KU track stars Dixon, Geubelle advance to finals of Olympic trials

Kansas University track athletes Andrea Geubelle, left, and Diamond Dixon advanced to the finals of the U.S. Olympic team trials on Saturday, June 23, in Eugene, Ore. Geubelle finished fourth in the triple jump, while Dixon took third in her heat of the 400 meters.

? Kansas University’s Andrea Geubelle and Diamond Dixon advanced to the U.S. Olympic team trial finals, Saturday at Hayward Field.

Geubelle finished fourth in the triple jump to qualify for Monday’s final. Dixon finished third in her semifinal heat of the 400 meters to earn a spot in today’s final.

Geubelle, a KU junior, lept to a mark of 13.52 meters on her first attempt, putting her in first place. After fouling on her final two attempts, Geubelle dropped three spots to fourth.

Dixon, a KU sophomore, ran a time of 51.58, the sixth-best 400 mark.

Dixon is slated to run today at 6:35 p.m. A top-three finish will clinch a spot in the Olympic 400-meter race, while a top-six finish could give her a spot on the Olympic 4×400-meter relay team.

Fellow Jayhawks Mason Finley (discus) and Rebeka Stowe (3,000-meter steeplechase) will begin their qualifying rounds Monday.
