San Diego State’s Steve Fisher unhappy in losing recruit

Coach angered by Kevin Young’s switch to Kansas

San Diego State basketball coach Steve Fisher was not a happy camper Friday upon learning prize Aztec recruit Kevin Young had decided to switch his commitment to Kansas University.

“I’m disappointed that a young man who I am very fond of would not feel an obligation to honor an eight-month commitment,” Fisher told the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Young, a 6-foot-8, 215-pound forward who played two years at Loyola Marymount before taking classes at Barstow Community College last school year, signed a financial aid agreement with SDSU in November. He ultimately changed his mind and elected to play his final two seasons at KU.

“And I’m equally disappointed in a program and coach I’m very fond of to pursue a player who made an eight-month commitment,” Fisher added.

He, of course, was referring to ninth-year KU coach Bill Self, who issued his take on the situation Saturday in an interview with the Journal-World.

“I don’t blame coach Fisher for being disappointed at all because Kevin did commit to them,” Self said, “but Kevin also told them he wasn’t going to San Diego State before we recruited him, so we didn’t steal him from San Diego State by any stretch.

“We would not have recruited Kevin if he was committed to San Diego State. He did de-commit from them before we pursued him at all. We did not recruit him until after he de-committed,” KU’s coach stressed.

San Diego State, which is in rebuilding mode after losing several players off last year’s Sweet 16 team, currently has eight scholarship players to KU’s 11. The maximum is 13.

“Unfortunately, the only people who suffer in this situation is us because we passed over three or four very talented players because we did honor our commitment (to Young),” Fisher told the Union-Tribune.

Financial aid agreements bind a school to a player, but not a player to a school. Young could not sign a national letter of intent with SDSU in November because players can sign just one letter in their college careers. Young has signed a financial aid agreement with KU and is enrolled in summer school.

“It (SDSU) is a great school as well,” Young told the J-W. “There’s nothing they did wrong or anything that made me change my mind. I just figure this is a bigger stage and a lot more opportunity.”

Huge Jayhawk fan here; born and raised in Kansas but now in California. Reading between the lines..... Possible that KU got wind that Young might be interested if approached. Assistant Townsend checks with him and when Young says that he is, Townsend says to make sure to tell Fisher that he is de-committing. Young keeps options open and SDSU staff finds out about the visit from someone else shortly before he gets on the plane.

I don't blame Fisher for being angry. Kid owed him the courtesy about being upfront earlier in the process. If tables were turned there would be a lot of *&^^ed off KU fans.

I have gone to several games at SDSU. Fun atmosphere and Fisher is a great coach for kids to play for. There has been no hint of scandal at SDSU and I root for them unless they were playing the 'Hawks. Recruiting can be a tough game and when you struggle to recruit at times (SDSU), it can be even tougher.

The signs point to Perry brokering the deal between KY and KU prior to any de-commitment. I'll paraphrase another poster. Why would a de-committed player call his old coach to tell him about a recruiting trip? Combine that along with the article that I posted and your second article, and you're probably smart enough to connect the dots.

The first link you posted is older and doesn't add any information.

Other papers/writers seem more objective.

Interestingly, your article points out that "Young’s AAU coach, Elvert “Kool-Aid” Perry, is believed to have been influential in the decision behind the switch." Given a 100 players:1 coach/school ratio in the recruiting world, it may be possible that Young's AAU coach Perry told him about KU?

Look, for those of you who haven't read my other posts, let me make myself clear. I don't think Self did anything wrong here. I believe Marchphog88's scenarios are entirely possible. Somehow, KY got word that KU was an option. Only after he informed SDSU that he was not attending, did KU offer him a scholly. (Just for the record, Marchphog88, de commit is the word Self used so I don't understand your need to clarify that KY wasn't bound by his financial aid offer. That is obvious by the fact that he left without penalty) All this being said, I agree entirely that Fisher is being a whiner and misleading. To insinuate that he passed on other big time recruits while only having 9 players under scholarship is pathetic. All it did was incite the SDSU fan base to bitch and moan. Oh, and globaljaybird, you're still a fool.

