AP source: Mike Leach will be new Washington State football coach

— Mike Leach has reached an agreement to be the new football coach at Washington State.

An official within the athletic department told The Associated Press on Wednesday that Leach has reached a verbal agreement to replace Paul Wulff, but has not signed a contract. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to comment publicly on the matter.

Leach posted an 84-43 record at Texas Tech, taking the Red Raiders to nine bowl appearances in 10 seasons. He was fired in 2009 over an incident in which a player with a concussion was made to stand in a shed during practice.

Wulff was fired Tuesday after four losing seasons.

escaped_labrat 10 years, 1 month ago

Yep, everyone and their mother on ESPN is very happy he didn't sign up with KU. Well, WSU acted quickly. Let's drag this out as long as possible so we can hire another Div II coach. Reminds me of Black Friday.....we're standing around debating which doorbuster to buy and other shoppers are grabbing all the good stuff, lol.

Randy Bombardier 10 years, 1 month ago

I think Zenger could have pulled the trigger if Leach was interested in KU. I don't think we lost him if we were ever really pursuing him. (We being KU, not LJW) I might also caution that this may or may not be true.

lookerforoil 10 years, 1 month ago

If we remember, Lew had to settle for Gill because with the way we treated Mangino, no one else wanted the KU job 2 years ago. Now, we need to hope that ADSZ can pull the next Bill Snyder out of the assistant ranks as Friedricks did with Roy Williams 23 years ago. Too many other schools need coaches now and KU may have a difficult time trying to hire a successful, proven coach. My hopes are that ADSZ can find the next Bill Snyder of our generation.

bradynsdad 10 years, 1 month ago

Ap sources have also reported ku has publicly put out their list. First is bill Cowher followed closely by Jon Gruden then mike ditka.

Funhawk 10 years, 1 month ago

Also Herm Edwards, Tony Dungy, Marty Schottenheimer, and matriculatin' Hank Stram.

Geekinout 10 years, 1 month ago

Herm Edwards was the freakin Turner Gill of the NFL... Was around .500 or below with the Jets and went to the Chefs and choked... I don't get why people think he's the answer? Unless, you really want another Turner Gill here? Anything that's been a product of the Jackson County Missouri Chef's I don't want tainting The University of Kansas...

John Brown 10 years, 1 month ago

money for nuth'n and your chicks for free! 6 million payout and they never had to win a single game.

Dan Harris 10 years, 1 month ago

I thought Jimmy Johnson was at the top of their list! I'm bummed because Leach was far and away the best coach out there, oh well on to our 2nd 3rd 4th 5th 6th choice.

shimjhawk 10 years, 1 month ago

What a joke, why even fire Gill if we're gonna dink around and get leftovers AGAIN. Perhaps when realignment happens again and we're relegated to the Missouri Valley someone will get a clue. The Wazzou AD said it best "We've gotta either run with the big dogs or admit we're a doormat".

hawkfan30 10 years, 1 month ago

There's nothing to say we dinked around but just like 2 years ago coaches don't want to come to Kansas and probably even less now that KU has demonstrated they are unwilling to give a coach time to recruit players, develop those players and implement their offensive and defensive schemes with those recruits. Worse yet our guaranteed multiyear contract offer means nothing to any potential coach.

What KU has told the world is we don't care if you can recruit, we won't give you time to develop them anyway, we want instant gratification and immediate wins.

If you can't do that by 2013 with the current players and next years recruits please don't come.

actorman 10 years, 1 month ago

Of for God sake, that is one of the most ridiculous posts I've ever seen!

No, what we've told the world is that we won't keep someone who's so completely incompetent at his job that he loses by over 30 points in half his games and can't run a crucial play (at any point in the game) without calling one or more timeouts first.

Any coach with an IQ over 12 can see that firing Gill had nothing to do with impatience on KU's part and everything to do with incompetence on Gill's part.

