Fans chirping over what could be last KU-Mizzou basketball game in Columbia

As Kansas University and the University of Missouri are ready to meet on the basketball court for what could be one of the last times, the game came with the usual amount of sniping.

The Missouri Alumni Association held a contest where fans could win tickets to Saturday night’s game against “kU,” as they referred to it, by entering and listing “three reasons why I’m not a Jayhawk.”

More than 2,700 people participated in the contest. Jack E. Kinney Jr., a 1969 journalism alumnus of the school, won.

His reasons? His late uncle Bob said the best school for a Missourian is MU, and Tigers are better than “some goofy bird.”

Other submitted reasons will be posted online later.

“(Former Missouri basketball coach) Norm Stewart would not let his teams eat or sleep in Kansas. Whatever Stormin’ Norman says is good enough for me,” Kinney wrote.

Todd McCubbin, executive director of the MU Alumni Association, said the contest could “definitely can slip into some not fun areas if we’re not careful.”

The association is also using the week to boost membership, pointing out that it has the fourth-highest members in the conference, trailing KU.

“I think it’s fair game and we have some fun with it,” McCubbin said of the rivalry. “It has driven some membership, there’s no doubt, this week.”

Kevin Corbett, president of the KU Alumni Association, said this kind of tactic is nothing new.

“It’s at least the third campaign they’ve run to try and recruit more members than the KU Alumni Association,” he said.

It hasn’t worked so far, he pointed out.

But it wasn’t all sniping this week.

Xavier Billingsley, president of the Missouri Students Association, distributed a letter to the university community asking fans to avoid committing “some act of ignorance against our opponents.”

“Keep your eyes and ears open this week,” he wrote. “And if you see an example of insensitive fan behavior or encounter words or actions unbefitting Mizzou, make sure the students behind that ignorance know you don’t appreciate it.”

  1. I don't like Oranges.
  2. Final Fours are overrated.
  3. Not too keen on KU's trophy case. It just looks too "busy".

Now gimme my game tickets!

justinryman 6 years, 3 months ago

Three reasons I'm not a Tiger:

1) I value my education.

2) My family tree has a lot of branches on it.

3) I like to win, but when I lose I do not run away so I don't have to face the one that keeps beating me down(171-94).

Joe Joseph 6 years, 3 months ago

I imagine Billingsley is referring to the internet rumor of the "No Mom Tom" shirts.

I think that would take the classlessness that is Missouri to a whole new level.

LAJayhawk 6 years, 3 months ago

Wow.... I mean.... wow.

Just............ wow.

rockchalk_dpu 6 years, 3 months ago

Not to mention their plane-crash jokes directed at OK State after their loss in Stillwater. This year we have seen them take it to a whole new low (if that was possible) as far as pure disrespect and hate toward their opponents. I can say I'm not sorry to see them go after the last 2 years of them being the bitchy little kid at the table acting out, and them trying to pass the end of the rivalry off as our fault is just ridiculous. I am worried about tomorrow, but I hope we just spank them.

John Myers 6 years, 3 months ago

Wait, so that's the BEST entry in their contest? And he listed two reasons in a contest where you list your top three? Or was "What Norm said" his third? That's pretty sad. Expected, but sad.

onceinawhile 6 years, 3 months ago

This headline is pretty misleading, no? Mizzou is scheduled to play KU in Lawrence at the end of the month. So this weekend's game definitely won't be the last game between the two.

actorman 6 years, 3 months ago

Yeah, definitely not one of the more brilliant headlines.

Thad Daugherty 6 years, 3 months ago

It does say in Columbia. I'm just sayin'. ;-)

onceinawhile 6 years, 3 months ago

Yes, looks like they added that after the fact.

actorman 6 years, 3 months ago

Yeah, it didn't say Columbia originally, just that it was the last one. That's what onceinawhile and I were referring to.

