Wouldn't have guessed Keegan to be an Allman fan. I like Tait's pick the best, though I think All Along the Watchtower is a better cover.

Off-the-wall question: What is your favorite cover song?

Dugan’s answer: Dumb question.

Dugan ~

Why is it a dumb question, because everyone should know what your favorite is, or because you can't think of an answer?

****

I am torn between two favorites:

Foo Fighters covering Gerry Rafferty's "Baker Street"

John Mellencamp covering The Drifters' "Under the Boardwalk"

Some good choices tribe. Also, The Foo's cover of Baker Street is amazing!! I would throw these in there too.

Catfish Blues: The Black Crowes

Ain't no more cane on the brazos or The Weight: The Black Crowes

The entire album "Me and Mr. Johnson": Eric Clapton

Communication Breakdown: Wolfmother

Led Zeppelin II: Rose hill Drive (A band out of Colorado, they're amazing but not too well known. check them out. They played a show at Red Rocks where the first set was the entire album LZII then played their entire album straight through. They released it as a live CD)

Little Wing: SRV

Nice tip on the band covering Led Zeppelin. The "Encomium" CD is pretty cool too.

Another good covers CD: Tommy Shaw / Jack Blades - "Influence"

The OU-KU game will not be high scoring. If we score 25 or more points and don't turn the ball over, we will win.

I appreciate the Encomium suggestion, but aside from STP, Plant/Amos and Blind Melon, that album is weak in my opinion. I just don't think i can get behind Hootie, Big head Todd, 4 non blondes and Cracker playing LZ. =/ Just my opinion though. =)

Metallica: Turn the Page. Absolutely awesome. 100x better than the original. I so totally agree.

I think we're gonna squeak by OU this afternoon on one or two big plays and the media will call it a fluke.

I can see what you mean regarding a couple of the covers on “Encomium” - - Sheryl Crow is so-so, and Helmet with David Yow is barely listenable. They should have got another cool band from that era for at least one of those songs (e.g. Paw or Gruntruck).

I really want to hear the plant/amos version of down by the seaside - one of my favorite LZ songs and albums, especially side 2. Plant has been great with Alison Kraus, so I'm curious to hear that song in another light.

Disagree that Metallica rocks turn the page better than Seger. Metallica is overrated, and a bunch of douche bags. I'll never forget about the napster incident let alone the mangled pile of crap that was Load/reLoad. They lost me as a fan after their music turned crap, and their selfishness took over.

It is difficult to pick a favorite Led Zeppelin album, but Physical Graffiti is certainly at or near the top.

Dinosaur Jr. covering Peter Frampton's "Show Me the Way"
Zoom (anyone remember them?) covering Gary Newman's "Cars"
Supersuckers covering Outkast's "Hey Ya!", which is arguably the song of this decade, whatever this decade is going to become to known...

I like a lot of the above listed cover tunes, namely Hendrix's cover of All Along the Watch Tower. awesome! Also, being a product of the 80s I can't forget Guns N Roses. They did 2 good covers, IMO. Dylan's Knockin' On Heavens Door and PMcCartney + Wings Live and Let Die.

jwliddell - I disagree that Metallica was overrated, but I do agree that Lars was a douchebag re: Napster. For that matter, the biggest douchebag of them all has to be Axl Rose.

Wasn't Paw an awesome band? Too bad things didn't work out better for them - - three CD's wasn't enough.

Another great cover is Smashing Pumpkins' version of "Landslide." Man, we could go on with these for a while! :^)

Paw was definitely a good band and there were other good local bands from that era too. Kill Creek, That Statue Moved, Milhouse Nixons, Stick, Jeff and Jeff, etc. Great memories of hanging out at the Jazzhaus, Benchwarmers, and The Bottleneck. Wonder if any of those places are even still around?

Nice call! Don't forget the Homestead Grays either :) I am pretty sure the Jazzhaus and the Bottleneck are still open.

Man, I remember when Soundgarden played at the latter.

Now that the game is over, considering how we played, I may have to pay a visit to Pink Floyd's "The Wall" or Queensryche's "Operation: Mindcrime" tonight :-/
