A great college quarterback who after three years of spectacular performances suddenly becomes a substandard one, can’t make the throws he used to make while yawning, loses his uncanny knack for avoiding sacks, loses his ability to concentrate well enough to take care of the football, and this all happens in the span of two weeks.
How can this happen? The only answer is that the nagging groin injury Todd Reesing hesitantly mentioned when asked about his health is more a factor in his performance than anyone is willing to say.
Coaches and players don’t like to blame things on injuries because it makes them sound like excuse-makers, but the reality is, if Reesing’s body doesn’t enable him to perform any better than he has the past two weeks, it’s time to consider handing the reins of this pivotal game against Kansas State to someone else.
Reesing has been cleared to play by doctors, but the issue here isn’t whether it’s risky for him to play. It’s not, or doctors wouldn’t have cleared him. The issue is whether it’s risky for the team to have him play if the limitations of his groin injury keep him from doing the thing he does best, which is to extend plays with sudden dashes and darts this way and that, just the sort of moves a groin injury inhibits, as opposed to the predictable movement required on set plays such as a quarterback draw.
It’s on Reesing to be completely honest with the coaching staff about exactly how it feels, how it impairs his ability, how it’s the same or different from the previous week. And it’s on the coaching staff to evaluate Reesing’s performance during practice to determine whether starting him gives the team the best chance to win.
If he doesn’t show enough in practice to prove he’s back, then the right choice for QB, obviously, is senior receiver Kerry Meier.
He’s rightly revered for the mature, classy way he reacted when he lost to Reesing the job he figured would be his for four years. Teammates would rally around him the way they rally around a healthy Reesing. It would emotionally jack the team, similar to how the team would be charged up for Reesing’s return down the road.
Sure, that would be subtracting a great receiver from the offense, but on many running plays it would be adding another blocker. When Reesing hands off, there is one less man blocking than when Meier runs it himself.
Sound preposterous?
Don’t think turn-over-every-rock Kansas State coach Bill Snyder won’t have minions dig up old film of Meier at quarterback for Kansas during the 2006 season, just in case. With a different offensive coordinator on hand for KU, even that would have limited benefits.
Obviously, KU’s best chance of winning the Sunflower Showdown is with a healthy Reesing at quarterback and Meier at receiver. Just as clearly, Meier could give the Jayhawks a good shot at winning.
Since moving primarily to receiver, Meier has completed 30 of 35 passes for 419 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions. Some of those came on trick plays, the others when the game was out of reach. Even so, it’s ample evidence to know he’s more than just a runner when used at quarterback.

It just blows my mind away thinking about k-state being a potential loss for us. Nobody would of thought about losing to k-state at the beginning of the year. From what I understood...their program was in shambles...with very little talent for bill snyder to work with. Is snyder really that good of a coach ???

Yes, Synder really is that good of a coach and he knows how to run a program by bringing in the right staff for his program. He also is clever at motivating his players, even though he isn't really a rah-rah kind of guy.
I think Meier would be a much better QB in this system then the run he ran under Nick Q. I also think he adds an ability to do some zone reads which he was pretty good at and he is much taller than Reesing and could actually throw out of the pocket without his passes being batted down. Not to mention he has a stronger arm and can get it to the receivers on the edges faster then Todd can.
Privately, I have actually been calling for Meier since the Iowa St. game. I believe he could save our season if they put him in at QB...at least until Reesing's groin is healed and he is no longer a liability.

If Todd Reesing throws "wobbly", what do you call it when Kerry Meier throws? His ball comes out like a retarded torpedo. And his accuracy sucks. Its obvious that he wasn't a pass first QB back in Pittsburg. Meier can't play two positions at once. He moves to QB, and we lose not only a capable gunslinger but an all conference WR as well.
K-State is still a joke for resurrecting a has been coach who runs the QB option read offense. And he still doesn't know how to defend the spread offense. This team gave up 66 to Texas Tech. Nebraska still has no offense, and Mizzou is still Mizzou. Now get it together. There is no excuse for losing to any of these teams. We are supposed to be the best team in the North, its time to start acting like it.

Ok.... here's a scenario
Option a. Guy who is a great guy and Wonderful Possesion Receiver who can also play quarterback. no More eligibility. No track Record as a Starter. Will have 1 veteran Receiver catch Balls.
Option b. Guy who is a great guy and a Wonderful Running Quarter who we have no idea if he can throw accurately. 3 more years of Eligibility and is the odds on favorite to start all 12 games next year behind this same offensive line. No Track record as a Start. Will have Two Veteran Receivers catches balls for him.
I like Option B if Reesing Cannot go.

