— Maybe T.J. Moe had it right.

Five days after the Missouri wide receiver drew some heat for saying Kansas University’s football team had no advantages in this year’s Border War at Arrowhead Stadium, Moe’s offense and the entire KU team proved that claim to be true as the Tigers rolled to a 35-7 victory against Kansas.

The Tigers scored touchdowns on three of their first four drives and outgained the Jayhawks 397-141 in total offense. The 141 yards against were the best for a Mizzou defense in the Big 12 era.

“The game was kind of out of hand from the jump because we put our offense in a hole,” KU senior safety Chris Harris said. “(Missouri) had a lot of talent, they had a lot of depth, and they had a great offensive gameplan. We let ’em get up 21-0 at half, and the way our offense is playing, we can’t let people score like that.”

In the fourth straight edition of the Border War played at the neutral site, the Tigers improved to 3-1 against the Jayhawks at Arrowhead. KU’s only victory in the past four seasons came in 2008. While those games featured split crowds and eye-popping plays, Saturday’s did not. Missouri fans outnumbered those in crimson and blue by at least a three-to-one margin. In all, 55,788 people were at Arrowhead, which holds 79,400.

In many ways, it was the most appropriate ending to a season that ever has been scripted. KU coach Turner Gill’s first season mercifully came to a close with Gill’s club mixing a few moments of hope with many more moments of despair. Just as had been the case all season, the Jayhawks struggled on offense, threw up little resistance on defense and finished the season 3-9 overall and 1-7 in Big 12 play.

“It hurts,” KU sophomore Kale Pick said. “This is obviously one of the biggest games of the season for us. It hurts that we didn’t come out on top today, and the game just didn’t go our way.”

Making his first start in more than a month, red-shirt freshman quarterback Jordan Webb was wildly ineffective. Webb missed open receivers, held the ball too long and was sacked five times. He also suffered a concussion late, which, Gill said, was the reason Gill went to junior Quinn Mecham for the team’s final few drives.

Though Webb’s play — 7-of-20 for 45 yards and two interceptions — was not the reason the Jayhawks lost, it was a good indicator of the way things went for Kansas.

KU’s first four drives all ended badly and each in a different way. A three-and-out to start, which featured two Missouri sacks, came first. It was followed by a missed field goal by KU senior Jacob Branstetter that capped a 12-play drive. Moments later, KU stalled after going for it on fourth-and-three near midfield. And, finally, Webb threw the first of his interceptions on the first play of the next series.

“I need to give credit to Missouri’s defense,” Gill said. “They are a very good defensive football team. They made plays.”

Despite trailing 250-72 in total offense and 21-0 on the scoreboard, Gill said he felt good about his team’s chances at halftime.

“I thought if we can keep them to 21 points, we’d be able to come back and win the football game,” he said. “Our guys responded with an interception, we came back and scored, but, offensively, we just weren’t able to make enough plays.”

KU cut the MU lead to 21-7 with 5:42 remaining in the third quarter. Freshman running back James Sims — 21 carries for 82 yards — plowed in from three yards out to give KU some life.

However, the Tigers quickly stamped out KU’s chances when Mizzou QB Blaine Gabbert led an 11-play, five-minute scoring drive that pushed the lead to 28-7. Gabbert’s one-yard TD plunge capped the drive and essentially put the game away.

Like so many other postgame news conferences this season, much of Saturday’s session was spent talking about the big picture. Doing that made the most recent Border War loss easier to take for Kansas because it gave Gill and company a chance to look forward while also pointing out the progress — however small it may have been — that was made in recent weeks.

After being outscored 159-24 during the first three games of Big 12 play (against Baylor, Kansas State and Texas A&M), the Jayhawks performed much better against much tougher opponents (No. 9 Nebraska, No. 12 Oklahoma State and No. 15 Missouri) to close the season.

KU lost the last three games of its season by a combined total of 103-24.

Despite that fact, Gill was not overly thrilled and looked like a man with a lot of work ahead of him.

“We’d like to end with W’s,” he said. “We’re here to win football games. But I think we improved. No matter what your record is, you want to see your guys improve. Our guys improved every single day and every single week, and we just have to continue to move forward.”

