FINAL: KU defeats UT, 83-73

With UT down seven, James misses an open three from the side. The Longhorns really needed that one.

Collins misses a three, but Aldrich gathers the offensive rebound. The Jayhawks wisely pull it back out, and Collins is fouled. The students start the “One more year” chant. Collins makes both free throws.

After two more Collins free throws, Abrams misses a forced-up three, and the ball goes out of bounds to KU.

Collins tries to make something happen on a drive late, and he lands awkwardly with 14 seconds left. He limps off the court but doesn’t look seriously hurt.

Kleinmann and Bechard check back in at the 14-second mark, then out again with seven seconds to receive one last ovation.

Marcus Morris squeezes the ball tight as the seconds run down, but there’s no technical this time. KU claims the outright Big 12 championship with the 10-point victory.

KU 78/UT 71 — 2:44 left in game

The students are counting each second on James’ free throws. They get to 13 on the first free throw and 14 on the second free throw. Though their counting is a little fast, I would say James is flirting somewhere between nine and 11 seconds.

KU executes well to get a shot for Aldrich, as Morningstar throws in a low bounce pass inside and the big man is fouled. Aldrich makes both free throws.

On a James miss, Pittman goes over Aldrich’s back, and that could be a costly whistle. It’s the ninth team foul, meaning Aldrich will shoot one-and-one on the other end. He makes both.

KU misses a great opportunity in transition up four. Collins races up the floor, but he tried to be too perfect, throwing an ill-advised bounce pass that was stolen by UT.

Pittman gets a layup on the other end, and it’s a four-point swing.

With confidence, Taylor drives baseline and puts in a floater off the glass. After a Mason layup, Aldrich bounces in an 18-footer.

Two bad calls right next to us. KU should have had the basketball when it went out of bounds, but the official ruled that Collins touched it when the ball rolled between his legs. On the inbounds, the same official blew a questionable whistle on Morningstar while Abrams was shooting. Abrams makes both freebies.

Huge swing by KU seconds later, though. In transition, Collins scoops back to Morningstar for a three, and he drains it. The next possession, Collins steals the ball from Abrams, then on the break, throws back to Taylor for a one-handed slam. Timeout UT. Collins screams to the crowd, then chest-bumps Aldrich. That could be the sequence that wins the game for KU.

KU 65/UT 63 — 7:31 left in game

There’s the Aldrich we’re used to seeing. He blocks a shot on one end, then fights underneath on the other, finishing inside with a shot off the glass.

Markieff Morris rips away a defensive rebound, and he’s fouled. He hits both shots on a one-and-one opportunity.

With KU down one, Collins misses a layup, but Markieff Morris slams home the follow as KU takes its first lead.

James makes two free throws, but KU takes the lead right back with some luck. Collins scoops back out to Taylor, who banks in a three from straight on. Self flashes a huge grin. That’s two huge shots Taylor has made from long-range this season using the glass.

UT 61/KU 56 — 10:30 left in game

Aldrich gets beat by Pittman on a free-throw block out. Something’s not right with the KU big man. It turns into a valuable three-point possession for UT, as Pittman makes two free throws.

Marcus Morris picks up his fourth foul on an offensive rebound try, and a minute later, UT throws a lob right over Aldrich, and Pittman tomahawks it home. The Jayhawks drop their guard for 45 seconds, and suddenly, they’re down five again.

UT 56/KU 56 — 11:15 left in game

Markieff Morris gets the ball down low and reverses to the baseline for a hook shot off the glass and in. Did Danny Manning teach him that?

Releford gets fouled inside and makes two free throws. Don’t overlook those, as he came into the game as a 50-percent free-throw shooter.

KU is one stop away from having this crowd go bonkers. The Jayhawks keep trimming the lead to two before UT responds.

Finally, KU ties it, as Taylor goes to the basket and lays it softly off the glass. The Jayhawks are being much more aggressive with drives in the second half against UT’s over-aggressive defense.

UT 50/KU 45 — 15:41 left in game

Marcus Morris is playing as aggressively as I’ve seen him play. He takes a ball straight to the basket for two, then on the next possession, screams at Collins to pass him the ball. When Marcus gets it, he goes hard to the rim, forcing Pittman’s third foul.