About losing WR Meier, if QB Meier shows up. Hard to predict the future, but at TTech Meier was invisible except for his fumble. KU ws in the game until the 4th Qtr collapse. Meier never had a ball thrown to him in the first 35 minutes of the game and KU was tied when he caught his first pass.

Look, for everything Reesing has given to KU over the last 3 seasons, he deserves to retain the starting job for the last 4 games, injured or not. If he can go 3-1 (HUGE IF as 0-4 is looking like a possibility with how this team is playing) he will go out on top for the third year in a row and KU will be 8-4 and he will cement his spot in KU football history. To bail on him now just isn't what I would like to see. He is a (if not "the") major reason KU has had success the last 3 seasons, let him have a chance to pull his head out of his arse. Once he is gone, us KU fans will be recalling the "Reesing Days", trust me.

good grief, i can't believe what i'm reading. to even THINK about Meier at QB is preposterous. everyone who thinks this is truly panicking.
he hasn't lined up at QB in 3 years! Did Todd's groin injury at CU cause him to throw the INT and get returned to the 2? did the injury "limit" him to only 400 yards passing in the same game?
he's the starting QB....has smashed all passing records at KU......and if he's ok to play, then he plays.
let's buckle down and figure out how to beat the 'Cats. Todd has a unique opportunity this weekend.....he has a chance to go 2-0 in Manhattan, with three straight wins over the kitties. when was the last time, any KU QB did that?

We have several options:
1. Play Reesing and risk more problems
2. Play Pick and have a fair chance
3. Play Meier and lose a good receiver who just had an odd last game
I vote Pick for QB against ksu!!
Please beat ksu!

build for future play Pick, however, we have to win this week to secure another bowl game, albeit the trash bowl, may be wrong, I'd play the senior.
is it ironic, we are all speaking of which sub to start or play at QB, hard to believe we are facing the elephant in the room, TR, love him, yet he has lost it, injuries or D reading plays, or need new routes, or as I feel: coaching, yet he isn't the same player that led us to 12-1 couple yrs. ago these last several games.
we initiated new opposing QB in last three losses, now our turn to give the Cittens a new QB surprise. if we don't change some major efforts, execution, play calling, aggressiveness we are on track to hand revived State another north crown. Who would have thought it.

Heisman and now groin injury? Coincidence? We will lose Saturday due to lack of ability against another quality opponenet, player ego, coaching and the fact that Todd Reesing has not played well against a quality defense. KSU played very well against an OU team that is far better than we are at OU.
From TreeTop: we will be lucky to make it to a bowl game!

But then again Sharp has been known to absolutley destroy ksu in the past. So who knows. With Todd...it's done. I said last week to start playing Pick and I got ripped to schreds. We just got through playing a defense that lost to A&M. It's time to replace Todd Reesing.

We're predictable. Very little variety in the play calling. The shovel pass works once in each game. Yet they try it three or four times.
We could not block Tech's Defensive Ends. Yet . . . there was not one screen pass, reverse or Meier option pass.
How about a two-back set like we used in the Orange Bowl?
The personnel is, for the most part, fine. Our limited, predictable play-calling makes us easy to defend.

A groin injury is one that everyone wants to laugh at, but it's the muscle attachment on the inside of the hip. Obviously, there are different levels of severity. I suffered from this type of injury and it severely limits lateral movement, but not straight-line speed. You feel fine until you have to run & cut.
Also, if it's Reesings plant leg, this would totally expalin his lack of velocity & accuracy because you just can't push off like normal. This is the worst injury for a mobile QB who depends on scrambling.

When I read the headline, I immediately thought, Why the h*ll not play Pick? Then I read the article and was taken in by the suggestion to bring Meier back as qb......almost. After re-reading it and some of the comments above, I still think if they are not going with TR then they NEED to start Kale Pick. Think about it! You'll have Meier in the huddle calming him down, telling him just go through your reads, throw the ball to me or Dez and you'll be fine. He'll also have Sharp or Opurum to dump the ball off if he gets in trouble. And we all know that Sharp is best going around the end. I mean, seriously, this team has some of the most powerful offensive weapons in the Big VII.
So, in conclusion, if you're not going to start tr, start pick!!!