Perhaps a little late to the party, but best I can tell there is one issue that hasn't been mentioned yet. To the pos(t)er that claims to be a fan of both KU and SDSU - time for a reality check. It is not possible. You can only have one true love (outside of Utah.) Sure you can have an interest in both teams. You can even root for another team - based on your current locale, a coach/player you like, or the pretty team colors. But that doesn't make that YOUR team.

You need to stop this before someone gets hurt. These things never end well. The late night online messages. The secret videos. Ask yourself this: what happens when some cold rainy day in March, both lovers unexpectedly meet. Does anyone truly win? Even with the one that remains, are you thinking of the one that is gone? Somewhere, an Aztec or a Jayhawk is whispering: "When you close your eyes, Do you dream about me. When you close your big brown eyes, do you dream about me?

Pick one. Quit leading on the other - it's not fair to them. It's not fair to you. Consider this your intervention.

Breaking News, this just in:

Countless #'s of you newbie Californie posters have just come on this site since this non-story became huge news to you. No one has any use for the crybabies, so no one at home will respond...I understand, it's the lack of attention syndrome. It's quite similar to the lack of nooky syndrome. It's OK, you can come out of the closet anytime you like, even if you take the Diceman's 25% discount on lubricant.

You can do as you wish, after all you live in the great state of The Kardashians (porn) & Arnold (adultery) & legal (pot) drug dealers: basically, trash with money, even if it is bankrupt. So, the brilliance award goes to... bittera$$tec! He uncovered the big scoop. KY contacted Townsend. May I say on behalf of myself & countless others, no one really shives a git. Go back home to genius land & surf, or snort, or just get back in the friggin' closet. You are no longer (story in the middle of Summer?) copy so please go away. Thanks. No malice intended, just bull hockey!

bitteraztec, So you are pointing out that a KU asst coach (Townsend) told Young to "talk to Coach Fisher at SDSU" before he would go on about KU...Sounds like Townsend did the ethical thing, making Young display the proper courtesy to Fisher...enough already!

And why would you be "bitter" about an unranked recruit? Its not like we are talking about Deandre Daniels (who KU just "lost" like Texas did). What does it really matter to the SDSU fans? This particular kid. Tell me why this matters, because the ethics think is a non-workable argument.

0

Do Jayhawks eat Crow?

“Around the end of May I talked to (KU assistant) coach (Kurtis) Townsend and let him know I was interested in coming," Young said, "and before he went on he made sure I talked to Coach Fisher at San Diego State. He wanted to make sure they knew I was planning on taking a visit out here. They weren’t real happy about it, but I went ahead and came out here.”

I don't think Fischer has two much of a right to be upset. He had one "good" (in my opinion extremely overrated) year and he tries to go after the same recruits KU is shooting for. If KU has a plausable spot and a scholorship for someone they would hardly even think about a program like SDSU.

0

martyks 2 years, 10 months ago

Steve Fisher has always been a whiner and a jerk. We did nothing wrong. This guy probably throws a hissy fit when his shorts bunch up on him. He needs his mommy. I'm wondering if somebody held him while he softly sobbed and told his story to the press. Poor poor man. Did mean Bill Self come steal your recruit? Don't worry Stevey... We'll tell that bad man to leave you alone.

All the violations that went on at Michigan and Fisher is talking morals, wow that one takes the cake. SDS was a one year wonder anyway. This year they will suck you watch and see.

Sam Constance 2 years, 10 months ago

Something that continues to be missed here is that "de-committed" is a meaningless term for Kevin Young. An NCAA athlete can only "de-commit" one time, from the school with which he originally signed a LOI. For Young, that school was LMU, and he never "de-committed", he decided to transfer.

For SDSU, Young never had any kind of binding agreement from which to "de-commit". Knowing that, it's not insane to think that Young, seeing that a big-time, TV-appearance school has been OBVIOUSLY looking for more talented bigs would be aware of that and initiate contact with KU to see if he would fit what they were looking for. At that point, Self would have to make a choice--tell the kid, we can't talk until you officially leave SDSU, which might have been all Young needed to hear to pull the trigger. Or he tells the kid that KU is interested, seeing the writing on the wall that Young wants to leave SDSU but doesn't want to get left in the lurch by leaving and not having a place to go. Either way, I don't think you can classify what happened as SElf "stealing" Young from SDSU, which is what Fisher clearly wants people to believe.