Little floats in a fadeaway to pull KU within one, and the crowd is recharged.

Clint Chapman puts in a long jumper, and Justin Mason follows with a layup. The Longhorns have done a good job of damage control through the first media timeout of the second half.

KU scoring

Collins 11 (5-for-9 shooting), Marcus Morris 7, Morningstar 6, Reed 3, Releford 2, Little 2, Markieff Morris 2, Taylor 2, Aldrich 2.

KU was 13-for-28 from the floor (46.4 percent), 4-for-6 from three (66.7 percent) and 7-for-8 from the free-throw line (87.5 percent).

UT was 17-for-30 from the floor (56.7 percent), 3-for-5 from three (60 percent) and 7-for-8 from the free-throw line (87.5 percent).

James had 20 first-half points on 8-for-10 shooting. Pittman added 10 points.

UT out-rebounded KU, 18-11. Both teams had six turnovers.

Halftime thoughts

Poor, poor defensive first half for KU. The Jayhawks have held 69 straight opponents under 50 percent shooting. The last team to shoot over 50 percent against KU was Louisiana-Monroe in the 2007-08 season opener. That streak is in serious jeopardy today.

Why is it that every time KU plays Texas, both teams score like crazy?

Where has Aldrich gone offensively? He has just two points on 1-for-6 shooting, and the Jayhawks have actually gotten him the ball quite often.

KU once again is struggling on the boards, getting out-rebounded by seven in the first half. Aldrich only has four boards, and no one else is stepping up to fill in the gaps. No other Jayhawk had more than one rebound in the first half.

By the way, the Morris twins are 3-for-3 from the floor.

UT 44/KU 37 — Halftime

The Jayhawks are getting one-dimensional offensively: Throw the ball to Collins, watch him try to make a move, stand around. Not a pretty sight for KU fans.

On the other end, KU is worse, though. Layups by Pittman and Balbay and free throws from James give the Longhorn a 6-0 run. Self uses his third timeout, as UT has made 17 of 28 shots (60.7 percent).

The Jayhawks make a much-needed mini-run out of the break. Marcus Morris uses a quick move to the bucket to get two, and after a steal, Releford glides under the basket and softly puts it off the glass and in.

Pittman doinks a dunk, and KU gets a chance for the last shot. Collins splits two defenders, then passes out to Tyrel Reed for a three that he swishes. The Jayhawks end the half on a 7-0 run, but still trail by seven at the break.

As the officials leave the court, they receive the loudest boos I’ve heard for the zebras all year.

UT 38/KU 30 — 3:34 left in 1st half

KU has switched to a 2-3 zone. It doesn’t work on the first possession, as Dexter Pittman gets the ball near the bucket and is fouled by Markieff. It has to be killing Self as a defensive coach to have to go to a zone so often.

Justin Mason hits a runner in the lane against KU’s man defense, and Self uses another timeout.

The Longhorns are getting whatever shot they want right now. Pittman gets it inside for a layup. He then catches a lob pass over Mario Little and gets fouled on his way up. The last two games have been some of the worst defensive performances we’ve seen from the Jayhawks all year.

The only good news for KU is that Collins is starting to heat up. He hits a pull-up 18-footer and seems to have some swagger back. He’s up to 11 points on 5-for-8 shooting.

UT 28/KU 26 — 7:14 left in 1st half

James hits another 19-footer. It looks like KU is trapping all ball screens so that Abrams can’t get free, and that’s opened James up for quite a few shots. The Jayhawks might need to switch it up at halftime to start worrying more about James.

Bad call right in front of me. A.J. Abrams flew in under the basket and mugged Aldrich, getting him across the arm and face. The official called a jump ball. KU’s fans have reason to be upset.

James and Abrams are taking all the shots for the Longhorns — and deservedly so. The two have combined for 22 of UT’s 28 points on 9-for-12 combined shooting.

UT 15/KU 15 — 11:35 left in 1st half

Morningstar ignites the crowd with a three from the wing. A few seconds later in transition, Tyshawn Taylor scoops a pass to Morningstar for a rhythm three, and he drains it.

