North Carolina starting point guard Kendall Marshall will not play against Kansas and also will not be in uniform, UNC officials confirmed about an hour before Sunday's game.

Marshall, who fractured his right wrist in UNC's third round NCAA Tournament game against Creighton, when through practice on Saturday for the first time since the injury. After practice, UNC coach Roy Williams had said he'd be a gametime decision.

Marshall's being out means that UNC freshman Stilman White will be UNC's starting point guard. The freshman White has played just 168 minutes this season.

That's unfortunate. I'd rather beat them at full strength. Oh well, rock chalk jayhawk baby!

Lance Hobson 7 years, 7 months ago

I agree 100%. That said, I don't feel too sorry for them. They are Carolina and get the best players in the country. This isn't like Ohio losing their point guard.

A guy who broke his wrist a week ago won't play? how is this news.

Matt Kenton 7 years, 7 months ago

Jarod Haas played with a broken wrist. Marshall had surgery six days ago, so bones are set, and it's his weak hand. He practiced yesterday, so playing today was a real possibility, though remote.

Michael Bratisax 7 years, 7 months ago

Agree and disagree..it all depends on the severity of the break. I hold of judgement until more is learned.

I heard one of the talking heads say the doctor did not clear him...more rumor or fact?

Matt Kenton 7 years, 7 months ago

So as far as we knew, playing was at least a possibility and we agree this is news.

He's not even dressed, so it's a done deal. TT and EJ, put on your shoes! Make your threes! Bigs rebound and get back on D! Final Four is yours!

Rock Chalk!!!

Question from reporter to Elijah Johnson yesterday: "Are you preparing for Marshall to play?"

EJ's response: "I'm preparing to play whoever, I'm preparing to play Michael Jordan if he wants to put a Carolina jersey on again... I'm just ready to play, man, doesn't really matter who's on the court... there's gonna be ten people out there and it's gonna be a dogfight regardless. At all times."

LOVE IT! BRING ON THE HEELS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh hell yeah man! love EJ's response. let's go beat them turdheels RCJHK go KU!

The first three games of the tourney have been pretty sketchy for the Hawks. They really need to get some offense, and playing NC might be the cure. Without their PG, turnovers could become a real issue and there's nothing better than runouts for easy layups to wake up a slumping offense.

The wrist injury period is unfortunate, because after the fact whether he played or not it was still going to be an excuse. And that's a pretty valid excuse. I've thought all year Marshall was the best point guard in the country (still love ya Tyshawn!), and during the first weekend of the tournament he'd found yet another gear and his point production exploded. Oh well. Gotta play who's in front of you. Go get 'em guys. Rock Chalk!

Andy Tweedy 7 years, 7 months ago

True, but excuses are just that! How 'bout we lost three guys to the NBA draft for an excuse! A team with 7 McDonald's All-Americans has no excuses in my book!

Kye Clark 7 years, 7 months ago

You're right about the All-Americans thing, but your comparison about us losing 3 guys to the NBA draft isn't really the same thing. Every good team could say that every year, "what if this guy didn't leave?" Losing your star point guard in the NCAA tournament is different. What if we lost Tyshawn? What would we be saying right now?

jayhawkarmy 7 years, 7 months ago

Now if we win the haters and media will bust our balls like they did with Ohio St. cause they didn't play there best player. O well Rock Chalk!

Michael Bratisax 7 years, 7 months ago

I didn't hear once "Ohio St. won but without Melo."

Kansas doesn't put asterisks next to victories.....losers do.....

Mark Lindrud 7 years, 7 months ago

Before we guarantee anything today let's give our A game and win! You play with the hand you are dealt. We can't control what happens with our opponents before the game. Take care of business today Hawks and play like champions....

In a way, all of us has an El Guapo to face. For some, shyness might be their El Guapo. For others, a lack of education might be their El Guapo. For us, El Guapo is a big, dangerous man who wants to kill us. But as sure as my name is Lucky Day, the people of Santa Poco can conquer their own personal El Guapo, who also happens to be the actual El Guapo!

Eliott Reeder 7 years, 7 months ago

IF we win this game today, the pundits can throw out all the excuses they want, we will still be in the Final Four and I will be dancing on Mass Street. A win is a win when it comes to the tournament. IF we win today, we will have a chance to answer those who said we only beat OSU because Sullinger was out. We shall see... but first things first... either way, what a run this year!!!

RJ King 7 years, 7 months ago

Kansas knows all about broken wrists. McLemore, Traylor and Anderson have missed every one of our games this year because of the vicious slap they received on theirs. Time for my bracket to blow to smitherines!

Steve Reigle 7 years, 7 months ago

It will forever taint our win, just like us beating Ohio State without Sullinger.

But, far worse, it's really sad for the young man. I hope is recovery is swift and complete.

Tom Keegan 7 years, 7 months ago

Carolina official just came to the press room to confirm that Marshall will not play or even be in uniform for today's game. Stilman White starting.

Lance Hobson 7 years, 7 months ago

Just spitballing here but I have a feeling our threes will be better today simply since we're not playing so ridiculously late. I know CBS wants ratings, but games ending past midnight in the Elite 8 is unacceptable. We have had three late games this tourney.