I am almost as sick of the TG apologists as I am of the marauding Mangino fans.

hawkfan30 10 years, 1 month ago

I never mentioned TG in this post assume what you want I'm simply stating a well known attitude in sports. You fire a coach in such a short period of time you become "risk" to potential coaches.

What does a guarantee mean when you already didn't honor one? To quote Tommy Boy I can take a $*@& in a box and slap a guarantee on it it doesn't mean it's a quality product.

In fact I believe my opening statement would have been disrespectful of TG saying the only reason he got the job was because no one else wanted it.

Micky Baker 10 years, 1 month ago

I, for one, am getting sick of people pretending that Gill didn't have enough time. He had the two top recruiting classes in the history of KU, one of which was already here when he got here.

There are no excuses to his performance in his second year.

You said "What KU has told the world is we don't care if you can recruit, we won't give you time to develop them anyway, we want instant gratification and immediate wins. "

And I'm pretty sure nobody actually said what you assert has been said. Demagoguery is best left to the Democrats. It doesn't belong here.

actorman 10 years, 1 month ago

You were doing well, tx1973, until you had to go and add an idiotic political comment. Are you saying that spending years talking about Obama's birth certificate is not demagoguery? Or calling him a Socialist? Or saying he's un-American? Or any other of the thousands of hate-filled comments spewing every minute of every day from the countless hate-radio stations all over America.

I will admit that there is demagoguery on both sides, but the Democrats don't do it remotely as much as the Republicans do.

142466 10 years, 1 month ago

You have a valid point there under ordinary circumstances. However, Gill's coaching methods and the team's performance over the 2 year period were horrible, drastically below acceptibility, and steadily declining. He is the exception that proves your rule. I'm pretty sure that the candidates now being considered view it that way, too.

actorman 10 years, 1 month ago

Don't be so sure, kufirst. Just because it's being talked about everywhere doesn't make it true. Until it's officially announced, I'll still hold out hope that we haven't dodged a bullet and can actually get an incredibly successful coach who runs an extremely exciting offense. God, what a horrible thought for KU! I can see why you wouldn't want that!

Scott Smetana 10 years, 1 month ago

Dang. I was getting excited about having a winning coach. Just because Leach got screwed by TT and is fighting back, that doesn't make him a bad person or coach. In fact, the man could win! No reason Wash St. should get him over us.

Randy Bombardier 10 years, 1 month ago

Well I let the excitement get the better of me. I really didn't like the LJW running the Leach PR campaign and knew in the end that it would just make it harder to land him, make his stock go up, etc. I trust Zenger to do a good job. He will take his time and be thorough. That doesn't mean we get leftovers by any means. But, the one thing I do think we need is Buzz or some kind of move that gets interest and confidence back.

Benjamin Piehler 10 years, 1 month ago

No way BGL would have gone along with hiring him anyway. He must still have some real issues if he's winding up all the way out at WSU.

justinryman 10 years, 1 month ago

Can anyone show proof that Leach was Zengers first choice? If not then you can not be mad at him.

Now I was not a fan of Leach coming to KU, didn't want to deal with him as a persona (yes persona not person) and overshadow the program itself. So for that I am happy.

Now if he was the first choice and KU swung and missed then I am upset cause then they are searching again and starting over in their process.

Until we all know for sure if he was or wasn't Zengers first choice don't bang on Zenger to hard for it.

There could a million reasons as to why Leach chose WSU of KU. Money. Conference stability. Inheriting a terrible football team. Stoops and Snyder told him to stay away.

cobweb 10 years, 1 month ago

Leach is a wack job. Give Zenger a chance. He might surprise us.

MorganR 10 years, 1 month ago

I agree. Coach Leach produced wins at Texas Tech but at a high cost to that University. His treatment of players was inexcusable. I would not want my son to play for him. As much as I would like to see some of my son's high school teammates that are considering Division 1 schools play for KU, I would not recommend coach Leach to the parents of my son's friends. I am confident that there are coaches that have high ethical standards, care about the kids, and can win football games.

