FINAL: KU defeats TTU, 80-68

Aldrich with a nifty move inside, putting in a soft layup off the glass. Cohadarevic misses a long jumper, and with just two minutes left, KU’s 12-point lead should be safe.

Collins drives, then dishes to Reed in the lane for a layup. Self claps his hands in satisfaction.

The Rock Chalk Chant starts with just under a minute left.

C.J. Henry checks into the game for his first action in a long time. He was injured early in the Big 12 season.

KU wraps up an 80-68 victory.

KU 73/TTU 63 — 3:40 left in game

Cohadarevic puts in a tough turn-around. He’s up to 14 points on 7-for-10 shooting after barely touching the court yesterday against Colorado.

Aldrich travels, and Self yells at his team, “Get back! Get back!” after the ball is inbounded. Roberson still beats KU down the court, wiggling around Taylor for a layup with a foul. Self screams in frustration, then calls timeout to try to (again) refocus his team.

KU’s two best players step up with the lead down to two. Aldrich picks off an offensive rebound, and Collins turns it into points with a three from the wing.

Following a TTU turnover, KU finds Xavier Henry in the corner, and he buries the three. The quick 6-0 spurt boosts KU’s lead to eight, and after TTU calls its final timeout, Collins urges the KU fans to rise to their feet.

Collins adds two free throws, and KU has turned its game up at the right time.

KU 64/TTU 59 — 6:58 left in game

Vicious block by Aldrich, who pins the ball against the glass. Markieff takes a charge, and the defensive plays have given KU some momentum.

Taylor dishes to Xavier Henry, who buries a three from the left wing. KU extends its lead to 10 briefly.

The Jayhawks are trying to play at a frantic pace offensively, and Self holds up both palms, telling his team to settle down.

Collins is whistled for his fourth foul on a defensive rebound attempt. The senior guard is rarely in foul trouble, but he’ll go to the bench with 8:10 left.

Nice pass by Markieff Morris, who dropped a nice pass to Morningstar on a backdoor cut to get KU an easy layup.

Another nice pass by Markieff, as he lofts the ball over the defense to Aldrich for a two.

KU gets beat down the court after the two — a rarity with a Self team — and Roberts slams it home. Self calls timeout. Tech isn’t fading away.

KU 53/TTU 45 — 11:55 left in game

Xavier Henry with a steal, and he finishes on the other end with a layup. Perhaps his last three will get him going defensively, too.

Perhaps the strategy of having Aldrich try to score over a defender isn’t unsound. Aldrich has been getting the ball deep in the lane, but he’s had trouble getting his shot in over the big body Cohadarevic.

Collins once again gives KU a spark, dribbling into the lane before kicking out to Morningstar for a three. Collins has an extra burst in his step, perhaps because he rested to much in the first half.

Cohadarevic hammers Markieff hard on a layup try, and it starts a jawing session between KU and TTU’s players. Markieff has some words for Cohadarevic, and Marcus Morris delivers talks some as well to defend his brother. Collins pulls Markieff Morris back before getting back up in Cohadarevic’s face to let him know the act wasn’t appreciated.

Roberts and Marcus Morris pick up off-setting technical fouls. Is that Marcus’ first technical all year?

Marcus gets called for a moving screen, and that’s a double whammy for KU. Not only is it Marcus’ fourth foul, it also wipes away a three-pointer by Reed. Self yells across the court at the official, saying, “You’ve got to be kidding me!”

KU 47/TTU 37 — 15:54 left in game

Xavier Henry finally gets a three to go down, and his face says it all. The freshman pushes out a deep exhale after his shot goes through, and instead of feeling excitement, you can tell he feels relief for finally getting one to go down.

KU 44/TTU 34 — 17:26 left in game

Collins looks refreshed after sitting for a while with three fouls, putting in a three to start the second half. Marcus Morris follows with a 16-foot jumper. Collins curls around a screen and hits a shot from the elbow. The Jayhawks look bouncier offensively, if that makes any sense.

Xavier Henry misses a three, but Marcus Morris is underneath to grab the offensive rebound and stick it back in for two. The crowd comes to life for the first time all day.

Tyshawn Taylor is bailed out with a whistle on his layup attempt (looked like a clean block from Singletary), and KU has scored on its first five possessions of the second half.

KU scoring — Collins 9, Marcus Morris 7, Aldrich 7, Markieff Morris 6, X. Henry 2, Reed 2, Taylor 1.

KU was 10-for-28 from the floor (35.7 percent), 2-for-7 from three (28.6 percent) and 12-for-13 from the free-throw line (92.3 percent).

TTU was 12-for-30 from the floor (40 percent), 1-for-7 from three (14.3 percent) and 7-for-10 from the free-throw line (70 percent).

KU had eight first-half turnovers, while TTU had seven. Both teams had 20 rebounds.

One other stat of note:

KU had just three offensive rebounds in the first half. The Jayhawks had 19 offensive rebounds in their first matchup against the Red Raiders.

KU 34/TTU 32 — Halftime

D’Walyn Roberts hits a free throw, and Singletary puts in a reverse layup to tie the score. Self calls timeout.

