Collins, Aldrich earn All-American honors

Sherron Collins was named to the AP All-American second team and Cole Aldrich was named to the third team. The two team leaders will be leaving the school at the end of the year.

Kansas senior guard Sherron Collins and junior center Cole Aldrich both earned Associated Press All-American status Monday.

Collins was named to the AP All-America second team, while Aldrich was a third-team selection.

Kentucky put a pair of players on the first team, as freshman guard John Wall and freshman forward DeMarcus Cousins both made the list. Ohio State's Evan Turner, Syracuse's Wesley Johnson and Villanova's Scottie Reynolds also were first-team selections.

Collins was joined on the second team by Oklahoma State's James Anderson, Maryland's Greivis Vasquez, Duke's Jon Scheyer and West Virginia's Da'Sean Butler.

Earning third-team honors with Aldrich were Georgetown's Greg Monroe, Texas' Damion James, Notre Dame's Luke Harangody and New Mexico's Darington Hobson.

Congrats to them both on outstanding careers & all they've meant to Jayhawk Nation.

Here's a link of an interview with Josh Selby discussing his future and where he might land:

Kye Clark 9 years, 11 months ago

I'm sorry, but Scottie Reynolds as 1st team is a joke

Don Everett 9 years, 11 months ago

Congrats to both Sherron and Cole.

I agree, Scottie Reynolds is as overrated as anyone I can think of the past few years.

eway12 9 years, 11 months ago

Congratulations Sherron and Cole! All those that keep saying Cole had an average or sub-par season are out of their minds. Most games he dominated defensively and if there were an assist stat for opening shots for teammates by drawing double teams then he would have led the conference in assists. Is there a reason the 2nd team is the guard team and the 3rd team is the "bigs" team?

eway12 9 years, 11 months ago

Agree about Reynolds. I'd take anybody on 2nd team and Aldrich and Monroe and James before him.

Jesse Newell 9 years, 11 months ago

eway — I believe it's done by votes, so the top five vote-getters are first team, the next five vote-getters are second team, etc.

jhokfan 9 years, 11 months ago

In spite of this years disappointment, when it's all said and done Sherron has a lot to be proud of. All-America, 4 conference titles, 1 national title and a diploma.

Hope he gets rewarded with a big fat NBA contract.

KULA 9 years, 11 months ago

How can you guys say Scottie Reynolds is over-rated? He's from the BIG EAST, BAY--BEE!!!

KULA 9 years, 11 months ago

ps--if the Morrises had gone to Villanova, they'd have both been voted All Americans this year.

Kye Clark 9 years, 11 months ago

KULA - if the Morrises had gone to Nova, they might be in the Final 4. I'll never understand Jay Wright fielding a starting line-up of 4 guards seemingly every year.

Ryan Mullen 9 years, 11 months ago

Love Cole, Love Sherron, but both regressed this year. I cannot explain it but too them they both had subpar years.

Clarence Haynes 9 years, 11 months ago

icthawkfan316 thanks for the tip on the Shelby interview.....The interviewer Erin Ashley needs to be recruited by the William Allen White Journalism School!

And I don't want to here about how Cole is a defensive player, almost all the big guys he faced this year took him to the wood shed not too mention the fat bald Northern Iowa player. His offensive numbers where down and all his blocks came agaist smaller opponents. Sherron was a turnover machine and was either brilliant with ball or just plain made stupid plays. Sorry both underachieved as far as I am concerned.

caddie733 9 years, 11 months ago

klineisanazi...i agree on pullen, that is surprising.

I know this will ruffle some feathers, but I think Bill Simmons had pretty good takes on Cole and Sherron:

"Cole Aldrich in that same game. He had been playing with Collins for the past three years. He's a lottery pick. He should have been able to dominate Northern Iowa down low, Samhan-style. But it wasn't in him. Not his style. He finished with typically solid numbers (13 points, 10 rebounds, two blocks, 6-for-8 shooting) and never once made you say, "This guy REFUSES to let Kansas die!" I didn't hold it against him. In the words of Denny Green, Cole Aldrich was who we thought he was: a complementary center who challenges shots, rebounds and scores if he gets good position. He's Joel Przybilla 2.0. And you wouldn't want Joel Przybilla trying to save you from the biggest upset in 16 years … right?"

"Sherron Collins' stink bomb in the Northern Iowa game. Collins wasn't the only reason Kansas lost -- I still blame Bill Self for allowing an underdog to control the tempo and not pressuring them with a superior crew of athletes -- but his "I live for the big moments!" résumé was basically tossed in the garbage. He kept chucking up bricks and refusing to defer to his teammates, making him the worst kind of bad: stubbornly bad. That one game cemented my already forming (and dissenting) opinion on him. If you're trying to find a complementary player -- which is what Collins would be in the pros -- it can't be a limited guy with an inflated view of his own talents. Remember in last night's Xavier-Kansas State game when Pullen wasn't feeling it in the second half and turned the scoring burden over to Denis Clemente for a few minutes? That's what winners do. They don't keep chucking it up."

Agree with all of this, loved both Sherron and Cole, but sadly, these statements feel true.

John Randall 9 years, 11 months ago

Am I missing something? 2nd team doesn't have any front-court, 3rd has nothing but ???

John Randall 9 years, 11 months ago

The complaints on Sherron "hogging the show" completely ignore the fact that the coach and the whole team expected it to be that way. Not only expected it, but insisted on it.

