— Kansas freshman center Jeff Withey will miss four to six weeks of practice after suffering a stress fracture in his right knee earlier this week in practice, KU coach Bill Self said at Thursday's Big 12 media day at the Sprint Center.

"He slightly fractured it two days ago," Self said. "It's something with his kneecap or his tibia. It's not a major injury, but it's one that's nagging. He'll be back in a little bit, by Dec. 1 is what they tell me."

Withey, a 7-foot transfer from Arizona, will not be eligible to play in games until the conclusion of first semester in mid-December.

I feel bad for Jeff, but at least it happened to a player that can't play first semester.

suttonku 5 years ago

yeah in terms of playing in games this is not a big deal but in terms of getting better this is a big blow to Jeff Withey...But from what I saw at Late Night the kid can play for sure...Although Jeff is a bit of a finesse player, he uses his size very well. Cole is the one that needs to be a lot stronger so he can be more effective around the rim.

Jennifer Nikkila Pressgrove 5 years ago

They worked hard to put some weight on Withey this summer. I wonder if his knees are having a hard time supporting that weight. Granted I'm not a doctor or a physical therapist. Just a layman's thought.

Joel Hood 5 years ago

I assume that his knee injury won't affect his ability to work on upper body strength training during the next 6 weeks? This is definately a loss to the other bigs during practice though.

Joe Baker 5 years ago

What? Well maybe he'll be ready by December!!!

Hope he takes it easy and doesn't reinjure anything.

Crap- Dang injuries!

This guy has Chenowith written all over him.

Jonathan Andrews 5 years ago

Get well soon, Withey. Keep working hard without re-injuring anything.

oldalum 5 years ago

I read that Self said it was a crack (I assume in the knee cap), so my theory was that he banged knees with someone. Total speculation.

kccalvin 5 years ago

Aldrich had chenowith written all over him at first too. Self and Manning did their job and look at Aldrich now. Jeff will be a great player by the end.

Gene Jackson 5 years ago

Could someone please clarify how "Withey" is pronounced? Is it "Wit-hey", or "With-ee"? Haven't heard it yet here in Colorado.

Watch the big man move, shoot and put the ball on the wood!! He moves better and more coordinated than any big man i've ever seen. Remember he's 7'

His NBA role model on the court is KG...Watch out B12 and the entire b-ball nation. This kid is the real deal.

Aldrich, WIthey and TRob will own the paint. No squatters allowed! LOL

They will clean the boards better than any big trio.

I would like to see this line up: SC X TRob WIthey Aldrich

I'm sure I will at some point during many games!

suttonku 5 years ago

I dont think we will ever have Withey and Aldrich on the court at the same time unless we have serious foul trouble with our forwards...It is interesting but I dont see it.

Withey does not have Chenowith written all over him...Withey is way more athletic and Withey was a top 50 guy I think out of his recruiting class. Withey will be great for KU next season when he is the man. Can you imagine, we will have Withey and Robinson next season with the Morris twins potentially.

Are you talking about the Chenowith who is,3rd in career blocks,5th in career rebounds,25th in career points,18th career in mins. played,14th career ft's,6th games played,19th games started,40th career steals,42th career assists, shot 49% from the field,72.3% from the line.I guess thats a bad thing for some guys.I wasn't even good enough to play DI ball let alone put my name in the record book in most every category at K.U. I hope Jeff heals and makes a huge impact,I think he has the tools.

truehawk93,

Thanks for the video links. Withey makes some of those "men" look like little boys on the court. It would be so cool to see Cole and him playing keep-away under the basket. I doubt they'll be on the court together, but it would be fun.

He also has a great touch. Hey, guys, Chenowith....I hardly think so.

100 5 years ago

They absolutely will be on the court together at some point this season -- Withey is naturally a 4, Cole is quite obviously a 5.

Don't let the fact that both are 7 feet get in the way of simple reasoning skills, especially when we have Bill Self, the interchangeable parts king of the world.

Now many of you are right -- Withey is being trained to fill in at the 5 & possibly start at the 5 next year (2010-2011). But his best position this year is still at the 4 & frankly if he makes the league someday this will be his position there as well -- he has great touch, incredible height & athleticism & is certainly not a Shaq Type.

As for now, it's knee pad time for the remainder of his KU career -- the thing I like about this injury is its a quick heal and he can remain active throughout -- as long as he's not banging around, he can work, shoot & run like everyone else.

With his athleticism there is no way in the world Self wouldn't put these two out there together, regardless of their height (which by the way is a good thing).

So, gentlemen, without further ado, here is your 2010 (40-0) National Champion Starting Lineup:

(for championship game mind you, not all season)
  1. Sherron Collins
  2. Tyshawn Tayler
  3. X Henry
  4. Jeff Withey
  5. Cole Aldrich

                                It's block/ rebound/ auto-dunk time.

B - Mainly just felt like writing the word Chenowith...nothing much else, really don't know much about Withey. But the Big E is always a nice conversation starter!!!

100 5 years ago

As for Chenowith comparison, are you kidding me!!!!???

Look at the film (someone posted more good stuff above).

