KU vs. Nebraska

KU takes on Nebraska Wednesday, Jan. 13, 2010 in Lincoln.

KU scoring — Collins 22, Marcus Morris 19, Taylor 11, Reed 11, Aldrich 6, X. Henry 6, Markieff Morris 5, Morningstar 4.

KU was 26-for-45 from the floor (57.8 percent), 13-for-21 from three (61.9 percent) and 19-for-26 from the free-throw line (73.1 percent).

NU was 23-for-53 from the floor (43.4 percent), 11-for-21 from three (52.4 percent) and 15-for-21 from the free-throw line (71.4 percent).

KU out-rebounded NU, 31-23. KU had 13 turnovers, while NU had nine.

FINAL: KU defeats NU, 84-72

Great pass from Taylor to Aldrich inside, but two feet away from the rim, Aldrich blows the easy one. It looked like he was caught somewhere between a dunk and a hook shot.

Collins starts to take his man one-on-one, but after picking up his dribble, he zips a pass under the basket to Morningstar for a reverse lay-in. That should about do it.

With a few more free throws, KU finishes off a 12-point victory.

KU 75/NU 64 — 3:58 left in 2nd half

Standhardinger misses a three from the top, but the officials whistle Markieff Morris for a ticky-tack foul on the shot. Standhardinger makes all three tries to trim KU’s lead to four, and the NU fans crank up the noise.

Nice pass by Markieff to a cutting Marcus, who puts in a layup to go with a foul. He also rolls in the free throw.

Nice find inside by Taylor, and Marcus puts in his second straight layup with a foul. He crouches for a few seconds while keeping a stare toward the KU bench.

Marcus misses the free throw, but Morningstar tips it to keep it alive. After a miss by Xavier, Morningstar tips it under the rim again, and Marcus snatches it for a short two. The KU coaches — especially Kurtis Townsend — leap to their feet to applaud the effort from Morningstar.

Collins drives to free up Taylor, who rattles in a three from the corner. After all the struggles, KU has opened up a 13-point lead.

KU 65/NU 57 — 7:50 left in 2nd half

Self tries to steal a minute with Collins on the bench. Standhardinger puts in a jumper, but Reed follows with a deep three. That’s a big basket for KU with Collins, Aldrich and Xavier Henry on the bench.

NU doesn’t bother to guard Markieff Morris up top, and he pulls the trigger, swishing the three. KU leads by seven again, and NU coach Doc Sadler calls timeout. Looks like Collins might get an extra minute on the bench with the team playing so well in the last minute.

Jones leaves a three-pointer short, and Markieff Morris clears the rebound. Taylor races to the other end, drawing a foul inside. With a free throw, KU takes its biggest lead at eight.

Taylor seems to have re-found a role for himself offensively, and that's to attack. Again his aggressiveness nets him a foul on NU. He makes one of two free throws again to push KU’s lead to nine.

Aldrich picks up two quick fouls — Nos. three and four — and that will affect KU the rest of the way.

KU 57/NU 54 — 11:30 left in 2nd half

The large lead doesn’t last long.

Richardson hits a three while falling backward, then on the next possession, swishes another three over the top of Taylor. Timeout KU, which has its lead dwindled to one.

Richardson follows with a baseline jumper over Reed, and that’s an 8-0 run personally for him. NU regains the lead at 54-53.

Collins races to the other end, though, ducking under a defender for a layup to put KU back on top.

Marcus Morris takes a rare charge for KU, and that takes two points off the board for NU. On the other end, Marcus dives to save a turnover for Collins, calling timeout while on the floor to save KU a possession. Collins makes the possession count, wiggling around a defender before putting in a tough shot on the right side of the rim.

KU 53/NU 46 — 14:59 left in 2nd half

Aldrich is starting to get more involved offensively. He uses a nice up-fake to get an NU defender in the air, then draws a foul on the way up. He makes both free throws to extend KU’s lead to five.

KU full-court presses out of the made free throw. A trap in the corner nearly forces a turnover, and after the next inbounds, Marcus Morris pokes away a steal on a lazy pass.

Collins tracks down the ball, then dishes to Marcus Morris for a slam. That seems to have given the Jayhawks some energy, and NU calls timeout.

KU 48/NU 46 — 15:32 left in 2nd half

KU fails to get two defensive rebounds with poor blockouts. On the second one, Self bangs the Runza sign next to him, then immediately screams for Morningstar to enter the game.

Aldrich catapults a 16-footer in. It’s a good sign for KU to see the big man hit that shot — one he hit frequently last year.

Diaz rolls in a layup over Aldrich. Both teams have settled down defensively, though.

Collins comes around a nice double-screen, then hits a three-pointer from the left wing.

Former NU baseball player and current New York Yankee Joba Chamberlain is introduced to the crowd at the break. I have nothing else to say about the Yankees.

KU scoring — Collins 11, Marcus Morris 9, Reed 8, X. Henry 6, Taylor 4, Morningstar 2, Markieff Morris 2, Aldrich 1.

KU was 14-for-24 from the floor (58.3 percent), 9-for-14 from three (64.3 percent) and 6-for-8 from the free-throw line (75 percent).

NU was 15-for-27 from the floor (55.6 percent), 8-for-11 from three (72.7 percent) and 6-for-9 from the free-throw line (66.7 percent).

KU had 13 rebounds to NU’s 10. KU had eight turnovers, while NU had five.

One quick halftime thought

• What is up with KU defensively? The Jayhawks came into the game second nationally in adjusted defensive efficiency, but, in the first half, the Jayhawks weren’t able to stop the Huskers in any facet. KU’s streak of holding 89 straight opponents under 50 percent shooting is in serious jeopardy.

NU 44/KU 43 — Halftime

Reed puts in a jumper just inside the arc.

Though it must kill Self to do it, KU switches to a 2-1-2 zone on the next defensive possession. He has to try something.

Collins drives, then dishes out to Reed for a three from the corner that swishes through.

NU can’t miss from the perimeter right now, though, as Jones’ three-point attempt bounces off the rim three times before dropping through to tie the score at 41.

The officials are calling some weird offensive-foul infractions on KU. Elijah Johnson was called for hooking a defender a second ago and Taylor is called for a charge even though he appeared to pass it to Robinson before the contact.

Collins hits two free throws, but NU answers with — what else? — a long three-pointer by Brandon Richardson to take a 44-43 lead into the break.

The Huskers made 8 of 11 three-pointers (72.7 percent) in the first half.

KU 36/NU 35 — 3:37 left in 1st half

Robinson with an all-out play to save a ball defensively, but Standhardinger corrals the heave and puts in the uncontested layup. I know the rule is not to save the ball under your own basket, but I can’t fault Robinson there, as that was simply an instinctual play to try to save the ball.

Xavier Henry puts in another tough three over a defender. It looked like he got bumped, too. He thought so as well, talking to the closest official about getting hit on the arm.

Markieff Morris looks like he did some dunking drills in practice, as after getting a bounce pass from Morningstar, he went strong to the rim to put in a two-handed jam. That's the first dunk I remember from a Morris twin since the Temple game.

Xavier Henry gets whistled for his second cheapie foul, but Self will leave him out there.

Xavier loses track of Anderson, and the senior hits the wide-open three.

KU is settling for bad shots when it doesn’t have to. Xavier Henry pump-fakes, then puts up a guarded three that misses, and on the next possession, Collins throws up a fadeaway that comes up short.

Elijah Johnson will check in for KU after the media timeout.

KU 31/NU 28 — 7:56 left in 1st half

Marcus Morris with another three. KU can’t miss from three at this point. The big man picks up his second foul on defense, though, and he’ll go to the bench with Aldrich. KU will play small with Xavier Henry playing the four.

The three-point shooting contest continues. Xavier Henry hits one for KU. Jones follows with another for NU. Brady Morningstar answers with a long two from the wing. Which team will start to play defense first?

Taylor with an aggressive drive, and he’s rewarded with a foul call on NU. He makes both freebies.

Lance Jeter shuffles his feet, and Self rolls his arms for a traveling call just before the official mimics him, whistling the Huskers for the turnover.

KU 21/NU 20 — 10:40 left in 1st half

Brady Morningstar gets away with one, as he goes up for a shot then thinks twice about it while in mid-air. Luckily, he is resourceful enough to find Marcus Morris under the basket, who lays it in for two.

Diaz with a tough fallaway on the baseline. NU has shot well so far (7-for-11, 64 percent).

Collins knocks in another three, but Jones answers with a three of his own.

Standhardinger misses an unguarded lay-in inside. He’s furious at himself as he runs back defensively.

After getting it inside, Aldrich immediately has a double-team thrown at him. After settling himself, Aldrich looks diagonally for Collins, who puts in another three. KU’s guard is a perfect 3-for-3 from three tonight with nine points.

I’d say KU has officially recovered from its slow start. Reed knocks down an open three, and Marcus Morris isn’t guarded up top, so he swishes a trey from straight on as well. Timeout NU, as KU has takes a 21-17 lead with help from a 20-5 run. The Jayhawks are 5-for-7 (71.4 percent) from three.