Two bad possessions in a row for Thomas Robinson, who turns it over with a bad pass before blowing a wide-open layup in transition on the next poessession. Self has no choice but to check Aldrich back in.

Big momentum swing, as Markieff Morris goaltends a Cohadarevic layup, but the officials don’t call it. Knight goes nuts on the sidelines (as he should), jumping up and down and waving his hands side to side. Markieff is fouled in transition, and his free throws give KU a four-point swing.

Another layup inside for Markieff. His teammates have set him up well, but he’s been KU’s best finisher in the paint so far today.

Without Collins in there, KU looks disorganized on its final shot attempt. Reed finally drives, but his layup attempt is well off.

The Jayhawks take a slim two-point lead into the break.

KU 28/TTU 25 — 3:57 left in 1st half

KU’s quick run a few minutes ago won’t be the knockout blow. Roberson rises up for a three, and after a turnover by Xavier Henry, Reese puts in a layup with a foul. Suddenly, TTU is down just two again.

Xavier Henry tries a drive, but he’s called for a charge. Self immediately checks him out, asking him why he didn’t kick a pass out to the perimeter after getting into the lane. On the sideline, Self looks like he’s watching a team he doesn’t recognize when viewing his team today.

Both teams can’t get open shots to go down. TTU is just 1-for-6 from three (16.7 percent) after making 39 percent of its threes in Big 12 play.

Collins fouls Nick Okorie on a three, and that’s three fouls on Collins.

Markieff gets a three-second-in-the-lane violation. KU has been unlucky with that call this year.

KU 25/TTU 17 — 7:52 left in 1st half

This might be the quietest full crowd I’ve ever heard. KU fans, for some reason, tend to be nearly silent when they travel to K.C.

Markieff Morris misses a layup, and KU has gone 4 1/2 minutes without scoring a point.

Collins is fouled on a drive, and his free throws break KU’s scoreless string.

TTU’s Brad Reese misses a one-handed slam, and the ball caroms all the way back to mid-court. Cohadarevic later turns it over, and he sits on the court for a few extended seconds, showing up the officials. I don’t think they appreciated that.

It took a few minutes, but Collins has found his form. He drives in, finding Marcus for a layup, then on the next possession takes it all the way to the rim for two.

In transition, Brady Morningstar finds the hot hand on the wing, and Collins buries the three.

A weird sequence follows. TTU calls timeout. Coach Pat Knight barrels three-fourths of the way across the court to yell at an official. Knight immediately gets T’ed up. That’s a bad technical at a bad time for TTU, which was hanging in this game. KU has enough of an advantage without getting free points.

Collins puts in both technical free throws, and he’s on a personal 7-0 run in this game.

KU 14/TTU 13 — 11:41 left in 1st half

Tyrel Reed with the poke away defensively, and Marcus Morris works on a layup drilll, missing two guarded ones inside before getting the third to go down.

The two reverse roles the next possession, as Marcus saves the ball from going out of bounds for a steal and Reed gets a two on the other end.

Sloppy play by both teams so far. TTU has four turnovers and KU has three. Both teams are trying to play fast, but neither are valuing the basketball particularly well.

Singletary rattles in a tough 18-foot jumper. He told me after yesterday’s game that he believed he would rely more on his jump shot than his driving against KU because of the Jayhawks’ many strong shot-blockers in the lane.

KU 10/TTU 9 — 15:27 left in 1st half

Right from the tip, Kansas tries to establish its presence inside. Cole Aldrich is fed the ball in the paint, and he hits a turnaround hook with a foul.

Marcus Morris follows with a three-pointer from up top, and KU has a 6-0 lead.

Sherron Collins gets away with a travel, but he turns it over anyway, throwing a pass to John Roberson, who finishes on the other end with a layup. When was the last time Collins started a game well? I honestly can’t remember.

Collins turns it over again, and once again it turns into easy points for TTU, as Mike Singletary gets an uncontested jam.

TTU is chosing to not double-team Aldrich in the post. We’ll see if that affects how KU attacks the Red Raiders offensively.

TTU’s Darko Cohadarevic spins around Aldrich for a layup, and KU coach Bill Self yells at Aldrich, telling him to “pull his head out.” The coach isn’t happy with his big man early.

11:30 a.m.

Great KU contingent here. We aren't full yet, though, with lots of empties left in the upper deck. Maybe those are the tickets the scalpers were holding.

11:20 a.m.

The Missouri loss has resulted in tons of available tickets out there. While walking toward Sprint Center, I'm not sure I've ever seen so many scalpers with so many available tickets. That should benefit any KU fans looking to get tickets for Friday or Saturday's games.

10:44 a.m.

Hello, if anyone has access to ESPN360 could you tell me the gameid of the KU game? It should be four digits starting with 6 or 7. I could try entering that into the European version and see if it works. Thanks in advance!

Philip Garver 10 years, 7 months ago

I'm afraid Singletary will go off today, because the 'Hawks shut him out in the first meeting. I doubt that he has scored zero too many times in his life.

Throughout Big 12 history, it seems when a lesser team beats us, they have had one player just go crazy on the Mighty Jayhawks and score a career high.

