KU’s Tharp to miss this season, may take medical redshirt

Kansas University football coach Turner Gill confirmed today that linebacker Huldon Tharp has suffered a foot injury and may take a medical red-shirt this season.

Tharp, a two-way standout from Mulvane, started seven games last season and finished fifth on the team in tackles with 59.

Tharp, 6-foot, 220 pounds, entered 2010 expected to compete to retain his starting spot. However, he missed the final few days of spring drills because of a foot injury and was held out of the spring game in late April.

The latest setback appears to be a reaggravation of the same injury that bothered him this spring.

In addition, Gill announced that wide receiver Tertavian Ingram also had a foot injury that would keep him out 3 to 4 weeks, and running back Rell Lewis has a knee injury that will keep him out 2-3 weeks.

Check back for updates.

      What depth?

If Gill gets this team bowl eligible I'll eat my - oh, forget it!

Agreed Montereyjay ! 4-8 is realistic. A bowl game would be quite an accomplishment for this team.

This just makes me remember the quarterback disaster that was 5/6 years ago where it seemed like every guy we threw out there got hurt. Maybe we can get the bad breaks out of the way now and get only good breaks during the season.

  6. Jhaux (anonymous) says…

If he IS definately missing the season, why is it he MAY take a medical redshirt? Would there be a reason not to?

    1. bcoJayhawk (anonymous) replies

Tharp is currently a sophomore. By the time his senior season is over with there may be other linebackers ahead of him on the depth chart and he may choose not to pursue another year of college football.

    2. dagger108 (anonymous) replies

You give the answer in your question.
"If" is not definitely. Spikes is definitely out for the year.
It would that Huldon may be sufficiently healed by November to allow him to be the decisive player against mizzoo and our bowl opponent.

      1. wiseapple (anonymous) replies

Last I checked taking a redshirt doesn't mean he can't decide to get rid of it and come and play should he end up healing faster than expected. Take your redshirt now and make a decision about playing when the time comes. Makes the best sense to me.

And as much as I doubt there being a lot of backers ahead of him by the time his senior year rolls around, having a year of eligibility available to him doesn't mean he has to take it. He can walk away from football tomorrow if he so chooses. Making a decision now based on what may be happening in 2 years would be foolish to say the least.

        1. JBurtin (anonymous) replies

Actually you have to apply for the medical redshirt and the decision whether or not to grant it is up to the NCAA, so it's not entirely up to him to take it or not. I'm sure that he'll go ahead and apply, but he could just as easily wait and apply a year from now.

  7. hawk316 (anonymous) says…

That's disappointing, for sure. I was looking forward to seeing what Huldon could do this year. On the other hand, this gives him an extra year to get bigger and stronger. He has already established that he can play the position quite admirably. Best wishes, Huldon.

Great Article but I don't understand how any one reads the Star with all of the ridiculous comments from the users on there. Every article spurs idiotic onslaughts from all sides rarely to do with the topic of the article.

All our young defensive players better step up this season. This is a big blow to KU.

I can't wait to hear from all the people who complained about Mangino allegedly making players play "injured" to be on here complaining this year about why everyone is on the DL under Gill.

  10. areyouserious (anonymous) says…

Holy Cow! Did we the fans really just get an injury update? Never understood why Mangino had to be secretive about it.

    1. dagger108 (anonymous) replies

      rather refreshing - yes?

  11. mvjayhawk (anonymous) says…

Tharp was going to be a good one....and fine speed too. our front seven is going to be very unproven and inexperienced.....we're going to have to cause a lot of TOs, because i think we'll have a real hard time just shutting people down.

    1. DevilHawk (anonymous) replies

Forcing turnovers should be the goal on the defense anyway.

  12. jhawkrulz (anonymous) says…

This is the difference between KU and the top notch (elite) programs...that is depth.

OU loses a player and they have 3-4 ready to go. KU loses a player and we have to use a person from a different position to fill the gap.

All of you knocking Mangino, all I have to say is the past 8 years in KU football have been some of the best football in the past 50 years of KU football history (not to mention a BCS win). Let's hope that we don't rescind to the Terry Allen days, like last time we hired a MAC Head Coach.

I'm excited about the future, but can we really stop bringing up Mangino for the way he did things.

    1. sevenyearhawk (anonymous) replies

"Let's hope that we don't rescind to the Terry Allen days, like last time we hired a MAC Head Coach."

      This, a thousand times this!