Dan Harris 10 years, 1 month ago

Yeah what a high cost to the tech program! He only took them to 10 STRAIGHT freaking bowl games pea brain, and just what the F did he do that was so freaking bad ! I live in Texas and have a lot of close friends that live in Lubbock, he was rail roaded out of town by the AD and Craig for not playing a whining, I've had everything giving to me all of my life, I'm entitled brat! I guess it kind of sounds like half the freaking country!!!!

Sam Constance 10 years, 1 month ago

What treatment of his players?

Specifically, and without using press releases by Texas Tech administration to provide your proof.

Leach got railroaded. He was not abusive to his players in the slightest.

Jeff Coffman 10 years, 1 month ago

He was fired hours...nearly minutes, before he was supposed to receive a $700,000 bonus for getting them to another bowl game.

Remember when they put Tebow in a Dark Room, it was the best story on ESPN, when they put the son of an ESPN Analyst in a Dark Room, it was how could a parent stand back and watch the horrible things that a coach did to my son. Please keep in mind under oath, the player backed off any negative statements.

shelleysue 10 years, 1 month ago

I was mixed about Leach so I'm ok with it. I am expecting Zenger to hire someone he has ties to and knows he can trust to turn this program around. I think he will make a good hire. When Gill let Chris Dawson go, I felt he was making a huge mistake. I would like to have him back. I also think Zenger will make sure the new coach makes good hires for his entire staff because the OC and DC definitely need to go too. I'm really looking forward to the announcement. Rock Chalk!

Darin Bradley 10 years, 1 month ago

Someone he has ties to??? Who would that be who has quality BCS coaching experiece? SZ might get exposed and end up over his head too. Hope I'm wrong but I have a feeling the longer this drags out, the uglier its gonna be. "In Zenger We Trust"? Can't go there yet...

texashawk10 10 years, 1 month ago

Damn, we stuck out on a coach who would've completely ignore KU's already embarrassing defense. How will KU ever have any chance of succeeding now that the greatest coach since sliced bread has gone to coach elsewhere.

squawkhawk 10 years, 1 month ago

Wazzu gives Leach a better chance to win a championship. The Pac 12 is very weak. He'd struggle for 2 or 3 years at KU and then be run out of town because he'd only win 5 to 7 games each year while the expectation is 10 wins.

Petersen is going to UCLA.

We are waiting Zenger. Please use your expertise to work and fill this position by Friday.

Good grief... Quit with all the whining and acting like Zenger failed! We don't have any real idea if Leach was a top choice and evenif he was, we have no idea if Leach was interested. Did Zenger really honest-to-God think he was keeping Gill 3 weeks ago? Really? Like if he pulled a miracle in Arrowhead? Was he worried that there were going to be rumors around about Gill being replaced? Like duh?

Unless he really thought Gill was it until the bitter end, 3-4 weeks ago was the time for the short-lists and the phone-tag and selling it to BGL and the rest. And there should have been a "here's the guy" pretty quickly after Gill left. Maybe there will be and he's just playing for drama.

But, if he seriously didn't have a coach of at least equal stature picked and committed and signed before he pulled the trigger on Gill's hefty buyout clause, we're dealing with an AD who thinks it's 1955 in the college sports world.

VaJay 10 years, 1 month ago

My gosh, what an expert you must be. Please call SZ immediately and tell him how to do his job better. & stay off this website for the benefit of the rest of us.

actorman 10 years, 1 month ago

"But, if he seriously didn't have a coach of at least equal stature picked and committed and signed before he pulled the trigger on Gill's hefty buyout clause, ..."

Equal stature to Gill? WTF are you talking about? You mean like half of the civilized world?!?!? He could walk down the street and find someone of equal stature to Gill in 20 minutes!

shelleysue 10 years, 1 month ago

I think some sources have said that Zenger knew a few weeks ago Gill was out. I'm guessing he's been planning the future since then and I would be shocked if he doesn't have that done by now. The fans and boosters are upset about the last two years, so it doesn't surprise me that he's waiting for everything to be finalized before making an announcement.