Motivation appears high this year, knowing what could happen if they try to coast through. Hawks 84 - Raiders 66. Could also allow TRob, EJ and Withey to pick up a few minutes to rest the main rotation of players.

Does any KU Fan know where one can listen to radio broadcast on the internet? Oddly, has blacked out the program for today's game. So is there any other place that on the internet that will play radio broadcast? And why is it blacked out? The royals games have radio on for free for every game. Why doesn't KU have that??!!

Any info would be much appreciated!!

Were going to be a Sweet 16 team and that's it if Sherron keeps playing like this. I know nobody wants to admit it, but Sherron's whole season has been a disappointment. Coach Self can say his legacy is all about winning but that won't be a consolation to Sherron or his teammates if they bow out early in the tourney. Hope he can turn it around. RCJH

BCRavenJHawkfan 10 years, 7 months ago

86finalfour: It has something to do with the station contract with KU radio network. I was streaming the audio from KFH radio out of Wichita for pregame and they went to terminal commercial programming about 30 minutes before tip.

Alec White 10 years, 7 months ago

Can someone tell the Morris twins you're supposed to make your lay-ups? And why hasn't Cole gotten a touch in the last 10 min? And please put Reed in for Tyshawn or X.

Alec White 10 years, 7 months ago

That's three on Sherron, glad the official bailed out a Tech player for kicking out his leg on the jump shot.

Robert Murphy 10 years, 7 months ago

This is the no. 1 team in the country? X just made another NBA play. Not. Aldrich dribbles more than our point guard and Collins can stay on the bench as far as I'm concerned. At least we might get to see some of athletic players like Robinson. For the most part this team isn't worth watching. Another win by 20 against a team that might not make the NIT. Watch out for Oklahoma State. Maybe you guys like to watch them pay like losers for 15 or 20 minutes of every game but I hate it.

Alec White 10 years, 7 months ago

I guess it's worthless to criticize a team when not one player can convert a lay-up. I really thought we would come out fired up but that's the story of this KU team---disappoint but still manage to get the W. Unfortunately that won't work in a few weeks. I have a feeling that most KU fans are going to be nautious for every game in the tournament.

kennethst 10 years, 7 months ago

Very frustrating of the worst this year. Lets hope they can regroup.....because I thought the looked awful.

BCRavenJHawkfan 10 years, 7 months ago

Does not help that we seem to be playing in the Nelson Atkins Museum rather than the Sprint Center.

Good news is that in the second half Texas Tech gets the crappy basket.

TtownHawk 10 years, 7 months ago

Don't know if this has been brought up, but could the early start time be affecting us? Seems like we're sluggish and going through the motions.

Oh and Sherrons 3rd foul was complete BS, reffing has been below avg both ways

David Howell 10 years, 7 months ago

Simply pathetic .........

Collins sucks, Cole has no offense. Like someone else said, no body is playing worth a crap. We look like a jr. high team attempting layups and apparently Self has no answers. That is disturbing in itself !

I'd really hate to see our 2000th victory come this ugly. I am sorry, but we haven't fixed enough of the problems with our squad to make a very deep run this year. We play in little spurts and a good team playing great for the whole game will kick our butt with ease (see OSU embarassment game).

Sorry, but that is my pessimistic side coming out. I rarely have an optimistic side.

number1jayhawker 10 years, 7 months ago

Jesse is right. I don't recall any other team being called for the 3 second violation, but KU has been called for it every other game.

Alec White 10 years, 7 months ago

I know it really makes me look bad, but what's with the Sherron bashing? I said earlier he was terrible---and at that time he had 2 TO with no points---but now he has 9 pts on three shots attempts with two assists which is pretty good in my opinion. I know I'm optimistic but the team got rolling with Sherron back in so I think we roll in the 2nd half.

trueblue9 10 years, 7 months ago

Open letter to the lockerroom:

Tyshawn: You suck. You have the worst body language out of any player I've ever seen. You just decide that its your turn to shoot and drive to the right for your scoop right hand shot which you make about half the time.

Sharron: Please settle down. Stop turning it over. Stop allowing the other team to kick you when they are shooting 3 pointers.

X: Go out in the hallway and practice dribbling with your right hand. Trust me, this will help you in the pros.

Cole: Stand up big man. I mean right now. Then go around the room and punch each one of your teammates who continue to refuse to give you the ball. And learn a decent post move or two before your pro tyouts.

Twins: Dunk the effing ball. I'm actually ok with you shooting 3s from the top of the key, however from the wings, not so much. You both should be dominating your collective counterparts.

Brady and Tyrel: We don't pay for your books for you to dribble or create.

TRob: Turn in your sneakers and shorts, you won't see the court again this season. Whithey must be a better option at this point.

Robert Murphy 10 years, 7 months ago

Sh-t, p-ss, fu-k, what are the other four words you're not allowed to say here? To let you know my mouth is not involved in any way. Where is George Carlin when you need him? Dead and buried like all of the great ones who some will never get. In case you are wondering I got caught by the electronic word police saying the Hawks are playing like sh-t.

