Cold Bulldogs doomed

Butler hits record-low 18.8 percent

— Butler couldn’t go inside. It couldn’t score outside. Its shots were blocked all night long.

Forget the last-second heave.

When it came to winning this championship, the Bulldogs played down to their size.

Butler set a record for worst shooting percentage in the NCAA title game, a woeful 18.8 percent, and managed the second-fewest field goals, making only 12 baskets in its 53-41 loss to Connecticut on Monday night.

It is the second straight year the Bulldogs (28-10) finish as runners-up after a 61-59 loss to Duke last year.

“You just hope the shots go in,” said senior Zach Hahn, who went 0-for-2 after giving Butler a big lift off the bench in the semifinals. “That’s how it’s been all tournament. Whenever we needed a big shot, somebody came up with it. I guess we just ran out of steam. Nobody could make ’em.”

Shelvin Mack, who averaged almost 22 points in the first five games in the tournament, was Butler’s only player to finish in double figures — and he managed only 13 points, on 4-of-15 shooting. Leading scorer Matt Howard made his only field goal about five minutes into the game, finishing with seven points on 1-of-13.

It was Howard’s fewest points since scoring six in the season opener against Marian. But he only played 23 minutes that night.

“This one is pretty frustrating, just personally,” the senior said. “I wish, from my standpoint, that I was able to give a little bit more to my team.”

The Bulldogs were hoping to reverse last year’s heartbreak, when Gordon Hayward’s half-court shot at the buzzer bounced off the rim. Give little guys everywhere hope, too. After all, if a school with 4,500 students that plays in the Horizon League can win the national title, what’s stopping every other team playing in the mid-majors?

Instead, Butler showed why the little guys have it so tough.

Interesting for a team with a canine mascot to be called an underdog. I guess Huskies have more determination and natural resiliancy than Bulldogs. Bulldogs have a lot of fight in them, but most I've known are really just rough looking with a good nature. Huskies, on the other hand are closer to their ancestors, the wolves.

wow, butler's shooting made ku's last night look good!! that was a sad game and made me more sick that the jayhawks were not there. did you notice "one shining moment"?? not one sign of any jayhawks..... wow, what a slap in the face!!! couldn't believe it!!

@ lovemyhawks----I was thinking along the same lines as you-----thinking, damn, the Jayhawks would have put a better fight if they were in the title game. And---------the "one shining moment" thing-----yep, I was looking for a Jayhawk hightlight and was rudely disappointed.

After the game was over, I watched some of UCONN's post celebrations and saw the kids at Storrs, Connecticutt celebrating. I thought to myself, they do not know how to celebrate like KU does. I watched the KU-Memphis highlights again and the Mass St. celebrations. Haha. I felt a lot better watching that, but yeah I was definitely thinking we could have hung with UCONN. It is what it is and what happens when you do not show up and execute effectively or else we could have been playing in the championship game.

Did Bill Self give the pregame speech to Butler last night?

I apologize for suggesting out coach chokes in big games, maybe Butler just got shooting tips from Brady and Tyrel?

Don't worry about little ol' Jason here - he believes that life should be just like the video games that he plays in between getting his diaper changed.

Butler played horrible, but couldnt get any calls. I thought the refs dictated things, and made sure UConn would win. Thats just my opinion, but thought the refs were horrible and pro uconn.

the most frustrating thing watching that game was that I thought KU could have beaten either of them the way they were playing... UConn couldnt hit a three and Butler couldnt get inside. Ugh. shoulda, woulda coulda.

I wonder how many newspaper articles there are today in Indy saying Brad can't win the big one and how many Butler fans are posting on boards how if only they had (fill in the blank) as a coach, they'd have 2 championships now.

Connecticut sucks. Worse NCAA champ of last 20+ years. How long until the title is wiped away by further investigations?