"Three Reasons Why MU Fans Are Not Jayhawks"

  1. Literacy requirement at KU.

  2. Not enough meth labs in Kansas.

  3. Can't stand winning.

Where' my ticket?

sloppyscience 6 years, 3 months ago

I believe it will eventually be discovered that Quantrill didn't actually burn Lawrence to the ground on purpose. But rather, he and his Missouri buddies were partying here when their portable meth lab blew up, engulfing the entire city. When asked what happened, they had no choice but to say 'we did it fer the south!'

Ryan Mullen 6 years, 3 months ago

Why is this comment not getting more cred. Maybe the funniest thing I have ever read in my entire life!!!!

sloppyscience 6 years, 3 months ago

Is it possible Kansas fans have a soft spot for portable meth labs?

jaybate 6 years, 3 months ago

Online Editors,

"Fans chirping over what could be..." is an awful headline.

This is a big game, one of a few crucial ones in KU's hunt for a conference title.

It is a joyous game, because we never have to play these gene damaged cretins again.

It is the end of the longest rivalry in basketball, or one of the longest.

It is a confrontation of good (KU) with evil (MU).

It is a defense of the holy grail of college basketball against basketball barbarians.

It is many things.

And "chirping" describes none of the realities, nor feelings, associated with this event.

Please change it, since it is so easy to do in the digital age.

The top three reasons why they didn't go to KU:

  1. In jail
  2. Didn't graduate high school
  3. Hooked on meth

MU can't even tell the truth from fiction.

  3. Meth heads grinding their teeth distract me at basketball games.

  4. Just not stupid enough to fit in comfortably in Columbia.

rob4lb 6 years, 3 months ago

I will get trashed for saying this, but the rivalry does not have to end. MU wants to continue it in both football and basketball. Comments about discontinuing the rivalry by the KU coaches,AD and the chancellor embarrassed me as a long time member of the KU Alumni Association. We came across as extremely self-absorbed. MU's leaving the Big 12 had nothing to do with KU, but our comments tried to make it about us which made the rest of the country laugh. We all know that if the roles were reversed and we had a chance to move to one of the three stable conferences, we most likely would have done the same thing MU did. I know there are many people on this board who drink the crimson kool-aid and as a result, cannot look at this objectively.

bayareajhawk 6 years, 3 months ago

I respectfully disagree. I don't think we came across nearly as self-absorbed as Mizzou. After all, they are the ones leaving 100+ years of association over money. And I would hope that KU wouldn't have left the conference if they'd had an opportunity. I haven't given up on the Big XII yet. It's a shame that Mizzou did, but if they want to to lose in Gainesville instead of Stillwater that's up to them. By leaving, they struck a serious blow to the fortunes of KU, KSU, ISU, and Baylor. I don't think that's something we should ignore and pretend didn't happen while we fall all over ourselves trying to sign them up for some non-conference games.

Dan Pawlowski 6 years, 3 months ago

I disagree. We don't need them and our coaches and players could get some uninterrupted sleep. No phone calls from those lame antlers would be a good thing.

haps 6 years, 3 months ago

Agree with a lot of what you say, but your kidding yourself if you don't see the importance of having a nationally recognized rivalry. If MU continues to improve, then having 2 top 10 games helps on a number of fronts. Look at this weekend's game; the game is the ESPN game of the day so for an entire day KU will be talked about and talked up. That is a hell of a recruiting tool. Do we get this coverage if we play OSU or OU or UT? No.

You may not care about UNC/Duke, but it's a financial boon for both schools and is a game that is easy to sell to high school kids. Kansas, due to its geography, needs all the national press it can get.

Marcia Parsons 6 years, 3 months ago

Of course we did--we got that kind of all-day coverage against Texas on the two or three times we were the GameDay game with them. It's GameDay that creates the publicity, wheverer they are. MU is just lucky that they have a good team this year so their game with us actually could mean something. Besides, it took the national news about 100 years to figure out that we even had a rivalry with MU (they went for the Civil War angle), so I don't think we'll take much of a hit for dropping it. How many times did you see KUvsMU on any of ESPN's "Rivalry Week" games, either football or basketball?