Smart play by Markieff Morris in the paint. Gary Johnson backed into him a couple times in the post, and Markieff knew what was coming next. The next time Johnson threw his weight back, Markieff accepted the contact, falling back to pick up the offensive foul.

James has taken over offensively for UT. He hits a fadeaway and a guarded jumper, and he has 12 of his teams 15 points on 5-for-7 shooting.

UT 11/KU 9 — 15:02 left in 1st half

Brennan Bechard and Matt Kleinmann get a start and 51 seconds of action before KU coach Bill Self puts in subs. The seniors receive a nice ovation as they go back to the bench.

KU’s first four field goals are taken by Sherron Collins or Cole Aldrich. The sophomore center Aldrich is 1-for-2, and the Jayhawks have done a nice job of looking inside so far.

After checking in, Brady Morningstar gets the tough defensive assignment of A.J. Abrams. Morningstar struggled against Texas Tech’s Alan Voskuil, but he has a chance to redeem himself against just as good of a shooter today.

Damion James is already 2-for-2 from three. He came in shooting 29.9 percent. The Jayhawks aren’t getting many breaks lately when it comes to opponents shooting somewhere around their season averages.

3:05 p.m.

I haven’t seen this often. UT coach Rick Barnes completely backed away from his team while the introduction video was playing, letting all his players watch the videoboard. Don’t know if that’s a good idea, but we’ll see how it works out for the Longhorns.

We're up to 104.8 on the decibel meter. Not too shabby.

2:49 p.m.

Another reason to feel good about today's game if you are a KU fan: The Jayhawks have won 24 straight Senior Day games (and 25 straight Senior Day games if you count 2007, when the Jayhawks didn't have a senior).

2:18 p.m.

Here are some notes about today’s game against Texas:

UT has never won in Allen Fieldhouse. The Longhorns are 0-8 against KU in this building.

Guard Dogus Balbay entered the starting lineup for UT seven games ago. In those seven games, the Longhorns are 5-2. They also have scored 5.9 points per game more since Balbay has started. In those games, Balbay is averaging 7.1 points and 6.1 assists with a 43-to-12 assist-to-turnover ratio.

Texas is one of just three schools to have advanced at least to the Sweet 16 in five of the last seven years. Can you guess the other two schools that have accomplished that feat?

A.J. Abrams has made 23 of 55 three-pointers (41.8 percent) in his last seven games.

Other than Abrams, UT has no true three-point threat. Abrams has made 39.5 percent of his threes this year, but no other Longhorn on the roster is shooting 30 percent or better from deep. To compare, KU has six players that shoot better than 30 percent from the three-point line (Brady Morningstar, 44.1 percent; Marcus Morris, 42.9 percent; Tyrel Reed, 39.3 percent; Sherron Collins, 38.5 percent; Travis Releford, 37.5 percent; and Tyshawn Taylor, 35.6 percent). The next-best long-range shooter for the Longhorns is Damion James, who has made 29.9 percent of his three-point tries. Texas is last in the Big 12, making just 32.0 percent of its shots from beyond the arc.

Six-foot-7 Damion James has five double-doubles in his last six games. During that stretch, he’s averaging 16.7 points and 12.5 rebounds.

The 2007-08 Senior Night speeches.

1:35 p.m.

Welcome back to the Newell Post Live, coming to you from Allen Fieldhouse where the No. 9 Kansas Jayhawks are getting to take on the Texas Longhorns.

Today is Senior Day for walk-ons Matt Kleinmann and Brennan Bechard, and both will start in the game against Texas.

With that in mind, I thought I’d bring back some videos of other KU speeches.

To the left are last year’s speeches from Darnell Jackson, Sasha Kaun, Russell Robinson, Rodrick Stewart and Jeremy Case. I also went ahead and threw up the highlights from last year’s 109-51 blowout on Senior Night over Texas Tech.

I also found some other speeches in the depth of our site. Click on the links for the 2004-05 senior class speeches from Wayne Simien, Keith Langford, Aaron Miles and Michael Lee.