Dyrk Dugan 10 years, 1 month ago

thank the living God that Leach went out west. we did not need the big baggage he would have brought. i figured it would be this school or Arizona St. he can basically work under the radar in Pullman WA...and still build his kind of program.

there's a lot of schools needing coaches right now....this is not the ideal time to be looking for a head football coach. So SZ will have to get creative in the hire.

still out there and quite viable: Dave Doeren at UNI; Mark Stoops from FSU: the DC from Alabama, Kirby Smart; Kevin Sumlin at Houston; Brent Venables, DC at OU.

and why wouldn't Skip Holtz deserve a look into? the Big East is blowing up in football...his dad coached at Arkansas, so he knows about the midwest. Plenty of good fish out there. Let's reel in a dandy, Mr. Z!

Go Jayhawks!

Jeff Coffman 10 years, 1 month ago

Quit bringing up Doeren, he sucks...he doesn't have the experience and the one thing that no one can even begin to fatham is he lost to TG ... "The worst coach in KU Football History!"

texashawk10 10 years, 1 month ago

Skip Holtz is currently 1-5 in that steaming trash pile of a conference. He's taking USF into the toilet pretty damn quickly.

TaskForce 10 years, 1 month ago

A big question mark for Zenger??? Who would fire a coach and pay him $6 million if the AD did not already have someone contacted and committed? Just does not make any sense. Do we have another Perkins at KU?

irvan moore 10 years, 1 month ago

i like leach, wish he was going to be here but i think the ad has had someone in mind for a couple of weeks and is probably having dinner with him/her right now but has to go through a "process" to keep everybody happy

bjejayhawk69 10 years, 1 month ago

Leach going to WSU is a surprise. His Texas recruiting ties won't help and seems difficult to recruit to being in the middle of nowhere. Lubbock was middle of nowhere but it was in Texas. If he didn't come here I thought he would go west but to UCLA or Arizona state. Must be throwing a ton of $$ his way.

truman 10 years, 1 month ago

I agree with all the people who think Leach is a bit crazy. We don't need his baggage. There are plenty of choices left and furthermore, who ever said he was the AD's first choice? In the top 3 sure but really sometimes crazy is crazy. Who wants that on top of our other problems?

Jayhawker111 10 years, 1 month ago

Zenger should be fired.

Are you kidding me -- he fires Gill without having another coach already signed.

Zenger is no businessman.

Steve Peterson pulls the same bull at Nebraska.

Peterson fired Solich without having another coach signed and evenutally settled for Callahan.

What a loser coach he was and KU will also get some loser coach.

No reason to fie Gill if KU did not have somebody signed and ready to go.

Zenger is an idiot and should also be fired for incompetence.

STLJHawk86 10 years, 1 month ago

Step back from the ledge 111, and take a few deep breaths.
Zenger is not a businessman, however, he is a FOOTBALL man. My guess he will do fine. In the meantime, you should consider waiting a few nanoseconds before you pass judgement on every rumor that makes it way to the web.

Jayhawker111 10 years, 1 month ago

Why was Zenger vacationing with the basketball team in the past two weeks in Hawaii all the while knowing that he needed to hire a football coach?

Now after firing Gill he says he is on the next plane to scour the country for the best football coach.

Why wasn't Zenger on the plane a month ago?

Please do not hire a guy like Fedora and act like you did something special --the guy lost to Marshall and UAB this year.

Just because Zenger used to coach football and got an administration degree does not make him a businessman.

A good businessman has his choice selected and announced the next day after firing Gill.

I believe that Zenger is incompetent and is in over his head, just like Steve Peterson who pulled the same blunder at Nebraska..

VaJay 10 years, 1 month ago

Wow. Stick to armchair quarterbacking without the internet connectivity...

actorman 10 years, 1 month ago

Well, as long as you're being rational about it ...