Caribhawk, pretty well said. The difference between NU and KU, NU will sweep it all under the rug just to win. Just win baby, just win.

I would argue there are a lot of successful college football coaches that are much more similar to Mangino's tough love style vs. TG's hug it out approach. Everybody down on Mangino - - he was never found guilty of anything although Lew tried to convict him in the court of public opinion. Now look at Lew's ego and messes, and tell me about calling the kettle black. If you recall, only former players who never got playing time pissed & moaned about Mangino (along with some anonymous people who never had the guts to disclose their identity) but Reesing, Meier, Briscoe and all the key players never said anything bad about Mangino. Mangino did poke a player in the chest & that got captured on tv, but Pelini did that to his star QB Martinez on national tv and no big deal. Mangino could coach 2 and 3 star recruits up to the 4 and 5 star level, and although TG only has mostly 2 and 3 star recruits coming in, I doubt if he can coach them up based on what I saw this year. KU had some weapons this year with its receivers, but TG and Long refused to run quick slants and screens with 3 step drops to help out the young QBs. I don't care of Long was offensive coordinator at OU (I would argue it wasn't difficult to be offensive coordinator at OU with all that talent), he also got fired as San Diego State's head coach in his last stint. I never heard, but I am curious, about TG and his coaches "work" ethic this year, did they work through the night like Bill Snyder and many coaches or was it a 9 to 5 job for them? If TG says his team has his back and he trusts them, then why did he have to implement the silly rules for cellphones and no girls after 10:00 pm, that doesn't sound like a very good way to build trust. TG is emotionless, no wonder his team followed his example.

Cmill1221, I agree with you on most of your points. It is about coaching. Mangino proved that. His last year was tough, with all the alligations which didn't help the team at all, which actually hurt the team. Whether all were correct, we don't know. By watching this team, there is some talent and speed but, poor coaching hasn't helped this team at all. I feel that if Mangino was still coach here that this team would have hit at least 50% wins, maybe plus 1. There hasn't been any what so ever improvement in the teams progress at all during this year. A good coach would have shown some progress some where in the team, offense or defense. Course we don't want a bellyacker like Bu Pelini.

Don't like the uniforms, and think the curfew thing is a bit ridiculous.

However, Coach Gill inherited a largely empty cupboard. Certain freshman and underclassmen give us a bit of a nucleus going forward, and I think recruiting is on an upswing.

Yesterday, we lost big to a vastly more talented team. Missouri has now established a good football program, something that for teams starting from scratch takes a number of years to accomplish.

Most important to me this season, is that the team did not appear to lay down, as they easily could have with some of the mid-season disasters. It seems clear that Coach Gill did not lose the locker room. Although I always liked Mangino, he clearly lost his team last year. This year's team was talent shy, but the effort did not diminish at season's end.

Coach Gill will remain our coach for quite some time. Replacing him is not economically feasible, nor is it warranted. He needs and deserves time. I don't know if he will utimately prove to be an excellent coach, but there is no credible evidence that he won't. I support Coach Gill and hope that most Jayhawks do as well. I look forward to better things in the future.

Miami, just fired their coach, maybe Gill would be interested? Could we give him enough to go? Gill has this whole team so screwed up with all the changes that no one knows what they are doing. There is talent on this team but, the coaching has it in a mess with no direction. When you have some speed on this team but, put them in a different positions, you just lost the talent and the speed because of not knowing what to do. After watching Bu Pelini the other night I think KU made a mistake by firing Mangino. Bu is worse than Mark.

Three Points:

1) I thought the uniforms were awesome! I don't like the huge strip on the pants or the little Jayhawk on the back. Move the little Jayhawk to the front collar and put the names on the back. The red uniforms are horrendous and need to be burned. I would also like to see a Jayhawk on the helmet like last years MU game.

2) Our quarterbacks haven't played very well and aren't the most talented but the coaches didn't give any of them a chance. Turner Gill was a QB himself, he should know that you can't yank around these guys. Pick a started during spring ball and stick with him.