If anyone is concerned about ending in a tie with Missery for the B12 championship -SORRY, your anxiety is of no concern. At halftime in College Station, Mark Turgeon's Aggies 51, Missery 29. Missery's play in the first half looked very similar to Columbia, MO middle school's second team. I wonder if they can hold this one under 25 points (I hope they don't)? rock chalk - now let's do the same with the shorthorns.

Nice run to end the half, but we're getting killed on the defensive end. Their guards are blowing by us everytime, splitting screens, the post guys are getting the entrance pass way too easily, and we don't have the intensity on defense at all. To top it all off, we are getting hammered on the glass as well. 16 to 9 at halftime.

We're very lucky to be only down by 7. Get some adjustments coach.

Looks like KU just came out so flat that they allowed the momentum to swing in Texas' favor. Ref's are as susceptible as anyone to getting caught up in momentum, so they are responding with the type of calls that you would expect on the road.

Hopefully that little run at the end will give us some energy. Not only will it result in more points, but will help us at least have a home court advantage.

Cole has really been showing how much he needs to improve lately. He gets bullied out of position by big interior players and responds with really pathetic hook attempts... and reacts slowly to the double and can make the quick pass. This keeps up and Sherron will have to try to force it all night.

Nice seeing QT in there to give a different look defending Pittman. Someone needs to put in the effort.

I'm hoping for more minutes for Travis in the second half. I'm hoping he can limit the TOs, but if Cole continues to struggle this bad and we can't work a decent inside-out game, we need someone other than Sherron to be able to take it into the lane and either make plays at the rim or kick out for an open shot.

Now for the Big Xll championship.

This one came down to pride and guts and poise in the stretch.

KU had them and Texas did not.

Sherron "Sherronatron" Collins: He has separated from all former KU PGs. He is a terrific PG, an even better leader, and one of the finest athletes I have seen at any size.

Cole: He got hit, pushed, tripped, punched in the chest endlessy, fouled every time he got a rebound or took a shot until for a stretch there he just could do nothing at all. Many got down on him, but those that did were not acknowledging that it just is very difficult to do much when a 300 pound tub of lard is allowed to physically mug you everytime down the floor with one foul in ten being called on him. But Cole did the exact thing you have to do when everything is going against you. You just keep going, keep swimming against the current until the the lard bucket gets to tired to lug his fast butt up and down the floor anymore, until someone draws blood on him, until you get a break...and when you do you just focus on what has to be done...you be the big man...you make the free throws that begin to turn the tide...you take and make the shots at the top of the key that lesser post men are afraid to take...you turn the tide so that your indomitable teammate Sherron Collins can take over the game. Cole, after a whistle-less mugging, still went 12 and 10. Amazing!!

Brady Morningstar: the guy put on one of the greatest defensive displays I have seen. Someone said he must have run 50 miles in today's game and that sums it up best; that and Abrams line score (2-11, 1-6). Oh, and Brady got his 9 points on 3-4 from planet trinitron. And 4 rebounds and 4 assists. It was just a great display of efficiency and athleticism on his part.

Tyshawn Taylor: Quantum T went aerial all over their faces, dished 5 assists, seems to have gotten over his fear of contact at last.

Marcus/Markief Morris: 17 points, 4 rebounds. They did their jobs today in one of the hottest landing zones they are going to see. They were light on the boards, but they didn't back down either.

jaybate (anonymous) says...

Tyrel Reed: very quiet line score, but Self kept putting him into the meat grinder whenever things got sticky and his defense continued its slow, steady improvement.

Mario Little: for my money, Mario Little was the real hero of this game. Why? Because when all appeared lost, when KU didn't seem to have it, when Cole was stuck in the Fight Club with Pittman, when the Twins were not able to get rebounds, when it looked like Sargeant Collins was out on point all by himself in a very hostile fire fight with the only gun that wasn't jammed, Lance Corporal Little came out of his fox hole and stood up in the midst of a violent enemy assault on the inner sanctum of KU basketball and said, "No way are we losing this game. I am not rolling over. I am not giving in. I am going to take three of you with me if you get me." And he seemed to look over his shoulders at the rest of the team and say, "Back me up, dammit, follow me!" He wasn't in there at the end to grab any glory. But I guaran-dam-ty you that when he went in that locker room after the game Sherron Collins walked up to him and shot him a look that said, "You did it, Corporal, you turned the tide, we just finished what you started."