The kid is awesome!

Anyone starting Chenowith cr-p like that is obviously a Duke, UNC, UK, Arizona or UCLA internet troll.

The kid is good -- really good. I'm not sure why it's taken even the KU fanbase so long to realize this, but I'm glad we finally have come full circle on our players. He has a lot of 4/5 skills to go in that 7'0" frame. He's a real good passer to boot -- which is definitely a skill for the NBA, but will also really benefit us with Cole slicing around a backpick set high in the lane.

We must keep in mind he's only a "freshman", but a 2nd year, practically a sophomore -- a lot of the tape out there is from a year or two ago.

We need to come to terms with this fact: We are stocked. I'd take Jeff Withey any day of the week over a guy like John Wall (worse yet for Kentucky by the way, it's looking indeed like they made a hiring mistake again if the John Wall SAT rumors are confirmed by the NCAA -- apparently John Wall took one test in Carolina and got a 700, which sounds about right. His second he took at a different testing center, not sure which one, but boy it better not be in Detroit or he's really busted himself -- the second test he "raised" it to 1300).

Essentially if this report is true -- then what he "did" on the SAT is impossible. It's like in six months going from a 6 year old who just started reading to a B student in college who is writing well thought out 5 page papers. Thank goodness we don't have John Wall.

As for our Arizona transfer?

He takes tests for himself.

Jeff Withey Rocks the Chalk.

KUbsee69 5 years ago

HCBS has said he wants to get to a 9, or even 8 man rotation as the season progresses. He said 4 bigs and 5 guards. He also said the 8 man rotation might happen because Marcus M may be able to play both big and guard roles.

It looks to me like we have at least one excess big man. Could that be Withey? Cole, Markieff, Marcus, & Thomas can make the four bigs for the 9 man unit and will all have first semester experience and bonding. Will this injury work him out of the rotation this season? Maybe a red-shirt for building the future?

kcgregory 5 years ago

I like Withey too. He could be good for us.

But, this is absolutely ludicrous and is only jealousy talking: "I'd take Jeff Withey any day of the week over a guy like John Wall".

I love how some of our KU faithful just assume everyone else is cheating. UK is a tradition rich program with a great recruiter at the helm. They're going to get some of the kids we're after. It's ok. And it doesn't make the kids cheaters or not talented if they choose UK over KU.

Liekness,

Again with the Chenowith Bashing? Really?

If Whithey can finish his career as the

2nd all time leader in KU history in blocked shots (Collison has since beat him by 1) 4th all time in rebounds ( 5th now) 20th all time in scoring ( 27 now)

All the while playing with the likes of Gooden, Hinrich, Collison (as Chenowith did) I would call that a success. And if that means having Chenowith written all over him, then I would gladly take it

I do get a kick out of your posts but for everyone else's reference, 100 has truly maintained, since the day we signed Jeff, that someday he and Condor would be on the floor together. He has taken great abuse and kidding on this subject but his sheer determination has been admirable.

My only point is that if you have Mr. Robinson on the floor with Condor then with Withey, you'll have two great front court combinations not just one!!!

PS Is this ad for the ALLSTARS Cabaret and Sports Bar about a strip club?? If so, what the heck is it doing on the KU Basketball site? Geez, how low class!!!

I get tired of people ragging on Chenowith...

I think he came in and gave it his best.

I really don't understand why some people thought he should have been so much better than he was, and he was pretty good, good enough to play in the NBA for over a decade...

Yes he was rated very highly out of high school, but that and $2 will get you a cup of coffee. As bbobball noted above, his college numbers are very good.

I guess some people expected him to be the next Danny Manning. Sorry to all you putzses. He's Eric Chenowith, he's a Jayhawk, so why not try to appreciate him. Without him, the teams he was on probably would not have been as good. As his statistics indicate, he did quite a lot, way more than the fair-weather KU fans who are always knocking him down and then backing the bus over him.

Not every Jayhawk can be a Danny Manning or the Big Dipper, try to appreciate the fact they gave enough to put on a Kansas uniform. Hey, in case you've missed it, KU has been very good because of all of those players. Instead of knocking them, try being a supportive fan!

kcgregory 5 years ago

I think it's a case of expectations with chenowith. He came in highly rated. Had a pretty good freshman year. had a great sophomore year. He then never got better and it could argured he regressed. High expectations that got higher, then he didn't deliver on those. Couldn't even see the floor in meaningful minutes in the tourney as a senior--and Roy loved to play his seniors. I have no ill will towards him like some, but i was in school at the time and this was not the prevailing opinion "I think he came in and gave it his best." And contrary to the rest of your post, he never to my knowledge played in more than a handful of NBA games (if any) so this is misleading at best: "good enough to play in the NBA for over a decade..."

kcgregory 5 years ago

here's chenowith's pro career:

Chenowith has played professionally for the Greenville Groove and Huntsville Flight (2001/02, NBDL), Pau-Orthez (2002, LNB, France), Huntsville Flight and Roanoke Dazzle (2002/03, NBDL), Orange County Crush (ABA) and Fujian Xunxing (China) (2004/05), Idaho Stampede (CBA) and Cangrejeros de Santurce (Puerto-Rico) (2005/06), Idaho Stampede (NBDL) and Criollos de Caguas (Puerto-Rico) (2006/07).