KU has shown quite a bit of full-court pressure so far. Interesting to see that in the first half from a Self team.

Reed does a great job of help defense, but it ends up costing KU a point, as NU finds Henry for a three that swishes through.

Bad news for KU: Aldrich picks up his second foul while swatting for a block, and he’ll most likely sit the rest of the half.

NU 12/KU 6 — 15:56 left in 1st half

Aldrich wins the tip, but NU’s Sek Henry steps in front of Sherron Collins to essentially “steal” the tip away. Henry drives in for an unconstested layup, and NU takes the lead on a play I don’t think I’ve ever seen before.

Collins immediately throws inside to Aldrich, and the big man forces it up toward the rim, drawing a foul. Look for KU to be much more interested in throwing the ball inside tonight.

Ryan Anderson puts in a deep three, and KU coach Bill Self needs to find someone who can guard him.

Sloppy start for KU offensively. Tyshawn Taylor snaps a hard pass that Xavier Henry fumbles out of bounds. Aldrich sets an illegal screen, and Thomas Robinson turns it over on the next possession.

KU isn’t play much defense, either. Jorge Brian Diaz frees himself for two straight layups, and Self calls a timeout with his team dazed and down, 9-1.

Xavier Henry tries to make something happen, and he dribbles right into a defender for a turnover. KU has four straight giveaways. Eshaunte Jones puts in a three over Taylor, and NU has all the momentum and a 12-1 lead.

Collins breaks KU’s drought, putting in a long three at the 16:49 mark for KU’s first field goal. Taylor follows in transition with a driving layup, and things have settled a bit for KU.

8:06 p.m.

Herbie Husker is lowered from the rafters before the NU starting lineup. Interesting start here already.

No seats are empty at this one. The KU fans were pretty loud during the starting lineups, so I'd guess there are at least a couple thousand here.

8:02 p.m.

A few leftover notes before we tip off.

Look out for Christian Standhardinger, a 6-foot-8 forward from Germany. He's gained a reputation as a scorer on the wing, and he's a relative unknown in the Big 12 because he was only deemed eligible last game, when he scored 13 points and grabbed seven rebounds against Texas A&M.; From the scouting report I read, he's a competitor and a bit unconventional, much like many of the European players his age. He also has been known to flop to get a call and is weaker with his left hand than his right hand. Sounds like a Brady Morningstar defensive assignment to me.

Watch for turnovers, as Nebraska averages just 11.9 per game, while forcing 16.3 per contest.

NU has made 40.4 percent of its three-pointers this season.

The Huskers have only three players that return from last season that played in Big 12 conference games.

7:52 p.m.

The Nebraska students were a bit awkward when I watched them scramble for their seats when the gates opened 90 minutes before the game. Almost all of the fans were running, and some were nearly diving onto rows to reserve the good seats to tonight's game.

I asked a Nebraska beat writer in front of me how often each year the students scrambled for seats like that at a men's basketball game.

"Once," he said with a smile.

7:47 p.m.

Just peeked over a computer screen ahead of me to see the starting lineups, and there is one switch for KU: Thomas Robinson will start instead of Marcus Morris.

Tyshawn Taylor, in case you were wondering, is scheduled to start.

7:17 p.m.

As you'll soon see with our pregame photo, Markieff Morris is wearing tape around his left wrist, but he went through drills so he should be fine to play.

6:55 p.m.

Welcome back to the Newell Post Live, coming to you from the Devaney Center in Lincoln, Neb., where the No. 3 Kansas Jayhawks are getting set to take on the Nebraska Cornhuskers.

I've heard a lot of talk about KU having a weak schedule in the non-conference this season. Some have even suggested that, because of the weak schedule, KU wasn't ready to play a team like then-No. 16 Tennessee on the road.

The problem with this line of talk about KU having a weak schedule is that I just don't believe that to be true.

Sure, some of KU's opponents weren't as good as they were expected to be before the season. Teams like Cal, Michigan and UCLA haven't lived up to expectations, and because of that, the wins don't look as sparkling.

And KU faced a few duds, too. Alcorn State is ranked 347th out of 347 Division-I teams in the KenPom rankings. Not only that, KenPom gives ASU nearly a six-percent chance of going winless this season. Central Arkansas (284th in KenPom) and Tennessee Tech (266th in KenPom) weren't too hot, either.

But having said all that, let's not kid ourselves and give in to the belief that KU played a horrible non-conference schedule.

In reality, KU played four opponents in KenPom's top 35 (Tennessee, 12th; California, 14th; Temple, 25th; Memphis, 35th).

Here's further proof that KU's schedule wasn't as bad as others are making it seem.

The following are the rankings of the non-conference strength of schedules of KenPom's top 20 teams:

  1. California 28th
  2. West Virginia 71st
  3. Tennessee 105th
  4. Kansas State 117th
  5. Duke 126th
  6. Kansas 141st
  7. Georgetown 142nd
  8. Wisconsin 149th
  9. BYU 173rd
  10. Purdue 188th
  11. Michigan State 205th
  12. Kentucky 211th
  13. Syracuse 215th
  14. Texas 223rd
  15. Arizona State 230th
  16. Clemson 240th
  17. Mississippi State 249th
  18. Minnesota 259th
  19. Missouri 279th
  20. Ohio State 317th

As you can see, KU isn't near the bottom. The Jayhawks aren't even really in the middle. KU, according to KenPom's strength of schedule calculations, was sixth out of the top 20 teams in terms of strength of schedule*.

* — I understand this is just one strength of schedule rating, but those of you that read me regularly know that I value KenPom's statistical data more than any other rankings out there.

So even though some of the Jayhawks' weaknesses might have been "exposed" against Tennessee as KU coach Bill Self said, let's not go so far as to say that KU has only played one tough opponent this year.

We'll have more notes as we get closer to gametime. Be sure to vote in our poll on the left and also use the hashtag #kubball to have your Tweets show up in our grid on the left side.

Also, though this is not a guarantee, there have been times this year that the Web site, password: phog has helped people out trying to find the game.

The Hawks will want to get rid of that bitter taste of defeat. I expect them to be in top form tonight.

Rock Chalk!

Does anyone know why markieff has the tape on his hand?

melrank 10 years, 2 months ago

CS made the Twins dunk 750 times in practice the last 3 days and he's got a bruise.

Steve Gantz 10 years, 2 months ago

Not sure what he has on the hand, but if he was shooting a layup he probably missed that one too. KU 78-cornpickers 68

Worse yet, I hope it doesn't relegate TRob to the bench forever like the last time EJ got to start :)

T-Rob getting the nod, I hope he can handle the pressure.

FairgroveJayhawk 10 years, 2 months ago

KU by 16. T-Rob gets 12 and 9! Your the man, do it do it.

lance1jhawk 10 years, 2 months ago

The bug eaters will pack the inside and make KU work over the top, just like they have since Doc Sadler got there. Cole is going to have to work hard for his shots, and a little outside shooting should open things up for us. KU 84 NU 65

Ben Kane 10 years, 2 months ago

this is a huge step back for the twins. I hope they come hungry.

Mike Kendall 10 years, 2 months ago

EJ--Play like there is nothing to lose--impress Bill (now, I feel like a stinkin' K-State player) ! Impress Coach Self please!!!!!!!!!!!

Mike Kendall 10 years, 2 months ago

Take it on the chin, Longhorns!!!!!!! Life on the road in the Big 12 is tough, I keep saying it!

anyone have the link to watch the game?????

NH_JHawk 10 years, 2 months ago

already 2 turnovers. AAAAAHHHHHHH.....

NH_JHawk 10 years, 2 months ago

3 turnovers. 2 on X. WTF? this is seriously frustrating.

Kent Wells 10 years, 2 months ago

Relax. Bugeaters are off to a fast start. This will all even out...

melrank 10 years, 2 months ago

OK There's the punch to the face.

Let's settle down and play.

Ben Kane 10 years, 2 months ago

i've done a lot of criticizing lately but here's one more. while cole has been remarkable on the boards, what in the world has happened to him around the basket? Lately he can't even make put-back dunks.

Mike Kendall 10 years, 2 months ago

Nice prediction, KU Wells. Someone tell me when Wells is being sarcastic--man, I hate that when that happens!!!!!!!!

Kye Clark 10 years, 2 months ago

funny how Collins had said Marcus Morris had the best practice of the anyone the other day, and then he's not starting...?

BCRavenJHawkfan 10 years, 2 months ago

kuwells ,

No doubt it will even out and we settle down. But the mistakes are the same ole, same ole. Are we practicing at all?

tis4tim 10 years, 2 months ago

This is what it's been this season so far:

Password is phog

See if that works

BCRavenJHawkfan 10 years, 2 months ago

Oh, notice what Texas just did after half. FULL COURT PRESS.