Let's see, it's been three days. Not a single one of the top coaches on KU's list (per Matt Tait, so it may well not even be the full list) has officially been hired anywhere yet, and there are plenty of attractive possibilities out there. And oh, BTW, I can understand why you'd be concerned about the KU AD going to Hawaii for a big tournament with the KU basketball team. After all, it's not possible to conduct any business these days from anywhere other than your own office. It's so difficult to make phone calls, fax things to people, or communicate via the internet, how could he ever have managed???

111, just because you've been able to figure out how to post something on the internet doesn't make you a person with an intelligence level above that of a 10-year-old.

Darin Bradley 10 years, 1 month ago

Passionate post and may not be that out of line. Two major events so far on SZs watch. Conference Realignment and Coaching Change. Clearly he seemed over his head during the realignment talks. Reactionary w/ limited networking power. Now we have this coaching change. His candidates should have been tee'd up and ready to meet as soon as he fired Gill. No excuses. He's developing a reputation as someone slow to take action. Yes KU Nation wants to think the best of the new AD but there is nothing wrong w/ some critical analysis of his actions so far

justinryman 10 years, 1 month ago

Perhaps the reason Leach wasn't hired and there is no news of someone is that.....

They are waiting for this weekends games to get over with and will announce something on either Sunday or Monday??

Has anyone thought of this or was everyone to tied up in Mike Leach?

Kent Wells 10 years, 1 month ago

Interesting thought.... Hummm. Southern Miss plays Houston. Hell, maybe KU gets the winner, or the loser???

Jeff Coffman 10 years, 1 month ago

Either way KU would be a loser with either one of those might be a step up from TG, but that isn't saying anything. Again 19-11 is not good in C-USA and Sumlin has like one good season against a sissy schedule...Shoot KU would have been bowl bound in that league.

Eric Williams 10 years, 1 month ago

let's see... C-USA > MAC

Fedora (in 4 seasons at S. Miss) 7-5, 7-5, 8-4, 10-2 Sumlin (in 4 seasons at Houston) 8-5, 10-4, 5-7, 12-0

Fedora (1-2 in bowls, will go to his 4th straight) Sumlin (1-1 in bowls, will go to his 3rd in 4 years)

Conference records: Fedora: 20-12 Sumlin: 24-8

The point is either of these guys are good coaches. KU is not a premier program that is going to get the Venebles or Smarts (the premier coordinators).

Personally, I prefer Fedora given his penchant for winning records.

irvan moore 10 years, 1 month ago

i dunno, i think zenger is smart and i think he is qualified, i'm going to believe that as long as he doesn't prove otherwise

actorman 10 years, 1 month ago

Beatnik, you'd be better be careful. If you keep displaying that much logic and rationality, you might get banned from these boards ...

JHawk74 10 years, 1 month ago

WSU probably doesn't care about the lawsuits Leach has with TT and ESPN. KU couldn't hire a coach with lawsuits against a member of the Big 12 and against ESPN (who is paying the Big 12 money for televised games). WSU probably has less expectations for Leach also and will give him time to develop the players. KU shows that you must win or your out in 2 years. I have no idea who will be the next KU coach but glad it won't be Leach.

actorman 10 years, 1 month ago

No, for the umpteenth time, KU doesn't show that you must win or you're (notice that new-fangled thing called an apostrophe, BTW) out in 2 years. It shows that you must be able to display at least a tiny amount of competence or you'll be out in 2 years.

dmc67 10 years, 1 month ago

What are the expectations for the football program? Anyone thinking Leach was the answer should consider this: Tech picked up the Texas kids that OU, A&M, and UT didn't want or asked to walk on. That being said, Tech, Baylor, Okie Light, TCU and now SMU and Houston are in a better state for football than KU. Some of Mangino's success was finding kids that nobody else wanted and turning them into very good players(that works every once in awhile). Some of his success was not having to play OU or Texas in back to back seasons, A&M was horrible and Nebraska was as bad as they had ever been. Kstate has facilities that rival a MAC school but football is still the #1 sport in Manhattan. KU is a basketball school that also plays football. Is 7-5, 6-6, or 5-7 and having a chance to play in a bowl game considered a success? If expectations are any higher than that, I feel people need to come back to earth. Texas, OU, OSU, TCU, West Virginia are going to be better than KU. ISU, Baylor, Tech , and maybe Kstate are the schools you have to beat to be bowl eligible. What happened in 2007-2008 should be enjoyed not expected.

