Kansas to face Richmond on Friday, tip scheduled for 6:27 p.m.

Kansas will face the Richmond Spiders in the Sweet Sixteen on Friday, March 25, 2011 at the Alamodome in San Antonio. The game is set to tip off at 6:27 p.m. and will be televised on TBS. Marv Albert, Steve Kerr and Craig Sager will be on hand to announce.

The teams have met once before, when Richmond knocked off KU in Allen Fieldhouse in 2004.

I remember that game like it was yesterday. Well, I remember the shot that beat us more than anything. I recall it so well because it was my birthday and it was a crappy b-day present. Here's hoping revenge will be sweet.

benshawks08 9 years, 10 months ago

Oh man, and remember that Vealy guy who went nuts and hit like 7 of 8 threes and only hit like 2 more the rest of the season. The only game that was worse for me that I went to was the Texas A&M game. Stupid Law!

Hello KU fans! Richmond alum and big spider fan here lurking on your board. We're not deluding ourselves.....we've got a tall mountain to climb, but you never know, right? It's pretty cool for us to play a great program like KU with so much on the line. A few things about us because there seems to be some misinformation on this board: 1) we are a very small school.....just 2800 undergrad. 2) used to be in colonial conference until move to A10 in early 2000's. 3) beat Dayton to win A10 championship. 4) our players are more athletic than you think, but probably the size you imagine. 5) we need to make a lot of 3's against you. 6) we have a real good defender (Garrett), but he'll have to work real hard versus your big men. 7) our best players are guard Anderson and forward Harper. 8) Richmond babes are hot.

I think our guys will show up and at least make you sweat a little. We'll be pulling hard for our boys here in VA. If you beat us though, we will be cheering very hard for you versus OSU. Cheers....from RVA.

Woody Cragg 9 years, 10 months ago

Sup Spiders? I've one niece in Richmond & another in Va Beach. They were raised in Virginia; Dad was retired Navy & passed on in Charlottesville 2yrs ago. Beautiful country around there. And the girls are fine, you got that right. Watched the ODU/Spider toun game about 10 days back. Spiders are quick and you're right about the 3's. If you can knock em down is likely your best chance. Never know, Davidson played outstanding against Jaybirds in 08. Mid majors don't get near enough repsect IMO. Good luck, I'm sure we'll chat again.

Michael Luby 9 years, 10 months ago

Hey thanks Spiders, that was cool, very nice of you.

Spiders 9 years, 10 months ago

Thanks....was that the Dayton game? We actually played Dayton and Temple in our tournament. ODU is in CAA and played VCU for the CAA championship, which ODU won. If you get by us, you'll face VCU if they get by FSU in their game. Weird that you very well may end up playing two teams from Richmond in a row. Of course, we'll do our best to make sure that doesn't happen.

Marv Albert and Steve Kerr have been great additions to calling the madness this year. I am excited to hear they will be calling the regional games for the 2011 champs. KU has just defeated the highest seed left in the region and I look forward the final four matchup with either Jimmer or the Gators. Unless as was done last year the Butler did it.

Joel Thomas 9 years, 10 months ago

I like the broadcasting team too. Though I wish they would tell you how many fouls the players have (even though that didn't end up being a factor).

Alohahawk 9 years, 10 months ago

Try running the CBS sports NCAA basketball scoreboard from the internet on your computer while watching the game on TV. Gives you all the stats for each team. Makes the games that much more enjoyable. Helps identify the involved players, when the announcers forget to mention who shot or committed a foul. Also a schematic showing each player's shot chart for the game, team shooting percentages, team rebounds. Etc.

Alohahawk 9 years, 10 months ago

I also use this as a last result, when the game isn't broadcast or streamed on the internet.

domino 9 years, 10 months ago

Seriously?? Not that impressed with them. They do ok, but a few of the things I've cringed over include the "Marcus twins" - "Robison loosing both his grandparents just a few days before the death of his mother" - "Jayla Robison moving to Lawrence to live with Angel Morris" - now maybe I missed something down the line but I thought Jayla was still with her dad? I do know that it is the Morris twins and that Robison lost his grandparents a few weeks before his mother. Granted, these are not part of "calling the game" but when you are paid the bucks these guys are, they should make sure they are correct. Not like KU was the 68th team getting into the bracket with players no one has ever heard of. I'm sure if it was a "Big Least" team they would have got it right!