Ben Kane 10 years, 2 months ago

I think if CJ and EJ don't see some minutes tonight that closes the book on them for the year.

Kent Wells 10 years, 2 months ago

I think they are practicing making mistakes.

Ben Kane 10 years, 2 months ago

we are arguably the deepest team in the country. why we don't press all game is beyond me. I had been hoping BS had been saving it for conf play.

BCRavenJHawkfan 10 years, 2 months ago

Okay, I just typed FULL COURT PRESS in caps for emphasis, but it changed to lower case when it posted. Why?

melrank 10 years, 2 months ago

Anyone who wants to criticize Sherron, please immediately disqualify yourself from ever posting on this board again.

If only he had consistent help.

Ben Kane 10 years, 2 months ago

keep the press on! leave cole under the basket in case anyone breaks away. all game long!

BCRavenJHawkfan 10 years, 2 months ago

Even, Okie Ballers press on occasion, i.e Eddie Sutton.

Mike Kendall 10 years, 2 months ago

Chuck, you called it--finally pressing FC!

Kent Wells 10 years, 2 months ago

I think me being sarcastic is a given. I guess I'd like to revise my prediction now!

Did y'all just see on the crawl that Griffin is out for the season. Sucks for him squared. First the clippers, then the knee.

Is is just me, or is it like someone just told Aldrich all he has to do is rebound?

bgthemanofsteel 10 years, 2 months ago

well morris may not be able to dunk or palm the ball but he can hit a 3!

Mike Kendall 10 years, 2 months ago

Hey, we're ahead!!! What di miss? Just messin' with ya all!

Ben Kane 10 years, 2 months ago

I want more press. good things out of it so far. maybe BS was saving it for the conference. I hope so.

bgthemanofsteel 10 years, 2 months ago

don't understand why self won't play cj if reed's shot is cold.

Kye Clark 10 years, 2 months ago

Us getting hot from 3 is not all good. We've seemingly abandoned trying to feed the ball into the post.

Ben Kane 10 years, 2 months ago

i don't think reed has too high a percentage if he isn't shooting from the corner.

Brian Powell 10 years, 2 months ago

Well really crappy start, but probably a little hangover from the whiskey.

Nice run to close the gap.. But so far NEB has been able to penetrate AND hit threes -- so what's our half court answer on D?

Did anyone notice how early Self put the press on?? LOL Learned that lesson.

This might be interesting for a while, but we should pull it out OK.

Unless of course we get into foul trouble. Then who knows; Maybe we'll be forced to use our "depth" lol

Theutus 10 years, 2 months ago

Is anyone else a little worried at our reliance on the 3 yet again.... It's like it's the only offensive thing we can produce....

God forbid we not shoot a good percentage from behind the arc, because if we aren't hitting those, we don't have anything else.

Mike Kendall 10 years, 2 months ago

Chuck, I agree. We should have pressed at Knoxville. I am sticking with my prediction, KU by five. KU should win, but it will be close. If I am wrong, I will put my foot in my mouth.

BCRavenJHawkfan 10 years, 2 months ago

Is this Nebraska's first conference game of the season as well?

bgthemanofsteel 10 years, 2 months ago

okay, maybe morris can play the 2 instead of reed and trob can play down low.

BCRavenJHawkfan 10 years, 2 months ago

Yes I am. Why Xavier does not drive the lane or go to the basket is beyond me.

Mike Kendall 10 years, 2 months ago

That would be a NO! They lost at A&M while we were losing to the Vols.

melrank 10 years, 2 months ago

I'm not trying to be a smart-$%^&, but I'm curious with the fascination with the full court press?

Sherron and Ty are our quickest perimeter players and neither displays incredible defensive prowess. X is very average defensively. Our best defender (supposedly) is Brady and I don't see him being a full court press dynamo. Bill obviously doesn't think EJ and CJ can guard consistently.

Plus, Bill seems to think we only have a 8 man rotation, so we don't have unlimited depth waiting on the bench ready to press.

Why the love affair with a press?

Theutus 10 years, 2 months ago

Mel, i personally would like to see the press because we have a deep bench... And we can press, cycle our players, and simply run teams into the ground...

Coach Self obviously doesn't agree though, so it is what it is.

Brian Powell 10 years, 2 months ago

I'm not sure X has a quick first step or 'shake-em move to get past most college defenders. The ONE time he did at TENN was against a bigger guy, if I remember.

In his defense, he does finish nicely when he's near the rim, but I agree - should get there more.

Ben Kane 10 years, 2 months ago

if we can go 12-14 deep when others are only 8-9 a full court press will wear them down throughout the game while we remain fresh. it's the perfect opportunity to get everyone some minutes and by the 10 min mark of the second half the other team is done. The press is not about the right now, but the overall picture. Plus, our defense isn't so great to begin so the downside to the press (you get burned every now and then) is moot because we are getting burned on defense anyway.

Mike Kendall 10 years, 2 months ago

I think the press is good in certain situations, maybe even a half-court trap. Hawks have to mix it up, though. But somebody pointed out that Self may not like to press (O-State grad, or whatever).

melrank 10 years, 2 months ago

Theutus - I would have agreed 60 days ago, but I'm not seeing that our bench is that deep.

Brian Powell 10 years, 2 months ago

Well the press would do a couple things, ideally, while creating turns;

disrupt the flow or momentum change the pace

We could use both, I think. I mean, I hope a quicker north-south game would be to our favor here, but now I'm not so sure!

And the press isn't really about individual D ability, it's a team D where you want to create more opportunities for opponent mistakes.

Ben Kane 10 years, 2 months ago

that's exactly the problem. with the style of playing we are using there just aren't enough minutes in the game to be that deep. I'm no coach and I love Self, but sometimes you have to change your philosophy to fit what you have and best enable your team to win.

Mike Kendall 10 years, 2 months ago

Man, X just can't pass the rock--but, if he can score 3's. . . . .

Why can't this team defend against the 3 better? 36-35 KU...

Chuck Wagstaff 10 years, 2 months ago

What we really lack is leadership. Other than SC, no one wants to take control. I know we're young, but talent alone will not win championships. (Except Syracuse in 2003.)

Brian Powell 10 years, 2 months ago

With Cole on the bench, we're probably sagging in our D more than we should to compensate?

I anticipated some of the responses and can see the argument, but I doubt coach is going to change his stripes - he's going to play 8 guys consistently and hang his hat on tough, hard-nosed MTM half court defense with the occassional press, half court traps, zones, and other junk defenses thrown in on occassion.

It's not possible to do all those things really well in today's game regardless of your talent level so the "depth" part of the equation isn't relevant IMO.

Unless we are going to reinvent Kansas Basketball that won us a National Championship 2 years ago, I'd be happier to see us growing some balls and start playing like Men.

FairgroveJayhawk 10 years, 2 months ago

jcsmith- my bet on the identity is by mid Feb.

go EJ

jayhawker_97 10 years, 2 months ago

Mk just answered my question. There are so many chances of KU doing that over and over, but the guards rather pass the ball outside. They need to drill this screening in practice more often. The other one is give & go. The treys just don't work all the time.

Mike Kendall 10 years, 2 months ago

Hope it isn't until the Big 12 PS Tourney!!!!!!!!

Theutus 10 years, 2 months ago

melrank, what won us a National Championship 2 years ago was our insanely good set of bigs...

This year, our bigs either don't do anything, or don't get the opportunity to because like tonight we're doing nothing but launching 3's...

So once again, what is the deal with our offense? Or i should say the lack of offense... Because i don't believe just running down and launching a 3 every single possession is a valid offense.

Ben Kane 10 years, 2 months ago

well he sure is playing more zone these days...(not that i'm complaining)

jcsmith 10 years, 2 months ago

y did they reset the shot clock to 15 after it was down to 5?

Ben Kane 10 years, 2 months ago

well self said he wan't reed to look to shoot more... wish granted.

Brian Powell 10 years, 2 months ago

I don't see how we're getting scored on from 3 and from point-blank --- can we cover our assignments??

Even in zone you don't lose sight of a guy right under the rim, Trob

BCRavenJHawkfan 10 years, 2 months ago

I'm sorry but that 3 was not because of a good stroke, or pure. It bounced around and went in.

Vardar3285 10 years, 2 months ago

Does anyone else have a serious problem with what is going on here?

KUGreenMachine 10 years, 2 months ago

does anyone understand what the deal is with EJ? He brings a spark to the team whenever he's in, but they've barely played him for 4 games now.....we were playing our best basketball with EJ starting and TT off the bench....I'm so confused

jcsmith 10 years, 2 months ago

WhyTF did we only play Aldrich 7 minutes?

WhyTF cant we guard the trey?

jayhawkinATL 10 years, 2 months ago

The 'hawks can't play zone to save their lives!!!

Theutus 10 years, 2 months ago

I'm raising my hand too fellas.... This is NOT KU basketball.... If we aren't on fire from behind the arc tonight, we are getting our butts kicked by Nebraska....

And our defense is awful to boot..

