Bubba Cunningham staying at Tulsa

Kansas University’s search for a new athletic director, which had reached its destination at the doorstep of Tulsa University’s Bubba Cunningham, has resumed.

Cunningham, who according to multiple sources was offered the KU job earlier in the week, signed a contract extension to stay put.

Tulsa president Steadman Upham announced the deal late Thursday afternoon, sending shock waves throughout KU’s national fan base.

“Bubba and I have a great partnership,” Upham said, “and his service to TU has been marked by exceptional progress by our student-athletes, including 31 Conference USA championships. We’re on a roll and I’m confident we’ll continue to build on our remarkable momentum and national visibility.”

Cunningham was not made available for comment.

The last time Kansas was in the market for a new athletic director, it didn’t get its first choice, either, and was rejected by an athletic director from the same city.

After Al Bohl’s departure, then-chancellor Robert Hemenway first offered the job to Oral Roberts athletic director Mike Carter, who when pressured for an answer, declined because of family considerations.

It’s not known what inspired Cunningham’s change of heart. KU chancellor Bernadette Gray-Little, in staying consistent with her no-comment policy on the search, did not issue a statement in response to being turned down by the athletic director from a school that competes in Conference USA.

Gray-Little, according to multiple sources, also interviewed Notre Dame deputy athletic director Bill Scholl on the recommendation of the search committee headed by Ray Evans. Some of those same sources indicated that does not mean he is next in line and the search is expected to continue. The committee had contact with athletic directors from several schools and could resume contact with candidates it found most impressive.

Congratulations to all of our local media for, once again, presenting rumors and reports from Oklahoma media as "sources" for your stories. And, once again, it turns out most of your stories proved worthless. Every time you do this (as you did consistently throughout the conference realignment madness) you lose another big chunk of credibility with us, your customers, the public.

LAJayhawk 4 years ago

You speak as if Keegan still had any credibility left.

chickensandwich 4 years ago

seriously. Do you think he's at the airport right now, making up more stories?

d_prowess 4 years ago

You have to wonder how someone chooses to stay at a place like Tulsa over KU.

MitchumMan 4 years ago

Let's not forget how MM was 2-10 his first year. KU backer, as the name would suggest? Not buying it! More like KU hack! Support the coach as he turns this thing around. As you could see this year, the cupboard was pretty bare.

DevilHawk 4 years ago

We are likely to have one or two more likely losing seasons in football. If conference realignment continues earlier than expected, then we would be in an incredibly bad position.

Add Little's arrest, Morningstar's DUI last year, the problems with Selby's eligibility, how Mangino was fired, and the ticket scandal, and the new AD has a lot to deal with - immediately.

Ben Kliewer 4 years ago

Everything you just listed, except for Little's arrest and the football program, is pretty much ancient history by now. I'm pretty sure anyone looking at Kansas' athletics programs isn't looking at Brady's DUI, or even the problem with Selby's eligibility because that's been ironed out by now.

brcook99 4 years ago

You've got to be kidding me .... turning down a Big 12 school with one of the top 3 basketball programs in the nation?!? Something doesn't smell right here. What does Bubba know that we don't?

chicagoeddie 4 years ago

makes you wonder how screwed up things are at KU to want to prevent people from coming here...

GilbertAZ 4 years ago

Not the right hire anyway. I say get the guy from Kentucky.

David Reed 4 years ago

sure let's hire the guy who brought in the biggest piece of slime to coach their bball team.PASS

Don Everett 4 years ago

Agreed supermario15!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

GilbertAZ 4 years ago

From everything that I have read, he thinks the biggest mistake he made while at Kentucky was to hire Calapari, He wants out. They say he is one of the best in the country at fund raising. He would come from a school with a rich tradition in basketball. Just becouse he is currantly at Kentucky doesn't mean anything.

GilbertAZ 4 years ago

Oh, by the way, I forgot to mention that Mitch Barnhart is from Kansas. Ottowa!

Jeffery Barrett 4 years ago

Everyone here in KS already knew that.

