Self coach-of-year finalist

— Kansas University men’s basketball coach Bill Self is among 10 finalists for the 2009 Jim Phelan national coach of the year award. The other finalists: Jamie Dixon (Pittsburgh), Trent Johnson (LSU), Darrin Horn (South Carolina), Jim Calhoun (Connecticut), John Calipari (Memphis), Lorenzo Romar (Washington), Brad Stevens (Butler), Bruce Weber (Illinois) and Roy Williams (North Carolina).

The only other person on this list that I think deserves this award as much as Bill Self is Trent Johnson (and maybe Bruce Weber)..

LSU was supposed to be better this year, but nobody expected them to run away with the SEC. It's a down year for that league, but the teams are still better than any mid major you would have to play.

Putting Roy Williams, Jim Calhoun and Jamie Dixon in this category is just stupid. They had WAY higher expectations than most of the other coaches as they had quite a bit returning on their teams, especially UNC.

Don't even get me started with John Calipari.....he's a good coach, but hardly deserving of coach of the year. Memphis is beating teams it SHOULD beat. He's not doing anything surprising and he also had talent returning from his team from last year. He lost his two best players, but KU lost their 6 (though Collins was no slouch).

This is only my opinion....I might be alone on all of this.

What? No Mike Anderson? No Jeff Capel? ; )

Tiggers were trying to argue Anderson over Self on the KC Star page. And Dicky V was making a case for Capel last week. Dumb.

I would definitely agree with your overall analysis. If a coach has a fantastic returning team, and plays well, does that make someone coach of the year, or should it be team of the year?

The one point I would disagree a LITTLE (not a lot) is LSU. They have played above themselves and are doing a great job. Trent Johnson deserves some praise. That being said, LSU has played a supremely mild schedule.

Calhoun, Williams, and Dixon? You've got to be kidding. Romar and Self are the most deserving. Let's see--no returning starters, loss of eight from last year's team, leading the Big 12. Nope, no reason Self should be selected! WAJ!!!!

My vote goes to Roy Williams. Even though he's got a worse record than last year with the same team, he coaches North Carolina, right?

Coach Capel and Coach Anderson are left off this list. What a joke. Bell Self will and should get coach of the year. Coach Capel and Coach Anderson should get some consideration. Can someone tell me why Bruce Webber would be on this list. Talk about a guy that SUCKS. Goofy looking. Things have not been the same since Bill Self left that program for greener pastures.

I will always hate MU basketball, but I still love that Mike Anderson has come and made that team respectable so that our rivalry looks more like a rivalry and less like the boring beatdown it was during the Quin years. He deserves consideration for what he has done with that group of players. Roy should not be there. No personal anger hear... I love him for what he did for our program and am happy he left so we could get Self... but he should be nowhere near this list. That is one of the most experienced and talented teams the NCAA has seen in years. A final four team from last year with the national player of the year and they lost virtually no one. The preseason talk was if they could run the table for the season. At best, they have been as expected ... in many eyes, a disappointment. Self desrves the award. No one expected anything like this from KU this year after all we lost. No one expected it after our first few games watching this team. See Florida after they lost everyone (embarassment, NIT, and Donovan getting so frustrated he took away ALL the player's team gear and banned them from the facility for a time). Self and his staff have done amazing things with this team. I never though I would see this level of performance from this team as a whole or some of the players as individuals. Number of people (including his mom) who expected this from Brady: 0. Number of people ready to rip away scholarships from the Morris twins after the first couple months: millions. Even Sherron has been doubted big time in his new role. On and on with this group. I say this is some pretty damn fine coaching. That said, I think there is a good chance it goes to Trent Johnson and KU fans continue to complain about the media not recognizing us.

On KC Star, the poll is based on The Henry Iba Coach of ther Year award not the Jim Phelan Award. Bill Self should win the Henry Iba and Jim Phelan coach of the year. Who else in the country lost ALL statrters and is now competing with the best of the best? No one! ROCK CHALK!