I think what most KU fans are bristling at is this notion (that Fisher decided to spread) that Self went up to Kevin Young and recruited him AWAY from SDSU. I think the scenario above is far more likely. There is also the possibility that Young decided to leave after a certain assistant coach left, figuring that he would find a place to play one way or the other. It seems premature to claim that Young only left because he had a spot waiting at KU.

I've said it before & I'll say it again, "some people have something to say, and some people have to say something." Is appropriate several days weekly on this site & it's not hard to differerentiate the two.

0

Woody Cragg 2 years, 10 months ago

add lime...so he had to know KU was an option...Ya think it's a mystery that we have available playing time after losing 5 plus starters? Or that is costs less to go to school here than in wonderland, or the kid had tarot cards or a genie? What's the bitch anyway? Fish should've just said good luck & move on instead of point fingers at a coaching staff that dilligently tries to do things the right way & stir up crap like he's never done anything at all that's questionable. Why can't people take HCBS's word on this? I'll tell you why-because there are SD people posting on this site that are crying just like Fish, and others just have to take sides. After all everyone loves a winner, don't they? It's all horse manure & like JB said, you've all been watching way too much CSI & NCIS. As for the 25 yr thing, many posters out here have followed KUBB for over twice that long, so a little more restraint & respect goes alot further than road rage. Just let it go.

I have a question for all you brilliant fans out there. Does anyone know how Self found out Kevin decommited from San Diego State? Did he call Self, did a family member or did a KU person contact him? Just wondering....

0

addlime 2 years, 10 months ago

Jaybate and others- I have to say, I'm pretty amazed at my fellow KU fans here. Kevin Young said himself, “There’s nothing they did wrong or anything that made me change my mind. I just figure this is a bigger stage and a lot more opportunity.” Now think about this KU fans, how did Kevin Young know that this bigger stage and opportunity were an option? He wouldn't de commit from SDSU without some idea that he could get a scholly at KU. He is saying himself that he didn't de commit because of SDSU, so he had to know KU was an option. Come on Jayhawkers, don't be so naive. And don't any of you suddenly call me a troll or tell me I'm not a fan. I read this damn web page like the rest of you every single day and have lived and died with this team for over 25 years.

... San Diego wins, hands down, as the preferred surfing location...As a kid I spent a summer in SD in the early 60's. The water was clean enough to enjoy then. I wouldn't get in it for anything now-you can float on the scum & trash without a board. And is still like freakin' ice water. Have been all the way to Cabo diving and you freeze your cajones off everywhere on the Pacific side of the US coast. Watersports belong in warm climates guys, not in the ice machine, unless that's your personal "thing". Hard to even find it in the Pacific- tendancy to turn blue & look like a belly button. No malice.

So a young man changed his mind... is this news?

He had the right to leave, there was nothing binding him to SDSU. As all of us know, the college recruiting scene changes by the second.

I'm sure Fisher and SDSU are unhappy, just like we have been before when we lose a vital recruit. But going on the attack of KU is uncalled for. Fisher would do the same thing to KU if he could. Perhaps he is frustrated because he can't.

I remember the Michigan days and Fisher is no choir boy!

As for some of the comments in here... San Diego wins, hands down, as the preferred surfing location. College basketball, the nod goes to Lawrence. No problem. We have our basketball culture and they have their surfing culture... no need to slam either. This is America... where variety runs rampant over this vast land. Everyone can go where they want to pursue their dreams, and should. And if you don't do that, stop complaining to others because you won't put out the risk.

End of story. We have to prepare for the next pleasant recruiting surprise! I still believe we are looking to fill one more spot!

Steve, let me pass along this little tidbit that helped me get through my sophomore year of high school. I had been in hot pursuit of the head cheerleader who, to this day, still does not know my name or that I even exist. A wise older prophet ( probably 17 or 18 ! ) offered up words that I have never forgotten....." DUDE. Why would you want to be with someone who doesn't want to be with YOU? "

Let him go Steve. Let him go.