KPOP 4 years ago

Journalists are ridiculous. To print a story about him coming to Kansas , blah blah, blah, is absurd. It isn't a story until he's signed and his bags are packed and he's in Lawrence with a signed contract. The journalists have egg on their face on this story. I am ashamed of you.

therog 4 years ago

Nothing like reporting stuff before its "news" giving Tulsa the chance to gather the troops as well as raising the stakes for KU. Thanks, media. But he's not the only quality candidate out there. We'll be fine.

ahpersecoachingexperience 4 years ago

Bubba was my best good friend.

Not discouraged by this at all. If we would of wanted him we would of got him. I'm still believing there is someone from a big school waiting in the wings until bowl season is over.

hailtoku 4 years ago

If we would of wanted him we would have offered him the position.... and we did!

I'm sure every AD in the nation is waiting to jump on a sinking ship. Maybe we could get the AD from Tennessee or USC ... maybe Miami or UCLA.... The only difference between those jobs and the one at KU is that the person would have to move to Lawrence, KS.

We are so lucky to be in the Big 12 right now.

ahpersecoachingexperience 4 years ago

We did offer him the job or did a reporter screw this one up?

And I think you may of struck gold with your USC hire. Bring dude in, have him pay some players which builds our football program, then gets us into a major conference. We will be locked into the conference before the NCAA catches onto us.

Ashwin Rao 4 years ago

We needed the excitement! Things were getting boring here! The regular old stuff... people stealing tickets, football teams beating up basketball teams, basketball players being arrested, the football team falling on it's collective face etc. Thanks, Keegan for providing us the excitement!

kcglowboy 4 years ago

Don't blame JUST Keegan -- ALL the local media made the exact same arrogant, lazy mistakes by putting too much faith in "reports" from other media outlets. Just as it was with conference realignment, these "journalists" seemed to think that the more something is said or spoken, the more true it must be.

Kyle Crenshaw 4 years ago

it wasnt just the local media either...even Espn was reporting it too. also I dont ever recall (and i may be wrong) them actually saying it was a "done deal" just that it appeared like he would take the job...those little words are important.

GDHAWKS 4 years ago

This is the problem with internet journalism. Check your sources before you report it.... What happened to signing on the dotted line before reporting? Bush League!!!

waywardJay 4 years ago

everyone wants to be the one with tthe scoop..... everyone wants to Be Edward R. Murrow, and no one wants to report like him..... GD, Journalism died a very public death when Faux news was founded.

HonestAbe1981 4 years ago

This has the Chancellor written all over it.

rob4lb 4 years ago

I guess this can be interpreted in many ways. Maybe there was not good chemistry with the chancellor; maybe there was never an offer and this was speculation. It has to be a blow to KU's collective ego if Cunningham chose to stay at mid-major Tulsa instead of making a career jump to BCS major conference KU. I enjoy reading these boards, but I think some of the people who think we can get someone to jump from a major BCS school are overly optimistic. I think we are viewed as a one-trick pony (ie basketball) whose trick isn't all that compelling. I know that hurts. I think any potential AD will conclude that elevating the football program to even the middle of the Big 12 will be a very difficult task.

d_prowess 4 years ago

How can people be ripping on the journalists in this? It is there job to report this stuff before it happens if they hear it is going down. I would rather know that Bubba was our target and a deal couldn't get done instead of having them report nothing.

therog 4 years ago

couldn't disagree more. It's just fodder now for radio talk shows, etc. We don't need to know it before it happens.

bigXIImatters 4 years ago

Nick Wright has far and above been the worst to report on this issue. He said yesterday "Its all but a done deal. Bubba Cunningham is the next AD for Kansas." Yet today on his second rate radio program he denies saying this and discredits every other local sports writer/journalist for stating the same. What a low life!

Don't sweat it KU fans, we will find a qualified candidate for the position. Once Bowl Season is over and things quite down before NCAA Bball tourney time, the real candidates will emerge.

