Kansas University assistant basketball coach Joe Dooley, left, tests out basketballs with head coach Bill Self at a practice at the 2008 Final Four.

A Foxsports.com report that Kansas University basketball assistant Joe Dooley has been offered the head coaching job at East Carolina apparently is incorrect.
"Nothing has been offered. Nothing is imminent at all. (They are) still gauging interest," KU coach Bill Self said Monday after speaking with Dooley before practice.
Dooley has already served a tenure as East Carolina coach. He was 57-52 in four seasons at East Carolina. He was fired by the prior administration.
Self has a policy of not letting his assistants discuss other jobs. Self does not have a policy prohibiting assistant coaches from accepting jobs before the end of a current season.

Would that really be a stepping stone for his career? I know I'm biased, but I'd rather be a key part of an elite program, than lead a struggling mid-major (no disrespect)

Maybe if he gets a head job he can buy a sandwich. What does he weigh in this pic?

why would you even consider a mid major gig....that you've already fired from once? it really doesn't make sense.
I know Dooley is an east coast guy, but c'mon. it would seem a GW or a LaSalle gig would be more in line in his career right now.

I'm sure he'd make about $500K more per year. That'd be worth it.

"More than You Need to Know about Joe Dooley"
Joe would be returning to East Carolina. He was a head coach and an assistant there from 1991 to 1999. He had some 17-10 seasons as head coach at ECar, but could not turn the corner. I could not find a story about his firing.
Prior to that Joe Dooley and Eddie Payne were assistants at South Carolina on a fairly impressive George Felton staff for a couple years, before Eddie Payne got the ECar head job and brought Joe with him to ECar. Also on Felton's staff at South Carolina was Tubby Smith. Tubby of course moved onto Tulsa, where Bill Self later coached. Eddie Payne quickly jumped from ECar to Oregon State, and Joe succeeded Eddie Payne at ECar.
Eddie Payne flopped at Oregon State and has fallen to obscurity at Greensborough and Uni. South Carolina Upstate.
Interestingly (and there really is a loose KU tie in to this), Tubby later moved to assist at Kentucky under Pitino, then went to Georgia briefly as head coach, then took over Kentucky when Pitino left. Tubby hired his and Eddie Payne's, and Joe Dooley's old South Carolina head coach George Felton to be his assistant at UK. When Tubby went to Minnesota, George Felton found his way to the San Antonio Spurs, where he became director of collegiate personnel, a title I do not understand the meaning of.
It appears possible that Joe and Self put in a good word for George Felton to get him into the Spurs, which is of course a hot bed of KUers from the LB era.

Bill Self said he got to know and like Joe Dooley as a competing recruiter, while Self was at Tulsa, which was 1997 to 2000. During that period, Joe was first head coach at ECar and then assistant to Fran Fraschilla at New Mexico from '99-02. It was Fraschilla who tried to dig out of the wake of the Prince of Darkness that was Dave Bliss' and his recruiting problems at New Mexico. Joe assisted in that dig out.
The nexus of links connecting Joe with his Jersey roots and a playing career at George Washington and early start with George Felton at South Carolina seem to trace back to Norm Roberts days as Queen's head coach. Roberts, Fran Fraschilla, Eddie Payne, Ritchie McKay and Joe Dooley all seem to move in and out of each other's circles and to coach as either assistants or head coaches at many of the same schools. Roberts coached at Queens before tying his wagon to Self at ORU. Ritchie McKay assisted at Queens under Roberts, then followed Eddie Payne at Oregon State.. Norm started with Self at ORU after 5 years as head coach at Queens College New York. Norm and Fraschilla have coached at St. Johns. Fraschilla, Joe, and Ritchie McKay have coached at New Mexico. Norm's long tenure as Self's assistant apparently introduced Self into this group of New York/New Jersey kids. And one cannot help but wonder if somewhere in the background of all this New York/New Jersey activity is none other than Larry Brown, but I found no confirmation of my speculation.
Regardless, of the social/professional network, Joe's got to successfully turn a mid major around before he gets a shot at a major; that just seems to be the way it goes, unless you are one of Coach K's wildly overrated assistants.
IMHO, it could only help to get a KU man loyal to Self, like Joe Dooley, back into the Carolinas and help brand manage down there with young kids, while he was rebuilding East Carolina.
Frankly, I expected Joe was probably talking to Dean about replacing Roy. :-)