Mike Kendall 10 years, 2 months ago

GAWD--We have crappy defense!!!!!!!!!! Look at the score!

Ben Kane 10 years, 2 months ago

i just rewound and he did say that.

cole only played 7 minutes because he had two fouls.

jayhawkinATL 10 years, 2 months ago

EJ collapsed down when he shouldn't have and he left his man wide open for a three!!!

Clarence Haynes 10 years, 2 months ago

These guys are out of synch! This is not good! They are just looking at each other!

melrank 10 years, 2 months ago

Theutus - our bigs were really important, you are right.

We do a poor job of getting the ball into the post for sure so that hurts our offensive flow. I see that we don't get much of the high-low action we used to be very successful with, either.

Finally, we don't get the ball into the lane very well lately. Remember the alley-oop lobs to the bigs? We rarely see that this year.

kansasbasketball 10 years, 2 months ago

is it me or does cole look pissed?? even though i hope he does and lets hope he has big 2nd half

Brian Powell 10 years, 2 months ago

It doesn't look like we've every practiced a zone, ever.

Man the __ up and play some real D -- I don't care if Cole is on the bench, who dey?? Man up!

And don't get me started on Offense... put that whiskey bottle away and play smart.

Vardar3285 10 years, 2 months ago

If you don't realize how this team is imploding you are a jayhawk homer with no since of reality. I'm ashamed to be a KU fan let alone have a degree from the school.

This team has serious chemistry problems.

jayhawkinATL 10 years, 2 months ago

TRob did basically the same thing...left a guy wide open in the post while playing middle zone!!!

Theutus 10 years, 2 months ago

jayahwkinatl, EJ may have collapsed and left someone open on a three.. But answer me this, who the hell didn't?

We haven't guarded anyone on a 3 in the past 3 games.

Bryan Swan 10 years, 2 months ago

Isn't this 3 games in a row down or tied at the half???

Ben Kane 10 years, 2 months ago

who dey... are you a bengals fan?

a half not a game make.

Vardar3285 10 years, 2 months ago

This is probably the most unintelligent Jayhawk team I have seen in my lifetime. We truly have some intellectual idiots on this team.

Give me the days of Jerod Hasse and Jacque Vaughn.

jayhawkinATL 10 years, 2 months ago

TT did it against the walk-on at UT which basically resulted in a nail-in-the-coffin trey!

Ben Kane 10 years, 2 months ago

the prestige of a degree shouldn't rise and fall with every basketball game. I too am embarrassed right now.

then again there have been a lot of seasons where we played great all year and were disappointed in the end...

MrPilot 10 years, 2 months ago

Vardar3285 (anonymous) says...

Go back to mizzou, troll.

Brian Powell 10 years, 2 months ago

'who dey' is a lot older than the Bengals :P

Kye Clark 10 years, 2 months ago

This is just embarrassing. First, we play like @$$ against Cornell at home. Then on the road against a team with 6 scholarship players. And again here tonight with perenial Big 12 bottom feeder Nebraska. Pathetic

55jayhawk 10 years, 2 months ago

Reminds me of the Football season this past year when we got into Big 12 play. The boys have been ready their press clippings and have no emotion.

Ben Kane 10 years, 2 months ago

one thing I have to tip my hat to hat as far as calipari is concerned is that he really has his team believing that they are 10-7 right now. Thus he gets the most out of everyone all the time. we think we can just show up and beat everyone.

jcsmith 10 years, 2 months ago

There have been several years in the Bill Self era where at the beggining of the season I said, "I'm anxious to actually get to watch CS have to coach." I did not say that this year because I did not think that we would have to "coach". What are we doing guys? Where are we going? This team needs a MAJOR attitude adjustment and I mean Right Fin Now. Some of you say that we hopefully wont "Peak" until March. How about we just pray for some fin improvement and not worry about when we're going to peak. Three weeks at the level of play we're at it and absolutely no noticable improvement is unacceptable.

We dont start improving, we dont GET a chance to peak in March.

FairgroveJayhawk 10 years, 2 months ago

Nebraska is having a great game shooting the ball so far. They'll cool off in the second half and KU's D will "improve".

Vardar3285 10 years, 2 months ago

No Troll here Mr. Pilot. Why don't you get a little since of reality.

BCRavenJHawkfan 10 years, 2 months ago

The defensive play is like they are scared, rather than confident aggressive D. I am afraid this game will be a squeeker, maybe even OT. And I can't confidently say we win. How sad is that?

Mike Kendall 10 years, 2 months ago

Tarhills losing at halftime, big time at Clemson. I guess I don't feel so bad. Roy's team can't play any defense, too.

melrank 10 years, 2 months ago

For whatever it's worth regarding all the questions about our offense - we are shooting 58% from the field and 64% from 3.

Nebraska is shooting 8-11 from 3. You can't do that in the NBA 3 Point contest unguarded.

Settle down a little, folks. They won't shoot like that all night long.

jcsmith 10 years, 2 months ago

Pull Little and Releford off redshirt. You can bet those two would be hungry enough to kick some a$$.

yates33333 10 years, 2 months ago

The most uncertain man on the court tonight appears to be Bill Self. Why not? Figure this team out. Nebraska never shot it so good until they played Kansas. Ditto with Tennessee and somewhat ditto with Cornell. Maybe there is too much talent on KUs roster. Yet, Kentucky and Texas seem to do all right with a great deal of talent.

Theutus 10 years, 2 months ago

Fairgrove, as lucky as Nebraska has been with shooting tonight, so has KU. We are hitting a lot of 3's... So it could have gone either way. We could be getting stomped right now because we have NO offense to speak of outside of "hey lets just throw up a 3".

I hope you're right about our defense in the second half though.

Vardar3285 10 years, 2 months ago

This is truly sad considering the preseason expectations.

You don't have to be a troll to realize something is wrong with this team.

We have played horrible for three games in a row. The perimiter defeses is sad.

BCRavenJHawkfan 10 years, 2 months ago

mikendal, But that's normal for them. Not so for us.

Mike Kendall 10 years, 2 months ago

Jimmy Dykes, at halftime, said the Jayhawks are in a defensive slump and Coach Self will get on top of this. I think that will be the case---god, I hope so!

Kye Clark 10 years, 2 months ago

We'd be getting slaughtered if we weren't hitting our outside shots.

jcsmith 10 years, 2 months ago

I miss the IN YOUR FACE defense of RussRob, BRush and MChalmers.

Mike Kendall 10 years, 2 months ago

They said Nebraska is 10-0 when leading at halftime--god, I didn't need to hear that!

Theutus 10 years, 2 months ago

My god our feed to the post is atrocious.... I feel bad for Cole, because he is handcuffed by our inability to get him the ball on O.

jcsmith 10 years, 2 months ago

hopefully that series is a sign that nebraska has gone cold on the Offense.

BCRavenJHawkfan 10 years, 2 months ago

X, NBA body but no NBA game. I'm sorry, that's the way I see it.

jcsmith 10 years, 2 months ago

LOL, is it just me or does anyone else think Stadler looks like a French Bulldog when he gets mad and wrinckles his forehead.

Ben Kane 10 years, 2 months ago

taylor is feeding the post much better than the other night. in fact i think he's the only one feeding the post tonight.

bgthemanofsteel 10 years, 2 months ago

jcsmith, i not only miss their d, i miss knowing that several guys on that team could score and step up in a game when needed. seems like collins is our only scorer lately.

Dale Koch 10 years, 2 months ago

No kidding, did you hear that? 1 steal tonight and only 3 on Sunday. That's not KU BB

Mike Kendall 10 years, 2 months ago

I have a French Bulldog and you assessment is frickin' right on!

dukehester 10 years, 2 months ago

X = No D......No brain for the game as yet.....

Clarence Haynes 10 years, 2 months ago

jcsmith....Yeah, they made a big in your face difference

Kent Wells 10 years, 2 months ago

N will be 10-1 when leading at the half after this one.

And X is just going through that Freshman stuff. He has too much talent. He needs a game back in AFH to get on track. For now BCRaven, that is totally fair assessment.

Vardar3285 10 years, 2 months ago

X might have an NBA body. Not at NBA talent by any stretch of the imagination.

FairgroveJayhawk 10 years, 2 months ago

Two are missing, Cole and X. Neither has showed up........... yet.

jayhawkboogeyman 10 years, 2 months ago

We are relying on good shooters missing wide, wide, wide open 3s to win this game, as with a lot of others this season. This team looks wrong in lots of ways. just bad.

jcsmith 10 years, 2 months ago

Agreed Raven.

I think X is going to put a bad taste in my mouth about top five star recruits in Bill Selfs lineup. I always wanted the best. But i'm learning this year that I believe I would rather take a strong 3 or 4 star recruit in the lower half of the top 150 who feels they have something to learn and prove.

X's "finesse" just ain't cuttin it. Kickin myself in the a$$ now thinkin maybe we should have went with Stephenson instead.