I am pretty excited Self landed Kevin Young for a couple reasons.

Young gives Self an experienced big inside should Withey flounder. Even if freshmen Jamari Traylor and Braedon Anderson can bang some their first seasons, it is reassuring to have some one with some experience on the blocks in case of problems, or injuries inside.

Next, Young, at 6'8 and 215, also looks like a guy who swing to the 3 and guard XTReme Long and Athletics on the perimeter, guys like Deandre Daniels at UConn.

So: Young allows Self to go big at the 3 situationally, and get experienced and mobile at the 4; this is huge for Self's play it any way they want philosophy.

Self has already compared Young to Julian Wright, which suggests Young may be more mobile and explosive at the 4 than Marcus Morris was, though probably not nearly as accomplished and versatile in the beginning as Marcus became. It also may be code for no trey.

The black cloud to this silver lining?

Young seems to see himself as 2/3 player, not as a 4, and might bridle at life on the blocks, especially if he refuses to Hudy up to at least 225.

Self has a history of putting long and athletic guys (LAGs) that view themselves as 3s at the 4, unless they can drain treys at 40% plus. He also has a history of saying such LAGs might play some 3, when KU wants to go big outside, but then rarely playing them there.

BRush exemplified the kind of LAG that gets to be a 3 for Self. He shot 43% from trey, so despite being big and strong enough to go mix it up inside with the bigs, BRush got permanently stationed at the 3.

Wayne Simien, Julian Wright, Marcus Morris, and Mario Little exemplify LAGs that had the mobility for the perimeter game at the 3, but lacked the trifectation rate Self required.

Even Travis Releford has been sent to the 4 part time as a swing man, because Travis has not yet proven himself a better three point shooter than his competition at the 3.

How will Kevin Young adapt to playing mostly 4 for Self...maybe exclusively the 4, if Jeff Withey flames out?

Hopefully, Young will will look back at Simien, Wright and Morris having been in similar positions, having played the 4, and having been drafted high by the L and say, "Hey, if that's what it takes, let's do it."

Or perhaps he will develop a 40% trey gun.

Either way, it looks like we've got someone to put on Deandre Daniels, if/when we run into UConn next.

SDSurferfan, It looks like you took some beating today, and all I have to say is "what were you thinking?!" You decided to take your colorful surf board & dive right into the Jayhawk Ocean with nets full of sardines where the dolphins, sharks & whales (Jaybate?) roam! And you found some friendly dolphins, a**chewing sharks & got water shooting/ spewing whales to chase your sorry butt out of the ocean. So the next time you decide to dive into - any ocean - be a WISE surfer. Capice?

I'm amazed at how gracious most of the KU fans on here have been to SDSurferFan, given the content of some of his posts.

Jabs about KU's supposedly shady recruiting, losing to mid-majors, not having as many titles in the last however many years as other powerhouses, and the coup d'etat--a "geographical warfare" classic--talking about going surfing in California as compared to lowly Clinton Lake

He must have some past history of great courtesy and respect, as well as insightful comments and observations, because that is the only explanation I would comprehend for treating this guy who is clearly just flaming out of frustration with such courtesy. And then he still has the cajones to say how he doesn't like KU fans because of their attitudes.

@SDSurferFan:

if you are still reading and not out surfing and enjoying the sights and 70 degree weather, a bit of advice. Maybe next time a bit more thought should go into your intentions before coming to a thread to post in anger or frustration. Because regardless of your original reasons, all you have succeeded in doing for those of us who aren't familiar with your apparently respected posting history is making yourself look like a grade-A dick.

I've got to reiterate here, Fisher only said what he said to cover his ass. Don't get me wrong, I'm a 'hawk through and through, but I'm not going to get worked up at the guy over some ostensibly cheap-shot comment. Fisher and SDSU fans have every reason to be a little butt-hurt that a promising transfer would back out at the last second, but he and they know every bit as well that KY and HCBS didn't do anything wrong: morally, ethically, legally, this was all above board.