Alec White 10 years, 7 months ago

trueblue, now those are honest words my friend...hopefully Bill can relay those messages to the players because they are spot on...maybe in a little more positive tone though :)

Jim Darnall 10 years, 7 months ago

I hope everyone (The announcers) would quit building the Jayhwks up all the time . Let's face it . Despite them winning they have not played a whole game focused for weeks. Collins as senior leader- 2 quick turnovers and 3 fouls in the first half is inexcusable. THey play like their watching the game half the time instead of playing. I was certainly embarrased at their play the first half. They, ingluding Collins need to get their heads on and Self hould have them in the right frame of mind at the start of every game.

okiedave 10 years, 7 months ago

TT has the motivation - win or their season is done.

KU has a guaranteed 1st round NCAA playoff contract and, therefore, difficult to generate motivation and playing like it.

The lack of motivation issue must be corrected or we may not see the sweet 16.

However, give the players a break, they are up at half.

Redlandsjhawk 10 years, 7 months ago

Did Pat Knight really say if we get up by 16 it's over??!! Good let's get up by 16!

Joe Joseph 10 years, 7 months ago

When is the "Cole doesn't have enough touches and shots" story going to NOT be a story. When it happens every game, it's not a story anymore.

Alec White 10 years, 7 months ago

Why do we let Darko have open jump shots? He will obviously make them and every time he does put in the floor he turns it over. C'mon Bill, lets switch up how we guard him! Collins is playing great ball too.

Chuck Wagstaff 10 years, 7 months ago

B. S. call - typical Big 8 / 12 officiating.

Alec White 10 years, 7 months ago

Yea, Markieff, I'd be pissed to if Darko Coharvichakdichivic was outplaying me too. Stop acting like your someone hard@ss...just play ball. Good to see Marcus and Darko make up for it.

Joe Joseph 10 years, 7 months ago

Go away Texas-Tech! LOOK AT YOU! You're TEXAS-TECH!

86finalfour 10 years, 7 months ago

poor officiating is keeping TT in this game.

Alec White 10 years, 7 months ago

Just a bad call right there---Collins and the Tech player were hooked and he tried to run back on D and fell.

Alec White 10 years, 7 months ago

We're helping out on D when it isn't necessary which is leading to wide open threes that they're knocking down. Yea, TT is playing better than they have all year but our decisions on defense are piss poor right now.

Ted Toulouse 10 years, 7 months ago

Tyshawn is a lazy b*tch! I'm tired of seeing him take plays off and getting out hustled CONSTANTLY!

Sherron has made me eat my words...he has played maybe more of a complete game than I've seen him play. He's made his open shots, free-throws, played under control, and made some great passes. Brady with some great passes also...finally KU is giving me room to breathe!!!

Alec White 10 years, 7 months ago

phew...thanks Texas Tech for giving us a great game. Hopefully this will make us realize that every game is of the utmost importance. We played pretty good in the second half as did Tech, but we really need to turn up the defensive pressure. RCJH

ParisHawk 10 years, 7 months ago

Thanks to ESPN360 in Europe for not carrying this game. I guess they got tired of the ugliness.

kennethst 10 years, 7 months ago

Some good momnets.....but all in all a pretty bad performance. Yet.....we still win. I have given up trying to interpret if that is good or bad.

If KU plays like this next week.....and #16 to could them out. You never know.

I give credit to TT.....but KU shooting in the first half was terrible.

Ugly win.....but I'll take it!

Mike Kendall 10 years, 7 months ago

Glad we won. I guess we won ugly. Didn't get to see the game. Had to work. That sucks. I am glad Syracuse lost. It would be nice if Kentucky lost, too. Wouldn't mind if K-State lost tonight. I want KU to play O-State for the Championship. Continued good luck, Jayhawks! Rock Chalk!

Two Thousand Wins:

Thanks JLW for the coverage & contest.

Let's get 8 more... then party on Mass Street.

Jim Darnall 10 years, 7 months ago

I think it is pretty bad when the coach has to constantly challenge his players to perform as a number 1 team. I think their heads are extremely swollen and if they don't change their mind set soon they are due to be upset. How sad that would be. I am a firm believer that your focus and efforts should be the best they can be the whole game, every game. I don't see that with this group of kids. I am beginning to look at a lack of coaching on Self's part and I hate to say that. He is a great coach, but he is not getting out of these kids what he should be getting. I am sure everyone is booing me now, but as a life long fan of the Jayhawks, I see a lack of committed drive on their parts. I hope it changes soon.

KULA 10 years, 7 months ago

Man, this team looks WORN OUT! Not back on D, missing bunnies, not even thinking about dunking the ball... Whatever happened to the "the deepest team in the country"? Whatever happened to TRob, EJ & Withey? Here we are in tournament time and coach is afraid to put 'em in for 4-5 minutes. Way to use the regular season to get 'em prepared, coach. I don't see how the team I saw today is going to win 6 games against good competition.

Joel Hood 10 years, 7 months ago

jim - seriously... no really, seriously...????????

kennethst 10 years, 7 months ago

Jimbones....I don't think they are over-confident......something just wasn't clicking today. It was a poor performance. No doubt. But a win is a win.

