Trevor Lacey, a 6-foot-3 shooting guard from Huntsville, Ala., announced plans to play basketball at Alabama on Wednesday afternoon during a news conference at his high school.

The No. 24 player according to Rivals.com chose Alabama over KU, Kentucky and Auburn.

Lacey averaged 31 points a game his senior season. Known as a gifted shooter, Lacey made a campus visit to KU from May 7-9.

I can sympathize with staying in the comfort zone close to home. But wow, too bad he won't know the feeling of playing at a school where basketball matters. Good luck to him.

Given the recent tornados in Alabama I totally understand his decision to stay close to home. Good luck to you Mr. Lacey.

I would have loved to have Lacey - seems like a class kid and a winner. I respect his desire to stay home. With the destruction his home state has seen, this is a needed good news story for Alabama.

We'll be fine at the Guard position. And I'm glad he didn't go to Kentucky. Now he can go play with little Releford and help them compete in the SEC.

Good luck to you and Rock Chalk Jayhawk!

Alabama? For real dude? C'mon man....Are you f*ing joshing me? You honestly enjoy Meth addicts, tree killers, serial killers, uncompromising racism, Tea Party voters, civil war reinactors, and shotgun homicides?

I would have loved to see this kid in Crimson and Blue, but at the same time I admire his commitment to his family and his home state.

after the tornado's hit that area it makes sense to want to stay close to home, it reprioritizes everything.

Unbelievable. Not to denounce Alabama, but having the opportunity to play at one of the premier venues in America, and he picks 'Bama, I just don't get it. This is the equivalent of choosing Nebraska over KU in basketball. I trust that he does realize that 'Bama is known a little bit more for their football than their basketball. Good luck Trevor, hope it works out for you.

Barnes will start the season with a whole corral full of high powered Longhorns and at the end of the season will have his usual big pile of cow flop.

0

Ralster Jayhawk 2 years, 11 months ago

Aw shucks, kid from Alabama chose to stay home. Very likely because he will be the showcased "man", and rides those stats to the NBA. Come to KU, learn to hustle ur ass off playing D, and have less stats is simply less appealing. This is all ok. Self tells em all a realistic scenario, then lets them choose. He took the easy path. All parties move on...

Daniels committed to Texas....

0

GoNkrzy 2 years, 11 months ago

Just saw this on Yahoo...Daniels is a Longhorn...

The Texas Longhorns added yet another piece to their impressive 2011 recruiting class with the commitment of Woodland Hills Taft forward DeAndre Daniels. The 6-7.5, 185-pounder becomes the fourth member of the 2011 class to commit to the Longhorns. Burnt Orange Beat breaks the commitment and spoke with Daniels about his new team

Well that sucks. I thought with the immediate playing time available, this kid would have jumped all over the opportunity to play at KU.

Here's one thing that I've noticed in basketball recruiting: kids from the southeast part of the country do not leave the southeast part of the country. I would be interested to hear if anyone can come up with more than 2 or 3 big time recruits from the southeast that ended up playing at a school outside of the southeast. I'll start it off - Josh Selby. That's 1.

Its very strange. Kids from every other part of the country will go anywhere else in the country, but not the southeast. There a kid from Mississippi in next years class that is very high on KU according to rivals. I bet you dollars to doughnuts that he ends up in the SEC or maybe the ACC.

Anywho, the biggest need we have is still at big. We HAVE TO get either Daniels or Traylor. Otherwise we're in for a long season just because we won't have enough bodies down low. Either that or Releford needs to grow about 3 inches.

Someone help me please. I'm pretty sure that Garrett is a walk-on. If my mind hasn't betrayed me, why would anyone think a freshman walk-on would be in the starting rotation???

0

Sweet now Daniels and I will still call this a homerun!!!!!

The Traylor thing is on IMG blog Looks OFFICIAL to me

0

tis4tim 2 years, 11 months ago

Out of the three, I really thought we'd get Lacey. C'est la vie.

Alas, you can't miss something you never had, so I'm over it already. Now, let's see if we can't snare Daniels and/or Traylor.

truthfan 2 years, 11 months ago

Was just on IMG website Traylor Has picked KU!!!!!

What time is Daniels picking?

0

Marc Frey 2 years, 11 months ago

I guess he was not ready to play on National TV, so he picked 'Bama.

0

Joe Shaw 2 years, 11 months ago

What time is Daniels deciding? Any idea?

0

Well kiddies, you need to learn that March Madness face plants have consequences, these kids watch and learn, to many ku has become jay leno material.

0

Jayhawklegacy 2 years, 11 months ago

Daniels will hurt us more in my opinion, if he does not pick Kansas. Lacey was a good shooter, but I think he realized the guards we have that would battle him for playing time. Daniels could really feel a void that we need on this years team! Hopefully he picks us and has his best opportunity to learn from Manning! Come on DeAndre make the right choice.

The coach at Alabama can recruit. First the players he recruited to VCU beats us then he beats us for Lacy.

0

truthfan 2 years, 11 months ago

A swing and strike one!!! Thing are looking a little rough DD JT are not going to pick KU lets hope Trob and TT can put the team on there backs. Love the rest of the guys just don't see any impact players maybe BMac or EJ. Were is are out side shooting going to come from last year we could bang down low to get points (excluding the VCU game) when the 3 stoped falling Trob can only do somuch even if Jeff gets stronger and starts he is not going to get us 15 to 20 a night. I thought Lacy was going to be our outside guy now were do we go and we still need a big.

0

Funhawk 2 years, 11 months ago

In Tyshawn we trust. In Travis we trust. In Elijah we trust.

