K-State’s Curtis Kelly under investigation by athletic department

Kansas State forward Curtis Kelly dunks during the second half against Nebraska on Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2011, in Manhattan, Kan.

— Curtis Kelly is the subject of a Kansas State athletic department investigation for a violation of a condition in the student-athlete handbook, the Wichita Eagle reported on Tuesday night.

The violation could earn him dismissal from the team, a source within the department told the Eagle.

The source said Kelly, a senior, is appealing the violation. A KSU official said he remains on the team.

K-State officials refused to specify the nature of Kelly’s violation, citing student privacy issues.

Kansas State’s Freddy Asprilla left the team in mid-January to explore professional opportunities in his home country of Colombia.

In addition, Wally Judge quit the team last week.

Kansas State is 16-8 overall and 4-5 in the Big 12.

If they keep going at this rate, pretty soon the kitty-kats won't have enough players to field a team. What a great opportunity for their walk-ons!

Personally I like: EMAW= Every Mildcat A Whiner!

clevelandjayhawker 9 years, 11 months ago

Wow!!! but was kind of more fun to watch Kelly on the bench just sitting there and martin not letting him in the game at Allen.....

Feels like 3 years ago when the pre-season predictions were out and kstate was suppose to win the big12 and kelly was an all conference prediction haaaaaa

Since I was born in Kansas I am really a Jayhawk by birth. How sad this is for a young man with such talent and the choices he has made that have not only put his team in a precarious situation but his future as well. I almost feel guilty that we get such wholesome basketball players and have for so many years. Congrats to HCBS for seeing the character that goes with the skills! RCJH

squawkhawk 9 years, 11 months ago

By "wholesome" i'm guessing you mean that we don't get players who drink, smoke pot, get dui's, get into fights, don't shoot women with BB guns, don't stab other players and don't hit or expose themselves to women. Is this what you mean by wholesome? Maybe the pot should stop calling the kettle black.

bayareajhawk 9 years, 11 months ago

Giddens was stabbed by a non-student, if that's what you're referencing. The players didn't stab anybody at the Moon Bar, they just jumped on the idiot and beat him en masse. Also, it wasn't a BB gun. It was an Airsoft gun. Big difference. My roommates and I used to have Airsoft battles in our apartment fairly regularly (oftentimes when sober). We would never have done that with BB guns, no matter how much alcohol we had imbibed.

But your point stands. We can't point the finger at much bad athlete behavior without being hypocritical.

Silly Wildcats, basketball is for Jayhawks.

Ha, ha! Couldn't agree more---yep, definitely comment of the year!

Mark Winter 9 years, 11 months ago

Unconfirmed reports from students that he had flunked a drug test. Have no evidence of this, but that was the rumor. We will know soon as apparently the cat is out of the bag.

Nutflush21 9 years, 11 months ago

Its not just one drug test, rumor is it is the third or fourth. If you could be kicked off the team for one drug test, KSU and every other school would not be able to field football or basketball teams.

squawkhawk 9 years, 11 months ago

Agreed, how many chances did Aqib Talib get? I'm guessing at least 3.

squawkhawk 9 years, 11 months ago

Of course, you mean KU included, right?

nocaljayhawk 9 years, 11 months ago

I'd certainly miss seeing him whine, raise his palms, and screw up his face every time he's whistled for a foul.

Thomas Michaud 9 years, 11 months ago

Are these guys just not wanting to play KU a second time?

Greg Lux 9 years, 11 months ago

No they are just looking for an excuse for losing again

And with this story-------------another nail goes into Frank Martin's Coffin of Doom!!!!!!!!!

REHawk 9 years, 11 months ago

Lack of college level head coaching experience haunts Martin, the coach K State players call "Frank." The guy is obviously a very earnest talented coach, but has risen then fallen too quickly with skilled players who lack the character to maintain steady focus. There is a heck of a lot more to the coaching game than a knowledge of Xs and Os. Without the psychological insights and very careful recruiting, disaster awaits any Division I coaching staff. A team can afford to carry one, maybe two kids of shaky character and focus so long as the majority of the squad is mature and rock solid, providing support and stability. And if the staff possesses experience and insight to deal with occasional slips. Martin and Hill might have leaped into the limelight too quickly. Sad situation.

kureader 9 years, 11 months ago

Is it true that K-Straight is holding basketball tryouts on Friday?

gchawk 9 years, 11 months ago

And the hits just keep on comin'. In Kelly's defense, maybe he didn't read the handbook, I hear it lacks pictures.

Jeff Hargate 9 years, 11 months ago

Didn't Asprilla actually transfer to Canisus? It seems he and Judge did not like playing for Martin. I like Frank, but it seems to me that he could be the new version of Bobby Knight minus the basketball IQ. From what I have heard from Ahern donors is that the wagons are circling around the basketball team. Sounds like a Mangino careful what you wish for...

justinryman 9 years, 11 months ago

Well I will say this for Lawn and Garden State, and Jacob Pullen at least he won't have to play in the NIT, due to not having a good enough record to qualify.

Biggest fall from grace, thier preseason ranking to where they are now!! I mean if you really want to underachieve in life just look to the purple kitties.

It's good to be a Jayhawk!!!!!!!

douggiejug 9 years, 11 months ago

The Octagon of Doom will be waiting for you on Monday ....... KSU will be in the Sweet Sixteen this year as a 9 seed and KU will fall in the not so sweet 32 like usual ...... It is great to do well in the regular season and look back to your national championship banner for 20 years but KU sucks in the tournament, No?