Good observation, tho I question the extrapolations. Marcus' abilities make him a BRush type player, essentially the same as Little - able to fill in at the 4 if we go small.

The bigs this year are Withey, Cole, Markieff, & Robinson. The question is who is Cole v1.0, the big who can fill in when fouls dictate?

A(nother) red-shirt for Withey would not be possible (except medical, which wouldn't seem possible with a 4-6 week preseason injury) since he already sat out a year.

The big (log jam) question is who will be the 5 guards? Sherron and 4 of the others X, Marcus, Little, Travis, Conner TT, CJ, Tyrel, EJ, Brady

Coach definitely has options, and broccoli has more calcium than milk :-)

I disagree on Marcus, dagger. He may see some time at the 3, but I doubt it. Self always talked about Wright being a 3 too, but he never moved off the 4. I think with the injury to Withey he'll likely see very little time so the 'bigs' are Cole, Mk, Mc, and TRob.

Smalls are anyone's guess. It appears that Elijah would be the odd man out to me, but he's so talented that seems silly.

Best guess if you're only giving me five: Sherron, Reed, Tyshawn, Henry, Henry with Morningstar mixing in for/with Reed when he gets back.

Little would be next I think. I know that leaves Releford and Elijah out, but that's my current guess.

Should be fun to find out.

Liekness, I know. But I had to pin it on someone.

As far as Cheneowith expectations, Yes they were high. But when you have players come in like Gooden, Collison and Hinrich, someone had to take a lesser role and I think he did that and still did all that coach Williams asked him to do.

Mahatma - you are wise beyond your years.

kcgregory says... I disagree on Marcus, dagger.

I can see your point, and definitely appreciate the Wright perspective - good knowledge. Julian's challenge was the presence of BRush, and less (?) competition at the 4. It remains to be seen if Marcus faces the same.

I would add though that maybe Coach learned from the JW experience - not acheiving as much as having bigs play big. It would seem noteworthy that Marcus is practicing with the G's.

I would definitely agree with you that he is likely to see more 4 time until at least mid-December.

b_hux 5 years ago

TexasHawk44 -- is that you Eric?

As for any comparisons with Withey, it remains to be seen, but all indications are he's a pretty athletic 7-footer. That being said, I think he'll take whatever minutes Cole doesn't if he gets healthy enough. I see Thomas, the twins and Cole taking up the majority of the big minutes. Jeff may grow into a larger role than I expect, but I think we should all temper our expectations until we get a chance to see him in action.

Chenowith was just frustrating because he didn't seem to get much better after his freshman year. No question he had an impact on the program, just not as big as many of us would have thought.

I hope Jeff does really well, but I'm not expecting too much to start with!

bbobball 5 years ago

Chenowith averaged 5.9 pts.,4.9 boards, and had 13 steals his Freshman year.In his Sophomore year he averaged 13.5 pts. and 9.1 rebounds a game and had 26 steals.Eric's Sophomore year was his best, coming within .9 rbs.of averaging a double/ double on the year.I think that this improvement is what led to the high expectations that never came.He was Honorable mention all American,2nd team all Big XII,and Big XII all defense team, with 11 double doubles that year.

100 5 years ago

Kcgregory,

That discussion on Wall has been speculated about for quite sometime by all fans across America. Now somebody on an Sports Illustrated board put out two SAT numbers & this is exactly how the Rose & Dozier thing went down.

I saw another KU fan brought it up the other day. Since it is still a rumor, it's fair game to discuss.

Let's face it, if this is true (700 to 1300) then every interview we saw with John Wall told us everything we needed to know about him as did his break in.

Yes we've all made mistakes but all I'm saying is if this is proven true, that Kentucky AD & President will regret going for stolen fools gold instead of hiring their own.

Now, on one point, everything you said is true -- Kentucky does have a great heritage & Calipari has shown he can recruit incredible talent like Rose, Dozier, Camby, Evans & Wall to name a few.

However with freedom comes responsibility so let's not be naive about this -- Calipari knows without a stellar point guard he has nothing. It's always his key ingredient, whether or not they've graduated high school.

We as Jayhawks can continue to root for Kentucky -- no problem there. But did you mention jealousy?

There's a huge difference between jealousy, reporting a rumor going around, & calling a spade a spade: we all know the rumor is going around, we all know what Calipari has done before... So the question is:

Did he do it again?

Jealousy has nothing to do with it.

I want the truth.

I love that this digressed into a discussion about Chenowith. I too was at KU with him and knew him...there's a reason he was mostly called "Chenoworthless".

At the time it's fairly cool to go following DMB or Phish or whatever for a summer, but don't come back thinking you are the shiz both on and off the court after not doing a damn thing for a summer. I don't care what his stats were...if you were there at the time, you know what those stats mean.

Here's to hoping that Withey is dedicated and with a stroke of luck, healthy for a while.