Of course, when Fisher doesn't have a great season next year, he'll have to answer for the down recruiting year. A comment like this on his inability to stay with a recruit is just his way of covering his ass when his AD and alumni complain that he didn't pass out all his rides. He can play the victim. "How can I recruit anyone when Bill Self and the Jayhawks are just ripping these kids out of my grip?" It's weak sauce, but it's a distraction, so nobody should let it bother them. It won't reflect poorly on Self, the school, or the fans. The only person who should be embarrassed by such a chintzy cop-out is Fisher himself.

0

Dan Cook 2 years, 10 months ago

Possibly I've missed it, but the real story here for SDSU fans is that former Assistant Coach and Recruiting Director Justin Hutson at SDSU left for UNLV in April. He's the one that recruited Kevin Young and he's the overwhelming reason Young committed to SDSU. After losing that connection to SDSU, Young didn't plan on going to SDSU if anything as good or better developed.

It's not unusual at all for a recruit to switch his commitment when the coach that recruits him leaves. That's all that happened here, so the conspiracy theories are way off base.

SDSurferFan- What it all comes down to for me, Who has a reason to lie and who has a track record that would most probably lead TO Lying, because someone IS lying here.

KY - ( I think Kentucky everytime I see it, Will have to De-program. ) BY all accounts a stand-up player who could not sign a LOI, because the NCAA is more outdated than Confederate currency.

Self - By all accounts a respected member of the Coaching fraternity, who has twice been punished for violations in his program ( once before Self signed on the dotted line, and the other time because he brought in a kid who had questionable dealings with a Professional player, and an agent. ) that he has no culpability too.

Fisher - By all accountants a respectable coach who HAS lost seasons due to Chris Webber's taking money while a player under Fisher. No one has implied Fisher lied in knowing about Webber's situation, but no one has come forward really defending Fisher's institutional control either.

What we have, is two individuals who stand together in their stories ( Self and Young ) and the "least" Honest man in appearance hinting at Collusion.

I'm not trying to drag Fisher's name through the Mud here, just pointing out facts. SDSU had no viable hold on Young, Young's commitment was only Financial aid agreements, which can be amended at any time.

Without changing the rules on LOI, Fisher has no real gripe here.... But he does anyway. This is not Kelvin sampson recruiting Eric Gordon out of his Verbal Commitment to Illinois to come to Indiana ( which is STILL LEGAL just not well respected in coaching circles ).

Im from Sunny San Diego CA, but now live in kansas for the past 7 years, so im a little in the middle on this. First of all this article is not accurate at all to the truth of this story. It's true Kevin Young told them he decomitted from his financial aid agreement before he was officially recruited by kansas, but does a few days before he goes out to KS count.... come on let's be for real. So yes coach Fish has a right to be upset because KY had plans to come out to KU before he told the coaches at SDSU. I have people on the inside at the sdsu athletic dept. so i know what the deal is. So fish does have a right to be mad bc this process was unofficially going on before kevin young had decomitted from SDSU. If people are so nieve to see that , than they're full of themselves. As to KU fans im just upset that most of you are so ignorant of the KU, mystique... Your not better than everybody else, just in kansas compared to california theres not to much to do other than sports. So you have a greater following than sdsu, bc there is a lot to choose from out there. Don't be so simple minded and just open your mind to the possibility that your coach isn't as innocent as you make him out to be,,,,,,

SDSurferfan: Rough day, I see .. just read the thread. Don't take some of the stuff personally .. I always enjoy your posts and observations.

Nasty business, this recruiting. We want our coach to follow the rules, be ethical and win the NC. We certainly have gotten all of that from coach Self -- the ethical part is not perfection, but excellent relative to the competition. We also want him to compete and make our team better when he has the opportunity.

I don't cry any tears for Fisher .. Fisher knew this kid could change his mind at anytime. It is a risk. He said he passed on other kids waiting for Young .. but he has scholarships open. He was unwise to be so trusting of the commitment, with open scholarships. He left himself open. Sounds like he .. SDSU .. basically told kids "no" because of Young. Tough spot because if he brings a kid in to compete with Young, he may have lost Young because of that. But that's the game, and that's the risk.

I understand why Fisher might a bit upset.

But I'm glad our coach competes for what we need. And I'm glad we have another option at the 4 spot heading into this season.

