Gary Bedore’s KU Basketball Notebook

KU hoops freshmen en route

The KU men's basketball team should have its full complement of freshmen in town by the end of this weekend.

Player updates

KU’s Sherron Collins (ankle sprain) and Travis Releford (skin irritation) may not play in today’s Bill Self camp game between current and former players.

Thomas Robinson, a freshman forward from Washington, D.C., and Jeff Withey, a frosh center who transferred from the University of Arizona, may be the only newcomers to play.

Non-scholarship player C.J. Henry has said he will not attend summer school, and instead will work out in his hometown of Oklahoma City. Elijah Johnson will report to campus after Saturday’s graduation ceremony at Las Vegas’ Cheyenne High.

Xavier Henry is slated to report this week, perhaps as early as today, maybe later.

“Xavier, he had his braces taken off (teeth), and he had to go back and get a retainer and some other things done, so he's trying to tighten up all that before he gets here,” Self said. “Anyone that has worn them (braces) for a while, then the doctor says this is the day you get them off, I think you’re pretty excited about that day, so I don’t fault him at all for that.”

Little not being rushed

Self said Mario Little, who had surgery on April 16 to repair a stress fracture in his lower left leg, “could play today if he had to. He doesn’t have to, so in a couple more weeks, if rehab goes well, he’ll be able to run around like he did in junior college. We haven’t seen a healthy Mario since he got here.”

Where is the game going to be held? It'd be nice if Bedore gave that piece of important information.

lets hope that sherron collins and travis releford will be ok

Chicago_JHawk 11 years, 10 months ago

Releford is out due to skin irritation? Never heard that one before!

jaybate 11 years, 10 months ago

CJ not showing up this summer like the rest of the players?

Xavier not showing, because he is getting his braces off?

Self saying he understands Xavier's absence, but saying nothing about CJ?

Something is not right with this picture.

Whether or not CJ is bucks up from pro baseball days, CJ would be a goof ball not to be at KU this summer working out and playing in this game...if things were koshire. Quick, get a rabbi and bless this hot dog.

Could CJ be being asked to stay away, because of issues surrounding the reputed NCAA investigations into Memphisto basketball, and CJ's former Memphisto coach, John Calipari?

Sometime ago, I wondered about the risk of one or both of the Henry's being tainted by their experiences with the Memphis program.

By any chance, is Mother Henry taking a leave of absence at the Lawrence Hertz office?

Buck08 11 years, 10 months ago

Ah theres jaybate trying to be a professional writer again, nobody thinks your funny man or inciteful. Anyways, let the kids do what they want to do right now it's summer. For the past however many months things have been pretty crazy and intense around Kansas recruiting. Lay off and let them enjoy their summer!

jaybate 11 years, 10 months ago

Mario Little,

Talk to Brandon Rush. Say, "Hey, BRush, mind if I tag along wich ya on your work outs?"

When BRush gives you the Kool Jazz smile and says, "Yeah, meet me at 5am tomorrow morning in front of the field house," meet him there. Do everything he does. BRush is a work out animal. BRush has beaten the dread knee injury. BRush is working out to be come the core of Larry Bird's Pacers. BRush has a chance for ultimate bones, the meta lotto, the Federal Reserve pump and dump. Keeping up with this guy for the summer will turn you into a fitness animal.

Why do this?

You ship just may have come in, pal.

What if the Henry's are no shows after all?

Even if only CJ doesn't show, you could well become crucial again.

And there is always at least one injury to some one vital each season. Remember?

Dribble the rock everywhere you go, when you are not with Brandon.

And when you are shadowing Brandon, like Lamont Cranston, or dribbling the rock, shoot 1000 threes a day. Your path to the NBA and to the stars passes 6.25 meters (that's 20'6" for the recalcitrant Anglophiles) from the orange hoop attached just beneath the white box painted on the glass back board at each end of Naismith Court, Allen Field House, Lawrence, Kansas, USA, Planet Earth, Milky Way Solar System, Known Universe.