Alan Braun 6 years, 3 months ago

I both agree and disagree, depending on the sport. In football, we would be insane to play them anymore. Why give up a potentially easy win during the nonconference schedule, only to replace it with a more-than-likely loss? Especially when that one additional loss could mean bowl vs no-bowl, or semi-decent bowl vs crummy bowl? In basketball, OTOH, that's not a factor, and playing them would rev up our non-conference strength of schedule (not that we would've needed it this year when both KenPom and Sagarin rate our SOS as #2 in all of division 1!) So my vote would be to continue playing the slavers 1 game a year in basketball but tell them to go jump into their septic tanks in football.

Thad Daugherty 6 years, 3 months ago

Haith is going to be a one hit wonder. He has what 7 seniors on the roster? Let's see what he does next year with less talent and leadership.

Katie Bieber 6 years, 3 months ago

When the Big XII was near collapse, the only bargaining leverage KU had was the rivalry. It was made known to MU that should they leave the conference, they would not be playing KU any longer. MU called us on a bluff and, should we ever play again, that's exactly what it will have been. MU saw an opportunity to bolt to a more stable conference and, in the process, threw KU, KSU, and Iowa St under the bus. They can spin whatever they want out of it, but we should not reward them for taking the only life raft from a sinking ship, while leaving the rest of us to bail water and, eventually patch the hull. We can find more reliable, trustworthy, and honest members to fill their spot, who actually appreciate the Big XII and all its members. Buh-bye.

rhollinshed 6 years, 3 months ago

I disagree. Ku chancellor and administration said and did everything correct. It made me feel good as a member of ku alumni association. You and man are no ku graduates......get off our boards. Trolls

rob4lb 6 years, 3 months ago

You don't know me, but I can assure you that I am an active member of the Alumni Association and am entitled to my opinion. You need to stop the personal attacks.

Matt Bowers 6 years, 3 months ago

I think we look like we got left at the alter when we talk about it and hopefully a home and away will be played on yearly basis. I don't see anyone feeling that face would be lost. They did the wrong thing by leaving, but we can still make the situation doable. We should probably start a facebook page about the rivalry to get the word out...just saying.

Rock Chalk

cojayhawk99 6 years, 3 months ago

The rivalry is done thanks to MU. I would not care about a KU-MU game that is non conference. It will mean absolutely nothing. Good for MU for switching conferences; for KU, the only two conferences that make any sense for them is Big 12 or Big 10. As long as other major conferences survive so will the Big 12. MU can go on the SEC and win or lose, I don't care. See ya. The rivalry only exists because of the conference.

For football, it isn't like MU is a Florida or Notre Dame that brings instant cred with it; most years the nation would not care so win or lose it wouldn't matter. Might as well schedule either an easy non-con game or a game that would get national exposure. MU barely made a bowl this year, they've had a good run the past decade but nationally, nobody cares.

If KU plays MU in basketball, they should only do it if they only play in AFH otherwise they lose money. No neutral site, no playing in Columbia. MU is simply not a good enough program to make it worthwhile for basketball money-wise.

Honestly, this was/is a terrible rivalry. KU-KSU or KU-Texas could both be more meaningful rivalries than this turd.

Hank Cross 6 years, 3 months ago

Agree with the part that if we had the choice to go to the P12 or B1G we'd be gone quicker than you can say, 'I'm a Jay- Jay- ..." So I don't blame Mizery. OTOH I'd only continue the rivalry if it benefitted KU and it's hard to see how it would do so now. As MU becomes more SECentric, KC will become almost entirely KU's market. Why let MU back in? Make it clear to KC recruits that if they go to MU, 1/2 their games will be in places like Gainesville and Athens.

bradynsdad 6 years, 3 months ago

Had to get in on the reasons not to attend ku.

1) I think my cousin is extremely attractive and people in Lawrence frown on that. 2) anyone can win big 12 titles and national titles, it takes heart to lose them all. 3) I believe the union has infiltrated the big twelve so were better off down in the confediracy.

