Kansas catcher Buck Afenir was named the Big 12 player of the week, the conference announced Monday,

Afenir, a senior from Escondido, Calif., went 6-for-11 (.545) in a three-game weekend series against No. 11 Kansas State. He contributed two-run home runs in each of the final two games as the Jayhawks went on to win the series, 2-1.

In Big 12 play, Afenir is hitting .370 with five homers, seven doubles and 38 RBIs.

Tony Thompson (May 4) is the only other KU position player to win a conference weekly award this season.

KU will take on K-State at 9 a.m. Wednesday in the opening game of the Big 12 Tournament at Bricktown Ballpark in Oklahoma City. Check back to KUSports.com for the latest KU baseball coverage from the Big 12 Tournament, including live-game blogs during each of KU's games in OKC.

What a tremendous year Buck put together. He and Thompson were the heart of that team and showed that without the injures KU had last year they would have been in the same spot a year ago. They were extremely good the previous two years but just couldn't get over the injures and so many one run losses becasue of it. I would like to know where all the people are at who were all over Buck this off season when he got in trouble. Kids make mistakes and Buck did that, he is a great person and has done so much for KU. You should be thanking him for that. Maybe if there were more baseball fans at KU then the ones who just want to wait and talk bad about them as well as never appear at Hoglound ballpark, you could see how great these kids are and how hard they play for Coach Price every day of the season! So let me hear you knocking cause KU is about to make a lot of noise and put together a run here that no one is anticipating and I can't wait to watch it happen....and Buck is gonna have a huge role in doing that...Rock Chalk
