Kansas University head football coach Charlie Weis on Wednesday released the format for the 2012 KU Spring Game scheduled for Saturday, April 28.

The Jayhawks will kick off at 1 p.m., at Memorial Stadium and will use a live-game format.

Admission to the game is free.

The following outlines the details of the game:

• During pregame warm-ups, all defensive players will be in white jerseys and offensive players will be in blue jerseys, while quarterbacks will wear red jerseys. After warm-ups, offensive and defensive players will then change into their respective blue or white jerseys.

• Game rosters will list players for a blue team and a white team.

• Coaches for the blue team will be Rob Ianello (wide receivers), Jeff Blasko (tight ends), Charlie Weis, Jr. (student manager-offensive assistant), Dave Campo (defensive coordinator/defensive backs) and DeMontie Cross (linebackers).

• Coaches for the white team will be Ron Powlus (quarterbacks), Reggie Mitchell (running backs), Tim Grunhard (offensive line), Clint Bowen (defensive backs), Maurice Crum (defensive graduate assistant), Matthew Middleton (quality control-offense) and Kyle Brey (quality control-offense).

• Due to a lack of depth at defensive line, all defensive linemen will be dressed in alternate colored jerseys and will be rotated for both teams by Buddy Wyatt (defensive line) and Rod Jones (defensive graduate assistant).

• Specialists also will wear an alternate color.

• There will be no kickoff/kickoff returns. For possessions to start the half or after scores, the ball will be placed at the 30 yard line.

• Punts/punt returns will end when the returner fair catches the ball, picks up a rolling ball or when a defensive player downs the ball. Normal rules will apply for touchbacks.

• A coin toss will decide who gets the ball to start the game.

• There will be four 15 minute quarters (running time). The clock will only stop for timeouts or injuries with the exception of the last two minutes of each half, in which normal game clock rules will be followed. (Officials may stop the clock at their discretion.)

• MVP’s will be announced after the game and the Jayhawks will join the band for the Alma Mater immediately following the game.

No news for McCay

KU received no word from the NCAA on Wednesday regarding the eligibility status of wide receiver Justin McCay. McCay, a transfer from Oklahoma, is waiting to hear if his hardship waiver will be approved.

Is the "believe burning" where all Turner Gill related items will be set on fire still planned for after the game?

jgrobb 2 years, 5 months ago

B - Believe in each other and things not yet seen... TGill fired, Weis hired..

The acronym per se was not bad..

But lay off Gill already it makes you look small..........

I firmly believe any jabs at Turner Gill are more than justified ... Not only were we an embarrassment on the football field but the young men who were playing for KU so they could also receive an education were not being held accountable for their classroom performance ... An entire football team carrying over 50 failing grades is unacceptable ...

That is why we ridicule him ...

The total failure on and off the field that was KUFB under Turner Gill made a national impact and is worthy of ridicule. That said, we do not need to keep the ignominy of it current in our thoughts -- or the thoughts of others -- by not letting it fade into into the history books and focusing on the future with Weis & Co in charge.

Yesterday is gone, learn from it and move on...

NEVER FORGET TURNER GILL!!! We don't want history to repeat itself!

Yeah I'm with you! He was rediculous! What a joke of a coach! Terrible! Absolutely I cannot believe I supported him.

Geeze, someone answer the dang question!

0

The short answer is “yes”, with the caveat that you commence the fire with a sacrificial self-immolation. While this will create a void where your frequent (sad) attempts at humor would normally reside, it will be for the greater good of the website and posters alike.

Ah, come on. This board wouldn't be the same without old ahperse. Besides, he should get a few wild cards for shouting out "the king has no clothes" after the first TG press conference, or first game (whichever it was).

He has occasions, though rare. One need look no further than the fact he had three comments removed just today. The wild cards have to be running out.

Love the organization and the Alma Mater after the game!!!

Charlie did this at ND too. The players and staff went down to the band section and sang the alma mater with the crowd win or loss.

Coach Tiller did it at Purdue in the early 90's as well. Very cool. I wonder where it started? Probably has roots as far back as The Chant.

0

jhawkrulz 2 years, 5 months ago

I believe that ND has been doing that since the beginning of time. Charlie just continued the tradition and wants to bring things that are good to KU.

UT sports teams sing "Eyes of Texas" after every game, win or lose. Similar thing - I like it.

In the pic above ....... Where's Charlie's other foot??? Did it come off while kicking some a$$ this spring???

KUSHELLY 2 years, 5 months ago

Now that was hilarious ... Thanks for the laugh!

That's funny!

Wouldn't you like to see the picture caption: "Coach Charlie Weis pictured minus his right foot which he lost while kicking ass at Tuesday's practice."

Can we get a live feed, or maybe, is Bob Davis gonna call it? I would love to be able to sit back on Saturday and at least hear what's happening.

Matt Tait 2 years, 5 months ago

Jesse Newell will be there doing the live blog like we do for football and basketball games... It's not audio or video, but at least it's something and it will have all the highlights and some photos, as well.

Matt last year the game was on tv although it was mostly interviews. Is that not the same as last year?

0

nuleafjhawk 2 years, 5 months ago

You're right about that! I got so frustrated watching the interviews, I gave up and mowed the yard. Turned out to be one of the better football Saturdays of the year for me.

Love the idea of the team singing the ala mater! I'd also like to see them head over to the student section after games (particularly wins) and give the students a high five for supporting the team. Haven't seen that since Mangino's early years. Maybe then KU won't have to bribe the student section with 4th quarter Xbox raffles to stay for the whole game...

Matt/staff -- Admission will be free, will parking be free as well?

0

John Mueller 2 years, 5 months ago

Son, there are no doors to a football stadium, but we appreciate your support!

It's not Allen Fieldhouse, sit anywhere u like.

You can't miss us. We are located in a big horseshoe right at the bottom of the hill under the campanile.

Dirk Medema 2 years, 5 months ago

Will Heaps be the QB for the other team?

0

kujayhox 2 years, 5 months ago

I am a big fan of the team singing with the band at the end. a good tradition to start!

0

Tony Bandle 2 years, 5 months ago

They should sing Louie, Louie.....like in Animal House!!
