Aldrich did break nose versus Nebraska

Kansas University basketball coach Bill Self on Friday said sophomore center Cole Aldrich broke his nose in Wednesday’s game at Nebraska.

Aldrich had his nose set on Thursday and was fitted for a protective mask.

Self, however, said he didn’t know if Aldrich would have to wear the mask in Saturday’s game against Colorado.

“Cole's fine,” Self said Friday. “He did break his nose in the game. We don’t know if he’ll have to wear it (a mask) or not.”

Self said the 6-foot-11 Aldrich would practice with the team on Friday afternoon in preparation for the Colorado game.

He took a shot to the face in the second half of Wednesday's victory and had a cotton swab in his nose the rest of the game.

And this is what happens when Sadler lets his kids "scrap." I know a lot of people like Doc Sadler, but I have been pretty disappointed with the chaos and elbows his teams bring to the game. Nothing crisp about the Cornhuskers.

when your program is near the bottom of the basketball food chain, all you can do is scrap to survive.

Elbows are a part of basketball. It is unfortunate that Cole caught one in such a way that it broke his nose, but it wasn't even noticed during the game until he was sitting on the bench after they stoped play for something else. Fortunately, it didn't appear to be a cheap shot. I was amazed at all the cheap shots they showed Griffin dealing with this year. How much of that goes on away from the camera/normal game action?

"Cole's fine."--Bill Self on Cole Aldrich having a broken nose.NOT!I've had a broken nose. It hurt like hell, and the worst of it was: everyone was trying to pop it again the next game, because they knew if they barely caught it, you were out of the game for five minutes, and probably the whole game. A broken nose is one of those injuries an opponent with no class, an opponent taught to exploit any weakness, loves. You don't have to really elbow it hard to hurt it, like you do to break it in the first place. In fact you can just give it a slap with an errant hand on a jump shot and cause so much pain, eye watering and blood that Cole is out of the game, at least for awhile, usually the rest of the half. And a broken nose is like a flashing green light special at KMart to thug ballers. It is like wearing a sticky on your forehead that says "Pop me in the nose again." A broken nose is an instant minute shortener, even if it doesn't get "brushed" again. The swelling turns you into a mouth breather and that means reduced breathing efficiency and that means quicker fatigue and that means more trips to the bench. Cole has already appeared to be having trouble with conditioning, probably because of a cold, or some allergy recently. Kiss his endurance good bye for awhile.A broken nose is a female dog.

When you don't beat Nebraska by double digits, someone deserves a broken nose.

nebraska_jayhawk 10 years, 11 months ago

All we need is another mizzou in the league. If Nebraska continues to do crap like this, then they'll be mizzou II.

rick cowley 10 years, 11 months ago

I remember the play he got wacked was a defensive rebound (possibly on a free throw). Cole had a hand on it until he got bashed in the face (appeared unintentional), anyway the ball went out of bounds and back to NU.

yeah i think it's stupid to write this article on cole breaking his nose, good luck next game on not re-breaking it.

ChicagoJHawk 10 years, 11 months ago

Hey MIZ_NIT,What happens when your team loses to Nebraska? 'Cause your crappy Mizzou Tigers lost to them by 5 points. Of course you didn't know that b/c, like all Mizzou fans, you're more concerned about seeing Kansas lose than seeing your own team win. Moron! Your username says it all, have fun in the NIT, IF you're lucky enough to make it there.

Yeah, playing with a mask will certainly NOT help his game!!!

billswinners 10 years, 11 months ago

I played with a mask my whole senior year and once you get used to it, there is no problem. The clear masks they have now are even better.

Dan Pawlowski 10 years, 11 months ago

Plenty of players play well with masks. Some even continue to wear it when they no longer need it because it gives them more confidence knowing they wont have to deal with that pain again. Rip Hamilton even went so far as to say "it's my superman cape".

I replayed the recording of the game to see the time Cole caught it in the nose and it was just before our offensive possesion when the blood was detected. He was "guarding" Dagonduro in front of the basket. Dagonduro threw up his left elbow to protect his shot from being blocked. It was not intentional and was a case of a nose being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Be that as it may, we need to take a page from this game and step up our intensity and fight. Teams will only atttempt to intimidate us when we are "soft" which is exactly how we have been playing. I think we will see greater intensity from here on. Reed and Collins and Mario have it, Now for the twins, Cole and even Taylor.

Re: Miz-nit. You would think that someone who just lost to Kansas State by double digits would hesitate to criticize someone else for winning.

eastTXjayhawk 10 years, 11 months ago

surely MIZ-NIT is not a MU fan, they would certainly not aspire to make the NIT thinking oops, my bad.on another note, i was suprised that at some point during that game, there was not an appearance from the one and only Teen Wolf.

I think you folks are a little hard on MIZ-NIT. He (or she) didn't make the best comment: "When you don't beat Nebraska by double digits, someone deserves a broken nose." That doesn't make him a MU fan. (Previous posts show favor toward KU and nothing about MU.) His handle would suggest he feels enmity toward Mizwho not endearment.

The Big XII has placed several teams in post season play for the past few years. With the parity across the nation, there are teams that always seem to defy the odds and rise above those ACCish teams, (ie. Davidson, Gonzaga and others). I don't think we have a particularly weak conference. It is far more competitive than CUSA, Atlantic 10, and some of the western conferences. We've become spoiled as Jayhawks even with Texas, Oklahoma and our rivalry with MU. I think there is tough preparation every year from those wanna-be giant-killers like A&M, Ok. St. and Baylor. Let's talk about Cookie Miller. How about a campaign at AFH, when Nebraska visits, promoting him as one of the Keebler Elves? This guy has the typical "short man" syndrome. What a "chip" he has on his shoulder (I don't care who you are, that's funny!) At least we know he couldn't have been the one responsible for Cole's broken nose.

funkitect 10 years, 11 months ago

wow, that pic speaks volumes. first and foremost, cookie miller's closed fist; you don't go for a ball with a closed fist. it's obvious his intentions were malicious. second, they call a jump ball when the only one touching the ball is mario little. cookie and dagonduro are grabbing little's hands... he is just getting jacked in that play. (of course, in all the confusion that's a tough play to call by the refs)that picture should be posted all over the place when nebraska comes to the phog. doc sadler can defend his players all he wants, but that pic shows loud and clear: "cookie miller is a LITTLE punk!" - doug gottlieb(someone should email that picture to mr. sadler)
