KU-Texas set for 7 p.m. kickoff

The Kansas University football team's road game against No. 3 Texas next Saturday has been slated for a 7 p.m. kickoff and will be part of a split national feed along with the Oregon-Arizona game, the Big 12 Conference announced Sunday.

The game will be broadcast on ABC, which will also air the Jayhawks' Nov. 28 Border War matchup with Missouri.

In all, Kansas (5-5, 1-5 in the Big 12) will have appeared on ABC in five of the final six weeks of the season.

i agree jeff. If we can get motivated, and that is a big if, we can shock the world. we have the talent but have just not been able to put it all together for 60 mins. It is too bad that overall our fan base just hasn't yet learned how to support a football team. This was obvious from the start of the season when the students would leave at halftime.

There is still plenty to be excited about:
A: upset of the year against texas.
B: destroying misery, the priverlage of which is god's greatest gift to man.
C: completing the above two and making a bowl game.

If anybody thinks Texas doesn't beat the Hawks by a tleast 3 TD's then they are the biggest blue kool-aid drinking KU homers ever. I admire your optimism. No this team does not have the talent. One player on the KU D might play for Texas but it would probably be on special teams. It is a shame this game is in that primetime slot it can't be good for the program to continually get manhandled on network TV

I think our game will resemble the Texas Baylor game from yesterday. Texas will get up big then ease up a little and maybe let us get on the board. It will be a blowout, no question. I'll be there, however, making as much noise for the hawks as possible.

jwliddell (anonymous) says...

Umm, disagree Fruity. I'm a HUGE UT fan as well as a KU fan. This game is tough for me because I want my hawks to go to a bowl, but I want UT to take the title they have rightfully earned a shot at so far. With that said. Laptad, Briscoe, Lubbock Smith, Onyebule, Meier, Stuckey all could play for Texas. easily. Mack Brown will be the first to tell you that. You know what the difference would be? BCS refs and coaching. You could put this entire Kansas team in burnt orange and have them play in Austin, and I promise you they would be undefeated right now, and be considered great.

I was just having this conversation with my brother last night, a UT grad. His assessment of the KU team. Probably some of the best talent that has come through lawrence, a team he compares to his longhorns. My brother also seems to think that the only reason Kstate is sitting atop of the North is that the BCS refs wanted the North to beat each other up, leaving the clear path for the south favorites. He admitted that it sucked, but he also couldn't complain. He's stoked for another NC for the longhorns. As am I, but I've never loved a team more than these Jayhawks. They have done amazing things for KU football, and I'll never regret the decision to go to KU over UT. Coming from someone that has followed both teams exclusively for 15 years now, these kids do have the talent. Ask Frank Beamer.

KU us very dangerous this weekend because there is nothing to lose we haven't already lost, but I would love to destroy Texas' weekend even though it would hurt the Big 12.

jwliddell-

Where do I even start with in your post? None of those players could play for Texas...in fact that's why they play for KU, just like most of our players (about half come from TX) who Texas didn't want.

We don't have the talent to compete with the big boys, '07 was a fluke precipitated by a weak schedule and an novel offense that everyone we play has now figured out how to stop.

BCS refs? Seriously? There's no conspiracy, we just suck.

This team is nowhere near where Texas is, and changing the uniforms wouldn't matter for a team that lost to Colorado and K-State. By the way, we should have lost to ISU too.

KU will be humiliated on national TV in prime-time Saturday. Mark it down, it will probably be similar to the last time we played down there. We will probably lose to Mizzou too.

I admire your undying optimism and (blind) loyalty, but come on, let's be serious here. This team is no good.

I love jwliddell's optimism and I SO agree about the refs. If you don't see this, then maybe you could get a job as a ref right here in the Big 12 :) Sorry, but seriously, they've been horrible! I'm a realist but also a HUGE KU fan and I always believe we can pull off an upset. If you don't even think it's possible, then why play the game? Good grief, the mild kitties beat UT twice and weren't good teams at all... it happens... Rock Chalk!!!!

November 15, 2009 at 8:04 p.m. ( | suggest removal )

jkilgore (anonymous) says...

No, babyjay1, I don't love unfounded optimism. Our Jayhawks aren't "no good" as Hays says, but we're very mediocre. I've been to every home game with the exception of OU, and our defense has been only fair to poor at stopping the opposition. Are you aware of how bad NU had struggled before Saturday? That has nothing to do with officiating. I'll be the first to cheer for the Hawks, but blind loyalty isn't loyalty--it's blindness for the sake of denial.

