KU softball streak hits 14

— Kansas University softball ran its winning streak to 14 with two victories Friday.

KU beat Charleston Southern, 6-3, and Connecticut, 8-0, in six innings.

Against Charleston Southern (10-7), the Jayhawks took a 6-1 lead into the bottom of the seventh before the Buccaneers rallied.

But Kristin Martinez picked up her first save in relief of Morgan Druhan (5-0).

Ashley Newman led KU offensively, going 4-for-4 with two runs. Rosie Hull was 2-for-3 with a run and two RBIs.

Against UConn, Alicia Pille (6-2) allowed just one hit over the full six innings, with 10 strikeouts.

Newman had three hits and Mariah Montgomery and Lexi Bryant two each for KU.

Montgomery also had two RBIS.

Kansas will face Wisconsin at 8 this morning and play a bracket-round game against a to-be-determined foe later today.

Didn't the softball Jayhawks do this last year ? Started out real hot and then struggled in the big 12 ?

KU is currently 15-2 on the year. The lost their first two games, and have since reeled 15 straight wins including one this morning against Wisconsin and could be 16-2 if they win their second game today. This is probably the best tournament KU is in this year simply because there are a pair of BCS teams in it, but this looks like a very soft non-conference schedule. Last year this team absolutely flopped in Big 12 play by winning just 2 games all season. If they can get close to .500 this year in Big 12 play, that would be good progress and probably get them into the NCAA tournament as well since the Big 12 is an elite conference for softball.

Big 12 will be tough again and I think .500 is asking a lot but with the recruiting class next year I am positive they will be in top half of conference.

The only way this team can compete in the big 12 is to play formidable opponents in the preseason and not a bunch of rec teams to pad their W/L record or resume.. Look back at previous years when KU played teams like Arizona, Stanford, Northwestern, BYU, Cal etc year after year. The previous regime was not afraid of playing good competition to prepare their teams. If we're going to continue to play pushovers, I'm sure Avila or Mid-America Nazarene would play us.
