KU commit Frankamp scores 13 at U17 World Championships

Conner Frankamp, a Wichita North senior-to-be who has committed to play basketball at Kansas University, scored 13 points and dished a team-high five assists as the USA men’s basketball team defeated Australia, 89-67, on Friday at the FIBA U17 World Championship.

Frankamp also had three rebounds, two steals and zero turnovers in 23 minutes for the Americans. He shot 6-for-9 from the field and made his only three-point attempt.

The U.S. will next face the Czech Republic today, Egypt on Sunday and France on Tuesday before closing preliminary play against China on Wednesday.

The top four teams from each group will advance to the medal round with the quarterfinals set to begin on July 6. The semifinals will be played on July 7, with the finals on July 8.

Well done, Mr. Frankamp!

Thanks for the update, WDL. I hope we can get one for each game. Is there a box score to check out?

Man, the more I read these reports, this Frankamp kid is just a scoring savant. Once in a while you find a guy that just has "it". This kid will blow up the Big 12. Cant wait to see him play for ku...

And the 3 rebounds. Shows the kid plays some D and hustles. He will be exciting to watch.

I am so excited about Conner. It is great to see another Redskin doing great and heading toward KU. I believe the last one was Lynette Woodard in '77. I hope Conner continues to have this success. Bring home the gold, kick butt in Wichita City League, and then come and don the Crimson and Blue.

It really does make me wonder who would be the best for KU: Tharpe, Frankamp or Barber?

Unless Adams and/or Doyle is even better than advertised then I think Tharpe will be the natural starter in 2013, but in case he doesn't have enough motivation the competition should help.

Will Frankamp scare off Barber? Do we need both?

Brock 10 months, 3 weeks ago

Frankamp and Barber are not similar: Barber is a blazing-fast, ball-handling, passing PG - who can get into the lane at will and create havoc for defenses - and he is a terrific on-the-ball defender; Frankamp is more of a skilled combo who knows how to use screens and can pour in shots from anyplace.

They can obviously play at the same time. I hope that it happens.

Good insight. Thanks.

I do wonder how Frankamp would play as a SG. He's short so there could be a match-up disadvantage but his stats in High School, AAU and for Team USA show he has many steals with few TOs.

He just seems like a helluva player and I think there's an excellent chance that it will translate at the next level for KU.

Thanks for the update, Geezer. Conner appears to be doing much more than scoring. Another terrific breath of life out of the city of Wichita.

Alohahawk 10 months, 3 weeks ago

Wow! Frankamp had 4 steals. Sounds like he has a decent defensive game, as well as the 11 points he scored.

0

JayDogger 10 months, 3 weeks ago

And zero TOs. His shooting was 5-7 and 1-1 from three. He seems to be getting about as many minutes as the rest of the players.

I hope he keeps up a good game as the teams get better. I imagine France is pretty good, and whomever makes it to their Final 4.

Go Frankamp and Team USA!!!

Here are the cumulative stats:

Conner has the best overall stats.

With Barber down to KU and BAMA I like our chances. I think Grant is doing a good job at recruiting but he is beginning to have a Scott Drew feel, great recruiter but not a very good coach. If self lands Barber to go with Green and Frankecamp this group will be probably one of the best back courts self has ever had. Not to mention he will still have Tharpe, Anrio, white and mclmore if he sticks around. Self is building for years not just next year.

Sound coming from the rest of the Big 12...sigh. Either that, or "screw it...we're going to the SEC."

A while back, Barber listed KU and Alabama as his top two. He has since added Louisville, but has just cut his official list to those three. This, according to a Scout recruiting services article on FoxSports.com. You need to be signed up for their service to get the total story, but when you go to their top 100 list it shows those three as Barber's finalists. According to another article headline (I believe I saw it on ESPN.com, their NCAA BBall page) Louisville is going all out in recruiting Barber.