I have heard that Mark Cuban is dabbling in Collegiate Athletics these days with his 2 bit plan for a playoff system to replace the BCS system. He would make a kickass AD. Drive, passion and boatloads of money! Just kidding about this.

Justin Anderson 4 years ago

Becasue by posting speculation Tulsa was able to put the pressure on and raise the stakes. Why do you want to know that we offered bubba? how does it benefit you? what benefits you if you are a fan of KU athletics is getting the right guy. The reporters are trying to sell newspapers and advertising they are not trying to "inform you". they want your money. How does it benefit you to knwo that bubba was our target and the deal fell through. The TCU football coach would be at KSU right now if his deal hadn't been leaked.

kcglowboy 4 years ago

Very funny, d_prowess. For a split second, I almost believed you were serious when you wrote this. Now I realize it was just DEEP sarcasm.

It WAS sarcasm, right?

LAJayhawk 4 years ago

If they had a solid, ACTUAL source that told them KU had extended an offer, then that would be reporting. All anyone went off of was pure, unadulterated gossip. Keegan, himself, explained in article after article how tight the lid was on the search and how all he had was some speculation blowing in the wind. In some of his articles he just threw out random names from the top of his head.

This was simply gossip reporting and very poor journalism across the board. From Tulsa to Lawrence.

Tabloid level reporting.

d_prowess 4 years ago

So you are suggesting that Bubba was not extended the offer? Really?

Matt Kenton 4 years ago

Journalists did a great job on this one. The reports were true and once it was leaked the wheels went into motion at Tulsa to keep him. Would those of you who are critical really rather be left in the dark until a press conference is announced?

kcglowboy 4 years ago

What are you, Keegan's grandson? Please tell me you don't for ONE SECOND think any local journalist did a great job on this. Please.

Matt Kenton 4 years ago

Not grandson, secret love child.

LAJayhawk 4 years ago

If no one had a source saying an offer was extended -- which to my knowledge, no one had -- then yes, darkness it is.

That is called responsible journalism.

ampthatman 4 years ago

But, but, but we're the university that's too good for people from mid-major conferences!!!

kuballhawk 4 years ago

"Before word broke that Cunningham would be staying at KU" ... staying at KU??? Not Tulsa/TU? Now I'm really confused...

Sam Constance 4 years ago

If he prefers to stay at Tulsa over Kansas, then good riddance.

Carter Patterson 4 years ago

Quit panicking people. Geez. This will go down with Harbaugh fables. We don't know how close either party was. 1) We may never have offered him. 2) We may have offered him with conditions like....you can't leave us for Notre Dame unless you stay 5 years...3) Who knows. Maybe he wanted more $$$ then we were willing to pay. 4) Maybe we have another candidate that's above him.

There is a reason why ESPN never reported Bubba to KU as being true.

jakzhumans 4 years ago

There's open speculation in the Tulsa paper that Cunningham turned it down because he wouldn't have been allowed to terminate Gill since his contract has no buyout. Not saying that's true, but their main sports columnist has already published the speculation.

jaybate 4 years ago

Turner Gill can't be that bad.

Surely a coach is still allowed a year of two to rebuild.

Post Bubba, here are a few other wild rumors that Keegs may write some stories on.

Wild Rumor: Bill Self to leave KU for Tulsa.

Wild Rumor: Bubba was ready to come, but he insisted the LJW fire Keegs for leaking the story, The World Corporation would not knuckle under, and so Bubba refused to come.

Wild Rumor: Tulsa is joining the B12.

Wild Rumor: Chancellor Bernie has decided to hire Chris Rock as AD, instead of Bubba.

Wild Rumor: Bill "Bubba" Clinton now replaces Bubba Cunningham as the top candidate.

Wild Rumor: Lew Perkins has been cleared by the ethics committee and is going to be rehired at twice his previous salary.

Wild Rumor: Barry Hinson is the new KUAD.

Wild Rumor: Former Chancellor Bob Hemenway, on who's watch the entire mess started is being considered as the next KUAD.