And the SD KU fans on here .. can we forget all this ever happened?

Let's see.... DD disappoints KU, Young disappoints SDSU...

I feel we have an obligation to make things right with SDSU, so....

We now officially divorce DD and formally announce that he is open season for SDSU to steal away from UCONN. After all, UCONN is the silent beneficiary out of all of this.

Fisher can vent his frustration by taking on Calhoun for DD's services, which, by the way, could still change since he wasn't able to sign a LOI and probably won't attend classes until the fall. There is nothing there to prevent DD from another change.

Hey, DD... you sure you will like moving from Florida up to the freezing state of Connecticut? San Diego has a climate more to your liking! Think about it...

Don't hold your breath, Jayhawk fans, but we may not be done yet. I still feel like the right deal could happen and we still may land one more solid player.

Not difficult to interprit Coach Fisher's comments. He is covering his tail with the sports media in SoCal. Also, plays to the future by hoping to give Self some "yips" before coming back into area in the future or moving on a player he has his hooks into, particularly in California. A coach complains to a referree, not about the current call, but hoping to get the nod on the next close one. Self was smart to publicly address the allegation. Coach Fisher needs to stick to trying to beat HCBS on the court, as he is out of league taking him on with the media.

This "Young" man must be quite a steal!!!!!

All very entertaining. I'll be rooting for KY and the rest of Jawhawks next year. I'll be in Maui in Nov. I will see most of their games on NAT tv.

AND.... I will enjoy reading the sky is falling comments and all the expert takes. It will be fun to see a strong season, conf title, and it will suck to see another early than expected NCAA exit.

SDSU will be lucky to make the NIT next year but will be watching the final four from the same place as you and KU. The living room.

Kansas fan out here in San Diego. Let me state that anyone who doesn’t think there wasn’t a deal in place for Young to transfer to Kansas before he de-committed from SDSU is a complete fool. It wasn’t official but the wink-wink and nudge-nudge were definitely given.

Who cares if Self tampered. The NCAA won’t investigate something like this, they never do. Who cares what Fisher thinks and about his past at Michigan. He’s proven to be a good coach at SDSU and built a good program there. Any program and their fans should feel a sting and be upset if a player commits there, signs a financial aid agreement and then without notice ends up at another school. We should just be happy it didn’t happen to us because it could some day, probably more likely in football though. I think that tells you more about the recruit and the people around him. Obviously, all kids want to play at the top level and the more historic programs but something seems fishy with this kid.

We should be paying more attention to Young. He attended LMU and was a good player for them in the WCC. Withey would probably be a 1st Team or at the very least 2nd Team All-Conference selection in that league. Young chooses to transfer to SDSU where due to graduation and a weak recruiting class (saving scholarships for the better 2012 recruiting class) he has the opportunity to compete for a starting position. It’s not like he was going in there to be the man and might not even have started. All indications also point that he probably wouldn’t start for them in 2012. He would just be added depth. Then, given our lack of depth and inability to land better recruits we find a guy to help with our depth that officially isn’t stuck with the school he committed too.

So we ended up stealing a recruit from SDSU who was only going to be a bench guy for them who previously had some decent years for LMU in the WCC. At least we are only stuck with this kid for 2 years and hopefully he doesn’t become a problem off the court. Actually, will this guy even be here for his 2nd year?

Wow. Next year's recruiting class is suddenly shaping up very nicely.

We are one John Calipari move away from Self hitting a grand slam....

I'm wondering which non-professional big man we should put on scholarship?

  1. Dirk Notwinski

  2. Cole Aldrich

  3. Nick Collison

  4. Enes Kanter

  5. Shaquile O'neil

  6. Dwight Howard (he still has 4 years of college remaining & has already been in a commercial wearing a Kansas uniform).

.... Now we only have two more roster spots, so Self will have to be quite picky on these 6 recruits.

Finding it's more fun being a gnat/troll than just giving comments. Need to change my post name to SFSurferTroll.

I'll root for KY, comments were warranted by Fisher. But I can see all your points. How dare he talk about BS that way. Shouldn't be upset. He should bow down to a much superior program. As KU should do to Uconn, Duke.

