KUsports.com recognized by sports editors’ group as one of the top sports websites nationally

KUsports.com was recognized this week as one of the top 10 sports sites in the country by the Associated Press Sports Editors.

The award recognized excellence in reporting and writing, photography and videography, site design and structure, and community engagement. The contest, which included more than 100 entrants in three categories singled out the top 10 websites in each group.

KUsports.com was in the group for sites with up to 500,000 unique monthly visitors.

Though the top 10 are not ranked, other sites in KUsports.com’s class that were recognized included the Wisconsin State Journal, the Bloomington Herald-Times and the Tuscaloosa News. Other top-10 finishers in larger categories included the Daily Oklahoman, USA Today, the Washington Post and the San Antonio Express-News.

This is the second major award for KUsports.com in the past year. In June, Editor and Publisher magazine recognized KUsports.com with its prestigious EPpy Award, for being the top website in its category.

Judges of the contest work at media outlets including AOL Fanhouse, MSNBC.com, ESPN.com and Yahoo! Sports.

Congratulations LJW. Here's your new slogan:

"Matt Tait & KU Sports.... Bringing Kansas football a dynasty....

One article at a time."

hawk316 10 years ago

And more congratulations from this reader. I greatly enjoy kusports.com and so appreciate the good job y'all do. Thank you for working so hard to keep us well-informed.

matt07 10 years ago

They must have not read any of Keegan's articles.

Andy Tweedy 10 years ago

...you beat me to it!!! Nicely played!

Jacobpaul81 10 years ago

First thought that went through my head.

ahpersecoachingexperience 10 years ago

Yep, I was headed straight to the Keegan take too. Great minds. . .

texashawk10 10 years ago

I think Tait is just that good, so Keegan can write whatever he wants and this will still be one of the best sites out there.

waywardJay 10 years ago

Most of Keegan's are Opinion pieces, that will not deter reporting. Same reason Fox news will never be a bona fide News Channel. Zing.

Actually just saying it's Tait and Co is rough. Most of the writers on this site have been strong since Meyer left and kegstand started focusing on his opinion.

Good Work, Don't let it get to your heads.

kufankam 10 years ago

i find it humorous that people just bash and bash this site... yet, continue to read and post here on a daily basis. if the site is so bad, go away! sure people write less than average articles now and again or make mistakes - we all do. i make mistakes at my job all the time. get over it! i find it humorous that your presence (while only to gripe), contributed to the site winning the honor.

hawk316 10 years ago

Not only that, kufan, but from the awards kusports.com continues to receive, they are obviously doing a great job. Some of these posters just don't realize how good they have it.

Andy Tweedy 10 years ago

Personally, I really really love this site, I just don't care for a lot of Keegan's articles. The coverage is fantastic. I really KU football, but that doesn't mean I have to be happy with every aspect of it.

DevilHawk 10 years ago

I think you meant "...really like KU..."

Andy Tweedy 10 years ago

just seeing if you were paying attention...

Bill Kackley 10 years ago

I agree with kufankam 100%. I appreciate what we get. If you don't like it you don't have to read it.

Bill Kackley 10 years ago

I agree 100% with kufankam. If you don't like to site don't read on it.

Well-deserved, LJW. Even though you have your detractors, they oddly enough are always sure to check here daily (or more often) to read your stories and posted comments.

KuKain 10 years ago

Keep up the good work! I love this site, thx for everything.

Now cue the haters.....

Chris1955 10 years ago

Congratulations on the recognition of your achievement! I trust that the LJW will continue to innovate.

Well Done!

tis4tim 10 years ago

Well deserved, LJW. Keep up the excellent work!