Wild Rumor: Danny Manning will become the first combination big man coach and AD in D1 history.

Wild Rumor: Mario Little will become the next

Wild Rumor: The Judds are going to become the next KU AD.

Note: All fiction. No malice.

jaybate 4 years ago

Oh, well, now we have to step down from Tulsa and hire the AD from Notre Dame. :-)

jhawkrulz 4 years ago

Assistant AD of ND, but still much better...I think there are a lot of options way better than the Tulsa guy. He probably read all the posts on this side and decided he really wasn't qualified for the job.

jayhawk4life15 4 years ago

unfortunately, i think a bunch of averages joes who comment on newspaper stories might not have that much influence... easy to tell ourselves but probably a bit of a stretch

Harrison Green 4 years ago

Bubba used to be the Assistant AD at ND before he got these other AD gigs. I don't see how you think a current Assistant AD is better than a former one who has had AD experience.

Keegan...hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha.

Andy Tweedy 4 years ago

I don't believe for one minute that Gill's contract did or did not influence him coming here. Even if he were to hire his own guy, it would take a few years to see if it worked out, and there's usually plenty of money in the donors wallets if Gill's time here is bad enough that he wants a new hire. I think he either didn't get offered the job or he did, was never sure if he wanted it, and Tulsa made it worth his while to stay there. Just my two cents. As for who gets the job, I really don't know much about any of these candidates, except what Keegan keeps reporting, and I'm not forming my opinion on anything Keegan writes.

Jack Wilson 4 years ago

Seriously, just pick the AD that Bill Self wants.

Roy Scherff 4 years ago

Rumor has it that the Idaho State AD is in town.

jaybate 4 years ago

Roy Williams has been offered the job, too.

midhawktx 4 years ago

This is bad in every aspect. Rumor here in Tulsa is that there were several factors in Bubba not accepting the AD position: 1. The ticket scandal is a bigger problem than reported and that the Williams fund will be depleted soon. 2. Because of the fiasco with this years football team, donors are not donating to replenish the fund. 3. KU's tie to KSU for conference re-alignment. No home this summer and no home three years from now with the way our team looked this year. 4. The chancellor is a joke down here and not considered friendly to atheletics.

Those are the rumors. Not good...if we can't bring an AD from Tulsa here, who is going to come here.

Ethan Berger 4 years ago

Quit with this Gill sucks crap. Here let me give you a few examples. Miami of Ohio coach first year went 1-11 this past year he went 10-2 and won the conference. Last year the University of Texas went to the National Championship and then 5-7 this year. Last year our team went 5-7 with the all powerful Mark Mangino and we only lost two more this year. We lose Reesing, Briscoe, Meirer, and Stucky. And ya’ll expect the greatest team ever. You guys keep saying Gill doesn’t know how to evaluate talent, but do ya'll? What have you done in the football world? One year and you give up on Gill. Acting like Mangino was God, but he gave us that orange bowl and then two strait disappointing years. You keep saying Gill can’t find talent with our qb. Didn’t Mangino have Reesing Redshirted tell that Colorado game? 3 years is a good time to evaluate the coach. Should UT fire Mack Brown because they went from the best to the worst? College Football is unpredictable; if you truly watch football you know this.

Andy Tweedy 4 years ago

That's a pretty good point about Reesing. Meier was clearly hurt almost the whole year, and pretty much single-handedly lost the Toledo game, a game that could have gotten us to a bowl game. Sometimes, players just aren't ready, maybe Reesing wasn't until late in the season. We had a mess at QB we had this year. A JUCO transfer with no arm, a sophomore who freezes when he drops back and a redshirt freshman with no college experience. Gill was in a no-win on that one!

Ethan Berger 4 years ago

Remember Swanson back from the team that beat Houston in the Bowl. That was his only start and he threw for over 400 yards. People forget sometimes its hard to tell if he will be good in games if he isn't all that good in practice.

midhawktx 4 years ago

But in this scenario, it is a huge part of the equation. You can't ignore the fact that donors are running away and that is due, in large, to Gill's first year.

