T. Boone Pickens: League in trouble if MU leaves

— Oklahoma State billionaire booster T. Boone Pickens says the Big 12 is in trouble if Missouri leaves.

Missouri has been rumored to possibly follow Texas A&M to the SEC. In San Antonio on Tuesday, Pickens said “we got a real problem” if Missouri doesn’t stay in the Big 12.

The oil magnate has given Oklahoma State’s football program hundreds of millions of dollars and kept vocal during the latest round of college realignment. Pickens also says TCU and Houston are the most sensible replacements for the Big 12.

The Aggies will begin playing in the SEC next year.

Five Big 12 teams are ranked in the Top 25 — which Pickens says makes it unusual that the conference is “falling apart.”

Why doesn't Pickens just BUY the SEC, pick the teams he wants in the Big (insert number here) __, and send the rest of them to the Big East?

Why is this guy so often quoted? Why does he matter? Why pay him lip service?

KU has its wealthy boosters, but how often do we see them quoted as voices from the mount? And, the same could be said about all the other schools and their boosters.

So, T. Boone ... just go away.

As coveted as Missouri thinks it is, it is still the #5 revenue school in the current configuration of the Big 12, behind Texas, OSU, OU and Kansas (see the USA Today's report on the 2010 school year athletic revenues).

How sad is it to have a state with that many people, be the ONLY major athletics program in the state, and still come in behind KU--which is from the smallest state in the union to support two BCS-level programs.

Cant hate on T. Boone myself. The guy loves his school and wants to see it succeed and, like many of us, is concerned about the state of the Big 12. In the end, he's just a very wealthy fan that the media likes to get sound bytes from.

Besides his rant in last years realignment and the bashing of Missouri then was epic.

+1 Alec. If KU had an advocate like Pickens, might that change the tone of many of these comments?

+2 Most universities have some wealthy alumni. But what university wouldn't love to have one like T. Boone?

T.Boone is as annoying as Spike Lee is on the NY sideline.

Does anybody care what TBone has to say? Just because Okie State let's him dictate their every move, it doesn't mean he knows anything about college athletics. He is a bully.

Read between the lines. By "league" he means "osu". A jump by mu means the superconference game is on and conferences will fill from the bottom, up. Meaning schools like UT and OU cannot dictate that their little brothers osu and tt come with them and take a valuable spot.

Add TCU and Houston? Is the Big XII going to morph into the SWC?

When O-State was rumored to be leaving with OU Pickens could have cared less how the chips were going to land for the castaways. Now its "We" have a big problem.

Mizzou needs to take a look in the mirror... for all the gloating over how everyone wants Mizzou and nobody wants Kansas.... they have yet to get a confirmed invite to another conference. Plus, by announcing they had an invite when they didn't....twice.... they have given themselves a black eye to the remaining Big XII schools, and maybe the B1G and SEC also.

T. Boone Pickens makes sense to me. He is famous for asking why our country borrows $$ from China to buy oil from the Middle East countries that what to destroy us. He claims we have plenty of natural gas and while it's too heavy a lift to convert all our cars and trucks it would be quite feasible to convert all our long haurler (18 wheelers) to natural gas. Thus lowering our dependence on foreign oil and lowering the price to refuel our cars, keeping billions in our own country where today we burn off the excess natural gas.

T.Boone respects Bill Self decision to stay here, is passionate about his school, has a common sense approach to our oil imports and is willing to stand up to UT Longhorn conference domination. I wish I worked for him, he makes sense to me.

WVU, L'ville, Boise all have more BCS appearances than Missouri and all 3 have more BCS wins than TAMU.

I personally don't give a big damn what T Boone thinks about anything. It's hard to know whether he is more selfish or self-centered. He has pledged a lot of money to OSU, but I don't think they have it all in the house yet. He pulled a similar deal at WTAMU in Canyon, TX. They ultimately took his name off the building. He promotes natural gas because he owns a lot of it. He sticks his nose in realignment talks because he likes to see his name in the papers.

It seems to me that the best news of all at this point is no news. The negotiations are going on in private, and in my opinion, will therefore yield a much better outcome. We don't need any more public posturing. We need a solid result.