Plus that Sager guy needs a new stylist! Give me Erin Rogers any day!!

Woody Cragg 9 years, 10 months ago

Sager was dressed like a flamer & I can't forget Albert gettin popped for dressing up in womens drag a few years back. Decades ago Sager was with KMBC in KC. Many of these announcers are ill prepared for this tournament, either from their own shortfall or their producers/statisticians lack of prep. ESPN crews are much more informative & colorful, with the exception of DV.

Chris Shaw 9 years, 10 months ago

That's Sager's "MoJo"! I love it! He does that in the NBA for every game! He says it makes it easier for NBA guys to find him when they need to do a quick interview during the game, right after or before halftime, and for any post game interviews. I think it's a fantastic idea! Everybody knows him when they see him! It works!

I always felt Marv is just waiting around till football season.

dylans 9 years, 10 months ago

Marv is a basketball guy er... biter.

dylans 9 years, 10 months ago

Anyone is better than Greg Gurly. Terrible

RockCaCO3 9 years, 10 months ago

If Marv Allens could get our players last names right (The Marcus Twins), I might think more of him. Steve Carr is OK.

And yes, it's intentional.

yates33333 9 years, 10 months ago

Although Kerr is better than Alpert or Albert, both talk more about themselves and other things than they do about the game. They were obviously interested in seeing Illinois rally and perhaps beat KU. The entire group of announcers on CBS are inferior to those who do the broadcasts during the regular season. One reason is that they are not very well informed about the college game. I like the group that Barkley appears with when they are doing the pros, many of whom they know. But their knowledge of the college teams is minimal at best.

In the last thirty years the players have gotten progressively better but the refereeing and the announcing increasingly worse.

Party Friday night, Jayhawk style-----YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Michael Luby 9 years, 10 months ago

The Jayhawks will be smashing some spider guts on friday. I can see it.

Funhawk 9 years, 10 months ago

"Will you walk into my parlour?" said the Spider to the Jayhawk. Smash those spiders!!

DSommersby 9 years, 10 months ago

Richmond is tough. Pitino said, "they are one of those teams that no one wanted to see in their bracket". We will have to be ready, but I am glad we have time before Friday to scout them and get prepared.

Keep the focus Hawks. Keep your eyes on the road and lets take another big step Friday!

Ksjhawk9 9 years, 10 months ago

I thought the announcers were terrible. If you were listening at all to their commentary during the game, they obviously didn't do their homework as they didn't know our players names and also said we were in the Big 10 conference. Steve Kerr acted like he had never done this before. On the flipside, I am so glad that I don't have to rely on just CBS to see the games. Glad they no longer have a monopoly on all the games.

Alohahawk 9 years, 10 months ago

Another lap completed. Another win for KU. Great game, Hawks! Congratulations.

The teams remaining against the Hawks in the Southwest (aka Upset) Region are those teams who weren't supposed to advance. Time to forget the numbers (seeds) by the names. Just remember, each of those teams was good enough to win against their higher seeded competition. Richmond has already defeated two higher seeded teams. The Spider's seeding hasn't changed, but now they have developed confidence.

The road appears easy for the Hawks, but any team that thinks that to be true is wearing blinders. Keep those blinders packed away in the bus, Coach Self. Your charges need to perceive the danger of overconfidence.

The race is 1/3 over and 48 teams have dropped out. There are 15 obstacles left in the field, left to overcome, but the Hawks only have to maneuver through 4 more. One at a time.

The Jayhawks' silks are flashing bright Crimson & Blue. The finish line is still a couple weeks (4 wins) away. Come on, Jayhawks!!!

kusayzone 9 years, 10 months ago

I agree with you about the lousy announcers...they were totally ignorant about who was in the game and how that was effecting the momentum of play. My second point is that the guy in the truck....the so called producer....choose such bad angles at times to view the game that we may as well be watching the radio....

