KU coach Gill officially announces two signings

New head football coach Turner Gill is introduced to the Jayhawk Nation at a press conference on Monday.

New head football coach Turner Gill is introduced to the Jayhawk Nation at a press conference on Monday.

Kansas University football coach Turner Gill officially announced the first two signings of his tenure Monday, welcoming in junior college players Quinn Mecham and Dave Clark.

Mecham, a 6-foot-3, 205-pound quarterback, threw for 3,091 yards and 40 touchdowns — compared to 11 interceptions — last season as a sophomore at Snow (Utah) Junior College and led the Badgers to a 21-2 record in his two seasons at the school.

He was twice named the national junior college player of the week, as well.

Clark, a 6-foot-2, 197-pound cornerback who attended Independence (Kan.) Community College, earned second-team all-conference honors as a freshman before missing his entire sophomore season in 2009 due to injury.

Mecham is a three-star prospect, according to, while Clark was tapped as a four-star recruit.

“We are excited to have both of these players join our program,” said Gill, who is also expected to formally introduce his new coaching staff early this week. “They are both outstanding talents and we expect them to challenge for starting jobs right away.”

Brooks expected to return

Former Kansas linebacker Vernon Brooks, who decided to leave the program midway through the past season, has been reinstated by Gill, reported Monday.

A former transfer from Blinn (Texas) Community College, Brooks was expected to battle for a starting role in 2009, but never saw extensive playing time under former coach Mark Mangino.

Brooks told the Web site that he will be academically eligible for the 2010 season and plans to be present when the team undergoes its first meeting of the new year on Jan. 14.

Great job Coach Gill!!!

We're all rooting for you to bring in Grissom -- bigtime difference maker, an absolute beast & a great kid!!!!!!!!!!!!

AWESOME BABY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dirk Medema 10 years, 3 months ago

Clark will akso have 3 more years of eligibility. Any word on how his injury is healing?

It is also nice to see Brooks coming back. My guess is that we have a significant (effective) talent upgrade next year just b/c of the change in attitude.

Jonathan Briles 10 years, 3 months ago

dagger108 - Thats exactly what I was curious about. Does Clark have three years of eligibility because of the injury. I was assuming that he would have three years but just wanted some confirmation.

Getting Brooks to come back is a really special thing for us and I agree that our talent upgrade should be substantial, not only with Gill as a recruiter but as dagger mentioned, in an attitude stand point with our current players.

Not to blame any players but obviously in several games, (the last 7) the team quit this year. Not all of them, yet enough.

This year, just having the boys man up and with the right 'can do' attitude, with HCTG leadership, we'll have different effort on the turf. Whether that means more or less wins, who knows, yet the play will be all out all the time.

Next fall I trust the LJW will run two columns one of Mad Mark's post game excuses and TG post game taking responsibility comments. Would make interesting comparision reading and capture the last converts.

unfortunately, you're right, 81. i have had the misfortune of speaking with Soobawls a few times, she is a massive biggot. ridiculous in this day and age that someone like that would come on here and spread hate like that on a consistent basis.

karma's a b*tch, soobroke.

Great job Coach Coach!

Let's get Grissom!!

Bill Kackley 10 years, 3 months ago

I still haven't seen any new recruits. These 2 were recruits that were coming for MM. As far as players not playing hard because of the coach, that is bull roar. I never played a game in my life to "win one for the coach", played for my team and myself. If players laid down the second part of the season ,it is on their heads. And as far as MM's post-game comments, I listened on radio after every game and he took the brunt of the blame, game in, game out. I'm all for giving Gil credit where credit is due, and I hope he does a great job recruiting and coaching but I am not going to go all happy like a lot of you guys until he does something.

MitchumMan 10 years, 3 months ago

kackley - Gill has only had one commitment so far. A 2 star DB I believe. I could be wrong on his position. So far he's just trying to keep all the recruits from leaving. Which is a tough enough job. Most teams are already looking at recruits for 2011 so we are way behind the eight ball, but that had to be expected.

areyouserious 10 years, 3 months ago

Soobawls is a woman????? bwahahahahahahaha......................Soobawls, did you get Frank Martin's driveway scooped yet?

huskercarpenter 10 years, 3 months ago

it is good to see some info here, it is a possitive thing that turner is able to keep any of mangino's recruits that is an extreamly tough task. remember you will not get all the recruits that you want, that is just how it is. there will be some recruits that no one has heard of that will produce, just be patient.

by the way did anybody happen to watch the texas bowl, misery got spanked by a team that doesn't recruit for football they play with what they have. misery football is really kind of pathetic, but the upside to this is the football team is 100 times better than their fans. bottom of the barrel!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

they should have hired turner when they had the chance, but instead they hired stinkle. thats right it came down to turner and stinkle, they made the wrong desision. over the next few years they will learn that with the beatings they are going to be taking.

soobawls = LOSER Your the most negative fan Ive ever seen. Why even post hear, your in NO way a true fan IDIOT. All complaints from you, you sound like a little girl. Your SO ignorant you were saying fire Self in 08, that in itself shows how much of a dumbazz you are.

gchawk 10 years, 3 months ago

What was Clark's injury? What are the thoughts about where Mecham and Pick will fit in as quarterbacks?

huskercarpenter 10 years, 3 months ago

does anyone know if soobawls is a misery fan?