      1. swishymcjayhawk (anonymous) replies

when was Northern Iowa in the MAC? last time i checked, Northern Iowa was in the Gateway Football Conference and is now the Missouri Valley Conference. Neither of which are the MAC.

also jhawkrulz should know what the word "rescind" means before using it.

        1. JBurtin (anonymous) replies

          +1 & +1 again

    2. dagger108 (anonymous) replies

Did the last MAC HC have any major college experience?
Had the last MAC HC, or any KU HC, have experience playing for a national championship?
How many Heisman finalist have we had in the KU FB program - playing or coaching?

It is amazingly silly that anyone who hasn't been living under a rock still makes these comparisons.

      PS
UNI is not in the MAC. They are FCS/1-AA; not even FBS/1-A

  13. kansasbasketball (anonymous) says…

this is a really big blow but if they want to run the ball like they say they(turner gill and offensive cor.) do we might be close to win some games

The big 12 blogger on espn is having a Kansas Mailbag. Time to ask your questions and get his opinion (not that is matters, he is a MU grad) but Kstate had the most fans ask questions. Lets show him we love our jayhawks and KU is worth covering when he mostly writes about UT, OU, and MU

Losing Tharp is tough but I am very curious to see how this offense is different than what we are used to and if the defensive line and backfield can control the passing game. I am fired up for the new regime under Coach Gill. Rock Chalk Jayhawk!!!!!!

  17. jaymar74 (anonymous) says…

Terry Allen was a division II coach with only division II experience. Turner Gill only has division I experience and a lot of it at a national title contender. There is no comparison between Allen and Gill. Plus all of Allen's staff was division II. Gill's staff is division I, again with national title contention experience. Let's stop the ignorant comments that we have another Allen.

  18. mikendal (KUFanSince1975) says…

Totally agree with you "jaymar74." I think our offense will be explosive at times because the Jayhawks have the weapons with a decent offensive line. Question is, "Will our offense score more points than what our defense gives up?" With the injury to Tharp (btw, correct me If I am wrong, he missed his entire Senior year at Mulvane High School with an ACL knee injury), that is a big blow. Tharp may think he has been "snake-bitten" with the new injury. I hope our defense is not worse off than last year. It has been well-documented that if KU had a half-way decent defense last year, they would have experienced a bowl game. I am crossing my fingers in regard to our defense. I think our offense will be exciting to watch. Can't wait for the games to begin--RCJH.

What kind of foot injury keeps you out 15 weeks? a broken foot might keep you out 5 or 6 weeks what kind of injury keeps you out 15 weeks?

    1. DevilHawk (anonymous) replies

According to the article, it was a "reaggravation of the same injury."

If you sustain an injury, it takes a certain amount of time for the injury to fully heal if you don't stress the injury. Often, you can be effective again before the injury fully heals, but that only complicates and delays the healing process. It also leads to the risk of reaggravating the injury - before the healing process is complete. It sounds like that is exactly what happened here.

As fans, we hate seeing injuries, but the players typically hate it even more. Players typically prefer to get back to the team before they really should - instead of letting their injury fully heal.

Also, the foot injury may mean that he can't do cardio exercises for a while, which would substantially impact his health and conditioning - in addition to the possibility of messing with his confidence, potentially even after the injury is fully healed.

  20. Maxhawk (anonymous) says…

If it were broken 6 weeks would be the maximum, what could take 15 weeks?

    1. KGphoto (anonymous) replies

      1. KGphoto (anonymous) replies

        I guess that's +2. But I really, really agree.

    3. DevilHawk (anonymous) replies

It might be a torn tendon or something similar related to the foot but not the foot-itself. No idea.

Of course, I'm also not entirely sure where you're getting 15 weeks from.

      1. Maxhawk (anonymous) replies

It's three weeks until the first game and the season lasts 12 weeks that's 15 weeks. I understand you might not want to waste a year of eligibility to only play in a couple of games but it does seem like a very long time

  21. hawk316 (anonymous) says…

I agree with those who have already pointed out that any comparison of Coach Gill with Terry Allen is unfounded. Terry Allen was known as a nice guy who failed to provide proper discipline with his players. Gill, on the other hand, combines the best of two traits: genuine care and concern for his players with necessary and reasonable discipline. Plus, the man inspires others to strive for greatness.

These kinds of coaches are few and far between. We are extremely blessed to now have one in Lawrence.

  22. inteldesign (anonymous) says…

Correction...we are blessed to have Two of such coaches in Lawrence. HCBS.