Finally....Texas got hosed.....refs should be able to count to five at that point of the game...did we need another west coast team to help the TV market???

RockCaCO3 9 years, 10 months ago

I think the so called producer was a drama major/art major, and thought the bad camera angles "added drama" to the game or some other bs. ESPN did the same crap a few weeks ago and it sucked then too.

Albert............YES! Kerr..............Steady analysis! Sager............Needs a new wardrobe!

Martin Rosenblum 9 years, 10 months ago

Albert.......OverRated! Kerr..........Poor objectivity! Sager.......Is what he is! (rodeo clown)

Is this the best there is to follow our #1 seeded, #2 in regular season end of year ranked, Big 12 regular and Tournament champions? Albert is not effective as a college level announcer and Kerr has tendencies to dwell on subjects and points that sometimes border on bias toward or against one team.

Aren't there some NBA games they can be calling?

Tim Bingaman 9 years, 10 months ago

Marv has: - Great old school name - Unashamed Rug wearer - Likes it Kinky! (as do I) - Classic Announcer!

I say YES! to Marv Albert!

Rock Chalk Jayhawk, Beak the Spiders!!!!

Sager started his career doing the sports for one of the local KC networks..met him in Atlanta and thought he was very gracious and was very proud of his time in KC.

Jonathan Allison 9 years, 10 months ago

Wasn't it Kerr who said, "and who could even imagine this matchup between Texas A&M and Notre Dame, I mean, no one saw that coming"

Woody Cragg 9 years, 10 months ago

I watched the ODU/Richmond game in their conf tournament won by ODU (niece was a cheerleader there) & Richmond won't go away easy, but our depth will take em out for sure. They're much quicker than Illinois, whom IMO was terribly slow. Not an easy matchup at all, but as long as we get a few outside shots to fall out of necessity & not just jacking up 3's, we'll bury em in the paint. They rely on jump shooters so we have to check off picks efficienty. Man, KU had some pretty assists last night-team BB at it's best but very poorly officiated contest. Also thought the Tex Az game was awful too. JMO but officiating has waaaaaaay too much bearing on the outcome of these battles. Sure glad the awful announcing doesn't count!

Andy Rieger 9 years, 10 months ago

What time would the elite 8 game be if we a fortunate enough to beat Richmond?

Uhlrick_Hetfield_III 9 years, 10 months ago

If KU gets too cocky a team like Richmond could send them home and it would be all the more embarrassing since they now have the easiest path to the Final Four.

David Robinett 9 years, 10 months ago

KU cannot believe that it's way to the FF got easier. My recollection is that we have done better when we had to play "name" teams rather than hot tourney teams with nothing to lose.

I think it's great that we lost to Richmond at home -- so as to further cement in our guys' minds that they have to show up and never let up.

RockCaCO3 9 years, 10 months ago

We lost to Richmond in Lawrence? When was that? (not doubting you, well maybe sorta, but my memory sucks).

Michael Luby 9 years, 10 months ago

I believe it was back in 2004. So none of our current players were even there. It should still stand as a reminder to not overlook any team from this point on.

John Randall 9 years, 10 months ago

What KU needs to think about is that the opponents on Friday have more NCAA victories this year than any other team in the tournament, all against "power conference" teams, two with higher seeds.

John Randall 9 years, 10 months ago

My bad, it is VCU that beat USC in the 'First Four' game, so I guess we better play at half-speed Friday and save something for the Regional Final. That should work against a team that has never lost to Jayhawks, even in AFH . . .

milehighhawk 9 years, 10 months ago

Hopefully Marvelous Marv can figure out it's the "Morris Twins" not the "Marcus Twins" before then.

dylans 9 years, 10 months ago

Ha ha, the one that kills me is getting called K-state at some point during the game. That happens in about half of the games! Get a clue announcers KU is in blue and wins with grace and dignity.

eddiesuttonschoolofdriving 9 years, 10 months ago

Sager dresses like a "flamer"? Seriously? 21st century calling, please answer the phone.