Last 15 yr NAT titles: Duke, 4, conf titles- who cares? Uconn- 3, conf titles- who cares? UNC, 3, conf titles- who cares? ku- 1, conf titles- who cares? SDSU- 0, conf titles- who cares? SDSU is only one behind ku. We are almost there. ku has another 40 years at this rate to catch up to the more successful programs. It's about NCAA titles!

Don't take my non replies the rest of the day/week/month as not caring. We are fair weather fans here in SD. I'll be at the beach enjoying 70 degree weather and the visuals that comes with it. Have fun at Clinton Lake and the joys that comes with summer in the Midwest.

Happy Fathers Day to all you fathers out there! (By all, I mean the ones that actively participate in their children's lives, not the boys who donate DNA and then pass on parenting duties to the momma's) On the Fisher/Political talk I'd like to remind all you fans of whatever team it may be that you root for-- I love cookies and you should to! They are tasty! Commence discussion.... Happy Fathers Day and Rock Chalk!

Steven Fisher isn't bitter or anything. This is all just a smoke screen. He knows the game and he's playing his part. Any one with half a brain knows what he says doesn't jibe. If he had 5 schollies open, why pass on 3 or 4 really good guys to land KY? Can't you have them all?

Fact of the matter is Fisher, like us, had a down recruiting year, and to lose one of his promising transfers at the 11th hour can only make that sting worse. He knows he doesn't have the depth or the talent to follow up on last year's success the way his AD and alumni are expecting. What is he supposed to say to them when he starts getting phone calls?

Fisher's comments in this story are just his way of covering his own ass for failing to do his job on the recruiting circuit. He knows full well that HCBS and KY didn't do anything sleazy, unethical, or immoral. The kid just changed his mind. Fisher's blaming everyone else so that he doesn't have to take the heat if he's not able to put together a compelling squad for next season.

SDSurferFan, obviously the smog of southern California has had a detrimental impact on your thinking and logic, to even begin to fix your fingers, needless to say your lips, to imply that SDSU basketball or its fans are comparable to KU/AFH and its basketball fans is pure folly. Yes, most of us listened to what broadcasters had to say last year; AFH was voted the best place in the country to play and view basketball and I don't even remember SDSU being on the list. Please get real.
And, I totally agree with you blackhawkjayhawk; this is a basketball site and there are other places to discuss political issues, whether you are a liberal or a right wing religious conservative.

SDSurfer Fan is a little gnat that is whining and complaining about a far superior program getting a good recruit. Gee....whast a tough descision for this kid.....Hmmmm.....let's see .......there's Kansas....5 National Titles, countless conference titles,2nd most wins in NCAA history, etc, etc, etc. And then there is SDSU.......hmmmm.....well....actaually nothing comes to mind except a pathetic attempt at a basketball program. Gee.....which school should he choose.....hmmmmmm????

I won't bash SDSU...because, like most KU fans, I don't give a crap about them. Honestly, prior to last year's solid team, I had no idea Fisher was even there (did I spell that right?). Theend's crazy political nonsense aside, this does sound a little of sour grapes.

SDSurferFan 2 years, 10 months ago

Jay-bater. Give it a rest. We all know you know everything and you hate Fisher.

Who has more violations/suspensions the last 10 years. SDSU or ku?

I will always love KU bball, but my opinion of their fans has changed. Selby, X, Sherron, DD reactions included.

0

blackhawkjayhawk 2 years, 10 months ago

Hey, I'm a liberal - proud of it and I don't talk about it on this board. Theend has posted the whiniest comment today, whining about liberals. Let's stick to sports - KU in particular - there are plenty of other places to post political.....Rock Chalk Jayhawk!

Memo to Steve Fisher:

Did you want Coach Self to collude in a black listing of Kevin Young for de-committing to you and SDSU?

Say it ain't so, Steve.

Say you don't participate in, and don't want other coaches to participate in, collusion to black list players for de-commiting.

The NCAA might frown on collusion to black list players for de-commiting.