If today's team shows up next week=TROUBLE

If Saturday's team shows up=NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP

Who knows?.....we'll see.

kennethst 10 years, 7 months ago

PS-KULA....yes....those 4 points TT got when KU was not back on D was terrible.....and very out of character for this team. I don't think I have seen that once all season.

Lets hope they learn.......quickly!!

aplanojayhawk 10 years, 7 months ago

Am I on the wrong message board? I thought this was for KU supporters. But it seems to be mostly for a bunch of name callers. It's one thing to be critical, it's another to be outright offensive to the players you supposedly support. If you want to bash yr own team, please become a Mizzou fan.

Philip Garver 10 years, 7 months ago

I can understand when shots don't fall. I can understand when athletic people from other teams hit tough shots.I can understand that other teams play over their heads when inspired at a chance to knock off the top team. But, I don't understand less than high intensity on defense and getting beat down the floor while on defense.

kennethst 10 years, 7 months ago

aplanojayhawk-I agree. Calling out players is bad.

The team together was poor today.....but it doesn't mean they will be tomorrow.

And let's remember some of the poor play is due to Texas Tech playing really well. Can't forget that.

aplanojayhawk is right.....we(including myself) should be more supportive.

Jim Darnall 10 years, 7 months ago

Hey guys, believe me I am all for them winning, but I want to see consistancy. THis out in la la land attitude for a whole half has got to end. THey are getting into bad habits. It wasn't just today. It has been over the last 10 or 11 games. Go back and look at team stats. You can see a big change. Henry is the only one that has stepped up in the last few games in his scoring average and Collins seems to show up late giving himself a respectful game. Hopefully this will all change thru this tournament and the NCAA tourn.

rawkhawk 10 years, 7 months ago

I'm glad KU woke up and smelled the coffee this morning. It'd be nice if this our one game of the post-season jitters. Congrats on 2000!

Justin Carlson 10 years, 7 months ago

I don't get it? Are these players that spoiled? Are we as fans that spoiled? This is nuts, we cant continue to do this. It is great to credit TT but talk about lazy no energy effort!

BY THE WAY CAN OUR FLIPPING GUARDS FEED COLE?? I dont know but seems more times than not great things happen when the big fella gets touches!!

justinryman 10 years, 7 months ago

Wasn't there a contest on predicting when KU when win it's 2000th game? Wonder if they will announce th winner and how they will determine it if there was more than one person who picked, "first round of conf. tourny"? Wasn't the prize a stereo system or something? Or was I just imagining?

Anyway, CONGRATS KU, players present and past on a fantastic run to 2000. Lets make it 2008, in 2010!!!

Hey apolanojayhawk .. WE all whant them to win and are glad they did, but that doesn't mean they don't deserve a little criticism where it is due. It is all about effort and that is the botton line.

Michael Leiker 10 years, 7 months ago

Can't play your A-game every day...I was happy with KUs play today.

Steve Brown 10 years, 7 months ago

Let's get our reserves, TRob, EJ, CJ, Withey, more playing time in KC Sprint Center, get our trophy and get out of town.

On to the big show where I have preferences who we play.

Game 1: anyone

Game 2: FlState, UTep, Wake, UNLV, N. Iowa- like to avoid NDame, Richmond, Louiville.

Game 3: in St. Louis: Vandy, Mich State, Wisconsin- like to avoid Maryland, Georgetown, Pitt.

Game 4: Purdue, New Mex, Nova - like to avoid Ohio State West Virg.

Game 5&6 in INDY I'll take anyone if we get that far....

kennethst 10 years, 7 months ago

Jimbones-Exactly.....I want consistency.

But if we are winning without consistency......what does it say?

I can't figure it out. but I'm worried an opponent is going to make them pay for it.

Oh well....I guess if they can't win playing consistently....I will accept them winning ugly!

Mike Kendall 10 years, 7 months ago

I think somebody mentioned it on this website a few weeks ago, that when the Post-Season starts, especially the Big Dance part, it's a "different kind of animal," if you will. So, jimbones this is for you-------in the Post-Season, be happy that we won. "Survive and advance!" Look at Syracuse. I look for K-State to have a let down tonight, too. O-State is a hot team right now. This is not a criticism, jimbones! This is what it is. March Madness, baby!

hawk_of_ages 10 years, 7 months ago

Hey, LJW! Stats, please...

You gave us halftime stats. Do I really have to wait till tomorrow to get the full-game stats on this site? You realize it's a 24-hour news cycle, right?

Congrats on win 2k Jayhawks!!! Let's win 8 more this year!!!

Tony Bandle 10 years, 7 months ago

drgnslayr...actually how about a team name of "The Almost Lost Boys"

This team has made it a habit of walking along the precipice. Only two things can fall off or develope a damn good sense of balance.

The 2008 team victories were like fine oil paintings. The 2010 team victories are more like finger paints.

I know it's frustrating to see this team win ugly..sometimes, coyote ugly....but they constantly overcome hot opponents, crappy refs and, most importantly, themselves. There's a certain inner toughness that almost always shows up at just the right time.