Ben Kane 10 years, 2 months ago

i think they got a halftime lecture about getting the ball inside.

that was a great move by cole to draw the foul.

Kent Wells 10 years, 2 months ago

Cole is teaching post moves to German guy.

melrank 10 years, 2 months ago

Finally, Ron Franklin said it - Big XII action on the road is tough every night.

Get a grip on reality if you think we are going to blow everyone out every night.

A win is what we need regardless of the opponent.

FairgroveJayhawk 10 years, 2 months ago

Isn't the Nebraska dude from Germany the most Asain looking German guy you've ever seen. hmmmm

Theutus 10 years, 2 months ago

Easy jcsmith, X will come along... He's still really really green.... He'll grow. That being said, our TEAM play is still disgusting.

We need to worry about that.

NH_JHawk 10 years, 2 months ago

I'm with Mel on this one. The press isn't HCBS style and they shouldn't play it fulltime. Having said that, the press was effective there! pretty! I like that he sprinkles it in every once in a while.

dukehester 10 years, 2 months ago

amazing what playing a little D can do!!!

Kent Wells 10 years, 2 months ago

Actually, I was getting German Guy confused with Jorge.

I miss Cookie Monster.

Dale Koch 10 years, 2 months ago

what do you mean sprinkles it in. This is the first time this year I've seen it except the last minute at TU

jcsmith 10 years, 2 months ago

jcsmith is waiting to here Stadler snort like a French Bulldog.

Jesse Newell 10 years, 2 months ago

Fairgrove — He's part Filipino, I believe.

jaybate 10 years, 2 months ago

Disruption Factor (steals to TOs): 1:8

Weak defense and poor ball protection.

KU flat yet again.

It would be a blowout in favor of NU without 64% from trey.

No mystery here.

Feed bigs and kick butt.

Don't feed bigs and its just pick-up ball.

Self is way out on a limb here with what he's doing to the team.

He's trying to forge a team with induced crisis after induced crisis.

I've never seen a coach do this before ever?

Three games from now Self is either going to look like the greatest genius in the game, or like the guy who destroyed a Number 1 team.

He has basketballs the size of Jupiter.

This is scary tightrope walking.

Sherron actually looks scared for the first time ever tonight; like he's finally starting to think what the heck is coach doing?

When the Sarge is wracked with doubt, it can only mean one thing. Self is sticking the needle way down deep inside the players as a group now.

This could get very ugly before it gets better.

Self seems to be telling the team there is no half way, not even any 9/10ths. It is 10/10ths or I will destroy you myself.

I've never seen a coach ever come close to doing what Self is doing the last three games.

Its scary actually.

He's either going to come out of this like Ahab in Moby Dick, or like Nimitz at the Battle of Midway.

I hope Self has the broken code that Nimitz had.

NH_JHawk 10 years, 2 months ago

hence the word "sprinkle" = small amount.

Mike Kendall 10 years, 2 months ago

Where is our D on 3's? Good grief, Charley Brown!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

jayhawkinATL 10 years, 2 months ago

Two treys right in TT's face!!!!!!!!!!!!!! His defense is atrocious!!!!!!!!! Take is ass out, Bill!!!!!!!!!!!!

BCRavenJHawkfan 10 years, 2 months ago

I think Self is going to have to pop a roid in order for these guys to get it.

melrank 10 years, 2 months ago

Press? Bullcrap.

Press two possessions in a row after holding them 1-7 so far in the second half and our guys are out of position and give up two threes.

I don't agree.

Theutus 10 years, 2 months ago

Great slice by Taylor there... i he can start to finish those, that's exactly what we need.... Quick cuts into the lane. Penetration.

melrank 10 years, 2 months ago

Marcus showing some heart - I like it.

melrank 10 years, 2 months ago

Fairgrove - I've been saying that word all night long :)

Michael Bratisax 10 years, 2 months ago

I'll say it... this is an extremely overrated team. All I see is individuals.. Cole is going from a first-round draft choice to a late 2nd round pick. Xavier is one of the most disappointing recruits in recent history. The only player that I see who has heart is Collins.

Mike Kendall 10 years, 2 months ago

Did you see that--Nebraska's coach almost pulled a Frank Martin--he was in the face of the German dude!

Brian Powell 10 years, 2 months ago

TT again a liability, on both ends (should've had a foul on that 3 too) Marcus really stepping up, and nice D by Cole there

Our O is coming around, but our D is again too slow to catch up in the game

FairgroveJayhawk 10 years, 2 months ago

Thanks Jesse, I was getting confused there for a minute.

BCRavenJHawkfan 10 years, 2 months ago

When was the last time we had back door cutters to the rim?

Dale Koch 10 years, 2 months ago

now Sherron will start to think he is the only one out there. Hence the charging foul

jayhawkinATL 10 years, 2 months ago

TT still looks as if he doesn't know his role!!!

Mike Kendall 10 years, 2 months ago

Shhhhhhhhhh--don't let Coach Bill know that!

jcsmith 10 years, 2 months ago

We're playing "Guard" D instead of "Deny" D. Guarding once they have the ball instead of denying before they get it. Are we even working on how to break through a pick in practice? Every pick, we're on the back side while the offense is already catching and dribbling.

melrank 10 years, 2 months ago

Reed 3 started with a pass to the post.

C'mon guys figure it out.

Ben Kane 10 years, 2 months ago

i like the move to take sherron out. let the rest of the team figure something out.

jcsmith 10 years, 2 months ago

ROFL. That kat deserves a Grammy for that act.

Brian Powell 10 years, 2 months ago

Cole and Sherron both on the bench... maybe Self is looking at that 'depth 'issue a bit more now?

Kent Wells 10 years, 2 months ago

I'd like to apologize to all you fellow posters out there. I just slapped my couch with the remote. I'd also like to apologize to my couch, and the remote. Especially the remote as I need to find some duct tape to repair my remote.

My cable provider has notified me that it is disappointed with my behavior and does not expect me to assault my remote again. I think my behavior in the future lies on Coach Selfs' ability to get this teams sh!t turned around.

Theutus 10 years, 2 months ago

What the hell was that........ That guy just started flailing around and the refs call a foul?

Ben Kane 10 years, 2 months ago

there's no denying the talent that is sherron collins and he's an incredible leader but I wonder if we are a better Team without him.

Dale Koch 10 years, 2 months ago

I don't think we are better chuck, but sometimes I think he needs reigned in

melrank 10 years, 2 months ago

kuwells - incredible post - thank you.

BCRavenJHawkfan 10 years, 2 months ago

You're lucky it's just the remote. As I posted yesterday some may have had to replace TV's after Sunday's fiasco.

Ben Kane 10 years, 2 months ago

best team ball of the night so far with sherron on the bench. Plus, TT sure seems to know what his role is right now.

melrank 10 years, 2 months ago

Chuck - usually I'm with you, but are you serious?

Sherron is the only warrior on this team. Whenever he is taking over it's because no one else will do freaking anything.

jcsmith 10 years, 2 months ago

Those slashes to the basket dont mean sh!t taylor if you cant sink your free throws.

Brian Powell 10 years, 2 months ago

TT slashing in transition -- need to do more of that.

Ben Kane 10 years, 2 months ago

i think that just might be because everyone loos to him to make the play so much. it's a catch 22.

BCRavenJHawkfan 10 years, 2 months ago

Good night! Sometimes I think our guys are rebounding with oven mitts on.

Vardar3285 10 years, 2 months ago

Cole brings the ball to his waste every time he gets the ball.

Cole is a big problem offensively this year.

Kent Wells 10 years, 2 months ago

It is really hard to watch this game. Just thought I would take a shot at some humor.

A barometer for how KU is playing is my cat. The cat has been hiding since 8:05.

Brian Powell 10 years, 2 months ago

Giving a team like Neb. WAYY too many 2nd and 3rd opportunities per possession.

Ben Kane 10 years, 2 months ago

keep in mind this run of late has been the result of mediocare defense (better than we've been showing) and decent offensive play combined with aggressive rebounding. all with sherron on the bench.

Dale Koch 10 years, 2 months ago

on one of TT's drive to the bucket Cole just stood at the top of the key and never even moved to the bucket for a rebound. I swear something is going on with him. Needs to get this figured out. SOON

BCRavenJHawkfan 10 years, 2 months ago

Exactly. TT is better slashing in transition than in the half court. Collins just the opposite, or actually good in both.

jcsmith 10 years, 2 months ago

Wow, didnt know Germany had a Hollywood too.

melrank 10 years, 2 months ago

Comment on Cole - he doesn't seem to have the abilty to catch the ball and square up, creating space, and shooting.

He generally jump hooks if he doesn't have a drop step lay-up. His jump hook is flat and not very soft.

He needs a go to move of somekind in the post.

jcsmith 10 years, 2 months ago

I thought I sat down this evening to watch a basketball game. How the hell did the channel get switched to the Grammy's?