Brett Arnberger 6 years, 3 months ago

Three reasons I don't attend Mucking Fizzou:

  1. I like my family tree to have branches.

  2. I can't pull off the Cutoff-Frayed-Jean-Shorts look.

  3. I can't produce a horrible, frat boy "rap" video.

Dan Pawlowski 6 years, 3 months ago

I disagree. That is hilarious. Thanks for the link.

Benjamin Piehler 6 years, 3 months ago

Actually no, pretty sure it was for real... its been re-branded a joke by Mizzou fans after being laughed at for a week.

Benjamin Piehler 6 years, 3 months ago

You do know during filming there isnt actually any sound... right? So those freshman are standing there dancing to a boom box at best, trying to act like theyre in a big budget rap video... of course they cant keep a strait face. You wouldnt either.

Secondly, and this probably wont mean anything to you; my best friend's little brother is in a frat in Columbia.. they're mortified by that video. Hence the "You sure we won't be embarrassed by this in two days" comment on the KU rebuttal.

You havent provided any evidence except some conjecture regarding facial expressions.

Benjamin Piehler 6 years, 3 months ago

Ill let you think on it haha... not terribly complex. Sometimes people smile or blush in awkward situations, such as lip syncing or dancing to no music for a fake rap video...

Of course, I should have known this would have confused you; you actually have to leave your mom's basement to get into a social situation to discover this revelation...

Still waiting on an actual reason it's "real".

rhollinshed 6 years, 3 months ago

Muck really suck. Post on tulanes message boards or mizzou.

rwhawk 6 years, 3 months ago

Maybe you are both right.

It may have been meant a joke as a purposeful slam to KU this week (along with hyping their own team).

But I think they also think its pretty cool, which makes it serious. I bet those 3 boys won't be acting like its a "joke" tomorrow when they are performing for Gameday.

Mike Payne 6 years, 3 months ago

That video is about the dance "the bernie" from the classic hit Weekend at Bernies 2- it tried to be the next dougie.

milwaukeeJAYHAWK 6 years, 3 months ago really don't understand what parody actually is, do you? The Mizzou video had not one single trace of satire, or a wink to the audience letting them in on the joke.

The video is an earnest attempt to be cool, it backfired, so they called it parody and disabled the comments because of the negative reaction and embarrassment.

milwaukeeJAYHAWK 6 years, 3 months ago

it's not a joke either. it's serious.

haps 6 years, 3 months ago

Why I like MU over KU:

  1. I don't like exclusivity and prefer honoring anyone, like honoring the cheating heiresses who didn't attend MU (it will always be The Paige to me), or Truman the Tiger named after Harry Truman who also did not attend MU. Anyone can name things after famous alumni like Phog Allen or James Naismith...well...if they have bada$$ famous alumni.

  2. I can't count so MU's lack of final 4s, national championships, etc. is the perfect number for me.

  3. I also don't understand geography, which is why I'm so excited to be a part of the East division in the SEC!

Dan Pawlowski 6 years, 3 months ago

That response was uncalled for. Stereotyping is the last resort of a small mind.

Jeff Coffman 6 years, 3 months ago

I agree. I've come to terms with terms that they can't write out "The University of Kansas." However, I think it is so disrespectful and inappropriate to do the opposite with the other school, not too mention in the same sentence.

LJW this really is not correct and this one you should be embarrassed about.

FSUJHAWK 6 years, 3 months ago

I am with you on this. After reading Tiatt's response a few weeks ago, I went back and re-read several older articles and noticed that this media house continuously refer to the "higher ups" and others as the "University of Texas" etc, which are obviously correct. To have this local media house refer to Ole KU inappropriately while referring to said university's arch-nemis correctly in the same sentence is totally unacceptable!

One of my ancestors was killed during Quantrills raid and they tried to kill another one (Samuel a. Riggs), but Samuel's wife grabbed the reins of the horse so the meth head couldn't get a good shot at him. So, I take it personal when they brag about killing our men and young boys. I won't miss Misery when they go to the SEC. Their fans are the absolute worst.

I don't care if we ever play them again. Good Riddance.

kellerman411 6 years, 3 months ago

Yes, me too.

