Bill Self releases statement about Josh Selby

An Internet blogger citing unnamed sources caused quite a stir on Twitter on Friday, telling KU fans to “brace yourselves for some bad news on Josh Selby eligibility.”

In response to media inquiries following fan reaction to the tweet, KU coach Self released a statement indicating not much has changed regarding the eligibility status of the freshman point guard, who has not been cleared to participate in games.

“We have had numerous inquiries about the status of Josh Selby. The NCAA has cleared Josh to be on scholarship, attend class and practice, but he has not yet been cleared for participation (in games). That process is ongoing. It is not uncommon for these cases to take time, as we have seen in many other cases. Of course we would prefer that this be behind us, but we respect the process and will not comment further until it is complete,” Self said.

The NCAA continues to look into Selby’s academic eligibility and status as an amateur. After missing a couple weeks of school, Selby, who attended three high schools in Baltimore, was given the OK by the NCAA to attend class and be put on scholarship. The matter is ongoing.

Selby will be allowed to participate in upcoming Boot Camp conditioning sessions, which begin Monday.
