We said, they said

A collection of quotes from both sides of the Kansas vs. Missouri rivalry.

“There are people in the state of Kansas and people in the state of Missouri that hate the other state, that hate the other schools that are not even sports fans.”

— KCTV 5 sports anchor Neil Jones

“We’re the good people, they’re the bad people. That’s the best way I know to explain it. I don’t like their people, I don’t like their players, I don’t like a damn thing about ’em.”

— Former KU coach Don Fambrough

“I always consider this a Letter Jacket Game. You win this ballgame, you’re able to talk about it for 365 days. If you don’t win it, then they’re able to talk about you for 365 days.”

— KU defensive coordinator Carl Torbush

“You inherit this rivalry when you come to Mizzou as a player or a coach. It’s one of the great rivalries of college football. I’ve said this every year — you can throw the records out. It means so much to each team and it certainly means so much to our fans.”

— Missouri coach Gary Pinkel

“Right when we were leaving, someone said, ‘Beat KU all four years you’re here, and we’ll still love you no matter the outcome.’”

— Former MU quarterback Chase Daniel, recalling an encounter on his recruiting visit to Columbia, Mo.

“You’ve got this old guy coming in, and he’s just getting fired up. He starts trotting back and forth and huffing and puffing. The first time, you’re kind of like, ‘Oh my God, is he really doing this?’ But it’s pretty cool to see.”

— Former KU quarterback Todd Reesing on hearing Fambrough talk about Missouri

“They’re a bunch of thieves is what they are. And you can look it up in the dictionary. What the people in Kansas did I’m sure they felt was justified. And what we did over here we know was justified.”

— Missouri historian Richard Sunderwirth regarding the Burning of Osceola, Mo., which predated Quantrill’s Raid of Lawrence by two years but was not nearly as bloody

“Anybody that’s involved in a rivalry game like this, they can say they treat it like any other ballgame, but you don’t. They’ll run faster, they’ll jump higher and they’ll make plays in that ballgame that they wouldn’t make in any other ballgame.”

— Former Mizzou basketball coach Norm Stewart

“This game holds a little bit more power than every other game on our schedule. I know that’s all I got my mind on. Enough said. You don’t have to pump me up or give me any kind of speech. It’s Mizzou week, so I’m ready to go.”

— Former KU safety Justin Thornton prior to the 2009 Border War game

“It sounds like a cliché, but it literally does go back to the Civil War. There’s a certain venom in the air, whichever venue it is.”

— KU radio broadcaster Bob Davis

“I still hate Kansas State now. But I’m pretty sure come Saturday, I’m going to hate (Missouri) too.”

— Current KU safety Chris Harris as a freshman in 2007

“It’s a huge game for us. They are going to come out and they are going to play hard. It is probably the hardest game that they will play all season long, which will make it one of the hardest for us as well. You will always have that feeling in the back of your mind like, ‘We have to beat these guys.’ That’s the feeling I always have when we play Kansas.”

— Current Missouri tight end

Michael Egnew

“I remember going to church on Sunday and the priest talking about, ‘Hey, we got KU coming up.’”

— Former MU basketball player Gary Link

“It doesn’t matter if you go 0-10 — you want to beat Kansas. It really hurts to lose against them.”

— Ex-MU wide receiver Tommy Saunders after KU’s 40-37 victory in 2008

Yeah - they're the tiggers you love to hate! Of course they hate us too - it wouldn't be any fun if they didn't.

Norm Stewart has had some juicy quotes when he was coaching Mizzou. Fans would love to tell him to sit down at AFH, which he never did. I remember watching the game between the Jayhawks and Tigers where Mizzou's center, Steve Stiponavich (sp) started fighting with a KU player and the fight went out through the corner of the fieldhouse in the crowd. Unbelievable! Yea, this is no ordinary ball game---no doubt.

Since75 -- You're thinking of Jim Kennedy, not Stiponavich.

It was fueled by a recent battle during the old Holiday Tourney in KCMO where Herb Nobles and Kennedy had on the court chippiness with a dose of racial baiting.

They played shortly afterward in Allen and early in the game Kennedy, Nobles and Donnie Von Moore got into heated smak with name calling ending with Von Moore and Kennedy throwing haymakers on the court finally ending beyond the northwest tunnel. DVM seemed to get the better end of that encounter.

HATE is a strong word for how I feel about Missouri...but not strong enough.

Sagura---I thought for sure it was SS from Missouri. You're probably right. I have been known to make a mistake or two. Von Moore was quite the battler, wasn't he? Those Missouri games were some good memories!

Don Fambrough's quote is the best. By far.

I just want to remind everyone it's pronounced Misery.