Get off Fisher for something he didn't do 20 years ago. He has been at SDSU for 10+ years and a majority of his years he was on campus begging kids to come to games. He has been nothing but great at SDSU and has brought a program back from the dead. Just because he calls out his disappointment, respectfully I might add, a handful of 'holier than thou' ku fans are bashing him. lame. Both sides to a story, but he did plan on going to SDSU and now he's going to ku. Self is a bit off in his comments. As an SDSU alum and a diehard KU fan I'm over it. it's recruiting. SDSU does not reload they have to rebuild, KU the opposite. KU was more than disappointed that they lost DD to Uconn. So was SDSU. The reaction is just so much different. A good majority of u were bummed but wished him well. That to me is a great ku fan. The others act like spoiled 11 year olds.

Lastly, I have been to AFH and SDSUs arena several times over the last 5 years. AFH is amazing and always will be. SDSUs atmosphere and energy rivaled and beat AFHs last year. Many tv guys who had been at both and have commented on how amazing the crowd is at SDSU. It is a great place to play and go to school. There is also a giant difference on climate and coeds. Don't get butthurt KU fans and please dont act like UK fans. ROCK CHALK AZTECS!

Sorry Fisher.....that's life. Deal with it. Hey Fisher......I got more bad news for you.......there are no unicorns nor leprechans either........and you don't always see rainbows in the sky. What was KU supposed to do......just be a "nice guy" and not go after recruits aggresively?

And gee.....what a shock....... a recruit chooses Kansas over San Diego State......there's a tough choice!

Anytime I hear the word "fair".....My radar engages......usually that means success is being taxed or stolen away.

I wonder if Fisher is a big Liberal......maybe he thinks every game should end in a tie.....wouldn't that be "fair"????

Let's review:

Point guard: Taylor, Naadir, Roberts, Garrett Shooting Guard: Johnson, McLemore, Teahan, Juenemann Wingman: Releford, Young Power Forward: Robinson, Wesley, Traylor. Center: Withey, Anderson

HCBS will obviously play numerous combinations based on opponent, injuries, individual player effectiveness, etc.

However, I sure wish we had another "Big" Big to insert in the middle. As unbelievable as it might sound, Jeff Withey may be the key to whether this will be a reloading season or a rebuilding season.

I choose to listen to my heart and not my head and say, I think Jeff will be a force!!

Sure he's disappointed. Fisher's clean as a lug nut on a rusty pick up. Ask Bob Knight. It's likely he'd give you the scoop on Steve from their days in the Big 10. A pig in a white shirt & tie is really still just a pig.

Dear Steve, I am "disappointed" with your public whining, and I am "equally disappointed" in your blaming others for your own shortcomings. I'm "even more disappointed" you contacted Santa Claus to request Santa withhold gifts this year from KY and the KU men's basketball staff. Shame on you. I'm "really disappointed", Steve. njjayhawk

"... but Kevin had also told them he wasn't going to San Diego State before we recruited him,..." Key word, "before", in Self's statement. If true, Fisher shouldn't complain. That is the nature of the recruiting game. Fisher can voice his disappointment, but he shouldn't point fingers. The athlete has exercised his right to freedom of choice.

Under different circumstances, however, I remember when Slimeball Calipari called T. Jones immediately after Jones had announced his college choice (Washington, if I remember correctly.) That leaves one with a huge question: Why would a recruit make a complete fool of themselves on the publice airwaves? Was there some hidden shenanigan (payola) involved

It's always been considered a courtesy to the recruit, as well as to the selected school, that once a recruit announces his/her decision, they are considered offlimits. Of course, when has Cal ever fit that description?

So if SDSU only has 8 scholarship players now, how could they have passed on three other players to keep their committment to Kevin Young as Coach Fisher claims?.

Nice to know the true story.

Hopefully the San Diego papers can report the truth now instead of leaving yesterday's Fisher quote dangling out there to be the last word on this matter.

Fisher is mad about recruiting? Seriously? What the hell was he doing at Michigan all those years? Taking the best recruits. All is fair Fish... and stop being naive. KU or SDSU? Really?

0

Steve Gantz 2 years, 10 months ago

Sorry coach Fisher, but San Diego St. vs. KU is a no brainer for just about any kid. As the article stated Self didn't do anything wrong.
As for Young, let's hope his maturity and experience help out in the next couple of years.