I do have to wonder when TR got hurt during the CU game because he started out awful and finished pretty good, but I will allow that after suffering the injury early it got better in the warm sun we had that day. And as is often the case with such injuries, it tightened up the next day and has been bothering him and hampering his play ever since.
Anyway, it follows that if the groin injury is causing TR to fumble, throw interceptions, take sacks, short-arm balls, etc. then Coach needs to rest him until he is healed. Sure, it's ok to downplay the injury now so as to not telegraph who will be playing next week. Pick is the number 2 QB so we have to go with him, not Kerry. Kerry was a run first QB who did not fit well into KU' system 3 years ago and would not today. Besides, we need him at Receiver. Go with Pick and a full O game plan--maybe not a complicated one but certainly a lot more than just QB draws. A secondary benefit is building a QB for the future.
If that means losing to KSU and NU while TR heals, so be it. But, hopefully TR would be ready for the game that really matters in Arrowhead.

I agree with those saying that we should go with Pick if Reesing is out. Meier is a senior and our best possesion receiver. Pick is a sophomore who will be succeeding Reesing, so he could use this valuble experience if it comes down to it and Kerry would be a big part of that.

I say replace Reesing. When you choose to be a quarterback, you accept everything that goes with the job including criticism. Pick or Meier would be fine with me. Anything we do for Kansas State game is going to be a gamble. If we stay with Reesing and lose the game. That will be four in a row. Something is wrong with Reesing besides a groin injury. The last three games, he has made tons of mistakes and bad throws. Pick is getting no experience other than running the ball a few times
during a game. We don't even know if he can throw or not, as he is not being given the chance. If we can win this Sat and then beat Nebraska when I drive up from Texas, we are in good shape.!!!

Who would have thought that the Jayhawk's defense actually kept them in the game, but assuming he can play at full health you got to go with with Reesing. If he is unable to start I think you have to go with Pick, he has alot of upside and has the more recent experience. I also agree alot of our problems on offense has been play selection, I mean even the commentators on FSN knew Reesing was going to the shovel pass on 3rd and long. Why don't we run more gimmicks, like have Sharp run the Wildcat with Briscoe coming across in motion and he could either hand off or run it himself or why don't we run more plays involving lateralling to Meier just have him launch it deep to Briscoe. Gotta switch it up because right now its too predictable.

This is one of the better articles I have read from Keegan.... With that said, I don't know if I am ready to give up on Reesing yet. Keep in mind, he is the only reason 50% of people are even posting on this website today or attending games on Saturdays. However, if he is truly suffering from a groin injury then he needs to evaluate himself and swallow much of the same pride that Meier swallowed 3 years ago. Give the reins back to Meier in a game that is very winnable with decent QB play. It's not going to take anything spectacular but man would the team rally around Meier. Rest the groin so that we can finish the season strong. Nobody will question who the starting QB should be when Reesing is healthy and thinking straight...

Reesing needs to start, remember how bad things were during the quarteback carousels of 04 and 05. I was happy though that Mangino had the guts to yank him and send a message against TT. I also think it's not a terrible idea to go to Pick again against KSU if Reesing coughs up another costly turnover.
That said, stuff the run and hold on to the ball and we win by 14.
The good news: if both teams play relatively well KU wins.
The bad news: it's been about 6 weeks since we have played relatively well.
My in-laws are huge KSU fans and I had to endure the last 2 KSU home wins. They won because A&M and Colo. each gave away to first half turnovers deep in their own territory which KSU turned into points. After that KSU simply controlled the game by running the ball and cruised to victory. They don't beat themselves.
This is frightening considering that all we have done the past three games is beat ourselves. If I was a betting man I don't know if I would lay any money down on KU in this one, but I remain cautiously optimistic. I can't bear the thought of having to listen to the rest of my family talk about this game all year if KU chokes another one off.

Reesing has not played at a consistent level this entire season, guys. I recall sitting in the stands at North Colorado and the Duke games thinking to myself, "Wow, we're punting way too many times against these guys." I know that in both of those games, Reesing piled up huge numbers by the end but the first half of every KU game this season has been abysmal. There's no consistency -- the last three games have just shined a spotlight on that inconsistency.
To those that say, "Let Todd play...even if he sucks, even if he's hurt...he deserves it because he gave us a bowl of oranges." Sorry, sports is a dog-eat-dog business. If you don't perform, you're out. I don't care if you're Brett Farve, Joe Montana, or Tim Tebow. You screw up enough, you're done.
Reesing has screwed up enough...If I were a coach, I'd evaluate him during the week and see how he's doing on the practice field. If I thought he wasn't making the grade, I'd play Pick. If I did play him this Saturday, I'd bench him 1st Qtr if he screwed up even one play like he did 8 or 9 times last week.
Something is not right with Todd...maybe too much wine from a bag...