I know, I know, it would be great to win these last upcoming eight games by building a 20-0 lead and holding it..but it ain't gonna happen.

So all you Jayhawk fans, fasten your seatbelts, make sure your restraint bar is down and locked 'cause this wild roller coaster ride is just beginning!!!

Rock Chalk Jayhawk KU!!!!!

Thanks, Jesse. Sorry about the whining. It's just a little inconspicuous up there...

Jim Darnall 10 years, 7 months ago

It is nice to win when things don't go the way we plan, but I am sure coach isn't going to accept the fact that the effort needs to be much better. I don't know if there has ever been a very successful coach that didn't demand effort above anything else. If you play hard, give your best and lose, then you can say we got beat by a better team. And oh yes, survive and advance I will take....all the way to the championship if necessary.

Eric Schneider 10 years, 7 months ago

Okay everybody. I think we're reading more into the play then we should. It was an 11:30 AM start. Against a team that just played yesterday. I'm not surprised we came out flat. Especially given the way we manhandled TT the last game. This is not the 2008 team. Nobody in the country is that good this year. But we're still the best team in the country. We've been the only team able to handle the pressure of being #1.

On a side note. Syracuse may have lost Onoaku for the season. If that's the case, the Orange are done. They'll be lucky to get to the Sweet 16.

Justin Carlson 10 years, 7 months ago

Anyone catch the post-game "HCBS" almost pist at cole! This has been the common theme as of late "not wanting to score" "more of a impact" Go back and watch the tapes of the last 6 games guards wont feed him. He has not had more than 9 shot attempts since the A&M game? In that game he only had 10! I need some thoughts!!

Thanks JC

Mike Kendall 10 years, 7 months ago

Wow! Jayhawkfan96----You can't be serious? Onoaku gone for the season? That's a bummer! Is that like John Wall getting injured for Kentucky and would have to miss the rest of the Wildcat games?

kcgregory 10 years, 7 months ago

most of you are embarrassments to ku fans everywhere

RockCaCO3 10 years, 7 months ago

One thing folks dont seem to consider when we play "flat" is that maybe a little bit of credit needs to be given to the other team? It seems a little arrogant to think the flow of the game is entirely dependant on us. And holy crap, we're 30-2! Quit yer bitchin.

Jim Darnall 10 years, 7 months ago

It is obvious some folks here don't care how you play as long as you win. I am glad none of my kids played for a coach like that. That would be a real embarrassment.

BCRavenJHawkfan 10 years, 7 months ago

Well let's all just jump off a limestone cliff somewhere in Northeastern Kansas why don't we.

If anything has been a constant this season, it is that KU has played down to it's competition (although Okie State played up, way up).

Just take from this what is good, Collins played closer to his game today. What should begin to happen now is instead of just one guy have a good game there should be two, then three, all in the same game(s).

RockCaCO3 10 years, 7 months ago

jim, youre right, Self is all hugs and kisses when his players dont perform. My bad.

Jim Darnall 10 years, 7 months ago

There is no bitchin goin on here, just good healthy criticism where it is due.

BCRavenJHawkfan 10 years, 7 months ago

Well JC, From what I saw today Texas Tech was really aggressive with some of the double teaming, and until we demonstrate that we can completely light-it-up from outside everyone is going to sag down. Cole is good but he ain't no Wilt, so it's not like he can go one-on-three like the Dipper could. I would also add, until Cole can make those bunnies in his sleep his team mates will defer to other shot choices. I think part of his problem in that area is bringing the ball down to hip level on those deep inside catches. It allows the defense to react. When he catches it head high, keep it head high and go finish. But what do I know, I toil at a 60 hour a week job for a living.

GilbertAZ 10 years, 7 months ago

Sometimes I wonder why people on this message board are even KU fans. I can't believe how negative some of the posts are. It's just like the game of golf, at the end of the day, they don't ask how, they ask how many. Before this game even started, Jay Williams of ESPN said that one of the hardest things to do is to play a team that played the day before when you didn't. That might sound wierd but it came from someone who played the game. It was a hard game that we WON, yet as always, some of you just have to point out the negative. I'm sure glad we are 30-2 instead of 15-17, otherwise they would have to shut this message board down.

Justin Carlson 10 years, 7 months ago

BC RAVEN....Good thoughts cole's technique. I am just a huge cole fan and always get frustrated when he is workin is arse off for position and gets it! and #10, #4, and #1 reverses the ball and doesnt even look inside! On flip side #14, #12, and the morris' make it their first look! I feel the 1st 3 are a little selfish, and need to look at %'s #4 under 40%, #10 under 40% and #1 around 50%! (over last 6 games) Cole is 60+%!

Linda Daxon 10 years, 7 months ago

Congrats on the 2,000th win. I was there for the 1,000th.
One thing about this year's team, they may win ugly, but they win. I have lived through a bunch of seasons where we would lose a whole handful of games we were supposed to win. This year's only big slip up was OSU, and Tennessee, maybe. We could have easily stumbled at K-State, Colorado, Texas, Texas A&M, etc. but we pulled them all out. I hope we have learned something from each close call or hard fought game, otherwise it will be a very disappointing dance.