Mario Little, you only played a few minutes. You did not score big points or grab huge rebounds. But it was you who saved this game for KU. If you hadn't stemmed the tide when you did, all the heroics either would not have happened, or would have come too late and been for naught. You made this team league champion today in a way that will not show up in the box score or in the sports journalists coverage of the game. But you had the heart of a lion, when ever Sherron was faltering. We are forever in your debt for making us true league champions. I know just yesterday I said you should have redshirted, but I was wrong, wrong, wrong, as wrong as anyone could ever be. You were the difference Mario Little. You were at your best when you needed your best and you changed the course of the game into one that KU had a chance to win.

You have to get off the Sherron Kool-Aid. I told a handful of my co-workers, who just also happen to be basketball fans, about you rating Collins as the best point guard ever at KU and everyone just laughed at the absurdity of it.

Leaders don't say things to fire other teams up and then follow it up with a game like he had versus Tech.

Leaders don't make a stupid cross court pass during a crucial part of the game that gets picked off.

Leaders don't drive into traffic with only a handful of seconds left in the game when your team is up by ten points, possibly injuring himself in the process.

Is Collins good? Hell yeah!

Would this team be Big XII Champs w/o him? No.

But to put him above all other KU point guards is just sheer idiocy.

kc_wildfire,

I swear you have to be from Fizzou. Either that or you are a basketball challenged mutant from the M-51 star system. Ain't even close at PG.

The only guy who can even try to fill Sherron's XXXXL jock is Kirk Hinrich and Hinrich was playing with a totally experienced team the short time that he handled the point. And he was third option until his senior freaking year, pal. Look it up. And then he couldn't win a ring. Hinrich was great. But Sherron's already done more sooner than Kirk ever did; that spells b-e-t-t-e-r!!!!!

Freshman year Sherronatron brings offense and becomes the straw that stirs the running game, plays key stretches at the PG and we're B12 champs. His coach tells Fran Fraschilla that Sherron was probably the best player on the team. Look it up!

Sophomore year, Sherron plays through injuries the entire season and basically has to come in every game 4-6 minutes into the first half to get the team rolling and scoring. He plays down the stretch of lots of games, too. He's the nonstarting starting PG and directs the offense to a national championship win. Ho hum!

Junior year he is finally sort of healthy (he's still got an elbow problem obviously), starts every game, and leads a team comprised of a soph post man who has never played more than 5-10 minutes in a game, a redshirt sophomore who has never played a game, a freshman shooting guard who only hits 38% from three, and a freshman 4 who can't jump or rebound or keep from fouling out most of the time (and who shows up about 1 in 3 games) to a 25-6 record overall, and a conference championship with a 14-2 record (better than the previous year's national champions record), while averaging 18 points per game.

What? Are you insane, or just cracking your incisors from chrystal meth?

We don't even come close in this Texas game without Sherronatron...not...even...close!

The guy is a freaking virtuoso at PG! Awaken, child. Reality is not something to be frightened of. Embrace it like a man. You can kick the meth and lead a constructive life. Quit sweeping the counters clean of Sudafed and start living.

You can do it. You to jkanderson.

Geez, I hate it when excellence is not recognized by fried brains.

Put Kirk on this team and he averages 20 ppg. It just so happens that he didn't need to score that many due to the fact that he had more offense around him. I guaran-darn-tee you Hinrich would never run his mouth before a game and then follow it up with a 3 for 19 performance.

Even today Sherron had a bad shooting percentage, 37%. A lot of players can score 18+ per game when they chuck up that many shots.