I've said for weeks that Reesing just hasn't at all been himself. I must say I feel horrible about it. Not because of our heart wrenching losses but because I certainly do not want his senior year to be like this - he deserves much better than that. Reesing has brought so much to Jayhawk football over the past few years, most notably the win against Missouri last year. I look at the photo of Meier catching the winning touchdown pass and it still brings a smile to my face. And of course there's the great Orange Bowl win. Jayhawk football has been SO much fun and we owe a great deal of that to Todd Reesing. He is struggling right now and it certainly doesn't help his state of mind to get booed or put down by his own fans. I think we need to support him and all the Jayhawks. You know, like stand up and CHEER. Let's cheer them on this week at KSU. Rock Chalk!!
By the way - still horrible with the jerk fan who sits behind me. I took his crap the entire game against Oklahoma in spite of the fact that I gave in and only stood on "big" plays. I was told to sit down and shut up more than once. I even offered to call the athletic department and refund the price of his ticket if I found out I was wrong. To which I was told to let it go and shut up. Now mind you, I didn't start it to begin with. I can't believe a KU fan treats another KU fan this way. Of course they do nothing but sit back there and complain about every play call, the timing of a time out, the coaching, the players ... everything. They never say anything positive and they look miserable through the whole game - not sure why they even go. Anyway - what the heck do I do about this? We take our 10 year old grandson to all the games and it's not a good atmosphere for him to be around.

Can we pass to the back coming up the middle out of the backfield? We run the same crap over and over-no wonder we're so easy to defend. It is time for the intensity level to rise up in this team. For so long this year they have lacked intensity, and maybe that comes with being used to winning, but they got that way by being intense. Those 4 turnovers against Texas Tech killed us. We would have scored at least another 10 points while not allowing any more in that game, but instead those two turnovers in the 4th quarter gave this team some adversity they didn't know how to overcome. For the future, if they learn from it, it can be positive, but its time to learn from it now with some big time turnovers the last 3 games, that cost us at least 2 of them, and it would have kept OU from running up 35. In fact, it could have been the difference in that game. That big int return for a TD that gave OU a 14-0 lead when we were in the red zone, and about to tie it up. That turned the game around and the wind came out of the intensity level that was being played and it showed big time in the 2nd half. This team is under achieving right now, and it is partially due to the coaching staff not making adjustments to the other team's defense. When they start to cheat up on a receiver, its time to make them pay for it. If we don't adjust, we might not win another game this year and will not be bowling.

Todd is running for his life every dang game and can't have any consistant running attack. slow the rush down and give him time to find his receivers. he turns to avoid one onrushing behemoth only to be crushed by another. he is a little warrior and you fair weather fans are turning on him? he turned average teams into winners with his guts and ability to avoid the rush but having a too small converted TE as your LT is going to get him killed along with the other inexperienced linemen.
you have to go with todd and hope he survives because the old dude down the road is laying a trap and will have blitzes coming at him starting when they get off the bus. Win the game? snyder is going to expose mangino bigtime and it won't be for the faint of heart. this could have been a great year with mu and nu being in transition but the fatman didn't bring a d or have an O line that could protect the crown jewels on offense. Blame lies squarely wiht him.

Meier, I think the hiatus from QB would prove to have been a good thing. I would hope that there would be a lot of run plays for him. Second, Pick. Third, Reesing, even if healthy. He became the KU offense. This should have never happended but it is done, and so is Reesing. If the stuff about him bar-hopping is true, then I have to say, it has shown. Bench him.

Great article!!! I think you are right on!! Todd Reesing is selfish, selfish, selfish! If he is playing injured, he is a detriment to the team,an embarassment to the university and a disapppointment for the fans! The talent that KU has, this should have been a winning season and another bowl game year! The TV announcers have commented week after week about him being "out-of;sync" He can't pass longer than 10 yds. and once he gets sacked or something goes wrong, he freaks out and gets very frustrated! His comment "the quarterback job is not up for grabs" tells us how self consumed in himself he is!!! What an ego! He will leave the legacy of being the golden QB who because of his selfishness, cost KU a winning season, the Big 12 North title, possibly the Big 12 title, and a bowl game!! He deserves NO awards! Enough is Enough! How horrible for the senior class, started out great and finishing looking like crap!!!
