Jayhawks fall in 12 innings

? Oklahoma State’s Davis Duren hit the game-winning single with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 12th inning as Oklahoma State overcame a pair of multi-run deficits in the final four innings to knock off Kansas, 8-7, on Saturday afternoon.

Kansas led 5-2 heading into the bottom of the ninth, and 7-5 in the 11th, but a pair of Cowboy rallies set up Davis’ heroics. Oklahoma State loaded the bases in the final inning on a pair of walks and a single.

Despite Cameron Selik’s sixth quality start of the season, the Jayhawks trailed 2-0 after seven innings, but scored five times in the eighth on a two-run single by Brian Heere and a three-run homer by Tony Thompson. Thompson’s fourth home run of the season broke a 2-2 tie with two outs in the inning.

However, OSU made their first of three late-inning rallies in the ninth, sending eight men to the plate and scoring three times. Third baseman Mark Ginther led off the inning with a double and scored on a throwing error. Designated hitter Josh Botts brought the home team within a run with an RBI single, and Duren tied the game with an RBI base hit past a diving Robby Price.

The Jayhawks scored two runs in the 11th on an RBI double by Jake Marasco and a sacrifice fly by Brett Lisher. But OSU stormed back again, loading the bases with two outs and tying the game when Ginther slapped a single to center field. Oklahoma State first baseman Dean Green was thrown out at third base, but he was ruled out after the tying run had crossed the plate.

Selik went seven innings, allowing two runs on six hits, with a walk and three strikeouts. He did not factor in the decision. KU’s struggling bullpen was shelled for six runs on 10 hits over the final 41/3 innings.

Jimmy Waters led the Jayhawk offense, going 3-for-5 with a run scored, while Heere chipped in a 2-for-6 effort, including the game-tying hit in the eighth inning.

The teams will play the rubber game of the three-game series at 1 p.m. today. The contest can be heard on KLWN (1320 AM).