Jonathan Briles 10 years, 3 months ago

There may be some who already know of this story, but RB Joseph Randle committed to Oklahoma State in October, but Gill and Chuck Long have worked a little magic and have convinced Randle to allow an in home visit. He has said he is willing to listen to the Jayhawks and consider us again. This obviously is not a commitment, he is still solidly committed to OSU, but at least we are getting a second chance with one of the best athletes in the nation, and a bonus that he is from Kansas.

huskercarpenter 10 years, 3 months ago

kanfan27, thank you for this, if turner can get into their living room, you never know. remember when they interviewed him at the k.u. b-ball game he said his best attribute was communicating to the players and parents.

youowethehawks 10 years, 3 months ago

to call sooballs a "fan" would be a woefully inadequate use of the word. I think "hater" fits more appropriately.

For what it's worth, another RB named Randle? If we end up getting him, great! I certainly hope he doesn't turn out like the last one (off the field, anywho).

TrueBlue92 10 years, 3 months ago

So, how are those new year's resolutions going everyone?? I've never seen so many posts removed before in my life!! And not just this story, either!

Everyone have a bit of cabin fever due to all the snow??

MitchumMan 10 years, 3 months ago

KanFan27 thanks! I was just about to post the same thing. This would be huge if we could steal him from OSU. The kid looks like a stud! I could see him potentially on both sides of the ball.

100 10 years, 3 months ago

Bring in Randle!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

milehighhawk 10 years, 3 months ago

soobawls - HA!

what a joke.

yeah, I wish he didn't sign a 4-star recruit and a guy who got national JC player of the week a couple times.

do you ever say anything positive or contribute ANY analysis to the site? If so, you hide it well.

redlegger 10 years, 3 months ago

Not that I really care, but here is maybe some insight into our favorite poster who goes by soobawls...lyrics from Devo song....

Pretty little mongo Everybody wants her toilet Same old story She won't let nobody near it The way she teases them It's such a shame She's got all the huboons Crying out her name Soo bawls soo bawls She's got em howling She's got em growling Soo bawls soo bawls She's got em going clean out of their minds Soo bawls soo bawls There ain't a man in town who wouldn't Have her for his daughter Theys all trade their brains for One taste of her toilet water 1-2-3-4 tell the people what she wore They're all trying hard to call her up But her phone's been disconnected Since she sold her butt

new coaching staff, story and bio's at k.u. official web site. the staff has something like 213 years of experience and has been to 72 bowl games!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Omari Miller 10 years, 3 months ago

No offense, but to assert that Gill hasn't accomplished much because he's only regained the previous coach's recruiting commitments is more than a little misguided and misses the point. The first objectives of any coach taking over a program in a tailspin are to: 1) put a strong staff together; and 2) retain/regain as many of the best commitments as possible. And Gill has done that wonderfully.

Look at Florida. This is a team that was one win away from yet another National Championship game; a team that the press adores with everyone's hero at QB. The coach (who many say is the best in the game) waffles on taking a little time off and suddenly recruits are jumping ship.

Then there's our program. Not yet anywere close to the status of the Floridas, Alabamas, Texases, et al. We have a horrible season that ends in losing all conference games except the very first one against a subpar team that we only won against because of an errant pass on the last play, the coach is run out of town underneath the cloud of a player abuse scandal, a new coach is hired after a weeks, long delay, and that coach comes in to immediately shore up commitments? Sorry, but that's a hell of an accomplishment.

Additionally, Coach Gill has put together a staff that, by most accounts, is comprised at every level by proven recruiters, and terrific coaches. There's plenty still to be done before we can declare this transistion a resounding success, but all things considered, I think we're off to a good start.

Also, regarding Geneo Grissom, I think it's true that should Coach and his staff be able to regain him, you have to Gill some sort of medal. But I think it we might have been in the same circumstance with hoping to re-win Grissom even if Mangino had remained coach. Grissom's stock has blown up over the course of the last year and now he has OU as well as LSU putting the fullcourt press on in the wake of a horrible season at KU. Hopefully Coach Gill can show him that he belongs at home with KU where he'll help create the dynasty.

huskercarpenter........Refresh my memory: did Buddy Wyatt coach under the much-maligned Bill Callahan at Nebraska? What did people think of him at the time?

huskercarpenter 10 years, 3 months ago

k.u. i am not sure, the callahan era was a depressing time for me. i will try to find out when he was at nebr.