troutsee 10 years, 1 month ago

No! No! No! A thousand times no. It is just your sort of attitude that has created the culture that now exists at KU. So what if we have an excellent basketball team. That does not necessarily make us a basketball school. For god's sake, if Boise State, KState, FSU, VTech can rise out of the ashes in football, why in the hell can't we? If you want to be a football power, make that your goal and don't settle for anything less. Any organization wants to be the best at what they do. That should be their stated goal. Any CEO who shoots for anything less should be fired. And any football coach or AD who is willing to settle for anything less should not be hired.

Finally, I keep hearing the name Mike Stoops. Why in the world would we want a guy who could not win at Arizone. Larry Fedora, yeah I could go for him. I still think that Glenn Mason should be given a hard look.

But for god's sake, let's change the loser culture as it relates to football at KU Please!!!!

dmc67 10 years, 1 month ago

This culture has existed for at least 40yrs. Before 2008, I was 13 days old when KU played in meaningful bowl game. Every school you mentioned is a "football" school. Schools that have had success in both basketball and football all have one thing in common. Good high school football in their own state. Kansas does not have that luxury. Please don't use Uconn or West Virginia as a counter. Big East, by default, gets a team into a BCS bowl game. I witnessed many a game in the mid 80's that were sooo bad I proclaimed there would never be a KU football team as bad as those teams. I was wrong. Switzer, Osborne, and Jimmy played their players through 3 quarters and scores were in the 60's. If Sherman and Gundy played their starters through the 3rd quarter, someone would've scored 100. You state it's my sort of attitude that has created the culture that exists. I beg to differ. It's the inability to field a competitive program for a majority of my lifespan. Unless you are from a time before me, KU football has never been relevant. I want to be competitive. I want to go to a football game in Austin, Waco, Lubbock, no longer College Station, and be able to enjoy the experience. There was nothing enjoyable about Stillwater, College Station, and Austin. If want want to run this organization like a business don't use the airlines as an example. Pay for performance not this guaranteed $10 million to someone that
won 40% of the time before coming to a bigger program. Just my thoughts.

troutsee 10 years, 1 month ago

Sure it has existed for a long time and partly because of guys like you who are willing to accept mediocrity in our football program. I am not and never will be. There is no reason that we cannot be a winner in both sports.

Incidently, in your followup you left out KState and Boise State and there are others such as TCU, Okie State, and Utah.

Come on. Let's think big and stop conceding football.

d2psugrad 10 years, 1 month ago

Many of the big name coaches feel like they have to 4 star recruits to be competitive. We need a good X and O guy, preferably with some Juco connections that can coach up the 2 and 3 star kids we can attract. He's probably not job hunting, but the coach at Sam Houston State has a very impressive resume with 2 juco titles and is currently in the drivers seat to win this years FCS Div. 1 championship as SHSU is undefeated. I hope Z and his consultant are turning over stones and looking at guys like this. A "builder" who has not had a shot at the big time that has ties to Juco Talent could be great for KU.

actorman 10 years, 1 month ago

You may be right about him, d2p, but I seriously doubt that KU will pick another guy with limited (or in this case no) D1 experience after the TG fiasco.

d2psugrad 10 years, 1 month ago

Your probably right about it being a coin flip on if he would be successful, but Snyder has done a heck of a job (both times) and juco kids have been his bread and butter. Someone climbing the ladder that has connections with Juco coaches can get the real scoop on what your getting with each kid. The Fritz cat at Sam is in the NJCAA hall of fame and most likely knows some folks.

texashawk10 10 years, 1 month ago

Difference between Fritz and Snyder is that Snyder was a long time assistant at a major program before getting his shot at KSU whereas Fritz has never coached in any capacity at the FBS level and therefore would have work his way up through the Sun Belt or WAC or some other mid-major conference before he gets a crack at an FBS school.

