Former Kansas University track distance thrower Mason Finley has transferred to the University of Wyoming for his senior season, the Wyoming athletic department has announced.
Finley, an eight-time All-American who is a four-time NCAA runner-up in the shot and discus and four-time Big 12 champion, will compete indoors in 2013 and red-shirt the outdoor season, then have one full season in 2014.
The Salida, Colo., native’s dad, Jared, was an All-America discus thrower at Wyoming in 1979.
“We are obviously thrilled to have Mason join our team, not only for his tremendous talent level but also because he is a great young man with the highest moral character,” Wyoming associate head track and field coach Paul Barrett said. “He has incredible potential as one of the best young talents in the country, so we will work together to help him achieve his goals of winning NCAA titles and making world and Olympic teams in the future.”
His current personal records are 67-11 1/4 in the shot put and 201-5 in the discus.

What's the real story behind the transfer?
Wyoming is not a good location for a thrower, at least weather-wise.

It is closer to home, just kind of strange that Wy announced it before KU. Maybe we'll see him at the Kansas Relays in the future.

There is nothing like a good news story, that gives us lots of questions, but no answers.
Why was he leaving? Was this a surprise? It sounds like there are some family ties.
Are they getting rid of the track, so track and field is going away and they have to find a new loction?

I guess if you throw the shot and the discus and compete indoor and outdoor, you can be an All-American eight times....wait a minute... he already is an AA eight times....isn't his eligibility used up or is he throwing the hammer and javelin also.
LJW..would a little more info on this killed ya????

As a former college track athlete let me try to explain this. Essentially, at the collegiate track level to become an all-american you have to finish in the top 6-8 (depending on level) at the national championships in any single event. If you finish in the top 6 in two single events then it counts as two all american honors as they are seperate events. Also Indoor and Outdoor do count as two entirely different seasons/sports (trust me they are) thus he could have obtained three all-american classifications a year (discus is not an indoor event) meaning that he likely finished in the top 6-8 in both discus and shot outdoors one season and shot indoors that same year. And I believe the article is wrong because according to KU Athletics site on his bio he should only have 6 all-american titles, which, may be where the confusion is at.

Mason threw 236 ft. in high school - unbelievable. He has thrown 201 in college (with a heavier discus).
My hunch is he is leaving KU because of inadequate progress.
College throwers should approach their high school level if they are progressing adequately. He is not even close. His first year at KU he should have been well over 200 and proceeded from there. Something has gone wrong. He and his dad have decided a change is needed. Simple as that.
By his age in college I threw 202'5 with a 198'11" high school throw. And I was about half the talent (and size/strength) of Finley. If he wants to progress to Olympic team level...something has to change. Unfortunately for us, he decided it was his school.
I am a fan, Mason! Best wishes!

Should there be more of discussion after this line:
"The Salida, Colo., native’s dad, Jared, was an All-America discus thrower at Wyoming in 1979."
??? Sure it sucks but there's enough dots to connect here to make it a sort-of sad but unambiguous story.