Time after time, Sherron would start a set play, pass to the center or a wing, cut to his assigned position and when he received the ball the next time, NO ONE ELSE was still running the play. They had all stopped to watch. Someone had to do something, and by then all other options were gone.

Either force a pass where teammate should be or take a shot he'd rather not.

Congrats, Sherron!!! Congrats, Cole!!!

That is one aweful interview to listen to (the interview on Box of Mess).

KY_Cats1 9 years, 11 months ago

Well, at least the Great Wall of Kentucky and Cousins made 1st Team AA as expected. Too bad the refs in the NCAA tourney took away from them their destiny of a national championship. The best record in the country for 2010 is all they now have to show. The future of UK basketball is bright however. We cannot wait until next season starts!

On a side note, I would like to say to all of you who were nice enough to e-mail after this weekend's game that I love each and every one of you too. A bit of advice however. Either learn to spell correctly or at least use spell check. If some of your notes are any indication of the Kansas educational system, it is even worse than I would have ever guessed.

86finalfour 9 years, 10 months ago

You're blaming the refs for that loss to WV? What?! Are you serious? HA!! Did you even watch the game? They lost because they couldn't shoot to save their lives! I watched the whole game, and to be honest, I was fascinated to watch just how cold a team with such talent could shoot. Honestly, I've never seen a team shoot so coldly in a game with teams evenly matched. I along with everyone knows, UK is more talented than the Mountaineers. But they couldn't hit the broad side of a barn that night -- That's the tourney. Don't you know that by now? Pathetic, whiny, sore loser you are to blame the guys in stripes. Hilarious, actually....

Kye Clark 9 years, 11 months ago

Hilarious! Wondered how long it would take for KY_jelly, er, I mean KY_Cats1 to come on here crying about the officiating. Instead of blaming the refs, how about blaming your players for not being able to hit the abundance of free throws they were given. Or your coach (I use the term loosely) for not teaching players how to shoot free throws and having it cost him...again! If anything the officials tried to give that game to Kensucky, with the ridiculous over-and-back call and non-call. I do see you have a bit of a point though, Cousins probably isn't called for a foul in your scrimages when he open-handed nut slaps another player. They probably like it in Kentucky.

Turk 9 years, 11 months ago

Scotty Reynolds is no more a 1st team all american than I am. Same for Cousins. We are all waiting for the NCAA to start the sanctions against KY. Good luck Cole in the NBA. Comment from KY intelect about the KS. educational system is very much hitting below the belt. jUST HOW DOES ky HAVE THE BEST RECORD. iF i RECALL THEY LOST 3 GAMES LIKE ks.

Mike Skiles 9 years, 11 months ago

LOL that the Kentucky fans are calling KU's educational system into question.......this from a school whose B-ball team graduates less than 40% of its participants, and that is AFTER you remove the 'one and done's' from the mix?! Ky can look forward to next season, after all Cal may jump to NBA under threat of NCAA investigation, eh?

Best wishes to Sherron and Cole at the next level.

Sparko 9 years, 11 months ago

Reynolds can play; his slump was the main reason Villanova tanked at the end of the season. Collins had a similar season. Both players were pretty gassed by the end of the season. To many minutes and man-to-man defense.

Kye Clark 9 years, 11 months ago

Sparko - not saying Reynolds is not a good player, just that he is no 1st team all-american

Woody Cragg 9 years, 11 months ago

Icthawkfan- Ole KY Jelly just can't stay away. Behavior patterns are quite predictable aren't they? And he (I guess) likes to talk all that smack about "haters" too. Perhaps even pathalogical as well. Heck he's probably more edgamacated that we are. What a sorry poster. Probably has absolutely no life whatsoever. Reminds me of the comic book "Sad Sack." Hope that's all and it's not Hannibil in disguise (or drag). Glad we're not waiting on next year for a good time. Maybe ole Cousins would give him (it) a squeeze for a REAL good time, or tell him he's got a pretty mouth.

leenyong 9 years, 11 months ago

Congrats to both. Well-deserved recognition.

Goldenhawk 9 years, 11 months ago

Congratulations to both. Too bad it ended with UNI. I thought both of these players at times were 1st team all Americans and for some reason regressed during the end of the season.

@ichtahawk...great link man. Obviously that girl wasn't the most experienced interviewer but she really did do her homework and asked about every question i could possibly think of asking him myself...even the Worldwide Wes talk. Great job girl haha! Everyone should check out that link. Man it'd be freaking awesome if Doron Lamb comes with him, assuming X leaves!

ABeesus 9 years, 10 months ago

Poor, ole alley KY_Cats1 to have no friends here, and no team there.

ChicagoJHawk 9 years, 10 months ago

After you guaranteed that KY would win the "2009-2010 national championship" as you called it, don't you feel a little stupid coming here & still trying to talk trash?? You just don't know when to keep your mouth shut do you? Like ralster said, go back @ look @ the rankings, in terms of education, for the 64 tournament teams - University of Kansas - #1! So how are you going to come out & say how KY's education is better too??

Your scumbag coach not only doesn't believe in free throws, but doesn't believe in complying with NCAA rules either! He had both his final fours vacated by the NCAA & the entire 2007-2008 season @ Memphis erased. What makes you think the same thing won't happen to UK?

Face it, you guys got desperate and hired Calipari, despite knowing how shady the guy is. You guys have a lot of history and tradition too but it's fans like you that make your program look bad.
