Archie Goodwin, a 6-foot-4, 180-pound senior shooting guard from Sylvan Hills High in Little Rock, Ark., has narrowed his college basketball recruiting list to eight, Zagsblog.net reports.
Goodwin, who is Rivals.com’s No. 11-rated player nationally, has a list of Kansas University, Arkansas, Baylor, Georgetown, Kentucky, Memphis, Missouri and UConn.
He sliced Florida and Louisville from his most recent list of 10.
“I’m going to take some visits this fall, probably take a couple in September if I can,” he told Zagsblog. “But as far as a decision, it will probably come late (in April).”
Goodwin previously had told Zagsblog that Arkansas and Kentucky likely would be in his final five.
“Other than those two, the others are probably wide-open,” he said. “But I’m still giving everybody a fair chance, no matter what.”
As far as his ability, he said: “I think I’ll be a player that stands out at whatever school I go to just because of my work ethic and how much I bring to the game.”
Goodwin played this past summer for the Arkansas Wings AAU team. He was impressive at the Nike Peach Jam in mid July despite playing with a bulky brace on a left wrist that he dislocated.
The Memphis Commercial-Appeal said, “Goodwin didn’t disappoint, scoring from all over the floor and wowing the crowd late in the game with a reverse dunk in which he took off from the right side of the rim, glided underneath the basket and jammed the ball on the other side. He didn't shoot particularly well, finishing at 38.3 percent (36-of-94) for the tournament, but was able to get to the rim almost effortlessly. His 45 free-throw attempts (he made 24) tied for the second-most.”

Goodwin will be a good win for whomever he decides upon. He's always been one of my top choices. He's supposed to give 110 % every time he's on the court. Prior to this, I had heard he had dropped Kansas from his list, so I'm pleasantly surprised. Still, it sounds like he is favoring Kenstinky and Arkansas. Arkansas isn't surprising, since it would be in state for him. And if Kenstinky's revolving carousal continues to the NBA, he'll probably head there. If Kansas gets Smart (no pun intended), that wouldn't leave enough scholarships and would definitely effect available playing time. A late (April) decision would be a logical decision on Goodwin's part.

I think everyone would be very surprised if he didn't pick Arkansas. He is waiting this year to see what Anderson does with the team. That is why he isn't picking a school until April.
But he will most likely go with the in state school.

Sounds like he knows where he stands, and is a kid with an attitude.

If he can't shoot freethrows, forget it. We've got enough guys who can't stand 15 ft from the basket and hit the rim.
Make_Ur_Free_Throws 1 year, 10 months ago
Agreed! We need players that can help finish at the line. Reverse, under the rim dunks are pretty, but if you are fouled doing it and can't convert you are only bringing a partial game.

Shooting while wearing a bulky brace on a left wrist might account for the low percentage. It seems likley that if he could not shoot he would not have been offered a scholarship as a wing.

KU has lost out on almost every guard available for 2012 class except he and Smart. Not looking that good.
kushaw 1 year, 10 months ago
How many do you need? As long as you lock up a good center, PF, and a SF that's really all KU needs from this class. I think Self is content with Tharpe, and EJ at the guard spots after this season.

from every report I read during that evaluation period, they emphasized that his shooting was clearly off because of the bulky brace.

When a post does not state "all fiction. no malice", are we to imply one or the other, or both? Just curious. Slow day.

To riff on Inspector Cluzot...
You are to imply everything and nothing.
You are also to infer everything and nothing.
You are to anticipate what can be anticipated and what cannot be.
You are to bridge light waves and electromagnetism with the fifth dimension and explain everything with ten dimensions of hyperspace, and you are not to build such a bridge or hazard such an explanation.
You are to dance in white tie and tails and you are to sit naked and motionless.
You are to believe devoutly in a deity and doubt the deity's existence completely.
You are to identify with John Calipari's mousse and express incomprehension at it.
You are to posit parallel basketball universes and posit their anti-matter equivalents.
And you are to do all of these things on slow days and not do them.

Wilt may not have the Prime Minister of England, but he was the prime minister of basketball.

Funny how the writer tries to compensate the bad shooting with how effortlessly he got to the rim with 45 attempts....sounds good until you see he only made 24 of them (53%) on free throws...I know it's only one tournament but still but from a guard I would expect better free throw shooting on 45 attempts.

...effortlessly he got to rim with 45 free throw attempts...

I thought they were talking offensive guard in football when I read the headline. Then I saw he weighed 180 and got scared. Then I connected the dots and realized it was a basketball recruit. Thank God.

Wake me if Kansas makes his final 4 and he's dropped Kensucky and Arkansas.

I just want the gosh dang season to start! Im getting impatient! Already watched the Big 12 championship from this year and the 08 Championship like 2 times since the season ended.
Jeeveshawk 1 year, 10 months ago
I personally don't care if his list has been sliced to 8. It doesn't give any of the schools he is considering a great chance and it hasn't brewed down to a point where it is very intense between 2-4 schools.
Also, has anyone else noticed that he has the same name as the main character in the "Nero Wolfe Mysteries" by Rex Stout?

I do like the sound of his comments – plenty of self-esteem, to be sure, but for what I consider good reasons – work ethic and bringing it for the team.
One question on the reporter's comment, ""Goodwin played this past summer for the Arkansas Wings AAU team. He was impressive at the Nike Peach Jam in mid July despite playing with a bulky brace on a left wrist that he dislocated."" Which "left wrist" was dislocated and needed the brace?