1) Distribution of a Methamphetamine is a felony in Kansas.

2) Kansas does not allow marriage between siblings.

3) I enjoy finding colorful reasons to justify our team's losses, this isn't possible as a Jayhawk.

Tiger fans, you got Kansas coming to town. Not Texas, not K-State, Kansas. It's time you get reminded just why you are running away to another conference. Let's go get these sorry @ss bastards.

"His reasons? His late uncle Bob said the best school for a Missourian is MU, and Tigers are better than 'some goofy bird.'"

On the evening of 8.1st Clemons placed a phone call from County Jail to the home of Asst. A D. Stewart’s wife, Amy, answered the phone. She said some guests, incldg the MU pres. wife, were coming for dinner. Former player Clemons expressed bitterness toward Coach Snyder in recorded jail phone tapes.. The depositions in Clemons’ assault case hit the media, & MU Coach Snyder & Odom were publicly accused of giving Clemons improper cash. "We’re celebrating," Amy told Clemons. "Celebrating your little ass because it’s all out."
"You’re going to take them down. You know that, right?" Amy Stewart told Clemons.
Clemons laughed. "I’m taking great pleasure," Amy Stewart said. "You’re taking them down." President Elson Floyd is said to be furious with A D M. Alden for revoking Clemons’ scholarship. The coaches are ridiculed for desperately trying to get Clemons out of town before he reveals the program’s NCAA violations. Meanwhile, Clemons refuses Odom’s jailhouse visit & spends much of his free time on the phone with a pair of unlikely confidants, Amy & C Floyd. According to jail conversations, the MU A dept. is one big dysfunctional family. Carmento Floyd said her husband’s displeasure with Alden stemmed from Alden’s decision to yank Clemons’ scholarship after he wrecked an all-terrain vehicle while at a gathering at the Floyds’.
In the recordings, Amy Stewart related a story, which she attributed to her husband, about the atmosphere at the Hearnes Center at the time. "Ed come home, every time he come home, he be like, ‘Them crackers shaking. They going crazy. They don’t know what to do. They can’t talk to Ricky. They’re like some crackheads running around there,’ " Amy said. "Well, good enough for them," Carmento Floyd replied. Clemons also said he was angry because the reason he lost his scholarship - breaking the terms of his probation by leaving his halfway house to go to the Floyds’ home - was Odom’s idea. Clemons said he rode to the party with an athletic department employee named Sue, whom he called "the study lady." Clemons’ attitude toward Snyder varied throughout his jail stay. In early discussions said he didn’t want to reveal the basketball program’s dirty laundry to the media because Snyder. To illustrate Snyder’s loyalty to him, Clemons related a story to Rawlinson that Snyder had threatened to quit when Alden raised the possibility of revoking Clemons’ scholarship after his first arrest. "Quin, like, he got faith in me, he believe in me, " Clemons said. "But it’s only because he think I’m gonna say something, you know what I mean, about the money," Clemons said, referring to the cash he says he got from coaches. Snyder met with a Tribune reporter yesterday but repeatedly declined to comment: "As tough as it is for me personally not to respond, and for my coaches not to respond, I cannot discuss these allegations."

when does life begin?

My priest says at conception.

My pastor says at birth. | My rabbi says when MU leaves the conference don't let the door hit you on the way out.

Rumors say that ATM was out, MU still contemplating whether to stay or go and whispered that if they depart they would stay one more year to take legal pressure off WVA and fullfill the contract. Then went back on their word, putting this fall schedules and West V. in a bind with BEast. Lots of departure animosity unlike with ATM.

Are you all aware that you are acting just like the "classless" Mizzou fans? It's pretty pathetic that some of you can't seem to spell "MU." Typical KU trash talk because it's all you got. We own you in football and for the time being, basketball. Also, it is KU's choice to end the rivalry. You aren't good enough for us in football and that's part of the reason we left. We talk trash because you all act like everyone in the college basketball world should bow down and forfeit. Stop being crybabies.
