A freshman Kansas University football player who faced a DUI charge has been granted diversion, according to court records.

Ben Heeney, 19, a linebacker from Hutchinson, was charged with DUI and racing on a highway after a Lawrence police officer pulled him over around 3:30 a.m. July 16 in the 700 block of West 23rd Street. Heeney’s attorney had said he was seeking diversion in the case in an agreement with prosecutors, and it was approved earlier this week.
