T-Rob selects representation

Former Kansas University basketball forward Thomas Robinson will be represented by Rival Sports Group of Beverly Hills, Calif., the organization announced Wednesday. Agent Tony Dutt, who also represents former KU players Marcus and Markieff Morris, will be handling Robinson’s NBA contract.

“Coach Self and the entire coaching staff along with Kansas University have done an excellent job in making Thomas the most NBA ready player in the draft and we are excited to be a big part of this process,” said Jason Martin, Rival co-founder.

“He is a great talent and an even better person,” said Richard Gebbia, CEO of Rival Sports Group.

Robinson is expected to be a top-five pick in the June 28 draft.

I'm sure there are some snappy quotes from Jerry Maguire, but I haven't seen it in years. Of course, the iconic one is "Show me the money!".

If only there was somebody who posts comments here who could compose a list of relevant quotes, etc. Anybody know who that could be?

I'd be happy to do it - but: You can't handle the truth !!

Sorry mem - I just thought you were looking for quotes, I didn't read closely enough !!

Hopefully this will bail me out -

I am really happy to see T-rob finish out this season injury free. Jayhawk nation would be crushed if he busted a knee this season. Good luck in the NBA! Go dominate those boards.

Someone help me understand why NBA rookies need an agent. Aren't the contracts set based on where you are drafted? Is there still some negotiation? (Length of contract?) Perhaps to help secure endorsement deals? I'm just wondering why pay someone 4-10% of several million dollars when the pay scale is set already.

0

Kyle Rohde 1 year ago

Was wondering the same thing.

0

memhawk 1 year ago

Wasn't there some issue with Xavier Henry and the Grizzlies? I believe he was being jacked around and his agent was able to reslove issues and protect him from potential legal risks after the fact. This is just one example. Agents are not revered as being very high on the integrity food chain, but they are necessary. Ironically, Henry was not with the Grizzlies for long and he probably was truly happy he did have an agent to negotiate the potential that became a reality when he did leave.

0

KUastrofunk 1 year ago

If I remember correctly, rookies are guaranteed a salary range not an exact figure. It's standard practice for teams to give the maximum amount but the Grizzlies were trying to give X the minimum.

0

txrockchalk 1 year ago

I imagine agents can lobby NBA teams to take their client as high as possible in the draft, presenting them with reasons why, and thus securing a higher $ amount on their contract. Also, there are no set contracts if you aren't a lottery pick, and no guarantee of a contract at all if you aren't selected in the first round. The agent could negotiate the amount of the contract if outside of the lottery, as well as secure and negotiate a contract if their client is taken in the second round or becomes a free agent (not selected at all).

0

marchphog88 1 year ago

Also worth mentioning is the fact that there is no guarantee as to draft position, and an agent is a good thing to have for those 1st-rd caliber talent guys who slip to the second round.

(cough cough - Mario Chalmers, Josh Selby - cough)

0

txrockchalk 1 year ago

I also seem to recall some fans and observers indicating Darrell Arthur's selection position (27th overall) would have been significantly higher had his agent quickly quashed rumors about him having health issues weeks prior to the draft.

0

bayareajhawk 1 year ago

I was just going to say that. Arthur had family members looking after his affairs and they did not handle that situation as they should have. He lost a lot of money due to rumors that went unchecked.

0

JayDocMD 1 year ago

Thanks - all the above are good points. Still think I would consider not hiring an agent as a rookie if I was lottery material. Seems that you could always hire a lawyer/agent if a contract issue arose. Sadly, I'm European D-league talent at best, so I'll never have that problem...

0

stockhawk 1 year ago

I imagine it's also helpful (necessary?) for negotiating endorsement contracts and the like.

0

jhawkrulz 1 year ago

It isn't that clear cut. For instance, the teams can given up to 110% of a certain amount, and certain teams (like Xavier's a couple of years ago), was trying to make them earn the 10% extra based on certain performance criteria. Now I am all for performance criteria; however, if I can get it guaranteed I will. In addition, the first two years are guaranteed for the first round and I think the first 14 are guaranteed for two years, so ironically, the second round need the agents more then the first round.

Also it really isn't about the NBA contract as there is probably more to be made off of endorsements and they help get those settled as well.

0

dylans 1 year ago

I don't think Thomas majored in contractual law, but it wouldn't matter anyways there are no 3 year law programs. The agent is there to protect you and get you the most money. A 21 year old doesn't realize all the potential pitfalls.