KU 10 years, 3 months ago

huskercarpenter......I think Wyatt coached some pretty good defensive linemen at NU.....probably even had Suh when he was a young pup.

JBurtin 10 years, 3 months ago

Both Quinn Mecham and Ray Mitchell are pure Turner Gill recruits.

As for Joseph Randle. He is in fact the brother of John Randle, but he hasn't had the discipline problems of his older brother. I think he learned a few good lessons from watching his brother enroll in the school of hard knocks.

If Gill can reel him in, then I'd love to see him in Crimson and Blue.

huskercarpenter 10 years, 3 months ago

k.u. i just did a search on my 2 best husker web sites, didn't get anything makes me think he was there earier in his career. but i will keep looking.

also you might be interested in something i read within the last couple of weeks. go to and look for the 10 best and 10 worst moments last decade. you may have to look beyond the first page. it has been a few days. jawhawks chests will be puffing out a little bit. (hint- it is on the worst moments list.)

Tony Bandle 10 years, 3 months ago

I know everyone including myself has blasted soobawls in some manner., however, if you subtract the sarcasm, the venom, the self hate and the mean-spiritness of her posts, she sometimes is asking tough questions that KU fans might not like to hear...........then again, who needs the aggravation!! away, my dear!! I can hardly wait!!

rockchalks7 10 years, 3 months ago

Joseph randle has scheduled an official visit to ku Jan 22 also.. Has the in home next week again and then the official... also eddrick lofton (4 star safety) has been in touch with ku and just decommitted from ou...

There is still three weeks before signing day for KU's new coaches to get their mojo on with recruiting.

Its been quite untill very recent, but the staff is finally solidified. They needed to review film and talk to the current players to guage what they have. Then they will target hard the players they like in the positions the see upcoming holes in. I am excited to see the supposed quality of players that are hinting interest at becoming Jayhawk football players. I think I remenber from a long ago article that we only had twenty or so scholorships to give out this year. If anyone has info on this, please let us know.

KU 10 years, 3 months ago

rockchalks7.......Great info! Where can I find it?

KU 10 years, 3 months ago

I don't need to watch any tape to tell you one thing: We've got a LOT of work to do recruiting linemen. This game is won and lost in the trenches. Our skill guys could have held their own the past couple of years against the Big 12 South if we had better line play. The number of linemen we have committed this year is very disheartening. I hope these guys concentrate on bringing in some big uglies over the next several weeks.

JBurtin 10 years, 2 months ago

Gill did offer offensive tackle Chad Kolumber the other day. 6'8, 280 lbs

Not a well known recruit, but he's definitely got the frame to build on.

huskercarpenter 10 years, 2 months ago

wow, 6'8" that is incredible. offensive line is the one area that you can manufacture the players in the weight room. let stram the strength and conditioning coach work on him for few months and bam! you have a 330 lb. monster.

thanks to all of you who have posted some info about recruits it is greatly appreciated.

huskercarpenter 10 years, 2 months ago

strength coach is aarron stamn not stram, sorry

TRUEHEART 10 years, 2 months ago

From what I can conclude from reading and hear from my Hutchinson KU friends, Grissom looks to be slipping away. I know it's powerful to hear from the head coach, and Coach Gill has talked with him and Gill is no recruiting slouch, but we need to get Reggie Mitchell down there NOW. I knew Reggie well when he was at KU before and he was a recruiting machine even then (Stubblefield, Gilbert Brown, etc). I know our new coach and staff are all good recruiters, but Reggie was hired in large part because of his recruiting prowess - and he IS recruiting coordinator. Losing Grissom would be a disappointment, not just losing his skills and player potential, but we need to demonstrate we can land the few good players out of Kansas. Already a few have gone elsewhere - like 5-star Wichita QB Bell to OU.

Dan Harris 10 years, 2 months ago

Grissom I'm afraid is heading south to OU , that will be a loss that we bitch about for years to come!

100 10 years, 2 months ago

Paging Reggie Mitchell...

ASAP: Get in your car & bring Grissom to where he belongs!!!!!!!!!

MitchumMan 10 years, 2 months ago

rockchalks7, where did you get your info on Eddrick Lofton? I can't find anything that says he's interested in KU. That would be nice if he is though. I'll take a blue chip recruit any day of the week, even if he does seem kind of small for a safety.

huskercarpenter 10 years, 2 months ago

i was wrong in my last post aaron stamn is special teams, not sure who strength coach will be.

k.u. yes you are right buddy wyatt was at nebr. under callahan. lets not hold the scumbag callahan against him.

babyjay1 10 years, 2 months ago

Soobawls cannot possibly be a real KU fan or a real woman - what a joke...

huskercarpenter - thank you! You make up for some really difficult NU fans we've had on here in the last 4 months. It's nice to have someone with constructive thoughts from other Big 12 schools share thoughts, not just slam us on our board....