As for Conner Frankamp, way to go future Jayhawk!!! He did great while playing for the US U16 when they won the gold a year ago. Now, he is continuing his stellar play in the US U17. Although he misses out on the AAU summer circuit, I'd guess this should move him up in the recruiting guru's ranking/pecking order. I think ESPN has him clear down in the 70's. If Barber were to sign on, and with those KU already has in the fold, the backcourt is looking pretty good for the next couple of years.

BigManU 10 months, 3 weeks ago

I can't remember who it was, I believe it was Telep, who just recently gave an explanation about CF and why he was ranked in the 70's and after the start to his summer and everything he has done..............Telep stated that he would still only move him up barely in the 50's

Man, It's amazing to think how young this kid technically is for his class too. He is getting ready or just turned 17 either this previous month or coming up here in July! Wow! If you think about it, he should really only really be a Junior in High School coming up.

Either way, the kid is a stud and he plays with a chip on his shoulder. It's amazing to think he could help KU out right now. CF had a couple of exhibition games or something where he struggled initially, but it looks like he has found his groove with his teammates and I believe is averaging the second or third most minutes on the team.

This kid absolutely stretches the defense while he is on the floor. If you're an Elite post player or PG....................coming to Kansas over the next 3 to 4 years.............CF is going to turn you into a Lottery Pick because of all the extra space that kid creates.

You have some serious Frankamp love going on. I will not get between you. But it may be wise to step back, take a deep breath, and play the field for a while. You're not ready to get married yet. You have a lot of oats to sew.

0

bad_dog 10 months, 3 weeks ago

You have some serious "Debbie Downer" pessimism going on. I will not waste time trying to dissuade you. But it may be wise to step back, take a deep breath and recognize your opinion is no greater than another fan's no matter how high or elite you believe it to be. Your Pavlovian responses to other's optimism are redundant, tiresome, unnecessary and somewhat arrogant.

1

HighEliteMajor 10 months, 3 weeks ago

I don't quite see how my response to someone -- Shaw (BigManU) -- that I've had many exchanges with over the years is pessimism. I said nothing negative or pessimistic.

I'll bite, however. Realism and pessimism are two different things. I clearly have issues with folks that just say irrational positive crap. BigManU isn't one of them. I don't think my opinion is of more value than anyone else. However, when folks the spew positive propaganda .. see the Doyle orgasms .. or negative .. I tend to focus on the fact that there is no logic or argument, just cheerleading. But I await logical arguments to refute my positions. I am more than open to changing my opinion.

So while folks like you, apparently, prefer to simply cheer on any event with a positive outlook, adjusting your cheerleading skirt to address any event, some actually view events with a critical eye and attempt to analyze what's occurred. It is much easier and politically correct to hail the arrival of any recruit as coup, or diamond in the rough, or whatever, than to be realistic based on facts.. Others, like you, simply attack the messenger without addressing the argument. Easier for a simple mind.

Ok, let's assume I don't share the view that Frankamp will ever be a starter, and that I don't buy what BigManU was sellin' .. tell me why I'm wrong. Or stick to your canned reply and go about your day, devoid of thought.

0

bad_dog 10 months, 3 weeks ago

Canned reply? Overreach much?

Attack the messenger? That's hilarious coming from you Captain Knee Jerk.

I have never implied or stated Frankamp will or won't be a starter at Kansas. I do believe he's a damn good player but I challenge you to point out even a single comment of mine where I've fawned over a recruit or indulged in hyperbolic "rah, rah". Any recruit. You won't find it.

This is not merely about the single comment directed to Shaw above. What I am saying is I for one (and I suspect numerous others) am tired of seeing your posts repeatedly ridiculing opinions and speculation from others. You apparently feel obligated to play the role of wet blanket (aka "the critical eyed omnipotent realist") whenever you disagree with another fan's perception of a player. So what? Let it go. Get over it and yourself. Try some tact rather than condescension for once if you must opine on the comments of others or expect similar responses.

I hope that's not too devoid of thought for you.

0

HighEliteMajor 10 months, 2 weeks ago

Yea, I looked at your comments. Nothing of substance .. like 7 since May 8. You spent more time on me than anything else in the past three months. I guess I'm flattered.