Jaybate I've got to second everything your saying about Collins. Also, I think he gets fouled every time he goes to the basket. Gets knocked to the floor by three people and the referees act like nothing happened. Basketball is getting close to the roller derby. It used to be a game of finesse. Great dribbling and passing beautiful dunks and layups. A real art form. Now it's survival of the fittest. Lard boy should have been gone by the half. What can the league be thinking? Why would anyone stay in college and play sports while the schools and coaches get rich and the players get beaten up. I guess I'm getting old.

The hawks need to be congratulated on their season. More than any of us had a right to expect. The program keeps on winning and makes all of lives more enjoyable. All other teams in the area are fakers compared to Kansas.

Game Summary Post Script:

I apologize for not mentioning Travis Releford, who keeps showing flashes of the very good player he will likely become next year, or at the latest, the year after.

He has developed from being a player who could help us, to one who does. Unfortunately the amount of help he brings is still being reduced by uncertain, or mistaken choices on when to pass and where to be on offense.

It is hard for me to explain this problem. It seems a peculiar situation. It is as if he has such a surplus of physical ability and speed that the speed of D1 play can speed him up past the speed at which he can make effective decisions. This is sort of the opposite problem most new players have. Most players have to struggle to make their bodies play faster and quicker. Tyrel Reed is an example. As a result they are always compensating for being a half step behind, until they do get quicker and until they do learn the necessary spacing their physical abilities require them to maintain versus an opponent.

Travis seems to get going too fast for play, or for effective decision making. It makes him look great at times, and completely out of sync at others. Asking Travis to play within his envelope is difficult, because the size of his envelope is part of the problem. Its too big for his judgement. I can't say that I recall this problem before. Certainly I did not have this problem. :-) I suppose if you have to have a problem, it is a good one to have.

March 7, 2009 at 11:17 p.m. ( | suggest removal )

jaybate (anonymous) says...

It presents an unusual problem for coaches, however. What they would like is for Travis' thinking to catch up to how fast he really can play so as to optimize his talent. But since that isn't happening very fast, and since they need him for 5-10 minutes a game, they must ask him to slow down a bit and play under more control. This is not easy to do when the speedy pace of D1 is constantly stimulating him to out run it. Asking Travis to slow down is akin to asking a mechanic to detune a Ferrari to get better gas mileage. Still, the reality is that Travis has to learn to play within his mental limits rather than his physical limits.

A player ought to be able to give his coach what he needs, if it is within his skill set. Why Travis Releford continues to struggle so remains a mystery to me, as it must remain to himself and Coach Self.

He runs the floor amazingly well and has a true knack for transition play that he shows almost ever time he plays. And he can get to the rim, though he is not playing enough to really get confident in those moves.

I am also convinced that he could be a terrific defender, if he could just learn to stay in defensive mode all the time. His on-ball defense is quite good now, he fights through picks pretty well, and he is pretty good playing the lane, when the ball is one pass away, but the second it is two passes away he stands straight up and is frequently left behind when his man starts cutting to another spot on the floor. Good defense is a full time job, not a part time job, especially when you are only being asked to play for short stretches.

Here's to hoping Travis can get mind and body in sync with D1. If he does, we've got a serious two on our hands. He's shooting 37% on threes right now, when his game is out of synch. He ought to be able to get to 40% with it in synch. Let's hope.

bobbysfissure,

You're not getting too old. The game is getting too rough. The last wave of irresponsible refereeing and violence peaked the year MSU and Mateen "Meat Clever" Cleaves met Wisconsin in the NCAA final game and simulated the old video game where the repetitive chant is "body blow, body blow, body blow."

I don't know why referees start not calling the game according to the rules. May be it is just psychological drift that occurs from being put under so much negative reinforcement by coaches game after game after game for calling fouls. Hey, screw it, let'em play so I don't have to slow down for an earful anymore. Or maybe there's some kind of coercion by the network to make the games sufficiently violent to geek up the ratings up. Kind of a Roller Ball thing. Or maybe its random. Violence happens. Or maybe in a society that invades countries that don't attack us and runs a torture prison archipeligo in which many innocents are tortured 24/7, and uses death squads to terrorize populations we occupy...maybe a society like that is just prone to violence. Or maybe its referees watching The Sopranos for too many years in their hotel rooms after games. I don't know. But the violence has got to stop, or we're not talking about basketball anymore. Its wrong whenever a guy shoots the ball near the paint that he has to expect to be mugged and occassionally phyically injured, as par for the course.