Darrel Stice 10 years, 2 months ago

Uh oh, did HCBS just HIT 'Keiff?!?! Better watch himself!!! :)

melrank 10 years, 2 months ago

Chuck - c'mon, man, don't make me defend Sherron.

It might be true that the timing of the run has happened with Sherron on the bench, but don't confuse the cause and effect.

jcsmith 10 years, 2 months ago

I'm sorry guys. As highly talented as Xavier is, he needs to sit. All he does is stand out on the perimeter waiting for the ball.

melrank 10 years, 2 months ago

Wait, was that 3 from Tyshawn a result of Sherron's drive and dish?

Ben Kane 10 years, 2 months ago

marcus is stepping up. I knew he would.

FairgroveJayhawk 10 years, 2 months ago

KU started playing ball with 9 minutes left. It's looking promising now.

KUGreenMachine 10 years, 2 months ago

we better finish this game, cuz we look like a bunch of clowns after each basket....

Ben Kane 10 years, 2 months ago

you don't have to defend sherron i'm not trying to insult him. I'm insulting everyone else's ability to play with him.

Mike Kendall 10 years, 2 months ago

We are playing better this half but still a lot to work on. Much better than Knoxville.

jcsmith 10 years, 2 months ago

I get so f***in tired of seeing that little jump celebration during a time out. Thats the mentality of this team.

Gentlement, incase your have forgotten (already) You Got Your A$$es Handed To You Just THREE days ago.

Ben Kane 10 years, 2 months ago

if we turned sherron loose all game and just told everyone else to set picks for him and rebound...I like our odds, but i don't that is enough to win it all.

Brian Powell 10 years, 2 months ago

Now THAT's Kansas ballin! Where has it been for the last 3 games?

BCRavenJHawkfan 10 years, 2 months ago

Yep, I couldn't agree more. And I think it is the result of getting away with that in HS as a big fish in a small pond. Now he's just another fish in a big ocean.

Kent Wells 10 years, 2 months ago

An answer to the "what is my role" question, knock down the 3! Grab rebounds!

Morris has some pride apparently.

Cole has turned into Greg Dreiling.

KU could stand a challenge with Sherron on the bench. I understand where Chuck Berry is coming from. They need 5 guys to step up. Not one, get the ball to Sherron and get out of the way play to win games.

Pressing causes turnovers. They have to learn how to sneak in a press and get back and play defense too.

Christian Standhardinger looks more like Long Duck Dong that he does David Hasslehoff.

jaybate 10 years, 2 months ago

We are witnessing the most amazing thing I have ever seen a coach do in college basketball.

Self has destroyed a Number One team, because it wasn't good enough for him.

He utterly demolished them the first half.

And he's surgically rebuilding the team starting at 9 minutes into the second half.

Its freaking unbelievable.

The players are molding to his will right before our eyes.

And he's no where near done.

I wouldn't be surprised if he takes the team apart the next game too.

Taylor is finally playing the way Self wants him to.

All the players are playing the way he wants them to.

Its dazzling to watch.

Self doesn't give a hang if they win by 1 or 50.

He's willing to lose if he has to.

He's going to forge the team or destroy it completely.

Awesome...awesome...awesome...a nonstop coaching clinic!!!!

Eddie, you sneaky sunnuvagun, I can feel you in your rockin' chair grinning ear to ear right now!

This has your finger prints all over it.

I'll bet every cent I've got that Self's cell phone bill has got Eddies land line all over it.

The conversation happened after the Temple game.

"They won on talent, Billy, they aren't a team."

"But coach Sutton, did ya just hear what you told me?"

"Ya gotta do it, Billy, you gotta."

"But coach, I can't destroy a number one team, fer chrissakes."

"Billy boy, ya gotta, there's no other way. Ya gotta break'em down. They're too good for any other team on your schedule to do it before its too late in the tourney and you run in to someone that will take them down for good. You gotta break'em. Do it now, Billy, do it."

Self has destroyed his own team since the Temple game.

If you're out there, stay off the sauce until this is over, will ya?

This is the hairiest thing I've ever seen a coach do.

Ben Kane 10 years, 2 months ago

i all i was really saying is that i agreed with bill in that it was a great time to sit him for awhile and let some of the other pieces figure some things out. In this case it happened to work, but we will be much better off in the long run if this team doesn't feel it Needs sherron to bail them out

Brian Powell 10 years, 2 months ago

jcsmith, that is one thing I miss about Roy's teams. He only let them 'celebrate' with a fist in the air or something... Sometimes that was nice.

I guess I don't really mind the celebrating after good plays, but TT's salute needs to be used more sparingly and have more consistency behind it :P and the jumps are getting old.

Maybe for TT a fake punch/fight/thumb-injury celebration Lebron James style?

Mike Kendall 10 years, 2 months ago

Looks like the Tar Hills will lose tonight--wonder if they will still be in the Top 15?

LAJayhawk 10 years, 2 months ago

We're shooting roughly 60% from the field and 65% from 3.... if we weren't shooting lights out, this game would be a nightmare......

jcsmith 10 years, 2 months ago

"Maybe for TT a fake punch/fight/thumb-injury celebration Lebron James style?"

HAHA. Priceless.

melrank 10 years, 2 months ago

Chuck - on that part we totally agree. When Sherron shoots alot, we are in trouble big time. My point was, at times no one else is helping, so Sherron needs to put us on his back. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. I think he knows when that time is better this year than last year.

If the other guys got it, Sherron would only be taking 10-12 shots a game.

FairgroveJayhawk 10 years, 2 months ago

Taylor has taken a few drives to the basket tonight that realy showed his speed. I had forgotten how fast he is.

Ben Kane 10 years, 2 months ago

so far only 22 points for Neb in second half. that's much better.

BCRavenJHawkfan 10 years, 2 months ago

NH_JHawk, Yep. Can't wait till the next one in 2011.

Thats something I missed last week.....................................

Nebraska ran out of gas tonight--nice win on the road for KU! Gotta keep on improving Hawks! It was nice talkin' to all tonight--it's always interesting and fun--jcsmith, easy on the "F" Word!--gotta go!

LAJayhawk 10 years, 2 months ago

So... not only does Taylor give up the turnover, but he also fouls a guy shooting a 3 pointer with under a minute left with his team up 15....

Yeah, brains on that kid........

jcsmith 10 years, 2 months ago

Good night guys.

OK Win. Got alot of improving to do though.

Rock Chalk.

See you all Saturday.

melrank 10 years, 2 months ago

BC - Actually two blocks happened really quickly. I was referring to the one before that where they shot it and we blocked it without a foul and we got the rebound.

It's a TiVo thing at this point.

Brian Powell 10 years, 2 months ago

I agree with the Marcus MVP - great game

TT great slashes, but still a lot of silly fouls and TOs

Cole, not a great O game today - need to finish stronger at the rim

X, needs some work on D and still falls asleep on O sometimes like he's playing HS defenders. Add the dribble drive more?

Sherron another solid effort, just a few lapses on O. He's Mr.T out there, Foo!

Some more clutch shots by Reed and Brady

Let's do this season...

FairgroveJayhawk 10 years, 2 months ago

kuwells, you read my mind about Tyrel's sister. Sad remarks aren't they:)

melrank 10 years, 2 months ago

Shoot 58% from the field, with 19-26 from the line and almost double your opponent on the boards, you'd think we won by 40. .

Brian Powell 10 years, 2 months ago

Re: Tyrel's sister

Having looked at Reed's face on the screen for a couple years now, that is just too weird. Weird as in not 'smokin'.

lance1jhawk 10 years, 2 months ago

Jaybate - Awesome post.

Everyone else... Calm down its league play and its going to be ugly and hard. Hell 3 loses will probably win the big 12. I just hope that when this season ends we are the one with the fewest loses. NU did exactly what I predicted they would do. Pack the interior and make us beat them from over the top. We need better peremiter defense and more interior screens to open up Cole. Just remember folks... Its league play. Its going to be ugly, and all that matters is that we walk away with a W.

Michael Bratisax 10 years, 2 months ago

I used to believe that any road victory in conference was a good victory... but all I saw today was a continuation of an extremely talented team playing far below their potential. Aldrich should have left for the NBA. His stock is only going down and there is no comparison between Wall and Xavier. Wall is everything that was promised, Xavier is either lazy or lacks basketball IQ. This is quickly turning into the Collins/Marcus show with a lot of talented but under preforming cast.

LAJayhawk 10 years, 2 months ago

Random question: anyone know where I can listen to post game? KLWN and the LAZER are blacked out online. And I'm not paying $10 to listen to All-Access through the KUAthletics......

"kuwells were did you see her at??"

They scanned over here a few times with like 20 seconds left talking about her being a manager.

Mike Kendall 10 years, 2 months ago

Thanks for the link--you learn something new everyday!!!!! Wow!

kuwells--Tyrel's sister--Wow!!!! Smoking, and then, some!!! Like to see her again, on TV.

Just about 30 seconds left in the game, sitting right behind the bench. She is an equipment manager for the team apparently.

thanks guys....ya i would agree she is SMOKING!!