BCRavenJHawkfan 10 years, 7 months ago

Absolutely agree JC, I think Cole is by far the best post player in the nation (even if the ESPN guys didn't want to slight the player from Baylor, I WILL). And you correctly identify the guards (#10, #4, #1) inability to get the ball inside as oppossed to Mc, Mk, Tyrel and Brady. Do remember this, Mc and Mk have a height advantage which allows them to pass over the top much better than the others. In fact the best entries have been our guards getting it to Mc or Mk around the free thow line to top of the key and then down to Cole. The other thing about #'s 10, 4, 1, 14, and 12; Tyrel and Brady are A-L-W-A-Y-S looking to pass first shoot second. That is what their game is built on. Sherron is looking to score first, preferably on drives and to possibly get fouled. Xavier has had trouble passing and until recently was reluctant to drive. These are not excuses but just complexities of what THE 5 face. Now, contrast that to something I have observed about Kentucky and Cousins. In what I have seen (probably 10 games) Cousins doesn't get feeds any more than Cole. What Kentucky (or should I say KenLucky as you will see) does, is they get away with using the outside shot as an entry pass. I can't tell you how many times I have seen Cousins seal his guy in the lane and Wall et al throw up a flat arcing shot sure to bound strong to the side Cousins is on. The result, an easy rebound and put back.

"T-Tech Loves and Hates on Thurday Afternoon of the Vilest Week of the Year--Conference Tourney Week:"

~KU got the first of two wins out of this tourney that it needs to get a 1 or 2 seed in the Madness, which is all it needs to win a ring.

~KU separated finally on a day when Self didn't juice them even a little; this means he can get them up for one of the two remaining games, if he has to.

~No injuries, which is the main goal during Conference Tourney week, if you won the regular season.

~24 pts and 11 reebs from our composite All American 4 of Cus and Kieff. These two together are about as consistently productive this season as any 4 in KU history. Nick Collison, if you call him a 4, and Drew Gooden, if you call him a 4, and Julian Wright, had more beasting games their last seasons, but the Cus&Kieff show is likely exceeding their sophmore productions rather handily. What other KU 4, or composite 4, can you recall that tended to put up around 20 pts and 10 reebs per game their sophmore years?

~Tyshawn and Brady making no TOs. Loved because KU needs nothing but defense and zero TOs out of the 2 when Sherron, Xavier and the Twins are clicking.

~Cole pleicostomizing 18 off the glass. Even though TTech had no great board men, it is still amazing to grab 18.

~72% from the 501.c.3 stripe. Good charitable shooting, but not so good that we're due a horror night to shoot back to our average.

~Thomas Robinson playing 4 substitute minutes and 1 clean-up minute and making only one TO and no fouls. Admittedly TTech was weak inside, and admittedly TRob was not a force, despite 2 blocks, but he didn't cost us much, when he was in, and that means his trend line keeps creeping up. If Self can get two more games of 5 minutes each out of TRob, then TRob should be ready for his 5-10 minute moment in the Madness. It is not easy being patient as an understudy on Broadway must be, but when the big moment comes, a player has to be ready to seize it, because that is the spring board to the following season of stardom. Hang in TRob. Self apparently believes you are the stronger and more suited to combat of the two of you for the Madness.

~50% trifectation.

jaybate 10 years, 7 months ago

~50% trifectation--I dread wasting a 50% trey shooting game on the TTech's of the world in a first round of any tourney. It almost guaranties KU has to play grind it out for one, or both, of the next two games and will probably lose one of those to a good team having a hot night.

~Red Raiders written in white letters on the backs of the TTech jerseys, where players names should go. Leaving player names off jerseys is an unpersuasive and cliched gesture. If you're going to keep doing it, Pat, make it new somehow. Put the name of every player on the team on every jersey. Put the woman's name that the team vote's sexiest woman alive on the backs of every jersey. Put the players name on his jersey once he makes a certain number of assists. Be creative. Make it fresh.

~ Tyshawn clearly is backsliding into BADD (Basketball Attention Deficit Disorder). He's going to hurt us against a good team. Fortunately, Brady seems to be starting a long slow climb out of his slump.

~Cole playing 29 minutes in the easy game of a 3 game tourney--4-9 minutes too much.

~Ditto Xavier.

~Just hate having to waste time in these stupid conference tournaments. Increase the Madness to 128, or even 256, and consign these conference tourneys with no function other than money grubbing to the ash heap of history.

BCRavenJHawkfan 10 years, 7 months ago

jaybate: Or in the case of Texas Tech put the name of the coach on the back of every jersey.........or the coaches dad?

Jack Wilson 10 years, 7 months ago

Today's game was a microcosm of the season. This IS the 2009-2010 Kansas Jayhawks. I guess I really don't fear the games against Syracuse, or Kentucky, or any top 10. team. It is the next level, the Oklahoma St, Marquette, Louisville, Georgia Tech, BYU, Northern Iowa, Clemson, Wake Forest, etc.

This team has demonstrated that they can ratchet it up when needed. It just seems that they continue to play a few notches below where they should. But they win and continue to win. 1 down, 8 to go.