Sounds unheard of but was wondering the same thing. We already owe him the money why not put it to use.

Jeff Coffman 10 years, 1 month ago

The contract was for "Head Coach", so no. They would have had to renegotiate the contract, and that wasn't going to happen without a reduction in pay.

JayHok 10 years, 1 month ago

Interesting. I wonder if changing his job title with a 100G raise was discussed. Yes he'd be the highest paid QB coach in the history of the game but like you said, the $6 million for Gill's next 3 years is already spent, so in a way, it's a cheap way to get a really good recruiter/quarterback coach.

Eric Williams 10 years, 1 month ago

then the incoming HC would have to compete with his assistant coach on staff for loyalty from his players. ridiculous that we're even discussing this.

Varlo52 10 years, 1 month ago

What a shame that the know-it-alls who post here aren't the AD. We would be set for at least a dozen unbeaten seasons.

Zenger has a policy of not discussing candidates publicly but told The Star on Wednesday afternoon that he has spent the past few days laying the groundwork over the phone and will now leave Lawrence to conduct his search. Zenger says he has "a strong set of six to 10" coaches that he is considering at the moment and that he will not return to KU until he has his guy.

"When I find the right guy, I will stop," Zenger said.

News bulletin to Zenger - A competent AD would have had his ducks in order and had a new coach already to be hired the day after the GILL firing. You should have been looking for a coach a month ago and now today you decide to leave Lawrence to conduct a search. WOW!

If you had your act together the new coach should already be out recruiting.

Like you have a clue what's going on. The drivel is bad enough & then you post the same stuff just paraphrasing yourself.

kansas a.d. the clown can now come out of hes corner i could have done better job than this used car saleman i know i shold k.u. ad i would have leach contract 1 month ago i would not have to process any thing i would hire leach a slamdunk .but he had run pass big 12 ksu kc star.

If the WSU AD fired their coach yesterday and hired Leach today, then this has been in the works for awhile. We should have fired Gill sooner.

I can't believe all the Leach haters on this blog, who do you think will go to a bowl game first, WSU or KU???

Which team will have been to more bowls in the next 10 years???

C'mon, a big missed opportunity but Zenger go make it happen now, I wanted Leach and I am passed it now.

We are behind you Zenger (but deliver).

Geekinout 10 years, 1 month ago

I'm not that disappointed with Leach not coming here.. However, I am curious why Zenger wasn't ready to pull the gun on a list of coaches he should have already had in mind? If he pulls the "buddy card" or "Good Ole Boy" system like Perkins did KU might be in trouble...

Marvin Koelsch 10 years, 1 month ago

So two good recruiting years. If you red shirt most incoming freshmen. How many Juniors and Seniors does that leave on the field ?

Josh Galler 10 years, 1 month ago

sorry enough with the negative sh!t. Some of you have our basketball glasses on thinking kansas is all that and we all get the best coach. Our AD is knowing what he is doing, and I trust him. Our team won one conference win the past 3 years, so there will be coaches that do not want to coach here, so we need to deal with it.

The_Real_Hawkman 10 years, 1 month ago

we won 2 in the las 3 years Manginos team barely beat ISU then lost the rest but I think we get your point

The_Real_Hawkman 10 years, 1 month ago

WSU fired their coach YESTERDAY, something smells like the AD already talked to Leach and they agreed on the numbers. If not why didn't Leach listen to the other schools and start a bidding war?

Andy Tweedy 10 years, 1 month ago

I'd like to personally thank Tom Keegan for blanketing the entire midwest with the belief that SZ had wood for Mike Leach and that nobody else on the planet could have possibly filled our vacant coaching job!!! Now everybody is running around like it's the opening scene from Armageddon!!! Personally, I've been hoping the new coach is in Norman right now and will be returning home to Kansas to coach my beloved Jayhawks! But you know what else? If we don't hire him, I'm not going to start climbing on the ledge and proclaiming SZ failed at his job and let the entire world down with incompetence!!!

