KU volleyball moves to 3-0; Garlington MVP

— Kansas University’s volleyball team picked up two more victories, and the Jayhawks’ Karina Garlington earned MVP honors Saturday at the Bluejay Invitational.

KU beat Creighton, 3-1, Saturday night after a 3-0 sweep earlier of San Francisco.

Against the hosts, Garlington had 13 kills. She averaged 4.00 kills per set on a .290 attack percentage in KU’s three matches over the weekend.

“We played well at the right times,” KU coach Ray Bechard said after the 25-21, 27-29, 25-14, 25-22 victory. “I thought our transition offense in set three was terrific. We play a lot of young kids, and our veterans did a good job of meshing with them. That mix will help us mature as a team.”

KU improved to 3-0 on the season for the first time since 2005, when the Jayhawks opened the year with four-straight victories. Creighton fell to 1-2 with the loss.

Kansas’ Allison Mayfield had a team-best 14 kills and added 20 digs for her first double-double of the season to go along with four total blocks as she was named to the all-tournament team. Senior Melissa Manda led all defenders with 21 digs. Freshman Brianne Riley contributed 13 in the effort.

Against the Dons, red-shirt freshman Caroline Jarmoc served up five aces and added six kills in a 25-17, 25-19, 25-18 sweep.

Jarmoc's five aces were the most by a Jayhawk since Melissa Grieb scored five aces versus Kansas State on Oct. 1, 2008. As a team, Kansas recorded 11 service aces, its most since collecting 11 versus NC State back on Aug. 30, 2008.

“Serving was the key,” Bechard said. “We were outstanding, with 11 aces and only four errors. That dictated the flow of the match.”

Kansas will have two days to rest before it welcomes UMKC to the Horejsi Center at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.