KGphoto 10 years, 7 months ago

Ha. Very nice jb. But good luck halting a money grab. Besides, the conference tournament is only a waste of time if you are a lock #1 seed. 95% of the teams need a good tourney performance to improve their seeding, or even to play themselves in. Ask Wofford if the conference championship means something.

KGphoto 10 years, 7 months ago

... Wofford will never win anything else. If you eliminate the conference championships and expand the dance field to infinity, how many schools are going to miss out on a chance to win something? A great story like Wofford will become extinct. The Woffords will go quietly into a lump of 128.

Jim Dickerson 10 years, 7 months ago

For those thinking that the conf tournys are a money grab, may I refer you to the Michigan- Iowa game. It appeared that empty seats outnumbed the occupied seat by about 10 to one. I doubt that the crowd would cover the light bill for the game.

MrPilot 10 years, 7 months ago

Onward and upward, Jayhawks! Two more wins and we can ride in style to the Big Dance.

Rock Chalk!

KULee 10 years, 7 months ago

Put a W in the books, move on, that is what this time of year is all about. Even though we all know so much more than a National Championship Coach, we might want to try to look at the upside, it is a win....

Redlandsjhawk 10 years, 7 months ago

Jaybate I agree with you in regards to conf tourneys as would Jim Boeheim I'm guessing.

James122 10 years, 7 months ago

Good-we won 80-68 Bad-Didn't feed the ball to Cole enough 6 attempts for the game Ugly-14 TO's, we look slow and played with little engery as a team

  • / - of player

+= pts, rebounds, blocks, assists, steals - = missed fg, missed 3's, missed ft's and to's

  1. Cole Alfrich----------30 pts
  2. Sherron Collins----17 pts
  3. Markieff Morris-----13 pts
  4. X-------------------------12 pts
  5. Marcus Morris------10 pts
  6. Brady Morningstar-8 pts
  7. Tyrel Reed-----------2 pts
  8. Tyshawn Taylor----1 pt
  9. Thomas Robinson-2 pts--played 5 minutes

Overall: We looked very poor, to many to's, and made bad decisions on our shots and passing. Thank goodness that Cole played well in the paint along with Markieff. To win 6 tourney games we must come with more engery for the whole game or we will have a short time their.

UNC will be scary good next year but his days of recruiting that UNC is always a top 10 team and always in upper reaches of ACC are over....

"Some Ways You Can Tell Roy Is at .500 at the End of the Season"

Wears "I Heart NIT" sticker on lapel of baby blue Sears double knit blazer.

Hums "I'm in a New York State of Mind" while shaving near his jugular vein with a straight edge razor.

Practices hailing cabs in front of Wanda's vanity wearing nothing but support stockings.

Amazon's a book titled "How to Tour NYC on $20 a Minute."

Makes assistants watch "Guys and Dolls" with him 16 straight times, once far each loss of the season.

Lets Dean sign him up for Vinny Scallopini's East River Cruise Boat--a retrofitted garbage barge--and lets Dean measure him for what Sonny Vacarro keeps calling Addidas new concrete tennis shoe line.

Keeps crying to Jerrod and saying, "Who recruited these losers, anyway?"

Keeps seeing Dean up in the rafters of the Dean Dome with an acetylene torch cutting a girder directly above Roy's seat on the bench.

Looks up Haiti on a map.

I'd rather go to 256 than play a conference tourney but I'll bet my house that the last 4 out will be complaining about how they got screwed.

I pray to the basketball gods that no one gets hurt before and during the big dance.

kennethst 10 years, 7 months ago

Jaybate is HILARIOUS!!

On this expansion of the 64 team tournement.....why can't they leave well enouhgh alone???

I know it's all about $$$ .....but come on.......maybe they should just let every Div I team in, regardless of their record......Heck....why stop there? Lets put every college team in!! Maybe even some high schooll and Jr high teams!

Ah well.....I'm enjoying my scotch too much to worry about it at the moment.....went with a JB Rare.....excellent. Then again.....what Scotch isn't??

PS-Jhokfan is so right....let's hope nobody gets hurt before the big show.

kennethst 10 years, 7 months ago

PPS-I know this "Roy Issue" has been beaten to death.....but I'm sorry....I'm still thrilled to see him lose. What a pathetic season he had.....and I love it!!!

Sorry....but I'm still and always will be bitter. It's not that he left,,,,it's the way he left.

If he ever comes back to KU for some kind of award.....I would politely clap for the guy and keep my seat......but he will never get a standing ovation.

NEVER!.......he doesn't deserve least from KU fans.

jhokfan 10 years, 7 months ago

I would give Roy a standing O but I would not extend the courtesy to Dean. No way would I boo him but polite applause is the best I could do.

Aside from generating revenue the conference tourney is of no value to KU. We were the overall number 1 seed going in but could possibly play ourselves out of that seed. Plus we ended the season with dominating wins over KSU and MU. How much better can we improve our confidence? I just hope we are healthy as the basketball gods have not been particularly kind to us over the years (Marshall 86, Haase 97, Simien 03). Being a good team is usually not enough. I think you need a little luck to win a championship in any sport.