Benjamin Piehler 10 years ago

beats the heck out of rivals.com, in my opinion. feel sorry for schools who's online hub is there...

focojayhawk 10 years ago

i have actually been meaning to sign up for rivals. would you suggest not too?? if kusports is as good or better i won't waste my time!

rockchalks7 10 years ago

Rivals is great coverage... especially there board... tons of info that you cant get anywhere else... i'm on there about 20 times a day gettin new updates on recruiting and everything else... def recommend it

dynamitehawk 10 years ago

Jesse "The Pimp" Newell. Nick "Freaking Genius" Krug. Tommy Boy Keegan. Gary "Basketball Bar Napkin" Bedore. Don Jon Kealing. Matt "Foschball Wit' 'Dem Gargantuans" Tait. Bill "I Pissed off The Entire State of Kentucky With One Simple Article" Mayer. And all the board rats. Well done.

I love this site.

jaybate 10 years ago

On target, so direct.

The web site of record for The Legacy.

Not perfect.

Getting better.

waywardJay 10 years ago

Not to toot our horn but come on. I mean. We help.

Just saying.

UmbertoConforti 10 years ago

I think Bedore is one of the best sportswriters in America. I am not his relative or even know him, and it isn't because his name ends in a vowel. He is just good.

Ron Franklin 10 years ago

"I pity the fool who don't visit kusports.com on a regular basis."

aerohawk 10 years ago

+1

Goes so well with the profile pic.

NebraskaJayhawk 10 years ago

Congrats.....keep up the good work guys!

Funhawk 10 years ago

If you check out the sports' sites of other newspapers in Big XII college towns, those do not have near the content of the LJW's. Jayhawk fans are fortunate to have this website. Matt Tait is fun.

Debbie Mangen 10 years ago

Congratulations, LJW! KUsports.com is my homepage. I enjoy your articles and the comments afterwards. The critics should read the other papers from the cities of colleges as I do after each game to see what the compition has to say. I have always thought your columns were interesting and informative. Thanks for your hard work and for keeping those of us who aren't close to Lawrence informed.

swunruh 10 years ago

Some of us probably take this site for granted. When you don't live in Kansas and when you read other newspaper's sports web sites, you realize how great it is to have this site to follow the Jayhawks. Congratulations.

DevilHawk 10 years ago

Well-deserved recognition.

(Maybe not for Keegan, but definitely for everything else and especially for Tait's articles.)

overseashawk 10 years ago

Why's everybody so hard on Keegan? I enjoy his articles.

Funhawk 10 years ago

So do I. He's a realist, like all big time sports editors.

Jacobpaul81 10 years ago

Interesting. Most the time he reads like an uninformed jack_. That or a drunk. Either way, he's very arrogant and egotistical with his columns and he never writes anything that has any informative value. It's always opinion. Considering how off most his opinions have been over the years, he's going to take a lot of flak for them.

Carter Patterson 10 years ago

Keegan's such an optimist. He predicted KU Football would win 4 games instead of 3. In all seriousness, he's candid and I enjoy most of what he writes.

Kurt Eskilson 10 years ago

I'm here every day … several times a day. I love this site and all the wild and wacky board rats who frequent it. (Except for a very few trolls and congenitally negative bashers.) Thanks for hosting it, LJW, and for providing so much fodder for discussion!

2Bnamedlater 10 years ago

This award would be just another reason I read this website to get actual KU sports information. Cause where I live, we get blips about KU and it's usually related to the Big 12, and next year I probably won't even get conference coverage in the local rag.

Thanks for doing a GREAT job LJW and all the writers, yes even Kegan gets a nod. C'mon he usually gets the most post from us at the end of his writings.

Hawkman021 10 years ago

Congrats on the award, kusports.com is my home page i think i spend more time reading on here than I do any other site, well except facebook

JayhawkBigXII 10 years ago

KUsports needs to run the latest Pelini story... about lying/joking to that Navy kid at the Holiday Bowl.

focojayhawk 10 years ago

I visit this site at least 5 to 10 times a day. Do i have a life? Yes, because I visit this website. Do i have a job? Yes, with a computer sitting right next to me. It was way more times a day when waiting for Selby to be cleared, by the way. Thanks kusports, you guys are great.

clevelandjayhawker 10 years ago

Congrats..... My fav KUSPORTS.COM memory of 2011..... being at work and reading the live feed for the Colorado game. I doubt many other sites have a feature like this and it cant be easy to type the play by play for an entire game

Thanks for that moment of my fanhood

mikehawk 10 years ago

I love the site and the articles. It is the hateful, negative posts, and "blog fights" I dislike and find detracting. Congratulations on the award LJW.

three2b 10 years ago

The "blog fights" are half the reason I visit this site.