Even with next year's numblingly easier schedule, I'm not sure whether we'll even have a winning record then? A W versus Texas? No chance. A win versus MU? Don't put any money on that game that you can't afford to lose. It hurts to say this, but it's true.

HawkfromHays,

You think Mack Brown would pass on Briscoe now? You don't think Briscoe lining up on the other side of Shipley would be a deadly combination? You think that all players from Texas that come to KU were never, ever considered by UT? You're a moron. There is one player from Texas that wasn't at least looked at, and that was Todd Reesing.

You all act like we got stomped every game this year. Every game was very close, and winnable.

Even if your assessment is right, that KU is pure crap. Crappy teams beat good teams all the time. And as I said, this game is a win/win for me. If UT wins, I'll be happy, if KU wins, I'll be happy. You can't suggest I'm blinded by the crimson and blue. I'm being real. Obviously you don't watch much KU sports at all, or UT sports for that matter. I was there when UT barely beat USC. A team that was unbeatable, with two Heisman winners for the title on Vince Young's shoulders.

If you think there is any game, any game, that KU, or anyone for that matter, can't win, then you don't deserve to celebrate the 1988 NCAA championship. That 1988 team shouldn't have won the tournament ... they barely deserved to be in it.

I'm just curious how the seniors managed to crush every significant record? Pure luck? Why do you think the 20 wins in two years is the lucky part, and the 5-5 this year is the reality? I think it's the complete opposite. I think they are a 10 wins a year team that got unlucky. You can see the talent. You've been watching it for the last 2.5 years, haven't you?

You are pathetic, HawkfromHays - not a real fan at all. Just a grumpy old turd, living a sad life in a sad town.

lighthawk,

Certainly talent-wise we are not the worst, but what has that gotten us? We will likely finish 1-7. Baylor has a realistic shot to beat A&M, which would make them 2-6. Even if they don't they will have a better quality conference win than us (at Mizzou), and will have beaten a common opponent. And yes, you are right, we deserved to be 0-8, and were about 2 feet away from being so. This year = slow-motion train wreck that unfolded over 8 weeks.

To those of you who think we "optimists" are blinded by the crimson & blue, you're wrong. Has it ever occured to you that maybe we just like to keep believing. I'm not an idiot - I've seen every game - in fact, I may take a bet that I've watched more college football over the last several years than many of you. No, I'm not the smartest fan; there's a lot I miss that others see during the game. However, we aren't a horrible team. We're a team that has not lived up to potential, has had some coaching that was questionable, some refs that stunk it up and some young players that have more to learn. However, I will not be the one to criticize every play - I yell with the best of them when someone does something completely moronic but I also see the effort and heart in all the players. So, call me a moron or call it "unfounded optimism" and I'll gladly take it! I was also an optimist about Coach Self, even after he lost the 1st round game in the NCAA Tourn 2 years in a row. People were probably calling me a moron then, too but not so much now.... Rock Chalk!!!!

I never said we were a bad team the last 3 years. In '07 we were a fairly good team that had a favorable schedule, in '08 we were a mediocre team, and this year we are a bad team.

And why would you want to watch a ND game this year? That might be a larger train wreck than KU! You say you like all types of football... So, I would guess you've taken in games at Eastern Michigan, Washington State, and Western Kentucky this year? Just trying to make you laugh...

Looks like my post started quite a debate. jwliddel, I said one player on the KU Defense would see the field for Texas. Briscoe and Meier probably would look good in burnt orange. Laptad and Onyebule huh, I'm sure Mack Brown would trade his two starting D-ends for them right now. I think Onyebule might still be running after the Nebraska RB who doesn't have the ball while the QB rolls out on the bootleg. You say you are a Texas fan but you must not be a very knowledgeable one if you can't see the gigantic disparity in talent between the 2 defenses

jwliddell (anonymous) says...

haha, good stuff kuwells. I've got my Western Kentucky season tickets for next year =P

Fruity22,

Obviously UT has a better defense, but as far as a huge talent gap, no I don't see that. We have some pieces that UT would love to have, and vice versa. The biggest part of that UT D is Will Muschamp, who I believe is the best of the best D coordinators. No shock that he will be taking over for MBrown after his tenure.