This is your moment, Mario Little. Your stars are moving back in a line that favors you.

Coach Self clearly believes you are a special talent--someone with his kind of sempre fi values.

Your sacrifice of your chance to redshirt has clearly pegged Coach Self's respect meter on maximum.

Remember the Kansas state motto: ad astra per aspera. To the stars through difficulty.

Your stars may very well be lining up at last, man.

Go for it!

My perception is that Xavier does what he wants to do on his own, sweet time and that older bro surfs on those coat tails. Don't call the rabbi yet. he might be blessing the weenies without good cause. But, I do have symapthy for HCBS, The smell of disrespect is in the air. There's always his "boot camp" to regain repect and show them he is "the boss of them"!

TR and Withey are to be comended for doing the right thing. Maybe Xavier is afraid to play against former players that could embarrass him. Im not suggesting prima-dona here. But, I'm just sayin....

jaybate 11 years, 10 months ago

You know I respect you more than any one. You know I think you are the smartest guy that has ever posted on this board. You know that without your approval, I cannot go on, right?

It's only June, so I'm not ready to jump on the sky-is-falling bandwagon in regards to the Henrys, and who knows, Bill Self seems OK with how things are progressing, but the Henrys have already shown to be somewhat of an irritation with the way the recruiting played out, the way they've been reluctant to move to Lawrence - and I know Xavier is on his way eventually - but it seems like everytime you turn around these two are off in their own world...

Regardless - all will be forgotten when these two get on the floor and start ballin... When they finally get here.

lonestarjayhawk 11 years, 10 months ago

You are all jumping off the deep end with your speculation. Have you been around in the summer to see how often these guys play? Most of the former players are around all summer and on any given week night there are very competitive games played. The education process for the new guys is in place and missing several games is not the end of the world.
Enjoy your summer!

Not sure the internet is big enough for your egocentric trysts.

Joel Hood 11 years, 10 months ago

Folks, please don't start unnecessary rumors.

Carl Henry said several weeks ago that CJ's conditioning was not where it should be. He went to Memphis in baseball shape, not basketball shape, then really fell behind after his injury. CJ is very hungry to compete as sitting on the bench was very hard for him last season. He is in OKC getting in shape with help from his dad so he can compete this fall. How is this bad for KU?

alucard 11 years, 10 months ago

Well said jayhawkerjoel, give these guys the benefit of the doubt. We have no idea what is going on with these guys. They are not owned by KU. Let's not label them before they've even had a chance to show us who they are and what they can do.

Here is a hint for readers of this site:

Simply skip anything that Jaybate posts. His posts are pathetic attempts from a uninformed loser who is still trying to impress his High School English teacher by trying over and over again to prove that he can earn a C+ in creative writing instead of that dreaded C he received in 1987.

He is an egomaniacal, three-eyed donkey who needs a full-time editor and thesaurus just to write out a deposit slip at the bank (if they had banks in the State prison). And even then, the slip would be filled out incorrectly.

I used to find it somewhat amusing to read his diatribe -- kind of like watching a chimp eat termites off of a stick. You know, sort of amazing to see a primate imitating humans. Almost there but still a couple circuits shy of making the big leap to true intelligence. But then he becomes a bit like watching mud dry on a side walk: slow, simple and boring as hell.

He will respond to me with his same moronic garble. For all the prolific crap to fly off of his uneducated fingers to his keyboard, his response to criticism is even more pathetic than his ridiculous typical posts.

So when you see his posts, simply yawn and move on and know before reading a word that there will be no more useful or interesting information written there than you would find on a cocktail napkin at the local Hooters.

Jaybate is, quite simply, the most uninteresting man in the world. And I highly doubt he drinks anything resembling Dos Equis. He probably grew up drinking Schlitz in his trailer park.

Michael Gentemann 11 years, 10 months ago

Apparently your first post was inciteful as it caused a strong reaction from Buck08.