Seriously though....Great job LJW and Congratulations!

Ryan Wood 10 years ago

5DecadeHawk thinks this is absurd. And he'll be back tomorrow to find more content to be angry about.

fansincewilt 10 years ago

I have attempted to visit other school's websites and have yet to find anything to compare with this one. As far as I know, it is the best.

KU_FanSince75 10 years ago

Well, as one of my actors would say, in describing this web site------I'm talking about Clint Eastwood--------"Go ahead, make my day!" KUSports.com does make my day----u the bomb! Congrats to everyone who work hard to make this site what it is!

KU_FanSince75 10 years ago

Opps, I meant to say, "as one of my favorite actors would say"----sorry!

Phoggin_Loud 10 years ago

Congratulations LJW! Well deserved recognition.

It is a testament to the quality of this site to see all of the "trolls" from other Universities post here. e-smack at it's best.

Keep up the great work!

STLJHawk86 10 years ago

Congratulations LJW. Thanks for providing timely information about KU sports to those of us that live outside the Lawrence/KC area.

Doug LeMoine 10 years ago

Totally, totally deserved. For everyone who follows the Hawks from afar, this site is invaluable for its reporting, photos, analysis and conversation. ALSO: It's super-easy to find stuff, and it way nicer-looking than kansascity.com.

aerohawk 10 years ago

As a jayhawk who lives in the middle of no where, far from Kansas, I appreciate this website very much. It is essentially my only source for Jayhawk news and information. I think this award is very much deserved. I like the articles and the live game coverage. The site is well organized and user friendly. I think the staff write good articles and despite all the crap they get in the comment section they keep it up.

I also think the fan interactions and blogging are great. There are many fans who consistently contribute thoughtful commentary on the blogs, which only enhances the site.

Thomas Michaud 10 years ago

Congratulations KUsports! I not only appreciate the news, articles, media and forums, but you attention to detail in the layout, typography, and the guts (code—and how it took advantage of standards, javascript, CSS 2 & 3, etc.) that goes into the site - especially when looking at many of those other sites you linked to. All together, it's an amazing team! I wish all this had been around when I had been at KU, but it's a great way to keep in touch here in Michigan.

HawkInAL 10 years ago

While Keegan isn't going to win a Pulitzer (or newspaper equivalent) anytime soon, I still appreciate his candor and "outsider's take" on all things KU. As die-hard KU fans, we often see things only through our crimson-and-blue colored glasses. Keegan helps to keep me grounded somewhat.

The alternative is the Mobile Press Register (and local sports talk radio), where blind allegiance to the Crimson Tide is demanded, else you get the axe...

Yes, kusports.com is all that....

Ludwig Supraphonic 10 years ago

Love the site. I live east coast and local sports is endless ACC bloviation. Thanks for great hawks hoops coverage and for constantly expanding the football coverage. Even the folks that provide stereotypical negatives serve a useful purpose with their tunnel vision perspective and predictable rants. They make the rest of us look and feel better and can provide therapeutic catharsis. The ladies of the Spanish court were accompanied by apes to be perceived as more beautiful. Thanks Aperse, Mulatta and JayhawkinNebr you provide a bottom below my lowest points.

kesmithstl1 10 years ago

my starting lineup would be as follows:

Point Guard - Jesse Newell (leader, a la Jacque) Shooter - Matt Tait (got a good eye) 3 man - Jaybate (has the tude for this spot) Power FW - Bedore (senior leadership?) Big man - Keegan (use his size for something)

Seriously though, congrats. Without this site, my days would just be ho hum!

milwaukeeJAYHAWK 10 years ago

Congrats, LJW!