3) Absolutely ZERO signs of positive improvement this year. I am sorry to say this, but we have returned to the BIG 12 cellar and will remain there forever. Turner Gill did more damage in less than a year than all the previous 119 seasons of KU football. Mark Mangino, like him or not, made football important to KU fans who had always just used it as an excuse to socialize until Midnight Madness. Records aside, win or lose, we competed under Mangino and sold out games. We truly only had one season with significant national recognition and I don't really even expect it again but what I do expect is for football to be recognized and appreciated within Jayhawk Nation and I am afraid that it will no longer be because of The Mistake. One year down, two more to go....

And for all the people who make lame excuses and say "well we hung in there for the first half of the OK ST game". I say to you nort Texas was only down 12 at halftime vs KU in Allen Field House. .....see how lame that sounds?!?!? Just get rid of him. 1 year down 2 to go and then see ya Turner.

Carbihawk. You are right about abandoning our spread formation. Sims is our only running attach. Our three quarterbacks are pitiful. We need to cut all three scholarships and tell them goodby. Our problem at this point is getting a real good high school quarterback to come to Kansas. They are out there but they want to go to a school that has a good offensive line . They all are looking ahead to making a name for themselves so they can go to the pros where the big money is. They cannot get noticed at Kansas as we give them no protection. If we had the protection , I don't think either of our quarterbacks would develope as they do not have the accuracy or the judgment to be winners.

Turner Gill = Terry Allen. Sorry. Nice guys finish last.

"Link" your comments on the uniforms, unfortunately I think those are the decisions where TG spends most of his time! Could KU look more bland, rumour is next year KU will only have a "U" on their totally white helmet and TG will remove the numbers from uniforms....We now know that KU has the 3 worst QBs in the Big 12, and the worst coach, there will need to be big upgrades next year. The highlights and lowlights of this year? Highlight - beating Georgia Tech in 2nd game after TG abandoned the pure running approach from the loss against N. Dakota State and went back to a spread offense that looked like the 3 previous years with intent of getting the ball in the hands of KU best weapons - - the wide receivers. Lowlights - too many to mention. KU abandons the spread offense after its only win and goes back to conservative play calling, run on first and second downs, and then leaving inexperienced QBs with a horrible offensive line to pass on what is usually 3rd and long. In retrospect, the worst game was K-State killing KU in Lawrence 59-7. The kind of rushing yards that K-State has given up all year (almost getting beat yesterday by a 3-9 team from the Sun Belt conference and giving up 270 yards to a N. Texas running back) and they still demolish KU. That is Bill Snyder schooling TG in all respects. Another lowlight - KU recruiting to date, which is supposedly close to done. Per Rivals.com, KU ranks 9th in the Big 12 in recruits (K-State ranks 8th) - OUCH! KU has one four star recruit, RB Miller from Blue Springs, and K-State has 2 four-star recruits. Among its 18 recruits, KU has 6 OL, which are greatly needed. But KU has 0 defensive line recruits, yes zero, nada! Its a tie which is worse, KU offensive or defensive line. TG was supposed to be a recruiting machine (arguably his one strength he was hired for) and he is still getting out-recruited by K-State and most of the Big 12. I really saw very little improvement in KU all year and some areas went backwards. KU still getting punts blocked as late as last game against Okie St. The TG experiment is not going well.

Those uniforms were a travesty as far as I am concerned, and I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who was bothered by the Jayhawks on the back where the name should be.

The uniforms should be: blue helmet, blue jersey, gray pants; PERIOD. White on the road, Crimson alternate. The blue on blue look does not look nearly as good as blue on the gray and white on white looks horrible unless you are the Kansas City Chiefs. Even KC couldn't pull off white on white with a white helmet though.

I would like to see KU not plaster their Trajan font on EVERY stinking uniform we have in every single sport. I still do not understand why it is thought to be necessary; we are the only college I know of that does it.

Treat them like men so the play like men. Names on the jerseys. Cut the curfew crap. They're old enough to talk on a cell phone on Friday night. If someone steps out of line you deal with it then.
