Kansas soccer falls in OT

Butler University defender Claire Milam’s goal from 27 yards out just over three minutes into overtime lifted the Bulldogs to a 3-2 exhibition soccer victory over Kansas University on Sunday at Jayhawk Soccer Complex.

The Jayhawks led 2-0 midway through the second half, but were one player down after defender Shelby Williamson was assessed a red card in the 56th minute.

KU scored in the 66th minute on a goal from Whitney Berry off an assist from Lianna Salazar. Less than three minutes later, Ingrid Vidal scored.

Freshman Kelsey Lyden hit the crossbar in overtime; Butler scored the game-winner less than three minutes later.

KU used both Kaitlyn Stroud and Kat Liebetrau in net. Stroud had five saves and Liebetrau three in the second half and overtime, including a spectacular diving stab.

Butler outshot KU, 20-12. Vidal had five shots and Berry three. KU will play host to Tennessee at 5 p.m. Friday at Jayhawk Soccer Complex.

Losing a starting defender and playing a woman down is a tough scenario to overcome. The fact that we scored twice, and scored first, is a positive. Francis should have been able to get the win though, most coaches can stop another team from scoring, even a women down. the tough part is scoring while you are packing the box. But we had a two goal lead! Butler is not ranked very high, we should gage our team on how we do against Tennessee on Friday. step it up Francis! you have the players!