There is a talent gap, and UT is better, but what makes them way better is DCWM. I don't think the disparity is as much as you think in talent, though. The fact is, KU does have the talent, we just couldn't put everything else together this year. We lacked the balance you need to be a good team, which does rest on the shoulders of the coaches. The lack of balance is overplaying the Tech pass game when they decide to start running the ball in the fourth. Not running sharp/Oporum combinations and more often. Looking back, you can see the mistakes that were made, and how they can easily be corrected to make this ball club a great team. It's sad it's too late to do much, but our program has been lifted because of our seniors, and the future looks bright.

So my point is, IF, and it's a big IF ... IF KU can put together a full game, it's a close match with UT. I guarantee you that DCWM and HCMB aren't looking past us. The Meier/Briscoe scheme is already in place I'm sure.

"We have the tools, we have the talent"

-Winston Zedmore

Oh, and as far as the balance thing goes, throw that out the window with UT. Overplay Shipley. Stop him, and you stop UT. McCoy is great, but Shipley is the playmaker on that team.

November 16, 2009 at 10:36 a.m. ( | suggest removal )

Fruity22 (anonymous) says...

Sorry, I still believe there is a huge talent gap. No doubt there D coordinator is better, you look like like a lot better coach when you're coaching the best players out of Texas. Is there a player on that KU D that would start for Texas besides maybe Stuckey? How many players on the Texas D get drafted, and how many get drafted from KU? I think the correct answers to those questions lead you to the answer of yes there is indeed a huge talent gap.

So all we have to do is overplay Shipley to stop Texas, sure. You don't even have to pass the ball to move it on KU. They can kill us all day with McCoy running bootlegs and draws. This team hasn't stopped a draw all year. Everybody has ran the ball on us. The Nebraska QB has been horrendous all year and he looked all-conference against KU.

And by the way being balanced on defense is a product of talent. When you have to overplay the pass that is because your secondary is bad. When you have to overplay the run that is because your front 7 is bad.

November 16, 2009 at 11:28 a.m. ( | suggest removal )

HawkfromHays (anonymous) says...

Fruity, you are right. UT is basically the Texas State high school all-star team. UT's second team could start for KU, and have a ton more talent than KU. While the group has improved steadily this year, and didn't play a bad game against Neb. for 3.5 quarters, no one from KU's defense could start for UT.

November 16, 2009 at 11:40 a.m. ( | suggest removal )

jwliddell (anonymous) says...

Looks like we are all over the spectrum. Fruity is in the middle ground, Hays on the lower tier, and I'm still capt optimistic.

Fruity, first off i was being a little facetious about overplaying Shipley. I just wanted to point out what a dynamic ball player he is. Balance is still the key to beating UT, et al., and I still think we have the talent to do so.

Do you not think that talent can easily be wasted talent under a poor DC? There have been years that OU has beat out UT on recruiting Texas talent, and yet, halfway through the season, UT gels and becomes dynamite on the D. Sure, anyway can throw the top 11 athletes in the country on one side of the ball and let' em run wild, but without someone guiding them through the motions and schemes, they aren't going to be a good defense.

I can promise you that if we had DCWM on our bench, you would see a world of difference in our Defense.

NU's D is better than UT's, and we handled them just fine. In fact, until late in the 4th, our D looked better. Our defense has been the better unit this year overall.

Like I said, yes we are less talented, but the margin IMO is a lot thinner than you think. I'm not saying the gap is not significant, it's just not head and shoulders.

HawksfromHays, way off ... at the very least, Stuckey starts for UT on D, hands down.

November 16, 2009 at 1:24 p.m. ( | suggest removal )

Fruity22 (anonymous) says...

So now you are saying there is a significant gap in talent, just not head and shoulders. You know in some circles significant and head and shoulders mean the same thing. In one of your earlier posts you said you don't see a huge talent gap so it is getting difficult for me to follow you with you changing your opinion on the fly.

So balance on D is now the way to beat Texas instead of overplaying Shipley like you stated earlier. Once again you are all over the place. Debateable if NU's D is better than Texas. "Handled them just fine" eehh our O-line had about there best game of the year and we scored 17 points. "Our D looked better until late in the 4th" Guess when it matters most bucko, late in the 4th. Check some past scores from Nebraska's big 12 games and see how many times they scored 31 points

I would not be disappointed in the least if we spoiled TU's bid for a national title but the chance of that happening are only slightly better than me winning the lottery. My hope is we leave Texas with enough self esteem to play Missouri the following week. A win against the Tigers would be a nice consolation for what has been a disappointing season.