FairgroveJayhawk 10 years, 2 months ago

Well, KU played a solid 9 minutes of defense and here we are talking aboutTyrel's sister.

Taylor looked better. Cole still keeps playing good D without the O. X needs to find his mojo.

Tyrel's sister did look bored. I wonder if she can shoot the three too.

Dale Kroening 10 years, 2 months ago

As noted during the game the Big 12 is now 115-3 at home so far this year. No road game is going to be a gimme for the Hawks in the best conference in BB. Texas escapes ISU by 7 and Nebraska made their 3s and played us tough as expected. Good win, but we need more hustle like BM and X needs to quit making those lazy azz passes. He may have a sweet shot, but he sure could use another year, and Im not impressed at all with his defense or passing skills. A win is a win either way. And if you dont already know, yes this is Sherron's team, GO JAYHAWKS !!!!!!!!

lance1jhawk 10 years, 2 months ago

Tyrell Reeds sister is smokin!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! She is hotter than his 3

kansasbasketball 10 years, 2 months ago

fairgrovejayhawk yes tyrels sister can hit the 3 as good as tyrel if not better! i live about 30min from b-ton and went over and watched tyrel play every time it was in b-ton

MrPilot 10 years, 2 months ago

Would that be rudder there Mr. Pilot?

I would say, but then I'd be afraid Tyrel would come looking for me.

FairgroveJayhawk 10 years, 2 months ago

Marcus was the shafizzle, Brady made some educated plays look effortless, Sherron.. da man.

Wonder if she plays solid d?

Kent Wells 10 years, 2 months ago

The reason we are talking about his sister is because they ONLY played a solid 9 minutes. Only 9 effing minutes and they win by 12. They only needed to play defense for about 3 to beat Tennessee.

And I could really care less if she can shoot a three. I am more interested if she can stop dribble penetration or a decent post move, or is she like the rest of the KU defense and totally disinterested. And yes, I meant it the way it sounds.

kansasbasketball 10 years, 2 months ago

fairgrovejayhawk- if i remeber correctly it was about the same as tyrels in high school!

Kent Wells 10 years, 2 months ago

Mr. Pilot. Well, then lets say pitot tube. And don't be scared, we all know that Tyrell doesn't know how to fight. Point Plankin!

OMG! Hot and she can hit a trey. Back off fellas. I noticed her first!

lovemyhawks 10 years, 2 months ago

tyrel's mom and dad were on each side of his sister and they all looked bored and uninterested. she is dating stucky so look out boys!

good game. horrible start but much better as game progressed!! marcus is BACK and i'm thrilled to see it!!!! cole has not been good at all and i don't get it. the x man has struggled too. glad to see the rest of the team. blocks by tyrel and brady were great!!! glad for the win and a new season of 1-0. RCJH!!

FairgroveJayhawk 10 years, 2 months ago

The good thing about this game is they did have a stretch of good ball they can reflect on as a team and hopefully build to repeat for 40 minutes. There is some stiff competition coming soon and they'll need better consistency especially if the three isn't falling and Cole isn't scoring 15 to 20 points as he should be against at team like NU.... and etc, etc.

It was a 'W' but more importantly a game that can be used to build toward the team they have the potential to be.

lovemyhawks 10 years, 2 months ago

think i'd take marcus any day over cole so far THIS year......... cole has disappeared on us! sherron has been the man but i think he knows when he has to take over a bit and with a 1-12 start, that wasn't hard to figure out!! good finish though i thought we were to cause foul trouble, not be IN it ourselves!! wow.....

David Leathers 10 years, 2 months ago

Saying someone is "HOT" is one thing and saying, "She can manage my...err...nevermind. :-P" is just plain F*CKED UP! I don't care that I don't know Tyrel Reed or his sister, but seriously, if you had a sister and someone you didn't know said something that even resembled perversion wouldn't they end up looking like Cole Aldrich going for a rebound against K-State???

Saying she's hot is like saying that Tyrel is hot. They looked the same, just one has longer hair. grow up kids

Steve Brown 10 years, 2 months ago

UNC loses tonight likely goes up 2 spots in the poll.

TX will drop one before KYJelly so it will be nice to watch KY be #1 going into the dance, higher they are the harder they fall.

Road wins in conf. will be tough all year and everywhere. whre di I put that 3rd bottle of malbec?

KULA 10 years, 2 months ago

Looks like this team will go as far as Marcus can carry them. When he plays well, they look unstoppable. When he doesn't play well, they look like Cornell could beat them.

Jeff Hargate 10 years, 2 months ago

I don't think Self is rebuilding this team as much as they just played with "want-to". If you listened to his UT postgame comments we did tonight what he wanted us to do against the Vols. To come back from a 12-1 hole in about 5 min shows how tough we are becoming. Most teams would have folded after NU's fast start. Rock Chalk!

Scott Smetana 10 years, 2 months ago

KULA, you stole my post. The keys to this team belong in the Twins hands.
When they are on, we can beat anyone.

Nice defense in the second half Jayhawks.. I think Tyrel outplayed X tonight on both ends.

Steve Brown 10 years, 2 months ago

the way we are playing I fear 3-4 more losses before conf. play ends.

If we could only lose 2 @ Columbia< Manhattan, Austin and then one more surprise loss, we would have 3 in conf......might be enough to tie for another conference crown.

one game at a time, enjoy the ride...crisp passing, play as a team.

Martin Rosenblum 10 years, 2 months ago

Two topics:

Horndogs - Tyrel's sister's turn to travel with the team since they take turns. They discussed this, but most of us, apparently, developed hearing loss as our eyesight improved momentarily.Since the team took the bus to the game, and didn't fly, was she on the team bus? Tyrel must have to beat the guys off of her. Kuwells:I know what you're thinking now, you dog!

jaybate - Thanks for your insight. I didn't connect the ploy that HCBS was pulling until I read your comments and re-played that part of the game in my head. Attention all other D1 coaches: take note - genius at work!

Fearless Mid-Season Report:

1] Sherron is great college player but I have doubts his game will translate well in the NBA, but at least, he'll make a ton of money overseas.

2]Cole- right now he is a better fit as a pro player than a college player [ big, shot-blocker, solid screener, decent passer] There's always room in the NBA for a guy like him. Hell, if Ostertag can play for a decade, Cole is a cinch. He should declare because he has plateaued and his family needs the money!!

3] X will be a OAD...not because of what he is now but what he will be in three years. Can you spell P-O-T-E-N-T-I-A-L?

4] If the twins can stay focused and match therir improvement from last year to this year into this year to next year...they're gone after 2011

5] Brady and Tyrell will become the team leaders next season and will be beloved because of their grittiness and heads up play. They will always struggle against more talented, bigger opponents who possess the same competitive fire as they have.

6] TRob, like a Great Pyranese puppy will grow into a year.

7] Tyshawn is beginning to show flashes of "getting it" but I predict he will leave after next season.

8] I fear that with the back-up of guards plus Woolridge and maybe Shelby or Knight coming in, Elijah will leave after this season. Of all my predictions, I hope most that this one is wrong!!

9] Mario returning healthy and Travis returning pumped up will be a huge benefit to the team, in 2010-2011.

10] The prediction I want second most to be wrong is Jeff Withey never gains the mass or the weight to be nothing more than America's tallest #3.

11] Bill and Danny Dooley goes [PS Coach Dooley may have the worst 'doo in America. Between him and bald Danny, HCBS's toup looks fantastic!!]

12] Just a gut feeling, but this doesn't feel like a National Champion type team as of yet. In 2007-2008 you just knew we had a good chance. Right now we have a lot of work to do.

13] And finally, I will take a year of bad days as a Jayhwak before taking one good day as a Tiger.

lovemyhawks 10 years, 2 months ago

i agree about the twins....... when they have played well, we have done well. their 2 bad games were cornell and tenn and almost 2 losses. SOOOOO much better tonite.... marcus was AWESOME!!!!!!! maybe not starting was good. johnson FINALLY in but for less than 2 minutes....... what do you think about that?? was coach trying to shut up the people that have pushed to see him play?? cj never came in at all, did he?? just thought of that. hmmmmm......... brady and tyrel did well tonite. loved all the 3s but do NOT like watching us shoot those instead of going to basket so much. tonite it worked but it sure doesn't always and did NOT at tenn!! oh well...... let's hope for the best and hope we learned a lot tonite!!!! RCJH!!!

lovemyhawks 10 years, 2 months ago

i thought they said the managers took turns and that lacie was there to watch her brother tonite NOT as a manager. she was NOT dressed up and she was with her parents so really do not think she was "working". i think she was a spectator only and probably rode with her folks.

