KU women to host Wichita State in WNIT at 7 p.m. Wednesday

Kansas University officials announced late Monday night that the school’s women’s basketball program had been selected to play in the Women’s NIT for the fourth consecutive season and the fifth time in the last six years.

The Jayhawks, who finished the season 20-12 and were ousted by national-title contender Baylor in the second round of the Big 12 Tournament last week in Kansas City, Mo., will play host to Wichita State at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Allen Fieldhouse.

The WNIT appearance is KU’s fifth under head coach Bonnie Henrickson, who is in her seventh year with the school. It marks the 21st time in school history that KU has advanced to the postseason.

After reaching the WNIT title game in 2009, the Jayhawks went 2-1 last season, picking up victories over Prairie View A&M; and Creighton before falling at Illinois State in the third round.

The Jayhawks earned the Big 12 Conference’s automatic bid to the WNIT despite finishing just 6-10 in league play.

KU was led by all-Big 12 first-team selection Carolyn Davis, a sophomore forward, who averaged 18 points and 7.2 rebounds per game. Davis was backed by sophomore guard Monica Engelman (12.1 ppg) and junior forward Aishah Sutherland, (8.8 ppg) and a team-leading 7.5 rebounds per game.

Wichita State enters Wednesday’s game at 17-14. The Shockers finished fifth in the Missouri Valley Conference this season and were knocked off by Northern Iowa in the semifinals of the conference tournament. Wichita State is coached by Jody Adams and led by Haleigh Lankster (13.3 ppg) and Jessica Diamond (9.4 ppg).

Making the NIT 5 of 7 years is awful. Is this the end of the Bonnie era?

"Making" the WNIT is sort of a misnomer. No no. You fall into the WNIT.

Don't get it twisted. KU "Fell" into the WNIT, 5 out of 7 years. The other 2 years they failed to make any tournament at all.

I'll just keep naming them.

Duke, UNC, Kentucky, UCLA. The blue-bloods. All are parlaying men's success into women's success. KU is like the ugly step-sister of women's basketball.

I love all the players. I just question the leadership of the coaches and ADs.

If you are a Big 12 basketball coach for seven years without making the NCAA tournament, you need to be replaced.

By the way, the "high paid coach" at Texas is going BACK to the Big Dance for the fourth straight year. Texas Tech has lead her team to the Big Dance after 5 seasons.

KU WNIT bound after 7 seasons. Carry on.

GG shouldn't have made it in but of course we failed to win when it mattered so UT got in.

Cody Stumma 8 years, 8 months ago

Well... we didn't want this tournament, but we got it. So now win it girls, starting with beating Wichita State, let's go!

KGphoto 8 years, 8 months ago

Noooooo!! If they win it, Bonnie will likely stay another year, and the WNIT will become the gold standard of women's basketball at KU. That sucks.

Cody Stumma 8 years, 8 months ago

I never said that it is the gold standard. If anything, it's the consolation prize. But I still want the women (I'm supporting the team, not the coach) to do well.

By supporting the team, you are supporting the coach. Which would be an awful thing to still do. We need to root against this team every game until she is removed. It's the only way.

Wrong! Her body of work speaks for itself and any reasonable AD (I hope we now have one) will not look at victories in the WNIT and say "Wow, what a great coach". These girls are representing KU and they need and should have our support. For all the time and sacrifice they have put in, they deserve it.

BTW why is it that we hate KState and Missouri in men's basketball and football, but we don't seem to mind getting spanked by KState in women's bball twice this year, and once against mizzou?

In men's basketball that would be grounds for a firing.

I feel bad for the girls. I know they are disappointed because they know they are way better than the WNIT. And KGPhoto is right they didn't make the tournament "they fell into it." Shame on Bonnie for thinking mediocrity is okay and then forcing the girls to accept it. I mean even if they win the whole thing, what have they really won? Table scraps that's all.

This team is so much better than sloppy seconds. WNIT is okay for some but not KU. You don't get to brag about this one, Bonnie. Hold your head up, ladies. It's not your fault.

With the current leadership at hand....doubt the NCAA Tournament would be a reality, nevertheless the norm for KU Womens BBall. Take some notes from the Mens program, better yet get some coaches from the mens program !

Congrats Ladies, job well done tonight @ AFH. Come on Lawrence, go out and support the ladies Saturday night when they play the winner of Kent St. and Duquesne. Small crowd tonight--too small even for Lawrence folk & women's ball. Get out and support the Ladies!!!! Go KU!