As far as the disparity in talent goes, this is the primary difference between the haves and have nots. I don't believe Mack Brown or Bob Stoops are better coaches than Mangino. Texas and Oklahoma get the pick of the litter, we get the leftovers that other schools scavenge through. I wish I was articulate enough to say that in a way that is not so demeaning to our players because I really love the players we have. But Mangino has to develop talent with what is given to him and I think he deserves a lot of credit for what he has done. Every time we sign a recruit, look at the other schools we competed against. It's usually Iowa State, Baylor, etc., never Texas or Oklahoma.

Stuckey has become a star on our team, but probably wouldn't have been given the playing time at UT, especially early in his career, to raise his stock as much as he has here. Stuckey may be a borderline starter on UT's team, but certainly no one else on our entire team save Briscoe would start for them. Again, that's why they play for KU and not UT.

The gap in talent has been shortened in recent years but is still tremendous, which will be obvious Sat. night if Texas even shows up for half of the game.

We saw this against Oklahoma. Even though they are down this year, they clearly out-manned us when we played them. The D fought hard the first half, but in the end, their personnel just wore us down (see their first 3 drives of the second half). When we had the ball, we just couldn't get much going especially after their halftime adjustments.

Worst case: a game similar to KU at UT in 05

Mizzou:

Worst case: a repeat of the Mizzou performance vs. KSU last weekend

Best case scenario is we lose to MU?? Yea, that sounds like a KU fan...

November 17, 2009 at 12:49 a.m. ( | suggest removal )

jgh (anonymous) says...

Best case scenario vs MU results in a loss? You've got to be kidding. We're talking about a team which was embarrassed at home by Baylor two weeks ago. Nothing that they've done is intimidating. What they accomplished at CU/KSU is what KU should have/would have if they'd taken care of the ball in either situation. The final margin of a game involving KSU is meaningless--if that team is forced to play from behind, stick a fork in them.

No, this is not a bad team, and certainly not the worst of the B12. Quit letting your emotions get the best of you, like an angry child. This is a team that has fallen victim to a nasty combination of injuries to key members, poor coaching decisions, a rough schedule and misfortune. I know that you wanted a fairy tale ending for Reesing and Meier, but it wasn't meant to be. However...

No one was complaining after Reesing laced a perfect pass between Meier's fingertips in the final seconds in Arrowhead last year, or after he led us to a lopsided bowl victory. The 62-21 and 35-7 home debacles were long forgotten at that point and the year was considered a success.

Well, my friends....7-6 is not only very possible, but it's probable. Missouri in Arrowhead, as was the case last season, is our chance for redemption. And whereas last year's KU team was (deservingly) an underdog in that match-up, this year's squad is simply as good or better than Missouri. Combine a senior class desperate to salvage and prolong a season with the lack of motivating factors on Missouri's side, and you have a repeat of last year's result. After that, it will be out of our hands. But if 6-6 KU is sitting next to 6-6 ISU and 6-6 A&M (as it will likely play out), KU will be bowling.

And, as the fantastic fan above has argued, we can't rule out 8-5 (matching last season).

Texas has vulnerabilities which are waiting to be exposed. It may as well be us, with our backs against the wall and nothing to lose, rather than Florida in a lopsided NC game. They are not a dominant offensive team and have quite simply relied upon winning the turnover battle all year. If KU is able to force McCoy into a couple miscues and finds themselves +2 or +3 in takeaways, are you going to count them out? Do you remember all the Reesing to Briscoe/Meier connections of recent years? Yes, there is a difference in overall talent, but certainly not severe enough to pencil in a W. As someone pointed out, a bad K-State team recently beat Texas twice in a row, and even pummeled them on their home field.

Moral: Don't give up on Reesing/Meier and co. just yet. There may be a little magic left in the tank.

Take the crimson and blue colored glasses off. We are 1-5 in conference, and are a decent throw from Arnaud away from being 0-6. We have regressed almost every week since Duke.

Injuries have not played much of a role either. Todd was well enough to scramble during the CU game and every game since then, and they have been calling QB draws every game as well. This would not happen if he were injured to any significant degree. Jake has just been ineffective. I don't know if he would have been productive had he been healthy the whole time because we have struggled to run the ball anyway.

If anyone is being emotional it's someone who thinks we have a shot to beat UT this week. Granted, because it's a rivalry game, we will probably hang with MU and have a shot to beat them, but we have all seen how those games have turned out this year. Their defense is very quick, and KSU was not playing from behind to the point that they needed to change their gameplan until the fourth quarter. If MU plays as well as they did against KSU we may be in trouble.

At this point what we could have been or should have been is meaningless. We are 1-5, and without a quality conference win. These are the facts, anyone looking at them and saying that we are still a good team or that it's likely that we will beat MU based on our performance thus far is simply not being objective.

