KU’s Taylor leads U.S. to 106-55 rout of Iran

Kansas University sophomore guard Tyshawn Taylor scored a team-high 13 points in the United States’ 106-55 drubbing of Iran in the U-19 World Championships this morning in New Zealand.

The U.S., which had seven players in double figures, improved to 1-0.

Taylor shot 6-of-7 from the field, dished three assists, pulled down a rebound and nailed one of two three-point shots.

Seth Curry added 12 points, John Shurna and Terrico White each accounted for 11 points, and DeAngelo Casto, Howard Thompson and Ashton Gibbs each scored 10.

The United States will face France on Friday.

This is fantastic news... Aside from the drama that has shadowed the rest of what's gone on this off-season, the rest of this team is making huge strides and I can't wait to see the improvement from guys like Tyshawn and the Morris Twins. And hey - seeing Xavier and CJ won't be too bad either.

Good going, Tyshawn. Could have spotted them 50 points in exchange for a new election.

Tyshawn definitely has the talent to be SCARY good. Hopefully he can put it all together this year. It should be fun to watch...

Thats great nto hear. Nice work Tyshawn! Keep it up.

Seth Curry - any relation to Stephen (?spelling) Curry?

How do you like the way the wire services reported this?

Here's an example of bias in reporting (Or at least in headlining a story)?

Tyshawn is the top scorer for the US with 13, and the headlines/tag lines leading the story are:

From the AP: "Curry, Shurna lead US effort" From CBS Sports: "Seth Curry helps lead US"

The CBS headline is a little more accurate as Curry had 12 points, so he did 'help'. Shurna had 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Both do mention that Tyshawn led the team in scoring in the article.

Seth Curry is transferring from Columbia to Duke. John Shurna is attending Northwestern.

I guess KU has gotten too much publicity recently???

KU hasn't had too many players lead in international competition in recent years. I would like to see us get a little run/pub from one of our young guns, instead of others getting the hype.

Yeah, I know it isn't like he outscored everyone else by a lot (Only by 1 point) but he did lead the team.

Does anyone else care how it was titled?

What a breath of fresh air. Watching Tyshawn play last year was so exciting because you never knew when he was going to pull off something spectacular (e.g., @ OU last season). Granted, he tended to disappear at times, but I think Tyshawn is just beginning to tap into his talent!

I guess you're dissing my comment....

I think it would be nice to see our players get a little more credit when they lead the US in international competition, hasn't happened much lately. Tyshawn isn't likely to lead the team in scoring in every game. So I think it would have been nice to see him get some hype by having his name in the headline.

This isn't a super big thing, but this is an example of bias, that when it is continually done diminishes outside perspectives of the players and teams (in this instance), in the Big XII.

I don't think that SETH Curry or John Shurna have so much name recognition that their names should lead the story, when they didn't lead the scoring.

I live in Georgia now and I'm a KU and Big XII fan. I stick up for my team and players. I'll bet you that if Tyshawn doesn't lead the team in scoring in future games, he almost certainly won't have his name in the headlines.

Positive Publicity is very important to getting great recruits to come to KU. I don't know about you, but this summer has seemed to me to be the John Calipari Publicity Show. In order to compete with that, our team and players need publicity, so that recruits will want to come here.

So could you please can the knee-jerk reaction to my pointing out that our player didn't get the hype? I try to see the big picture. KU's player was the leading scorer, and on the national scene, he doesn't get any credit for doing that, because the wireservices choose to lead the story with a Duke and Northwestern player....

Perception colors reality. The reality is Tyshawn was the leading scorer (Not by much). the perception of people who read the headline would be that others were better than him in this game, which is probably not the case.

And I want you to understand that it's not that I have a thin-skin at all. I just realize how big an advantage it is to the Duke's and Calipari's of the world to have their name in the headlines all the time. Over time perception can become reality. Then we're stuck back in the 60's and 70's again, and can't get the top flight recruits to come to KU.

Seth is not transferring from columbia. He is coming from Liberty, and yes he is the younger brother of stephen curry. Also why would the newspaper articles write about someone from ku. They never do any other time, so why start now.

You're right. Liberty is where Seth is transferring from. My bad. Don't know where I came up with Columbia. My OOPS!

dynomite,

If he scores the most against France, why not do the title in French...Something like...

Tyshawn Taylor c'est une vedette de USA basketball. (I had to look it up). The translation would loosely be: Tyshawn Taylor the USA basketball celebrity (star).

That would be giving him his props, huh!

mandomax 10 years, 6 months ago

Looks from the picture on Zagsblog like Tyshawn is getting in one last hurrah in his old number 15 before he unselfishly dishes it to E. Johnson FOR THE TREY! Sorry I got carried away there.

I thought it should have been subtitled "Iraqi players demand a recount."

wanna know something else from dynomites article that he linked? The ND assistant went to Holy Cross. That means Dooley is staying here for now.

Who cares about not leading a headline. Flying under the radar is a good thing.

jayhawkintx73 10 years, 6 months ago

raister, You're probably right, but it is the Under 19 US Team. Not the US National Team that would play in international competition at the Olympic level.
