Plans for a gameday shuttle in the works

Plans for a gameday shuttle from downtown to Memorial Stadium are again in the works for Kansas University football game days.

Commissioners even are open to the idea of expanding the shuttle service to take people from different areas of town to the stadium. Areas discussed included South Iowa Street, the area near the Holidome in northern Lawrence, and an area along East 23rd Street.

But unlike last year, the city may charge a fare to ride the bus. Commissioners made no decision, but said they wanted to study the idea of charging a $1 or $2 fare to help cover the city’s costs to provide the service.

Last year, the Kansas Athletic Department helped cover unexpected costs to provide the service. But City Manager David Corliss said leaders with KU Athletics had told him that they were not prepared to provide funding for the service this year.

For having to avoid finding parking near the stadium and instead doing a Park & Ride, that's a great idea, and will probably save gasoline. I'd pay a couple of bucks to ride a shuttle to a game...if I lived in Lawrence (my wife promised we could get a vacation home there once we retire & have lots of money, heh heh).

Kick a buck for the shuttle does sound like a bargain.

At the same time, will the local buisnesses put their $ where their mouths were, in '07 in particular, in recognizing the economic benefit of having 50k+ fans (when will we be expanding the Stadium?) in town. The City needs to get creative and plan the bus stops and parking with the merchants. Will it be a parking lot, or a remote tailgate party? Will you have to bring your own party, or just roll up to one courtesy of the merchants - for a nominal fee of course.

Lots of potential out there, especially as the tradition builds. No reason this Memorial Stadium can't have 60k, 70k, 80k or 90k on every Saturday in the fall.

That would be great if they did the south Iowa shuttle. We paid $20.00 to park in lot 90 across fom Allen Fieldhouse and then ride the bus.