Curtis Kelly is one player that has abused NCAA rules, but wait til the NCAA iron fist comes down in Rock Chalk land and blows up the program for countless violations ..... Think about it YOU PAY ALL OF YOUR GOOD PLAYERS!

milwaukeeJAYHAWK 9 years, 11 months ago

national championship BANNERS

there's more than one, bro

The rest of your post is just crybaby bellyaching.

Jim Pendleton 9 years, 11 months ago

Octagon of Doom? Are you serious douggie? The only doom in that dump is self inflicted since the kitties can't beat the Hawks in their own building. One win in 22 years? Even Colorado, Iowa St, and Texas Tech have more home wins over us in that span.

Sweet 16 as a nine seed? You won't be playing us or Texas in the round of 32 (not that you'd want to), but let's see - Ohio St, Pittsburgh, Duke (already lost to them in KC - good luck with a rematch). Sorry, no chance dude.

The Hawks might lose early on in the tourney from time to time, but at least we get in every year. In addition to our titles, we also have the current longest consecutive appearance streak in the NCAA, which will reach 22 straight years next month. The kitties have been in the tourney how many times (sorry NIT doesn't count)?

To paraphrase the Monday Night NFL Countdown guys - c'mon man!

Rock Chalk!!

My mom always told me never to trust, or argue with, a grown man who calls himself Douggie, so I don't intend to start now.

douggiejug 9 years, 11 months ago

Good you consulted your mom on this matter

Tyler Bruce 9 years, 11 months ago

I'm confused.. When did it become a bad thing to be a proud of your history? Not only do we have five banners (to kstates 0), we also have the second most wins in history (what number is kstate?), we have more Big 6/7/8/12 championships than every other team (combined), and we have one of the most historic and exciting places in college basketball.. There's a reason that every player in the Big 12s favorite place to play besides home is Allen Fieldhouse (and to that point, nobody takes OUR gym and calls it the Hawktagon of Doom, Allen Fieldhouse West, etc.)

Grow up Peter Pan, Count Chocula.. You would DIE for what we have

Tyler Bruce 9 years, 11 months ago

P.S.... Latest bracketology has you as an 11 (you can only go down to a 12).. And you're not getting any better! Correct me if I'm wrong, don't you still get to play us Texas and mizzery one more time? Good luck lol

KU_FanSince75 9 years, 11 months ago

Hey, doogie---you mean the "Octagon of Dominance," right? By the Jayhawks, that is! Get it right, one time!

s6u6r6f 9 years, 11 months ago

Oooo...the "Octagon of Doom!" I'm soooooo afraid! It sounds soooooo scary! What will the Jayhawks face there? More of the same? Have they painted the seats red and blue yet? Rock Chalk, dreamer.

packywacky88 9 years, 11 months ago

I hear the NIT is a really nice tourney. I'm sure they will have a great time.

HawkBBall 9 years, 11 months ago

Only D1 school where the walkons start. Keep forcing them out the door, Frank.

Robert Murphy 9 years, 11 months ago

If there is anyone in the K State athletic program who needs to smoke a joint it's the coach, Frank Martin. In a perfect world Frank would be a prison guard. In fact I think he was in The Shawshank Redemption.

JHWK 9 years, 11 months ago

Very sad. Thought we had an emerging rivalry within the state arising when I saw the ESPN team's belief that K-State would be good again back in October.

Then the implosion began, and is showing no sign of stopping.

Are we to believe it is just coincidence? Lack of maturity of the players? Lack of leadership by the coach?

Frank's a riot of a personality and I'd love to have him in the Big 12 for a long time. But, that's only if he's able to keep a team together.

I know! Have that cadaver that's their football coach as basketball coach, too! Zombies don't need sleep! hahahahaha

Rock Chalk! Let's use Saturday as a springboard for next Monday!!

Steve Brown 9 years, 11 months ago

I'm so jealous of Dook and Tar Heels that they have a rivalry. I keep looking for our arch rival and can't find anyone local and KY don't play us often enough.

I can't imagine why the NIT would invite some 7-9 Big 12 Turf Pro Monsanto U. team when they have all those fabulous Mo. Valley teams, but heck Pullen can watch his kittens on ESPN in the garden.

Yesterday, Wednesday, on 810 KC radio KK blased KSU to just bottle up whatever Kelly did with legal action to delay until end of season, and Mitch Holtus voice of reason told him the thought was nuts. THen pouty mouth Kevin went on to blast HCBS that we never punish rather we coddle our players Taylor for the fist fight, Mario for attacking two girls, Twins for shooting little old ladies with BB guns, his words not mine...He foregts his beloved Snyder played that QB in the bowl game the week after he attacked a student Co.ed... I willnever shop at Joslyn's jewelry or any other sponsor of his prejudice, bias and unfactual radio show.... Seems like Marconi or someone should monitor his show for truth police...I know it is his opinion yet he stretches too often..guess I can't blame his jealousy he hasn't had a real BBall team since Chuckie Williams and Mike Evans. Oh, Beasley was good, sort of. If you are a crimson and blue fan and spend one nickel in 810 sports zone that means you support his bias, find a Johnny's or a Tanner's or IHop for your food.

Steve Brown 9 years, 11 months ago

is it true Iowa State has one of their best players suspended for 3 games. And contrast with this NIT State getting Kelly a 'pass'.