RockCaCO3 9 years, 10 months ago

I'm lost, whats the "addiction" being made fun of?

John Randall 9 years, 10 months ago

The comment about needing a new wardrobe got it all wrong. What he needs is an OLD wardrobe –– like a few of my hand-me-downs.

kureignman 9 years, 10 months ago

I saw Richmond out in Denver. They looked more athletic than the Illini, but we should be able to beat them as long as we don't get too cocky. I think they kind of got lucky playing Morehead in the 3rd round. Not to get ahead, but I didn't watch much of either FSU or VCU. I'm not sure who I'd rather see in the next game, if we advance.

Michael Bratisax 9 years, 10 months ago

Wasn't that long ago when Richmond came into AFH and won. FOCUS!!

sf3 9 years, 10 months ago

does anyone know when the team returns to allen fieldhouse so we can go welcome them back? Thanks

John Randall 9 years, 10 months ago

Let's just hope they don't return until Sunday!

Joe Satterwhite 9 years, 10 months ago

i live in Virginia and everyones pretty hyped about the sweet sixteens but i feel even worse about how they're going to feel when KU lays into that A **

ibleedku 9 years, 10 months ago

I went back and read the article written after Richmond beat us in AFH back in 2004. I remember the game, but from what I gathered from the postgame comments, we lost because of some mistakes this current KU team also makes: lapses on the defensive end, and missed free throws. KU's D has been nice as of late, but they're going to have to sure up defensively against this Richmond team, and for the rest of the tourney if a trophy is what they really seek. I hope HCBS informs the players of that previous loss and utilizes Simien as a voice of reason to not overlook this opponent. They (Richmond) have so much to gain, while we have so much to lose. I expect the Hawks to come out focused and in attack least, that's what I'm hoping for. Rock Chalk

John Randall 9 years, 10 months ago

""" but they're going to have to sure up defensively """

I sure hope they shore up the rebounding as well.

Craig Colgin 9 years, 10 months ago

Here's some bulletin board material for you Jayhawks!! No the final four is not a given, and it's never easy. This is what can happen if you don't bring intensity into the upcoming game for 40 minutes. Prove that you are superior with you play!! ROCK CHALK!!!

SoCalAlum 9 years, 10 months ago

Their coach at that time (I'm pretty sure) was Jerry Wainwright who then moved on to Depaul, where his Depaul team subsequently beat KU there (maybe 2007...I think it was scheduled as a game in Chicago for JuJu); Depaul was led by future NBA-er Wilson Chandler. Richmond has different coach now and runs a variant of Princeton offense. I know it goes against Coach Self's core man-to-man principles, but he should go zone and let the Spiders run around and then run into our bigs.

Craig Colgin 9 years, 10 months ago

That's what the princeton offense does. They make you play D for 30 seconds on every possession while they wear ya down and then they get an easy bucket on a backdoor cut, or a mismatch with a switched screen. It's problematic for lots of teams as the game goes on you start to feel like that's all you're doing is playing defense. And, it limits the possessions for both teams which is usually more of a problem for a team with a more highpowered offense because they then start to feel the pressure to score on each possession, and to try to speed the game up so that they get more chances to score. This only works if you are effecient, which we know KU can be. Unfortunately we have also seen that they can be sloppy. This system presented itself as huge setback for Bill Self in his first 5 years at Kansas, but he has since found some ways to beat the tempo and defensive strain of defending the princeton style. It doesn't always work though. Patience in the offense is key, sloppiness breeds ineffeciency. Im sure we will play as good as we have been on defense and that Richmond will still hit their fair share of threes, we won't hit as many as they do probably. We may not even shoot as many as they make. The way to equalize that is to take advantage of their turnovers and turn them into easy transition buckets, and take care of the ball on our end limiting our turnovers and their chances at more 30 second clock using possessions.

The announcers are ok, Charles Barkley is great add. His dis to Pitino (while he was there) about the big least was great. Love how he just speaks his mind

John Randall 9 years, 10 months ago

Barkley makes some funny, even pertinent, comments –– about one in every three or four on average.

Not everyone would agree a 'mind' is generating whatever comes out . . .