I'm a huge fan of this site. No other college is as well-served as KU by their local newspaper, and I've checked on many of them.

All the haters can take a hike.

jhawkfan1981 10 years ago

anyone that doesnt like this.....dont comment anymore...dont give your opinion...because we all come back to this sight, and its good reading!!

Redlandsjhawk 10 years ago

Well deserved and very much appreciated. Thank you so much LJW and all the regulars Jaybate, High Elite Major, Kushaw. Stupid Michael, et al.

Ashwin Rao 10 years ago

Congratulations to LJW! You are making us proud your own way! Thanks for all that you do!

Kenneth Johnson 10 years ago

The award is most well deserved.

As a longtime Kansas basketball fan, the first thing I do in the morning is to log on to KUSports.com to catch up on the Jayhawk news. Clearly it is THE source -- accurate and complete.

I make it my home page during basketball season.

pizzashuttle 10 years ago

I get a lot of value out of this site and appreciate the contribution of all of the writers and of course Nick Krug's photos. I enjoyed the football game day cram sessions you did and wish you would do the same thing for the bigger match-ups in basketball. Jesse's articles where he looks into the stats also are greatly appreciated. Rock Chalk LJW!

ku_foaf 10 years ago

Congratulations! I missed about 10 years of Journal-World Sports before the internet, but I've been reading since 1985. Always enjoyed the writing and the writers.

Tony Bandle 10 years ago

The coverage is fantastic but, for me what makes this site stand out, is the absolute knowledge, cleverness and sheer ingenuity of the posters.

<p>KUsports.com may be the only site whereby sports comments are contained in Japanese Haikus!!! When you log onto this site, you can spot a troller immediately because the don't understand S### about the true Kansas sport's fan devotion and loyalty.

Heck..I can name 30 posters I laugh my ass off along with them when I read them...and another 30 posters I laugh my ass off at them when I read them. [I go through a lot of asses!!]

A lot of other sites are just jokes.

Gary Wirsig 10 years ago

Congratulations, LJW and thanks for your service to the KU community! This site has been my lifeline to KU sports during many years in the Air Force. I will retire in 15 days and move back to Lawrence, but still expect to visit this site at least once a day.

troutsee 10 years ago

Well deserved. I visit this website daily and rely on it for the latest in Jayhawk news.

actorman 10 years ago

"5DecadeHawk thinks this is absurd. And he'll be back tomorrow to find more content to be angry about."

I nominate the above for post of the day. Sums up the haters beautifully!

The first thing I thought when I saw this headline was, "But how could this site possibly be thought of so highoy with Keegan being the devil incarnate?" I'm so sick of the constant trashing of Keegan. I've criticized him myself when I felt like he said something ridiculous or that didn't make sense, but the criticism of him is so constant and so over the top that it just makes the posters themselves look like idiots.

Jacobpaul81 10 years ago

Opinions vs. Fact. That's the pure and simple truth of the matter. He dug his hole. Every time he writes a piece of opinionated garbage, he's going to hear about it.

actorman 10 years ago

As I said in another post, he is writing an opinion column, which means his job is to ... (wait for it now), give his opinion! The whole "opinion vs. fact" argument alone shows the irrationality of the Keegan haters. Sometimes Keegan gives his opinion based on facts, in which case he tells us about it. Other times he's guessing or proposing an idea, in which case he lets us know that as well. I know it's a shock to a lot of people that someone who writes an opinion column would state his opinion but that's generally how it works.

Gene Jackson 10 years ago

You can tell it is successful because everywhere you look on this website there are advertisements. Even ads every few lines or so in the comment section. I wouldn't be surprised to find that the LJW makes more from this site than the ads in their newspaper.