Maybe AD Zenger can use his KSU connections to land Venables but I think this is a long shot. He's probably waiting for a shot at the HC job at KSU once Snyder calls it quits again. Let's face it Jayhawk Nation, HC of the KU football team is not the most sought after job in the country and there are plenty of other HC positions to fill. Let's take off the crimson and blue tinted glasses and smell the coffee. We will probably have to settle for a D-I coordinator or take a gamble on a current D-II HC. Reminds me of 2 years ago when people actually thought we'd get Harbough but we ended up with Turner Gill. I got to believe that if Zenger has the guts to fire Gill after only 2 seasons and pay him $6mm to leave he will make a good decision for our next HC. If not he may be the next one headed out of Lawrence.

hawkfan30 10 years, 1 month ago

I couldn't agree with you more. I was hoping that KU would hire Venables 2 years ago.

scraptown 10 years, 1 month ago

As a K-state fan, I'd like to express how disappointed I am that your administration fired Coach Gill after only two years. I would also like to express my relief that coach Leach will be coaching at Washington state instead of KU. That is all.

JayhawkMafiaFamily 10 years, 1 month ago

Question: As a Kstate fan what are you doing on a KU message board? Don't you guys have the internet and your own message board in Manhattan?

scraptown 10 years, 1 month ago

I was checking the ljworld for news on a coaching hire, it is a newspaper in an area I live in. Prince was a terrible hire, but he did go to two bowl games. As far as when Snyder retires, Venables wants the job and so does Leavitt, so I think the future is not looking too bad. I made my comment tongue in cheek, sorry to offend your delicate sensibilities. Your "ku message board" is also your "Lawrence newspaper", if you don't want people on it, charge a member fee.

jayhawks71 10 years, 1 month ago

Were you also disappointed when KSU fired Ron Prince after 2 and a half years and 3 months after signing a contract extension and after going 17-20?

scraptown 10 years, 1 month ago

If Gill had a record like Prince's, he'd be coaching at ku for 10 more years, and making more than twice what prince made at K-state. Prince was a mistake, but not one that cost $6 million to remedy.

haps 10 years, 1 month ago

Extremely tough loss. No other coach we can hire (realistically) would have come in with more exposure, expectations, and a better track record than Leach. Regardless of who we get now, fans will be disappointed and I'm seriously worried that we're going to find ourselves in a situation of, say, taking the Houston coach - who to me is a half step better than Gill. he's had a couple good years (this is a great one) with an all-star QB and middling competition. he's not shown he can win consistently.

I'm really worried about who we will hire. We need a proven coach - we can't roll the dice again.

TXBBall55 10 years, 1 month ago

"taking the Houston coach"

LOL...he's laughing at KU. I'm sure he's ok that we don't settle for him...

JhawkalumJB 10 years, 1 month ago

My man is off the board, oh Mike Leach,... what might have been....

On to hoping for my #2 or #3 now my #1 and #2

1 Fedora

2 Venables

Honestly peeps, we gotta show some faith in Zenger here. He'll get the right guy in here. KU will be back!!!

Jeff Coffman 10 years, 1 month ago

What I find most disappointing, is that because KU has decided to be so secretive about this hire, I can't even find it on the rumors in ESPN. I mean really, FAU, Memphis, Akron ...etc. are getting updates, why can't KU give away a nugget, just for fodder and free advertisement on ESPN.

Please just give us something. Even give us that we are evaluating the best options for KU.

Speak or release a presser.

cool_beans 10 years, 1 month ago

i wonder what would have been if Leach was hired here but he had a worse record than Gill and i wonder if all you Leach lovers would call for his firing

squawkhawk 10 years, 1 month ago

If you really look at Leach's record in the Big 12 it wasn't really that impressive. About all he really did was create excitement with a pass happy offense (but no defense) and go to bowl games. Leach is not the end-all be-all of coaches and his off the field antics caused him to be a liability, literally.