Objective or not, anyone who makes the statement "best case scenario, KU loses to MU" is NOT a KU fan at all. An Arnaud pass away from being 0-6? Obviously, we could've lost the ISU game, I know that, I was there. We also could've won the Kstate, Ttech and CU game ... I was also at those games. It's a game of inches... struggles aside, we came very close in every game we've played this season. You've seen the magic this team can make happen. And speaking of a litmus test for the MU v KU match up, I look to one common opponent, NU. We were very close to beating NU, but even in our loss, we did not choke like MU choked at home. If that is what you meant by performance based predictions, I like my chances with KU at Arrowhead against your tigers.

KU football fans didn't support the team when we are 5-0, so I don't know why I would expect them to be now. So, you're correct, just another lame season for the KU football "faithful"

You gotta appreciate your theme of quit while the quitting is good ... probably why you're still in hays.

And as I said in my last post, NEVER will I concede defeat to MU until the final seconds have run off the clock, and they have more points, especially not with a team as inept as the current one in Columbia. They could be the best team in the country, or the worst, it doesn't matter, it never has, never will. If history is what your basing your KU-MU prediction on, history proves it doesn't matter what the teams have done up until that game.

No one has done a better jop at recruiting at Kansas than Mark Mangino. We have actually entered a new era for KU... expecting to win!

Kansas does not have the football atmosphere like the rest of the Big XII to help draw in the obvious top prospects. Instead, we have to rely on recruiting someone that has been overlooked or rejected by a big name football school in the Big XII or elsewhere. I live in Lincoln, NE... and everyone knows that Memorial Staduim at Kansas is the by far the least intimidating atmosphere in the Big XII. In this day and age, you Can Not have a running track between the playing field and the fans!!! There has been some decent improvement made to the facilities... but the actual stadium is absolutely not what it needs to be to compete in the rest of the college football world. Has anyone on this page been to a Nebraska football game??? ... not even a comparison. Kansas staduim is like a large high school staduim compared to NU, thus the recruiting situation will never reach the apex we all want it to.

The way I see it, it has been a miracle to get this far in recruiting the talent we have today, with the facilities we have. If you think a new coach is the answer... you are wrong. The lack of atmosphere is limiting the success of the football program.

They're not being compensated for their play. If we put too much pressure and too high of expectations on their backs, that's our fault.

No, actually I did address, your question about the 1988 team, go back and look, though I'm not sure what that has to do with the 2009 football team.

I'm not sure I've advanced any theories here, all I have done is present the facts and give commentary, that's what these boards are for.

You must be a Comms. major, so let me clear some things up for you:

1) According to you, me criticizing the team (by presenting facts) means that I cannot be a real fan.
2) Therefore, based on this, when Todd Reesing talks about the team's shortcomings in the post-game press conferences, he can't actually be the real quarterback, and when Mangino criticizes the team's performance every week he can't actually be the real coach.
3) I doubt very much (especially now) that I've said anything on this board worse than Mangino and the rest of the coaches have said to the team at halftime and after some of the games.

Finally, here is the ugly truth: regardless of how you feel about the team's talent, or how much they give you warm, tingly sensations, this year (which is not 2007) the team is 1-5 and last place in the conference. I know you love the team, I love the team too (heck I played there not too long ago), that's why I want them to play well and win.

I've broken it down at this point as simple as I can. I hope that you read this very slowly and try your best to comprehend, though I doubt there's much you actually do comprehend.

Judging by the recent allegations, past allegations, and finger-pointing from people that have been closely associated with Mangino, he is clearly an a$$hole, and one whom will soon be unemployed.

How you can be so callous toward a group of kids (that has brought us so much), when they are dealing with this kind of adversity, is beyond me. Would you be oh-so-motivated to bring your obese coach a win after he choked your buddy in practice that week?

I'm not condoning any physical action taken against a player, but criticizing a team verbally (not abusively) is part of the game. That's how teams grow. As for my part, I don't think I am being callous toward the players. I'm simply pointing out what has gone wrong this year. This does not mean I'm rooting against the team, nor does it mean that I am not a "real fan." No player is beyond criticism, especially not when we are last in the conference.

I was criticized when I played here, and it made me a better player. Plus I think that every fan that pays to watch the team has a right to ask why the team is not performing. If I was defaming them or making derogatory comments about them personally this would be another story, but I haven't. All I've done is analyzed why we are playing so poorly.