0

KGphoto 1 year ago

Lol. C'mon. You knew those. Those are gimme's for any movie buff. I've seen all those movies like 5 times, at least. Except Citizen Kane, once was enough.

Not positive about the John Wayne one though. I feel like he probably said that in more than one, and the actress who said "I'll have what she's having", I just DID look up. I think It's Estelle Reiner. Rob Reiner's wife. So yeah, Google is great. Also Googled Robert Castellano who played Pete Clemenza. "...take the canolis".

Oakville, what movie was the John Wayne quote?

0

txrockchalk 1 year ago

You are definitely a movie buff in that case! Did you ever see that Excel spreadsheet that went around about seven or eight years ago where it showed a still from each of 50 different movies or so, and you had to name the movie? Also, I believe the images had the bodies of the actors digitally removed so you only saw their clothes in the scene. If you tried it out, I bet you did pretty well.

0

You lose...the random customer was Estelle Reiner, the Movie Director Rob Reiner's mother.

I hope T-Rob gets as big of contract as anyone to ever come out of KU.

0

He probably will, as he's likely to be the highest KU draft choice since Danny Manning, and contracts just weren't as big 35 years ago.

T-Robb likely in that range, but for more $ ten years later.

0

Good memory. I forgot they both went that high.

I thought Paul would have been the next highest, and I remember him going 7th, I think.

0

BayHawkaholic 1 year ago

I think Raef and Paul were projected to go around 5-7, but Pierce ended up a steal for the Celtics at #10. Other than Olowokandi a bust, '98 was an exceptional top ten!

1 Michael Olowokandi (C) Clippers - Pacific (Sr.) 2 Mike Bibby (PG) Vancouver Grizzlies - Arizona (So.) 3 Raef LaFrentz (C/F) Nuggets - Kansas (Sr.) 4 Antawn Jamison (F) Raptors - North Carolina (Jr.) 5 Vince Carter (G/F) Golden State Warriors - North Carolina (Jr.) 6 Robert Traylor (F/C) Mavericks - Michigan (Jr.) 7 Jason Williams (PG) Sacramento Kings - Florida (Jr.) 8 Larry Hughes (SG) 76ers - Saint Louis (Fr.) 9 Dirk Nowitzki (PF) Milwaukee Bucks (traded to Dallas) 10 Paul Pierce (G/F) Boston Celtics - Kansas (Jr.)

0

jhawk7782 1 year ago

I don't see him beating Raef LaFrentz...

0

jhawkrulz 1 year ago

Well...not so fast. 1) I'm guessing that Paul Pierce's is bigger. 2) I know that Nick Collison's will have been bigger.

If you are talking rookie contracts, I'd actually be surprised. See the NBA went through a rookie and salary cap adjustment. So I would imagine that Xavier Henry's and Cole Aldrich's contracts both probably had higher dollar contracts and might have been guaranteed more.

I don't know for sure, but it seemed like they rolled the overall contract amount back $400MM across the board.

Since people are into trivia lists today, who are Rival Sports Group's rivals?

(Note: I don't know the answer.)

And why did they select the name "Rival"?

When I first read Self's comment about NBA ready I thought of the big dude from Kentucky. But per usual Self is right. That big dude from Kentucky will get pushed, shoved, elbowed, and knocked around a lot more that TR and a lot easier.

0

jhawk7782 1 year ago

I'm guessing you're talking about Anthony Davis in which case I would have to disagree based upon their head-to-head performances.

0

jhawkrulz 1 year ago

Did he even score against Withey?

Head-to-Head isn't really a fair comparison, they play two separate positions. Anthony Davis is clearly the better prospect and will get drafted ahead of TRob; however, AD will be going against the likes of Pal Gasol, Howard, Duncan, Ibaka, etc. He doesn't quite have the body to man up against them yet. And you know Withey actually made teams second guess whether he'll have the offensive skills to play against those big guys

UK beat us soundly and you could say that defensively AD was the key; however, offensively he was not the key to the game.

0

texashawk10 1 year ago

Agreed, Anthony Davis will be a poor man's Dwight Howard. He'll be a great defensive player and rebounder but have a limited offensive game.

0

JJHawq 1 year ago

The agent is there for more than just the team contract. He also helps round up endorsements and other money making opportunities... Others have noted that there is a little bit of a negotiation to go through (ala X Henry) w/ the team, but this is minor.