Ethan Berger 4 years ago

Are you sure it is that? That ticket scandal was a major issue and that would have donors running too. Where are these reports coming from that the Donors are running?. I have not heard much about that

midhawktx 4 years ago

It all started with the ticket scandal and Gill's first year has added to it. The info is coming from donors themselves. Its not about Gill sucks; its that KU won't have a big time conference home b/c of Gill's ability. Its all above.

Ethan Berger 4 years ago

Yea I just saw that. I'm not to worried about donors. All you have to do is win. My rant is coming from many of the fans claiming that Gill is the worst thing ever, when they haven't even given him a chance.

midhawktx 4 years ago

I get the rant...it gets old hearing the same thing. My point has to do with the AD position specifically. Oh well...at least Selby plays Saturday.

Ethan Berger 4 years ago

yea, understood. I just hope our AD is good, don't care who he is. I have been waiting on Selby, it will be great.

DevilHawk 4 years ago

Actually, UT should fire Mack Brown because he just lost them their assumed next head coach.

Ethan Berger 4 years ago

Well, Mack Brown doesn't pay the assistants. Florida gave him a nice little deal.

David Hodges 4 years ago

@Hawk90 Great Points! I'd like to add a few more though. We lost out on a Juco QB and the world continues to fall to the Haters. But if you look at the recruiting rationally... Gill has done a good job of recruiting where we need it most. Its pretty tough, even if your the best QB playing the game, to get anything done when your offensive line is terrible. Pretty hard to be a pocket passer if no pocket ever forms. What is the jewel of Gill's next recruiting class? Any coincidence it the offensive line?
My point is most of the Gill haters on this site are irrational and have hated him before he even accepted the job. They haven't given him a chance since day one and have placed unreachable expectations on a coach who was left with a depleted football team. But I'm sure one of the Haters will point out how I'm wrong and then make another irrational argument about how a guy should be able to turn around a team that went 5-7, lost several play-makers, and had to deal with multiple injuries. But those points don't matter to someone who's decided to not give the guy a chance. Oh Well... at this point I'm hoping all the Gill haters will find another school to root for because, to me, their hate has no place in the Jayhawk Nation. Give him a reasonable amount of time to turn things around, like every other program in the nation does, and then form your opinions.

Maurice King 4 years ago

Please please no more committees......Kevin Pritchard should be the new KU AD.

kcglowboy 4 years ago

That's the best idea I've heard yet.

Kyle Sybesma 4 years ago

That is a great idea. Although I would be in favor of an AD with more of a football background. I think we've learned from this summer what rules college athletics and we've proven we know what we're doing in basketball. KU has a long way to go to build a football program and I'm 100% behind Gill.

I find it interesting that ESPN even reported we offered the position to the guy and it looked like he was going to accept.

http://sports.espn.go.com/ncaa/news/story?id=5922664

Now we don't get him? This is embarrassing. We must have a very undesirable AD position.

KU_FanSince75 4 years ago

Wasn't HCBS that said, "If Mr. Cunningham was the AD, he would be a good fit for KU?" I thought what Self said was silly because according to a lot of media outlets (including the ones in the Wichita, KS area) said it was going to happen. Darn, can't show anymore "Nash Bridges" video clips where he is saying, "Bubba."

DevilHawk 4 years ago

The dean candidate from Oregon would have been a bad hire and would not have added anything to the law school. Actually, I don't understand how he was even a finalist for the position.

Of the finalists for the position, James Chen should have been the one offered the position. I guess that's what happens when the selection committee doesn't involve someone with a technology focus.

As to the question: KU Law and the KU Athletics Department are in two very different situations.

Hank Cross 4 years ago

What an insult. Something must be really wrong for the freakin' Tulsa AD to turn down the job. If its the Kansas Board of Regents insisting that KU and KSU remain linked, they are extremely short-sighted and stupid. If for example, KU had gone to the P10, KU would've had more out-of-state applications from better students, whom KU could've charged more and would've raised the academic profile of the student body. That's what's going to happen to Nebraska as it becomes a B10 school. But, something tells me the problem isn't KSU.

