVP, but Drew Brees, gets the NFC QB of the year.

How do you not win your divisions QB of the year, but the league MVP????

justinryman 7 years, 7 months ago

How in all get out did he beat Calipari?

Oh wait it's a Cinderella story.

No, that's not it. Oh he beat Kansas once this year? That has to be it. So Scott Drew Finished Second?????

I just don't get it. Nope don't get it at all.

bigXIImatters 7 years, 7 months ago

This must be National Least Deserving Award Day! Anthony Davis won POY Frank Haith won COY What's next? Trump winning the mega millions jackpot???

kugrad93 7 years, 7 months ago

Based on the argument that a coach of the year should have to reach the Final Four, Self would have to give back the AP award he got in 2009. Most sports awards that are voted on by the press are based on regular-season results. The national media probably expected Kansas to be good (they were preseason favorites to win the league). Missouri's success was more of a shock.

Scott Smetana 7 years, 7 months ago

Which is more pathetic..... Haith Coach of the Year or Obama's Nobel Prize?

what a joke.

Dyrk Dugan 7 years, 7 months ago

none of these awards are based on the postseason at all. So TRob gets unanimous pick, 1st team All American, based completely on the regular season and well deserved. And Moo gets the coaching award.

Frank Haith wins 27 games, finishes 2nd in a major conference by playing seven guys, five of them seniors.

Bill Self wins 26 games, wins the league for the eighth time in a row, basically playing seven guys, two of them seniors (one a former walk on, not actively recruited by KU).

and in this vote Self wasn't even in top 3? it's simply stunning to say the least. Somebody got paid off somewhere.

You can have your COY award. We'll take our FF appearance and then some.....(my goodnes i hope it's and then some). Because the coaching jobs between these two schools....as far as the overall season goes, is NOT close.

Michael Fine 7 years, 7 months ago

They can hang that from the rafters. At least until the NCAA review finishes and Frank is banned from coaching in college!

Enjoy!

sigephandy 7 years, 7 months ago

I am sure that there is plenty of room in the Missoura trophy case. Might have to push over that 1932 tennis tournament trophy, but whatever.

GeoHawk15 7 years, 7 months ago

This is laughable. Weak SOS with seniors he inherited. Doesn't the AP look at that? Haith proved nothing yet as a coach, and given his track record at Miami and this year's tournament, the AP will look like a bunch of fools when Mizzou's program fades into obscurity in the SEC next year.

As for Davis winning AP POY, I can stomach that. Davis and TRob have been very close the last several weeks and there are good arguments for both players. In the end, the ESPN hype machine tipped the scales. There's still the Naismith award!

actorman 7 years, 7 months ago

That's great stuff for them. They can hang the banner next to their 2012 Big XII Tournament Champions banner.

Spencer Goff 7 years, 7 months ago

Yet another valid argument of why the Associated Press should have limited Constitutional Rights.

Was it a sympathy vote or premature evotacation? Stay classy AP.

Jayhawk1958 7 years, 7 months ago

Tom Izzo? He underacheived in the tournament and had a 1st team AA.

Mike Kendall 7 years, 7 months ago

Let me vomit with you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

mojayhawk 7 years, 7 months ago

Question for Coach Self: AP blah blah blah? or Final Four? I think we know which one Coach Self would rather have.

HawkinPA 7 years, 7 months ago

Self won COY in the Big X!! right? So Haith isn't even COY in his own conference but he is NCOY? Oh wait, Haith coaches in the SEC so he beat out Calipari I get it

jhyphene 7 years, 7 months ago

If Missouri's coach is the coach of the year, what is KU's coach?

He's coaching this weekend.

LSHawk 7 years, 7 months ago

This is a total joke and it will be obvious next year!!!

Mike Kendall 7 years, 7 months ago

Haith AP Coach Of the Year! Yeah, right. Seriously? One & Done and gosh, I think I am a pretty damn good coach. What a joke. This is why I have a personal policy of not taking too much stock in post-season awards. They are voted by some folks that simply don't have a clue. End of story.

Mike Barnhart 7 years, 7 months ago

Now that Mizzou has historically flamed out, giving him the award seems silly. Since we're in the final four, however, I'll swallow my pride and give the guy his due, they were pretty impressive before March 15th!

RockCaCO3 7 years, 7 months ago

Calipari and Izzo tied for second. Self wasnt even in the top 3. AP writers confirmed to be teenage girls from Canadian middle school.

jayhawkinATL 7 years, 7 months ago

I have a question: are there different AP voters for the all-American teams and POY?

Since TRob was the only unanimous AP all-American, it would make sense that he would have been AP's POY. Just does NOT compute!

Orangedog87 7 years, 7 months ago

Coach of a team with 5 seniors who were beaten by a lower ranked team with 1 starting senior that fought back from 19 points down.....really? that losing team's head dude is coach of the year with an investigation of his previous coaching job ongoing...that dude?

says a lot but nothing impressive certainly not about coaching ability or the press

Orangedog87 7 years, 7 months ago

My GOY by COY (game of the year by coach of the year).....KU vs NC in the elite 8.....

a school with 5-6 (not sure of the exact number as our press has printed both numbers....kind of explains why they get confused when voting) Big Mac All Americans (without the BB cheese) gets beat by a lower ranked team with no Big Mac All Americans (who have the BB cheese), a walk on first off the bench player and a team having a so called down BB year.....GOY by COYBOOOOYAAAAHHHHH

RCJHKU (I did not need to tell you that....but as a Jayhawk.... its how we do it)

Also POY...TROB ..he has the only POY BB cheese and that cheese cant be found in Kentucky