Sherron does make mistakes, but the statement that was challenged was that Sherron is the best PG ever at KU. That would mean that if he isn't, then someone else needs to be shown that they are. So who is it?
Kirk?
Mario?
JoJo?
Darnell?
Jacque?
Aaron?
Adonis?
Turge?
Cedric?
Someone else?

Some will seem to have a better case than others, but rather than just make derogatory remarks toward one another, make an intelligent case for someone and why the others aren't it.

March 8, 2009 at 12:30 a.m. ( | suggest removal )

jaybate (anonymous) says...

dagger108,

First, good idea to lay them out.

Second, I have made my case repeatedly of Sherron being a better PG than Kirk,Mario and Jo Jo. The guy I have forgotten to consider in detail is Darnell Valentine. I will do that last, because I think Darnell is the only KU PG who is arguably better than Sherron.

Third, as I have noted repeatedly, Mario never played much PG. Self tried him there several times early on and he didn't cut it. Then when Mario might have matured enough to play the point, Self had Sherron, and didn't have a true two, so Mario played the two. We'll never know what kind of PG he would have made? It is probably safe to say that his trinity percentage would have adjusted downward had he had to play the PG. It does not seem like he would have ever been as good as Sherron handling the ball and getting to the rim, but maybe he would have. Anyway, we'll never know. Mario's ranking all-time has to be at the two, because that's what he played.

Fourth, a case can be made for Kirk. But Kirk often (mostly, as my memory recalls) was not the PG in his career either, and when he was he was he was never the first scoring option. Point blank, Kirk NEVER carried nearly the percentage of the scoring load that Sherron has had to do this year. Kirk never won a ring. Kirk was the more accurate long range bomber, though he built a lot of that high percentage from two guard spot, where its easier to concentrate on ringing the bell. He shot a higher trey percentage, but Kirk took a lot fewer shots and, again, his highest percentage shooting was probably done at the two guard. Kirk did not get to the rim nearly as often and effectively as Sherron. Kirk was always called an exceptional player. Kirk was never called unguardable by an opposing coach that I recall. Kirk was faster running in open court, but not in acceleration starting his dribble. Defense is hard to compare, because Roy asked Kirk to play an utterly different kind of defense. Sherron probably could have looked just as good as Kirk on defense in Roy's system. Question: could Kirk have looked as good as Sherron in Bill's system? I have a hunch Kirk might have looked a bit better than Sherron, but again, comparison is hard, because Kirk was never, or at least rarely, asked to do as much as Sherron is asked to do, so maybe Sherron's defense suffers from the work load. Frankly, people's image of Sherron as a weak defender springs almost entirely from last season, when Sherron was playing on bad wheels the entire season. This year his defense is at least adequate for Bill Self and that is a lot better than what Roy ever required. Overall Edge: Sherron.

Fourth, Jo Jo is another guy to make a case for, though the year his team was a contender, Delvy Lewis, not Jo Jo, was the point guard, if memory serves me. Jo Jo's major advantage was on defense and stripping. Still Jo Jo never scored as much as Sherron has had to do this year. He did not win a ring. People say Sherron has short comings like driving into trouble (though the coach is clearly telling him to force it to the rim much of the time to draw fouls) and sometimes not getting his teammates into the flow. Jo Jo, though he is remembered as being perfect, was often terrible at setting tempo. He walked the ball up and slowed the team to a crawl many times, even more so than Owens asked him to do. Jo Jo was a control freak. He often held onto the ball too long and, doing so, often caused his teammates to begin standing around. My father, an astute basketball man, was actually partly glad to see Jo Jo depart, precisely because he wasn't able to modulate tempo. It is not surprising he played the two guard in the pros, despite only being 6'3" and a good ball handler. He was a natural born two guard, with a good, but not great outside shot--not a natural born PG. Finally, compare what Jo Jo actually accomplished at KU with Sherron's accomplishments, not what you think a PG ought to look like.