This Joe Dooley story is not news.....rather, the big headline emerging tonight is Ticketmaster coaxing Coach Townsend to accept a top executive position in Ticketmaster's "Free VIP Ticket" Division that underpins the Tickmaster brand marketing arm. Coach T apparently unknowingly passed the Tickmaster "interview" for this job with his very recent and astute handling of the free KU bball tix to blond babe, Samantha Ryan.
Re the above story, don't think Joe will go to ECarolina, if offered. Why would he? A step in the wrong direction.

Thanks for the research, Jaybate. Good stuff for us junkies.

I went to an ECU game in the Dooley era, and I can't imagine him being happy there. Greenville, NC is such a strange and miserable place, it can't compare to Lawrence. Of course, Greenville is known for swinging among the aristocratic elite. Seriously - judges, lawyers, doctors are all part of the Greenville secret sex circles. Dooley would qualify for that crowd, but doubt he'd want to be a part of it.
Anyway, back to bball. The arena is empty most of the time and the town is a dump. It would be tough to sell a kid on that place after a campus visit, unless he just wanted to party. They're ok at that.

Damn Jaybate. You are HCBS, aren't you? Your knowledge of college basketball has got to have Keegan and Mayer nervous at times! TenaciousD was right, us junkies need this.
Jaybate, is KU better than Syracuse, Villanova, UK, and Duke? How do we match up against each of these teams? Realistically, how do you feel KU will fare in the NCAA's?
Enjoy your posts. Hope you get this and respond.

If Dooley does leave, I'd nominate Jerod Haase to replace him. He would be a great recruiter and has KU ties. I believe he's still a full time assistant at Carolina but only every other year, alternating years with C.B. McGrath. I've always thought with his personality he would someday make a great head coach.
DrPepper (anonymous) says…
jhox, Haase and McGrath no longer alternate. Joe Holladay has a different title now and that made room for both Jerod and CB as assistants. I think Haase would be looking somewhere other than Kansas for his next job to broaden his pedigree some. I agree with you that it is time he start looking.

Ihope Coach Dooley stays at KU but if he goes somewhere good, I always figured either Billy Gillespie or Barry Hinson would be thenext Assistant at KU.
shabbasuraj (anonymous) says…
Self should be looking to grow his coaching tree by placing his assistant and associate coaches into major conferences. /end thread
didjabuti (anonymous) says…
jayhawkintexas, I agree. Billy Gillespie has to be on a short list. Great recruiter and great coach. Not sure what happened at Kentucky but especially with the injuries his team was plagued with you have to give a coach more than a couple years. Also Barry Hinson would be a great choice and he's already part of the staff. I know we have Brett Ballard and of course Coach Manning, but I wonder if some other former players will find their way back....Case, Boschee?
tophawk1983 (anonymous) says…
Billy Gillespie as a asst. coach would be absolutely awesome. of course as long as he's taken care of his off the court problems. but as far as the job goes he has a reputation for being a really hard worker and my god, with BS and Gillespie coming after you how could you say no. It didn't work out for him at Kentucky for a lot of reasons, many of which were political w/n the program from what's been written. He still brought in Meeks, Patterson and Orton. Oh man I don't want to wish Dooley to go but it just sounds so possible!
Aligned (anonymous) says…
The idea of Coach Dooley going to ECU is laughable. And no, he doesn’t have to turn a mid-major around in order to be offered a major HC position, he just needs the recommendation of Bill Self. He also does not need a sandwich trueblue, your perception has been distorted by a hundred-million fat people.
sallyp (anonymous) says…
I hope Coach Dooley doesn't accept the Carolina job, seems to me he's better off as an assistant at KU than the stress of Head coach where he's already been. Some schools are just where they are and Coach Dooley, you just don't need that stress. STAY at KU!!!
ralster (anonymous) says…
I like Dooley. I wouldnt mind seeing Gillispie as an assistant at KU, as I dont think that would 'snub' Manning (not enough coaching experience just yet...), or Ballard (same reason). I personally dont get the vibe from what little I know about Townsend to think he would want to leave KU. Just idle speculation...