KULA 10 years, 2 months ago

God Jaybate, you've got a heckuva imagination. What game were you watching? If the Hawks don't shoot lights out 3's, this game is a dogfight right down to the end. Coaching's got nothing to do with being hot from 3. God I wish this team/coach would develop some kind if midrange game. We've all seen how a cold night from 3 can turn out. It does look like Self read some posts here and started tinkering with the idea of a press--DUH!!! Nice to see EJ & TRob get some minutes. Unfortunately, they suffer from Self's idea of a one and done--one mistake and you're done for the night.(He's coaching scared--afraid to let a player make a few mistakes to gain valuable experience) Btw, to everyone who thought TRob was the second coming of Danny Manning, think again. He isn't as good as either of the Twins were last year. But he will be--just needs time (& some PT) to develop. And if EJ got 8-12 min/game, he'd probably be averaging 7/8 pts/gm.

lovemyhawks 10 years, 2 months ago

i agree that robinson and johnson need more time...... they have great athletic ability and i wish they could play and help it develop!!

OCJHAWK 10 years, 2 months ago

Nothing to laugh about long range shots ralster. Just keep them in the bullseye.

bballdiehard 10 years, 2 months ago

Agree with what most everyone has said on here tonight. Last 9 minutes of the game finally looked like the pre-Cornell team again. The first half 3 point shooting contest was exhilerating, but terrifying as well. Since we got Marcus back tongiht, does that mean we can anticipate getting X back again in the near future? And finally, while Taylor did play better tonight, I don't remember who said it during/after the Tennessee game, but they were right about Taylor being awful at finishing at the rim. The announcers kept talking about how great he is at finishing, but he didn't finish a single time tonight, and then kept missing the beginning of his freethrows. I suppose 1 point is better than none, but it'd be great if he could learn to finish like Sherron or make all his free throws. Hope Saturday's game against Tech goes as well as the last time they came into Lawrence.

Game Summary: Emerging from the Confusion Contrived by a Coaching Genius

After intentionally and systematically destroying his Number 1 ranked, but inadequately integrated team's ability to perform effectively since the Temple win three game ago--more specifically, after having reduced a bunch of talented, hard working individuals into a scared, simpering bunch of confused, finger-pointing boys, Head Coach Bill Self deftly began the long, painstaking process of rebuilding the team in the image he has intended, since the Temple game, which apparently revealed to him that--Number 1 rank or not--KU needed to get waaay better.

It is from this moment, then, that one can now confidently predict this team will inexorably evolve under his wizardry to win a national championship.

Nine minutes into the second half of the Nebraska game Self transitioned from perhaps the most outrageous and audacious act by a coach of a Number 1 ranked team--the willful destruction of his own team--to a reconstruction phase in which the team ceased to be four guys from last year, plus Xavier, into five incredibly talented equals in a boat up $hit crick being offered custom tailored paddles by their captain, Bill Self.

Nine minutes into the second half of the Nebraska game Xavier began to play not like freshman, or an OAD, or an NBA body, or a phenom capable of dropping 30, but as an equal among equals. Xavier began to play defense like a D1 basketball player, rather than a talent easing through. (I would bet any amount of money that Carl had a very recent talk with his son, perhaps at Self's urging--the D1 basketball equivalent of the birds and the bees talk--the talk Larry Brown once had with Carl turned Carl into the basketball player he became under Brown, rather than the languishing talent he had been before Brown. You're playing for your life out here son, your meal ticket, your man hood. Either you guard like you've never guarded, or they neuter you. Its about seriousness of purpose, about doing it the right way; that's what Brown called it. Its the difference between men and boys. Bill Self is going to destroy this team, if he has to turn you and everyone else into men now. He's that crazy son. They all are at this level. Save him the trouble. Take the step yourself. I'll give you everything I have, so will your momma, but we can't give you this, X. You have to give it to yourself..take it yourself.

jaybate 10 years, 2 months ago

Nine minutes into the second half of the Nebraska game Sherron Collins accepted that while he was still the Sarge, and perhaps the greatest impact player on the perimeter in KU history, he was the leader, but not the carrier of this team.

Nine minutes into the second half of the Nebraska game Tyshawn Taylor suddenly found that his real role on this team is to be the mature, steadying, confident glue man capable of holding things together, capable of orchestrating the competitive fury of Sherron, the scoring elegance of X and the low block gravitational force of Cole. He understood and executed. He supervised them in making the impacts they are capable of making within the flow of the team, while playing solid, hard nosed basketball himself. Tyshawn Taylor discovered that though Sherron is the leader and virtuoso of The Team, it is Tyshawn who is actually the conductor, the man--the Russell Robinson if you will--who actually goes out and makes it all work, who sees what can happen when Sherron is in attack mode and cannot see--and who sees to it that what would be best to happen actually does happen.

I could go on and on here, player by player, but the point is made already.

Self is slowly letting the players regain essentially the same scheme and functions they had before he destroyed the team, but only when they perform as true team mates.

The moment Self feels them back slide, he destroys the team again. Play as individuals? Welcome to the terror of chaos and failure induced by your own coach. Play as true team mates? Welcome to a return to order and the joys of being better than your opponents.

Since Temple, the KU team has not been playing against other teams. The KU team has been playing against its wiley, nearly omnipotent, and psychologically ruthless coach.

Destroying a Number One team in mid season!!!

Just another chore for the new wizard.

Ron Franklin 10 years, 2 months ago

good stuff Jaybate.

good game hawks. good season so far. hope jaybate's right about Self's psychological schema.

wish some of you would just back of Tyshawn. i'd say Cole is underperforming just as much as Taylor is now, yet he catches all this crap because we question his character more than we question what he brings to the court. he's obviously "the" 2 & in Self's mind, or we'd have seen the beloved EJ & CJ tandem that many of you frequently call for.

also, did anybody notice that the full court press was beat by 1 pass on several occasions....not the antecdote were looking for.

i think the biggest problem with this team is the lack of chemistry, but be patient the cream will rise to the top. maybe that's why self keeps the rotation so shallow right now, because even with only 7-8 deep the players are having trouble finding their nitche.

i cant help but notice some people were embarrassed or ashamed of this team. i'd just like to point out that your pathetic. your spoiled, and have no concept of what pressure these young adults are dealing with. I know..."they're playing for KU, what do they expect.".... you remind me of the boss who asks for his report by the end of the day, yet you check in periodically throughout the day to gage progress. You become unhappy when at noon, I still haven't even began. But, when I've turned in a solid project at the end of the day your satisfied. If you cannot handle the progress and project of player and team development, then maybe you should check in at the end of the year and provide your final analysis then. It's ridiculous to be ashamed of a 15-1 team, a coach who wins 85% of his games, and a school that boasts the tradition were lucky to be a part of.

you don't know shame. winning is all you've ever known with this program, so when you don't get a W it hurts. you should be sympathetic that young men are out their fighting for their dream, and doing something that you could only dream of.

KULA 10 years, 2 months ago

Jaybate, do you write for soap operas?

WilburNether 10 years, 2 months ago

Not an encouraging performance. 30 minutes of crppy basketball, 6 minutes of good ball plus Nebraska going cold (no field goal for 6 minutes), then last 2 minutes back to crppy basketball.

This is a team the Hawks should have blown out by 25 or so. I'm not concerned about the margin; it's not about running up the score, but rather about a team that continues to play well below the level where its talent would indicate it should be playing by this point in the season.

They have eight weeks to get their act together.

For those morons here who want to say and hear only Pollyanna nonsense about our Jayhawks, and berate anyone who posts anything that is less than fawning over the team as being not a "true" fan, you can bet HCBS is thinking exactly what I wrote in the paragraphs above.

Ron Franklin 10 years, 2 months ago

complain, complain, complain....general comments about the game.

no specific insight as to how to actually improve

criticism is much easier to accept when one offers intelligent alternatives to an undesired behavior.

criticism is handled well around here. "being ashamed" or "embarrassed" because of an average performance is not.

how do you suggest they win by 25?....shoot 70% from the field as opposed to 60%?should they have pressed the entire game? maybe play some zone? maybe they should fire coach self after starting this season15-1?

expecting ku to win by 25, on the road, against a well-coached team is, well, moronic. with expectations like that, you'll surely be let down.

Ron Franklin 10 years, 2 months ago

and Self's thoughts...according to his mouth, are the following:

"We played a good Nebraska team tonight that was ready to beat us and came out on top," Kansas coach Bill Self said. "It was a fun team to coach tonight.

"I thought we were really ready to play."

4everahawk 10 years, 2 months ago

'Ready to play'? ready to play who? If not for SC, BM and TR we would have been toast!! Twins showed how much talent they have when pressed to contribute. CA can't shoot for crap lately and X is a joke. Did someone tell CA he ONLY has to rebound? Important certainly, but what happened to his scoring? Someone needs to get X off his lofty post and tell him this is a team sport and his rep prior to actually playing D1 ball certainly isn't helping us and it won't help him acquire his dream of 'one and done'. Hell, put in CJ and let him try to be a team player. TR looked like a deer in headlights! Shot of him on the bench clearly showed he was just terrified and completely out of it. Don't really know what the answer is since i am not a coach, but geez!!!