Krohnutz 4 years ago

I'm still pissed about their insistence to keep them linked. Tradition is great, it has worked wonders for the extinct.

honk_for_hawks 4 years ago

Who wants to bet they didn't even offer him the position and this is just another case of reporters wanting to be FIRST? How many times over the summer did we hear "lebron to new jersey is a done deal" or "bosh and wade to chicago could be announced as soon as tomorrow"? I remember back in the old days when editors wouldn't let you print something until it was verified as fact, not verified by some random source who no one knows the name of. I'm so tired of hearing about trades and coaching hires and free agent signings that never happen because someone jumped the gun. Until it is verified by the university or bubba himself, why would you print it and risk looking like a moron?

DevilHawk 4 years ago

If the person reporting is already largely considered to be a moron, then the person has nothing to lose if he is wrong and everything to gain if he is right. Plenty of examples to pick from out there.

As a UNC alumni I have loved the job he has done at UNC. My concern would be that he'd be in over his head. UNC just entered division I and it would be a huge jump to KU. And as an alumni I'd like him to continue the great work he's doing at UNC.

jaybate 4 years ago

Wow, I read this one wrong big time. At first, I was surprised KU was going to settle for a Tulsa level AD, but then I was able to rationalize that it was going to happen for lots of reasons, which were either wrong, or outweighed by money.

Maybe oil folks kicked in some bucks to keep Bubba in Tulsa.

One thing for sure: if push comes to shove, Keegan would take the KUAD job. :-)

And Bubba owes Tom at least one letter of rec, after that holy rosary blessing he bestowed on Bubba. :-)

jaybate news service (jns):

Dateline: Washington DC

Slug: US Prez to step down and become KU AD...

jns stringers deep, deep, deep inside the White House report that late Friday afternoon, President Barrack Dubya Obama will announce that he is resigning as President of the United States to pursue the job he has always dreamed of doing: Athletic Director of The University of Kansas.

jns stringers indicate that KU Chancellor Bernie Grey-Little recently flew to London to meet secretly with President Obama, who was himself meeting secretly with British leaders to decide which Middle Eastern country to invade next,

The rumor is that Grey-Little wore a very, very slinky black dress to the meeting held in a cottage in the Cotswolds and proceeded to charm the President off his feet with stories about the glories that he would achieve while KU's AD.

The beleaguered President said he was ready to get better at something other than politics after the hard knocks he has taken the first two years of his presidency.

As a KU grad who has lived in Tulsa for 30 years, I have been very disappointed to read the lack of understanding about Tulsa the city, Tulsa University the school, athletic program, and the AD, Bubba Cunningham. First, Tulsa is an incredible city with amazing wealth, classy people, and TU puts out first class intercollegiate competition at one of the smallest Division 1 schools in the country. Tulsa University is known for its academics. As for the name Bubba, I can tell you the stereotype portrayed by the name is misleading, because everything about Tulsa University is about class and style. If you don't believe any of the above, I want to invite you to drive by the school for a look see at what $100 million in campus improvements from private sources looks like. Take a look at the complete renovation of Skelly Stadium while you drive by the school which is located next to the new basketball arena. I am glad Bill Self didn't come directly from TU, or he might not be the current coach at ole KU. I know how things work over at the school. The big alum money are some smart dudes and they liked Bubba well enought to make it worth his while to stay. Let's all hope KU can get someone as good or better than Mr. Cunningham.

Studogg 4 years ago

mikehawk-- That is the most rational and most helpful comment posted on this thread. I just read the entire thing. Thank you for your insight. I'm betting its probably closer to the truth than any of the other "this is why he's staying" rumors.

That is definitely how it went down. The deal with Tulsa was sweetened. Listen we had a good choice with Cunningham, nothing to be ashamed about with the search committee.
