? Kansas University’s volleyball team, led by tournament MVP Allison Mayfield, claimed the Georgia Bulldog Invitational title on Saturday night with a 25-16, 25-19, 25-14 victory over Georgia.

It was the second straight year the Jayhawks took home a tournament title to start the season. Last year, KU won the Bluejay Invitational.

Kansas, which earlier rolled past Liberty by scores of 25-21, 25-13, 25-9 on Saturday, improved to 3-0.

“I’m really proud of the growth we showed this weekend,” KU coach Ray Bechard said. “We were pretty disappointed with how we started, but today was a good day. I was happy to see how we were able to pressure teams today with our blocking and serves.”

Mayfield set the tone for the Kansas offense, knocking 10 kills to lead an effort that included eight kills apiece from middle blockers Tayler Tolefree and Caroline Jarmoc.

Jarmoc, who averaged more than two blocks a game over the weekend, was named to the All-Tournament team with Mayfield and KU libero Brianne Riley.

Riley took home Libero of the Tournament, a recognition for her effort behind a front line that racked up 12 total blocks.

“We feel like we can create some opportunities on that front defensive line,” Bechard said.

This weekend marked the eighth time in Bechard’s 14 years at Kansas that the Jayhawks swept their opening weekend tournament. Dating back to last season’s sweep at Oklahoma, Kansas has won 12 straight sets.

Kansas will welcome Appalachian State, Belmont and South Dakota State on Sept. 2-3 in the Jayhawk Invitational at Horejsi Center.