Go hawks!!! Watch these three veterans soar to new heights!

0

Ethan Berger 2 years, 11 months ago

Let's remember guys, his state was destroyed by storms and he is a home town boy. This is okay, wanted to stay close to home, whats wrong with that? I wish him luck.

0

Tony Bandle 2 years, 11 months ago

Should anyone really be surprised with Tyshawn, Elijah, BenMac, Nadiir, Conner [yes, Conner] plus Christian, the guard rotation would appear to be pretty crowded to a recruit.

I'm not about to pull a Duke or a UK and say we didn't want him or need him and good riddance. This one hurt and not getting Deandre could hurt even more.

The Kansas recruiting class is currently ranked 49th and it's not like we have a crowd of seasoned vets coming back. Figure, Tyshawn, TRob and Elijah and the rest are reserves and frosh.

2011-2012 will be the Kansas Coaching Staff greatest test.

The good news is we'll have 6 scholarships for the 2012 Monster Class [provided the world doesn't end, of course]

0

Dyrk Dugan 2 years, 11 months ago

i thought Lacey would be the first domino to fall for us...and now no dominoes may fall. at least he didn't go to UK..but wow, i figured he would then go to the next elite school. if it took him all of this time to figure out it was his home state school all along, why string it out?

best of luck to him.....is Daniels now the home run? it's definitely a solo shot...but if we don't land him, it's a double at best in recruiting this year.

“How we do could very well determine whether or not we have a chance to win the league next year or have a chance to just keep our head above water,” KU coach Bill Self said.

It is becoming blatantly obvious Self is not going to be pleased with his end results.

0

Mo Golany 2 years, 11 months ago

He must not have been that good if he thinks he will shine at Alabama and not KU. Oh well later buddy!

0

Chris Bailey 2 years, 11 months ago

Yeah! We lost another one! Why do these kids take recruiting trips if they have no plans of going to the school? Oh they get a free trip and get wined and dined on each of em. Who wouldn't want that?? Not surprised he didn't come here wonder if we were even in the picture???

0

Hank Cross 2 years, 11 months ago

Talent is talent. If he's good enough to play in the NBA, he'll play in it and it won't matter if he played at Bama, or UAB, or any other multi-directional state school. I'm just glad that it's looking less like a logjam at shooting guard. I really want to see what EJ and Travis are capable of.

0

William Blake 2 years, 11 months ago

At least he didn't join the puppy mill at UK...

0

Kevin Heath 2 years, 11 months ago

I'm a bit concerned regarding the recruiting at this point. I have no doubts about the talent currently on the team, but it would be nice to have a little backup. I thought Lacey was the best shot of the three. I really have little confidence that Daniels will sign with KU. While Traylor has potential, I don't see him being any significant help for next year. I guess I'm pretty disappointed in the way this has started among these three. Self stated he really needed to hit a home run with these guys, and my feeling is that we are going to strike out on these three. I really hope my feeling is wrong.

0

ahpersecoachingexperience 2 years, 11 months ago

cost himself a lot of money. going to a weaker school with less talent around him other teams will be able to key on him and limit his production

0

William Blake 2 years, 11 months ago

I knew he would pick Alabama after he handed his mother the flower bouquet in 'bama colors. Wonder who paid for the flowers?

Joking... good luck, Trevor!

0

hawksince51 2 years, 11 months ago

I never fault a kid for staying in his home state and I'm happy he did not go to UK. However, I do fault him for all this hoopla just as I did Selby last year. We usually lose on the BFD announcements and then when we have a rare win we end up with a bust like Selby. And I really do not wish to see another hotshot freshman come in and take away minutes from Releford or EJ. I do hope we get one of the bigs still out there.

0

Kevin Heath 2 years, 11 months ago

I don't hold it against him that he wanted to stay close to home, just as long as he realizes he threw away his best chance at major exposure, a great fan base who loves basketball, a chance to play at the best facility in the nation, and the best chance to further his own career. If he tells us anything at this conference other than I chose to play close to home and help my home school then he is completely delusional.

Good luck to you Mr. Lacey. I would almost guarantee you that of the 6000 people tuning in to view your announcement 5900 were from Kansas or Kentucky. That's OK though, there will be far less pressure on you at Alabama than either Kansas or Kentucky. Enjoy your football Saturdays, and then that indoor sport they play down there until next football season is where you can shine...in front of empty seats...no fans...no television...and no scouts.

0

chriz 2 years, 11 months ago

Didn't know Alabama had a basketball team...good luck!

0

Andy Hess 2 years, 11 months ago

he wanted to stay close to home. recruiting players from the south is so tough because they all want to stay close to home or at least in the south. the same thing here, and with johnny o'bryant, joe jackson, adonis thomas, romero osby, etc.

0

Theutus 2 years, 11 months ago

Seeing more and more of this... These kids that think they are superstar one and done are just going somewhere that they'll get a guaranteed 38 minutes/game.

They'll look like superstars amongst a bunch of lower talent... I can somewhat understand the logic, but honestly if they wanted to truly better their game they wouldn't take this easy route.

0

ClydeTurnbuckle 2 years, 11 months ago

Seriously Trevor, you seem like a good kid, and I sincerely wish you the best of luck in the N.I.T.

0

Ashtin Meerpohl 2 years, 11 months ago

How the hell do you pick Alabama over Kansas. He must not want to win very bad and knows he wont be in college for very long so he wanted to be close to home. Dumb decision.

0

livemontana 2 years, 11 months ago

seems like a great kid. Guessing he must have wanted to stay closer to family. These live press conferences NEVER go good for us! I guess it's good Daniels does not have one planned apparently - we got a chance!