Fifth, Darnell Valentine is the only other possible contender and I believe a good case can be made for him being the best KU PG. Him playing without the three point shot clouds the issue. I don't know what his trey percentage might have been, but he probably would have been a good trinitizer. At least I could see how persons might rate Darnell higher than Sherron. He started more years and games at PG. He played more minutes and scored more points, because of it. Darnell was better defensively and probably got more strips. Darnell was taller. Darnell carried a big load of the scoring each year at KU, as Sherron has had to do only Sherron's junior year. Darnell had a very good freshman year and started, though, to be fair to Sherron, Ted Owens had an empty slot waiting for Darnell, whereas Self had Mario Chalmers and Russell Robinson waiting for Sherron--and though Sherron did not start, he played a lot, was often the straw that stirred the drink was said by Self to probably be the best player on the team his freshman year. Darnell started his sophmore year, too, where as Sherron remained the nonstarting starter at the point behind Mario Chalmers and Russell Robinson. Darnell was healthy his soph season, whereas Sherron was hobbled all year. Darnell sharply outscored Sherron as a sophmore, but again, Sherron was the nonstarting starter and was arguably, despite his injuries, the straw who stirred the drink on a national champion. So far, it looks arguable for Darnell on stats but not winning. But here is the beginning of the problem with Darnell Valentine: freshman year--24-5, 0-1 in Madness; sophmore year--18-11, no Madness; junior year--15-14, no Madness; and senior year--24-8, 2-1 in Madness. Darnell has no ring. Sherron does. Darnell point guarded (noun as verb will send me to journalism hell) experienced teams to records comparable to what Sherron has lead this year's utterly inexperienced team to. But when Darnell had to carry two rebuilding teams, as Sherron has done this year, Darnell's teams cratered, while Sherron's soared. Did Darnell have an inferior coach? Yes. Did Darnell have inferior talent the years his teams cratered? Certainly he was playing without as good of bigs (some might say without any credible bigs). But the edge at the rest of the positions is not decisive. Is Tyshawn Taylor sharply better than Ricky Ross or Tony Guy?

The stats don't say so, but Tyshawn seems destined for a pro career where those guys were not. Are Brady Morningstar, Tyrel Reed, and Mario Little way better than their equivalents on Darnell's teams with cratered records? The stats don't say so and my memory doesn't say so either. Point blank, Sherron has the advantage of Cole and Bill Self in rebuilding years. That's apparently a big edge it turns out, an edge ideally suited to Sherron's game. And Sherron has outscored in ppg Darnell the minute he began to play as many minutes as Darnell did. I've got to give the edge to Sherron, based on what he has done this year, because I assume he could have done just as much as Darnell did with an equal number of minutes, which he would have had had we switched their teams. And doubt Darnell could have beaten out Mario Chalmers and Russell Robinson any more than Sherron was allowed to do, again, were players switched. Finally, since Darnell had two full seasons to carry a rebuilding team all by himself and could not score as much as Sherron has in similar capacity, I've got to give the edge to Sherron, assuming he's just a more dominant player, when on the floor an equal number of minutes. If someone says, yes, but Sherron has gotten to play with three point shot, and Darnell would have added three points per game with trey shooting, I can see their point. Bottom line, Darnell did more, but Sherron has done better. And there is every reason to think that if Sherron had been in the same position Darnell was in, Sherron would have scored as much or more, than Darnell did. I have not calculated the statistic, but based on ppg per minute played, I suspect Sherron would hold an advantage, also. But I will grant anyone that a very good case can be made for Darnell Valentine being KU's best PG. But if Sherron were to return for his senior year, as Darnell did, I would expect the closeness of the two would disappear with the edge growing sharply for Sherron.

Sherron's physique is rare and so unconventional at PG, because of his extreme width and extreme strength, coupled with his extreme speed and fine touch. The kid from Omaha who kicked booty and won a ring with UConn a few years back has some comparability, maybe one of those squatty bodies on Valvano's NC State ring team, too, but I really believe Sherron would have been just to strong for those kids, plus maybe too fast, too.

Sherron is a freak of nature at the two. Lucky us.