So what do you prefer .. cheerleading or critiquing? And what is again obvious is that you ignore refuting any position with logic or facts. I am always interested to know if my view of realism is wrong. Much like the Doyle deal. There is nothing logical that suggests Doyle becomes a substantive contributor. No precedent. Nothing. The facts just point the other way .. but I'm a Debbie Downer because I don't simply join the cheers. Uh, no thanks. And while I could just scan by and not offer my opinion, I kind of thought that's what this is all about.

Perhaps you could offer a substantive opinion. I am interested now.

And while I could wrap my opinions in buttercups and rose petals to make you feel better, I won't. I asume we're dealing with (mostly) men here. If someone tells me they're a lady, I will certainly be more tactful. If you would like to be treated like a lady, tell me. When you have something of substance to say, though, let us all know.

0

bad_dog 10 months, 2 weeks ago

Yes, "like 7 since May 8". Unlike your perpetual need to vebally void, I like to do things other than park online, continuously patting myself on the back with one hand while smacking fellow Hawk fans with the other.

If you bothered to understand the basis for my comments as well as the content you might begin to grasp that it's the tone of your message, not necessarily the message itself. I don't have a problem with critical analysis. I do have a problem with your incessant need to deliver the message in a derisive and mocking manner. Therefore, you are a Debbie Downer because you are a jackwagon in delivery style, not necessarily the content of the load itself. No need for buttercups or rose petals here; just a little more respect in your candor. You believe you are cute. I don't. It's that simple. Again, get over yourself. Call it step one in your much needed self-assessment.

Alohahawk I thought it was three schools as well with Louisville but yesterday rivals jayhawk slant interviewed him and he told them it was between KU and BAMA. Of course you know that at anytime he could add seven more schools to it. Either way I hope we land him.

Tharpe, Frankamp, McLemore, Adams, Doyle. How can there be room for Barber? Furthermore, with McLemore, Adams and Doyle here for three of Barber's seasons, Tharpe for two, and Frankamp for four, we seem to be set at guard for years to come. Not to mention that White may play some 2. We shouldn't even recruit the spots for a while, should we?

But .. as we know .. better players will come in and displace lesser players.

But .. as we know .. some players may leave (uh, of their own accord, of course).

Barber comes to KU, he likely starts his freshman season. He's the number 13 player in the nation. There is a significant difference between that caliber of player and every player we would have competing with him to run the point. We can hype Frankamp, or whoever the developmental flavor of the day is, but a player like Barber is a near immediate starter (likely much like Chalmers was .. once he dispatched Mr. Hawkins). EJ might be the other side of that coin.

Unfortunately .. as we know .. many top guys don't even want the risk that they may not start. Perhaps this might be the type of player to offer some sort of guarantee (of playing time, not weed).

But it may all be unnecessary. As I recall, Adams is supposed to be on campus tomorrow, right? July 1? The next Dwayne Wade, according to his coach. His coach also said he should be starting at the point this season. And with the credence given to the words of high school coaches lately, we should all be in for an immediate treat. No need for Barber.

Can't wait for this young man to step on campus, I hope he can be just as good if not better than one of my all time favorite hawks Tyrel Reed. With him ballin at the U17 Worlds maybe he will have an influence on Jabari Parker's decision, probably a pipe dream but just a thought.

HEM, no guarantee on McLemore being around more than a year. He's showing up as a top prospect (top 10) for the 2013 draft so he may very well be gone after this year if he lives up to his potential this year.

I agree .. I believe you missed my point.

I could see Connor becoming a 5 star prospect when the next rankings come out. Not saying that is a big deal to me or anyone else here, but I'm sure he doesn't mind being known as one of the best recruits in his class.

0

phogphan2000 10 months, 3 weeks ago

I wouldn't have a lot to help determine how talented Conner is other than recruiting sites if not for the way he's playing for the USA team. Doing a great job of representing the US and the state of Kansas.