I must disagree with Buck08. I find most, though not all, of your posts humorous, inciteful and occasionally insightful. At the very least they are well devised, entertaining to read and make proper use of the spell-check function.

Please don't stop writing just because "nobody thinks your funny man" (?).

You guys are so cute with your bickering! I'm with thephog88, just wanted to weigh in...

Can't we all just get along? Where's the love?

kufankam 11 years, 10 months ago

Seriously people.... this whole Henry drama talk is getting old!!! Watch the video. Self looks about as worried as Tiger Woods' banker. this is really getting to be so stupid. the kid stays in his hometown to get his braces removed and all the talk about his commitment come out again. it reminds me of the irrational post's back when he was weighing his options in April, "If X were coming, he would have committed a long time ago... blah, blah, blah, blah"

give it a rest about X and CJ. they are coming! when Self starts to show signs of worrying, then i would worry. but when he is laughing and joking about the status of an incoming recruit, i would think it will be okay.

tstanlick1909 11 years, 10 months ago

everyone here should know by now that we can trust our coach

go and watch the video of him regarding X being late because of the removal of his braces, he looks like hes going to be doing a lot of golfing this summer

when bill self is golfing, all things jayhawk basketball are running smoothly

nothing to worry about here

nothin like some classic internet s*** talking, who is the loser? arent you the one on your computer thinking up mean things to say about a fellow jayhawk fan. get a life dude. JayBate has been on this site forever, and all these posts directed at him/her are exactly what he/she wants so youre playing into his/her hands.

keith horinek 11 years, 10 months ago

memhawk just opened my eyes. I always thought "boot camp" was a way to measure how well the players stayed in shape in the offseason and evaluate them accordingly on how well they performed in boot camp. I agree with memhawk, maybe it's HCBS's way of breaking them down and "rebuilding" them into team players. it must work, because his players, since he's been at KU, have all been about teamwork. the players that didn't buy into it have left.

Alex Wishart 11 years, 10 months ago

remember when we won the National Championship game? that was awesome!

Just thought i would remind you all what we're here for.

You have every right to express your opinions on this site and you have made many good points on a variety of subjects. I will take your back and fight to the death to allow that for all. That doesn't mean I agree or condone your opinions. Heck I may feel the same way about your postings as you feel toward Jaybate.

However, in my relatively short time on this site, I have found that Jaybate has always shown appreciation for poster's salient points, has shown gratitude for complements and has never truly blasted anyone without his tongue firmly placed within his cheek.

Something tells me your tongue was anywhere but in your cheek with the subject post.

ANYWAY,. who cares!!! Morningstar is hurt and the injury curse is beginning to rear it's ugly head. Thank God it's June and not October!!

DoubleDD 11 years, 10 months ago

What's up with the hatred towards Jaybate???? Come on, everyday we come here looking for the 411 on the Jayhawks. We're all excited about the coming year and can't believe we have all the pieces in place to be champions again after just one year removed of our championship season. This is the Royfreakingchoke syndrome. See I've come to believe that as KU fans we were subjected to some weird Tarheel experiment. Win lots of games but choke for all the marbles. Here's what you do, take a deep breath and say to yourself "Trust in Self" as many times as takes for you to realize that you're a Jayhawk win or lose. Oh, and for those of you that called Jaybate stupid, dumb and trailer trash, well you just got played. You see Jaybate is thoughtful and a very deep thinker, but most of all jaybate is anwry, you know stiring the pot ;)

jchief40 11 years, 10 months ago

I have to put a lime in my Dos Equis. Otherwise it almost tastes like piss. I say almost because Budweiser and Coors etc. is actually REAL piss.

verled 11 years, 10 months ago

If I were a Henry and had a girlfriend in OKC, I would not be in a hurry to get to KU. The chicks won't be arriving on campus for another month or so. And boyz, it's "INSIGHTFULL" not "incitefull.
